But I managed to work it out, it was appearing inside various props. Like inside concrete girders and things. The area was very busy, and so almost every time it appeared it was inside something. Eventually it appeared right on the edge of a bit of geometry and I could see it peeking out - and snagged it.

Always try to get in corner or up against a wall. If in the open, run and get up on a boulder, forcing them less choices to get at you.
One of my favorite locations to run to and fight them at, are the bus stops, where you can get in a corner up on a bench seat.

The SA-U Gabion is not an early or average weapon. It's a DLC weapon from the Duga.
By the time you get it in the game, you should have a much better armor than the OZK Explorer's suit.

There are physical locations in the Zone, that have nothing to do with mutants, you need suit/helmet psi protection.
At the very least, ditch the PA-7 and get the Sphere helmet. It has one of the highest psi protection for a helmet.

Humans do have a natural night visionm its not great but we do have it. Sailors for centuries had no lights on at night in ships to keep the natural night vision as stable as possible. Its why even in the movie Titanic, the Bridge lights are off. The crew could still see fair well.
