If they all store 1 bit (just either 0 or 1), when you're trying to pull lots of information, you can access more of those black boxes at the same time to pull that information in parallel, but if you have 3 bits or 4 bits per cell, you have to wait for the same black box to give you 3 bits, one by one, which is a lot slower
