As for making early game AK's viable throughout instead of weapon progression, it's something that can very easily be modded (I bet there are dozens such mods already), but the way it works vanilla is a design decision and I doubt it will ever get patched to work any other way.

So, basically, we learn in SoC that Monolithians get "recruited" by the Brain Scorcher or any of the other antennas used by the Group. As for what controls them isn't fully explained, but it's reasonable to assume that C-Consciousness controlled them as well, as the Monolith disappeared after that and the control on the Monolithians slipped after that. That being said, CoP doesn't explain us why Strider and his group returned back to normal compared to the other Monolithians.

Of course, from here on out, you can look to STALKER 2 for answers, but with the amount of retcons and fanfic that game has, it's really just up to you
