Taskbar i leave because the hide animation really bothers me, dock i hide, top menu bar i leave

kind panther
#

no taskbar

bright shell
#

I can't function without the taskbar.

kind panther
#

I mean its always a press of the windows key away

#

lol

#

just not always in ur face

frank steeple
#

It just sits there wasting space

bright shell
#

Uhhh

#

It does a lot of things

frank steeple
#

Like what

#

Have a clock?

bright shell
#

Like, show you Time and Date, and your open applications, and your Sound and Wi-Fi

kind panther
#

all widgets on the desktop 🤷

bright shell
#

And whether anything is using your Microphone and Location Data

frank steeple
#

I'm sorry, but you should know what programs you have open without needing a constant reminder

bright shell
#

What?

#

but what if you have like, a lot of things open?

frank steeple
#

Then you should close some of them

#

Or use workspaces

bright shell
#

But what if you need all of them?

frank steeple
#

Then use workspaces

bright shell
#

Eww, Workspaces are dumb

kind panther
#

alt tab good too

bright shell
#

Having to tab over to an entire new desktop?

kind panther
#

and win+tab

frank steeple
#

Better then having windows spam all over the place

bright shell
#

Alt-Tab is fine, but I don't use it unless I have a Fullscreen Application open (E.x Game)

frank steeple
#

I generally only have a maximum of four or five programs running in a single workspace with a dual monitor setup

kind panther
#

Win key + tab

#

pulls up all open programs

frank steeple
#

Well, technically I have split workspaces so it's really only two programs per workspace

#

Sometimes three but that's rare

kind panther
#

and you can click on one to bring it up

bright shell
#

Ehhh, not... exactly KPX

frank steeple
#

Usually it's only one

bright shell
#

Win + Tab is borked on W11

#

With Dual Monitors

kind panther
#

I can confirm that its not

bright shell
#

It only brings up 1 monitor's worth of apps

#

Oh

kind panther
#

thats win 11

frank steeple
#

Works as expected for me

bright shell
#

It might be DisplayFusion screwing with things then.

#

DisplayFusion has spoiled me with the "Move Window to Other Monitor" button

#

It should be a default button

frank steeple
#

You mean super+left/right?

bright shell
#

No

#

That's....

#

No.

#

I don't like that

kind panther
#

or drag it over to the other monitor?

bright shell
#

I just tried it

#

And... No.

#

It's 1 click

kind panther
#

i mean even dragging is 1 click

frank steeple
#

what about super+shift+left/right then?

bright shell
#

See the little button in the top right?

#

AH

#

That does what that little button does.

#

Oh, DisplayFusion has an even easier command for that.

#

Ctrl Super X

frank steeple
#

Yeah, because that makes sense

bright shell
#

I mean, it's a 1 handed command vs Shift Super Arrow

frank steeple
#

You have two hands on your keyboard

bright shell
#

I have 1 hand on my keyboard and 1 hand on my mouse

kind panther
#

You can also bind it to a mouse button

#

in mouse app settings

frank steeple
#

Pro life tip

bright shell
#

I only shift hands when I need to actually type

frank steeple
#

Don't bother with your mouse

kind panther
#

I have a dedicated alt tab micro on my mouse and use it a lot

kind panther
#

and a macro layer to double that number

frank steeple
#

How many buttons do you have on your keyboard

kind panther
#

thats fair but all the buttons on mouse are a thumb click away

bright shell
#

Yep

frank steeple
#

64 buttons and 16 layers of macros

#

All within reach

kind panther
#

just convenient as I cant move wrist all that much to reach over to the keyboard with the right hand... bad nerve damage in my right wrist

kind panther
frank steeple
#

Yup

#

Could probably DIY more layers in, but that's the default max

kind panther
#

how would I go about doing that

frank steeple
#

Get a qmk keyboard

kind panther
#

like even just 1 extra layer

#

ah nothing in software that works on all boards?

bright shell
#

Uhh

#

You could use that QMK Converter USB thing

frank steeple
kind panther
#

Hmm fairly

frank steeple
#

Lots of boards can be reprogrammed if you try hard enough

bright shell
#

Or just buy this

frank steeple
#

$71?

#

That's a ripoff

#

Doesn't even have nkro

kind panther
#

you can get one of those 10$

frank steeple
#

Probably

#

All it is is an arduino

bright shell
#

I just know that that device exists.

#

And that it can be used to provide QMK to basically any board.

frank steeple
#

That device is a complete scam

bright shell
#

No?

