your pistol should be the backup. your large guns should fit for longer range or close range with more power. Shotguns lack the range but hit harder to make up for it. a gun like the the DP-12 or what it's called is a shotgun but has the most range and tightest spread and there is slugs in the game too but i can't remember how well they do on mutants but i remember being able to 1 hit snorks with the unique one seemingly in the body from within it's optimal range. but then again those are also really weak to headshots from a Kharod for example if you can land those.

look, if you dont mind playing an older game start with Shadow of Chernobyl and see if you like it, it doesnt have Voice Overs so youll need to read the text that NPCs tell you but its first and foremost a FPS with no skills
If you want a more modern take on Stalker play Stalker 2, it isnt as good as SOC but it has Voice Overs and Text is toned down a bunch
