I have played on Ward side and it's weird how very late you encounter Spark. If you give detectors to Zotov then you meet them right after leaving Lesser Zone. Otherwise I think it's after Duga when you reach Malachite and Korshunov has his first meltdown.

It depends on your detector. Example: if you have a bear detector, your artifact will be locked in as a certain artifact at approximately 55 meters. So you would save about 60 meters or more to be able to randomize what you get