#

I think it was cheaper a while back

mortal totem
#

holy

frank steeple
#

Not even full qmk, it's just tmk

mortal totem
#

buy your own arduino

#

cheaper than 70usd

bright shell
#

I mean, you can't be perfect Bob.

frank steeple
#

Yeah, but you can do better than that

#

Could probably put at a fully featured competitor for $20 and still have a solid profit margin

true void
#

do y'all know anywhere where I can just dump fixes for obscure linux issues that will appear in search results without it being awkward

#

I have a lot of them and I feel like they would help but like

#

I dont think I can just dump them on a forum

#

also timeshift time I might not respond for a minute

#

I love apt upgrade so much it gives me like a feelign of Comfort

#

its like someone just telling u "everything is going to be fine" or "we'll handle this for you"

strong plover
true void
#

if I make apps they're all going to be open source and will have SO many swear words in the code comments

strong plover
true void
#

^^^^^^^^^

#

I wish apt upgrade was a person

strong plover
strong plover
true void
#

I wish apt upgrade was my dad

strong plover
#

He would be the best dad. And he’d have the answers for all the hard questions. And he wouldn’t make fun of you.

true void
#

^^^^^^^^^^^^

#

apt upgrade as a dad would be super accepting of everything

strong plover
#

He would understand and say, yep, that’s up to date

true void
#

wow this is actually a concerning looking conversation when I look back on it kekw

strong plover
#

And he’d be cool too

true void
#

imagine your first intro to linux being looking at this chat and its just someone wishing a command would be their dad

strong plover
#

Yeahh

#

okay, all New people, Don’t take us Too Seriously. we like the Command because it make us Feel secure. Like A Good Dad Does.

true void
#

the moral of the story is that linux users have bad families

strong plover
#

I actually have a really good family

#

But that doesn’t stop me from wanting apt upgrade as a dad

true void
#

I'm actually gonna be moving in with my dad soon

strong plover
#

Some people have sudo rm -rf dads

true void
#

definitely an upgrade from my current family they're like uhhhhhh

#

super mega ass

strong plover
#

sudo rm -rf / dads aren’t good

true void
#

^

strong plover
#

That’ll be good

true void
#

aight so I dont really have anything else to do atm, I think i'll take the source code of my rock paper scissors and improve it since I know what an array is now

#

gonna like

make the randomizer a function instead of just writing it out twice as well

strong plover

Nice! Do you not have school

I have a problem. (I’ve had it for a while but it’s just starting to bug me now). In windows, the close button X at the top was in the absolute corner, and I could move my mouse up and to the right without aiming to close a window if it was maximized. Im on Kde plasma (Ubuntu studio, so basically kubuntu for confused people), and my window decorations are materia dark.

#

I don’t know if it is a matter of changing the theme or what.

If you have suggestions ping me

Tldr, I want to move my mouse to the absolute corner and be hovered over the close box.

I know that only very few people here may know the answer to this but here goes. Does anyone here know if the Bethesda games launcher works in Linux? What about specific things like the creation kits for games?

bright shell
#

Probably not?

frank steeple
nocturne dragon
#

Alright, thank you!

#

That was my only concern as I was considering starting to make my own mods and such and was wondering if I should leave a small Windows 10 install for small things like that.

#

I know their games run perfectly fine according to protonDB

true void
#

if u have plenty you might want to leave a small install with fast boot off in the settings

#

if your leave it on windows hibernates and mounts as readonly and its annoying

nocturne dragon
#

I have nearly 7TB-8TB @true void

#

I have a 2TB M.2, a 2TB 7200RPM Hybrid Drive from my first ever PC that is still running fine, and a 3-4TB 7200RPM Hard Drive Mass Storage I got for really cheap a couple years ago because it was meant for enterprise use.

#

(It was like $30-40 because half of the drive wasn't accessible unless you cleaned up the disk outside of a GUI which I did using Windows' command prompt)

#

Also, I can't wait to move from Windows... I was installing a driver update for my graphics card and it decided to update windows during the restart for the driver...

#

Because of it hijacking what I was doing, it undid an option I selected for a clean driver install that prevents old drivers from remaining installed on my system alongside the new one (because the setting disables windows update supposedly temporarily to prevent it installing an old driver but it can just ignore that apparently)

bright shell
#

Oh sweet baby jesus! The latest Linux Beta driver for Nvidia's Proprietary drivers adds support for the GBM API which will enhance Wayland support on Nvidia GPUs!

#

Man, this really makes me want to just make the jump to Kubuntu since KDE Plasma is working on spooling up support for the new Nvidia GBM support.

frank steeple
#

Why would you distro hop to change your DE?

bright shell
#

I only have PopOS on my Laptop

#

And, IDK how well PopOS would deal with KDE

frank steeple
#

It works fine

#

Main question is do you really care about sway

nocturne dragon
#

My main issue with KDE over Pop_Os is that I couldn't find any support or instructions online to uninstall it properly and ended up bricking my install. Make sure you plan to keep it if you install. I repaired it using some tools but Pop never returned fully back to normal with a cursor that was 25% the size of the screen, different fonts, different cursor style, etc., etc.

