I think Dark Souls II is the best of the trilogy simply for what it could have been and the fact that it had some great ideas. Dark Souls 1 was great despite its jank up until Lost Izalith but that's to be expected because FromSoft ran out of dev time and had to rush it. Dark Souls III was good, but my God does it have a depressing tone.

Keep in mind that GSC has had to deal with a lot of shit during the game's development:

• The company being dissolved in 2011 and not coming back until 2014. (Apparently a skeleton crew was still kept on during the defunct years.)

• COVID-19 pandemic.

• Having their country invaded.

• Having to move their company to a different country, now has a 50/50 split between Prague and Kyiv iirc.

• Server room fire in their Prague office that took out an entire floor.

• Significant growth as a company in a short period of time and all of the challenges that come with that.

• I remember seeing mention of flood damage at one of their offices, but I've never been able to get confirmation.

If the game had been developed under ideal conditions I would give GSC far less leniency.

2. This is the studios first project of this scale and complexity.

4. The original trilogy had a proximity-based spawner too, only it properly integrated with offline A-Life. More work is simply going to have to be done. It's probably more difficult to get everything working properly in S2 compared to the original trilogy which had cordoned off maps and ran on an in-house engine.

if you are up for reinstalling the game, delete the entire S2 folder, delete the S2 appdata folder (contains saves, shaders, logs, etc) and turn off steam cloud
this should give you the cleanest slate you can ever get