I guess it is really uncommon to want to uninstall KDE_Plasma or something so no community posts about it could be found when I searched online and nothing could be found either through the website for system 76 or through the KDE site.

frank steeple
#

sudo apt uninstall plasma-desktop iirc

nocturne dragon
#

That was the line I ran through the terminal...

#

Perhaps it messed up during uninstall or something for me?

#

After it finished, our computer wouldn't boot except into a black screen with text simulating the terminal. We had to type in our username & password through this screen but then it just popped up with a message saying welcome and there was no desktop environment it would boot into.

#

At least, there were no GUI elements.

#

.........
I thought that maybe there would be steps you have to do before you enter that because of how badly it messed up...

I have more questions :passiveAgressiveSmilyFace:

#

I am a musician (obviously), and i play my midi keyboard from vst plugins off of my computer. I use MonasteryGrand from MSoundFactory. Right now i use it on windows, but i would absolutely love to get it working on Linux. Here is the hope the website gives me:

#

I installed TrueType fonts onto my computer already, not for this though.

#

And i do not have Wine installed. I am wondering whether i should use Wine or PlayOnLinux.

#

On this site it has a thing about playonlinux.

#

I just don’t know, if i install it straight from Wine, will i have trouble possibly creating new wine prefixes in the future?

#

Any help is appreciated, i couldnt find any documentation out there.

frank steeple
#

PlayOnLinux is a management tool for wine

#

Basically lets you easily manage different versions and configurations of wine for different programs

#

If you're planning on running multiple programs through wine pol is almost always worth setting up

strong plover
#

But it won’t give me a handicapped wine experience?

#

If it won’t then it looks great

frank steeple

Nope, if anything it improves it

Hi im annoying sorry. How would i install/use .dll plugins on Linux (I’m using PlayOnLinux). I’m trying to get my favorite piano vst to work in tracktion waveform (btw @mortal totem Traction is a daw that works flawlessly on Linux).

Here’s what I’ve done so far:
Installed wine and playonlinux
Ran the installer .exe in a wine prefix
It installed all the right files in the right folders

But the problem is, theyre .dll plugins. I don’t know how to get them to show up as VST plugins on my Linux OS

frank steeple

Again with the distro hoping to change your DE

You can literally use whatever desktop with whatever distro.

#

Just use Ubuntu or arch if you’re a higher being, and then change desktop to what you like imo

Yes, but I don't like the idea of installing a whole new DE eating even more space on my 512gb laptop drive.

I'd say yeah

What do you mean "play well"

Does it actually require the gnome DE to function. I know some apps are built only for 1 DE

strong plover
strong plover
#

And there’s a free version that hasn’t handicapped me yet :)

#

Really the paid version just adds Antares auto tune and a couple other thing iirc

bright shell
strong plover
bright shell
#

Yeah, I'm definitely gonna take a look at that. If it's super low latency that'll be really cool

bright shell
#

Are you joking?

frank steeple
#

No

#

Main reason is that jack is more of a replacement for pulse than alsa

bright shell
#

Oh, wait

#

I think Pop uses Pulse

#

I forget that Pulse and Alsa aren't interchangeable

frank steeple
#

ofc you can also use jack alongside pulse

bright shell
#

Hmm, interesting

frank steeple
bright shell
#

Oh, F

frank steeple
#

That's pretty much what every distro does

#

Pulse can't handle audio as a standalone program as far as I know

bright shell
#

Ah, so you can just replace Pulse with Jack or just run all 3?

frank steeple
#

Yes

#

Completely removing alsa from the equation and just using pulse or jack is going to be pretty much impossible

bright shell
#

F

#

Ok, so I'll probably experiment with Alsa and Jack

#

Is Jack eventually going to replace Alsa? Is that the goal?

frank steeple
#

Probably not

#

They're two completely different things

bright shell
#

Ohhh, I'm thinking of Pipewire

frank steeple
#

Also different

#

tldr is that alsa probably isn't going to be replaced without a very good reason

bright shell
#

What is Pipewire used for?

#

The same thing as Jack and Pulse?

frank steeple
#

Yup

#

You have alsa, which provides low level system calls and is part of the kernel itself, and then you have all the various front ends like jack, pulse, and pipewire that interface with alsa

bright shell
#

Looks like Pipewire might be a good all in one solution. It interfaces with Pulse, Alsa and Jack

frank steeple
#

Kinda

#

It's a lot more complicated than that

strong plover
#

Ohhh yeah I guess I use alsa with Jack
