it says i could need the windows ten key for before 2010

#

but i got the key 2 years back so im good

#

rignht?

dawn socket
cosmic siren
#

but i click on the plus and it listsa bunch of requirements but nothing regarding the actual download

cosmic siren
# dawn socket Yep

Is there a download link that you could direct me to or is it somewhere else

#

Sorry just not an expert here

wooden flint
#

damn you were in the chat when people told him “use dban”

#

so I did use dban

#

Well thanks for helping while I was gone…I’ll help if needed

dawn socket
#

I didn't see anyone suggest it, but I've been trying to help while at work.

#

So things are easily missed for me.

cosmic siren
#

5 gigs?

dawn socket
#

Yep

wooden flint
#

well, it just seemed like I was doing something wrong when I suggested using windows installer to wipe the hard drive when someone mentioned “use dban”

#

very tiny brain I have

dawn socket
#

Or trolling

wooden flint
#

no one pointed any attention to it, but I just decided to go with what a more technically inclined person went. Peer pressure.

cosmic siren
#

wtf that actually could take like an hour

wooden flint
#

Davy, hope the computer goes well. Be sure to set a passcode on your PC this time so your bro can’t get on without you knowing

cosmic siren
#

I made that up it was me

#

but thanks

dawn socket
#

A lot of people come in and say their sibling did something on their PC. It's no biggie.

cosmic siren
#

I was downloading something safe but there was a like fake download button and it was too late

#

before i realized i said allow to "let this make changes to your device:

dawn socket
#

Yep. Gotta be diligent. Do you have an adblocker?

cosmic siren
#

nope but im gonna get one

#

It was like 4AM so if it was at a normal hour I wouldv'e caught it

wooden flint
#

Oh, and this time don’t use Avast. Use something like Malwarebytes and periodically scan with both it and windows defender

cosmic siren
#

bruuuhh

wooden flint
#

had a better experience using malwarebytes

cosmic siren
#

Well im fresh installing anyway

#

bruuuhhh its only on 1gb of 5

wooden flint
#

it’ll take time, might as well just relax while it installs

dawn socket
cosmic siren
#

does that make sens

dawn socket
wooden flint
#

downloads, yes

dawn socket
#

Once you start the installation process it'll have you select a drive. Since you already have windows installed they will be listed as partitions. You will need to delete all partitions on the 1 drive that you are installing windows on.

#

With that being said.. how many drives do you have?

#

If you have just 1, delete all partitions in the list.

cosmic siren
#

what do you mean by that

dawn socket
cosmic siren
#

wait some mushrooom dude said that the IRQL isnt fixed always from a fresh install?

cosmic siren
#

you dont have to tell me

dawn socket
cosmic siren
#

ok @dawn socket its downlooaded

dawn socket
cosmic siren
#

its taking a bit to transfer so itll be a second

dawn socket
#

Gotta glove up. If I don't respond right away, I apologize

cosmic siren
dawn socket
#

You got it put on the ventoy USB?

cosmic siren
#

I deleted the dban and replaced it with the win10 thing you sent in the ventoy

#

Do I take the stick out @dawn socket?

cosmic siren
#

I’m not quite sure what the next step is

dawn socket
cosmic siren
#

So take the stick out of the laptop and put it in my infected pc

dawn socket
#

I forgot you were using the laptop to download the file xD

cosmic siren
#

Go into bios and boot under the thst thingamijig

dawn socket
#

Yep

cosmic siren
#

Boot in normal mode

#

There are a lot of options

dawn socket
dawn socket
cosmic siren
#

Except there isn’t grub2

cosmic siren
dawn socket
cosmic siren
#

Oh shooot it actually did something

#

Well it just sit here for a while?

cosmic siren
dawn socket
cosmic siren
#

I thought I didn’t need a product key

#

Oh shi I didn’t read the whole thing

#

Mb 😂😂

dawn socket
#

It's starting to get a little busy at work. I'll respond when I can. I apologize for any delays

#

I'll be off in a out 40-50 minutes.

cosmic siren
#

I CRASHED IN THE MIDDLE OF IT

#

CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT

dawn socket
#

Try again.

cosmic siren
# dawn socket Hm a CPU error.

It says if you’re reinstalling you don’t need the product key but when I select I don’t have one to get past the menu

#

It asks for the type of OS I’d like to install

vestal ibex
#

Home

#

Regular old home is all 95% of people need

cosmic siren
vestal ibex
#

Yes

#

Not home N

#

Just home

cosmic siren
#

If I want a nuked drive without any files left over which one do I choose

vestal ibex
#

Custom

#

Then you'll select the drive you want to install to, hit format

#

When it's done hit next

cosmic siren
#

To “restart”

vestal ibex
#

Once you format the largest partition it'll be completely wiped

#

Alternatively you can delete all the partitions

cosmic siren
#

What would that do

cosmic siren
vestal ibex
#

Basically the same thing but with an extra step

#

Yes

cosmic siren
#

Does it matter?

#

There are 4 partitions

#

But only ones has 930gb others are less than 1gb

dawn socket
#

@vestal ibex thank you. I got super busy with customers there.

vestal ibex
#

Maybe, sometimes deleting them is needed

cosmic siren
vestal ibex
#

Delete all 4 if that's the way you want to go

#

Then just select the unallocated space and hit next

dawn socket
#

If you only have the 1 drive.. I'd delete all of the partitions.

#

At least.. that's what I do.

cosmic siren
#

You guys are saying this like it’s a gamble

#

What are the risks of it

vestal ibex
#

It's not a risk, just different ways to accomplish the same thing

cosmic siren
#

Delete all 4 ok

cosmic siren
vestal ibex
#

Yes

cosmic siren
#

Next?

vestal ibex
#

yep

cosmic siren
#

Or do I need to do anything else once it’s unallocated

dawn socket
#

Next

vestal ibex
#

It'll handle everything on its own. You can technically create the partitions yourself but letting it do it the way it wants to avoids a bug.

cosmic siren
#

Ok it’s installing now

#

Does this take a while?

vestal ibex
#

5-15 minutes

#

On a SSD at least

cosmic siren
#

That’s what I got so we good

dawn socket
#

On that note.. the SSD for my laptop just shipped SmolExcite

cosmic siren
#

It finished that whole 5-15 minutes process and brought me back here

cosmic siren
vestal ibex
#

Pull out the usb drive and reboot

cosmic siren
#

Is that normal or nah

vestal ibex
#

It's fine, just means the USB took boot priority over the SSD

cosmic siren
#

Well I got some random as error code

#

Why is this happening

#

Does this mean I have to put the USB stick back in and do that whole thing over

#

@vestal ibex

vestal ibex
#

Hmm

#

That's a new one to me but yeah I guess it wants you to do it again

cosmic siren
#

Well my pc has had problems people in microcenter hadn’t seen before so doesn’t surprise me

vestal ibex
#

This time pull the USB when it's counting down to restart after copying the files

cosmic siren
#

This screen?

#

Pull the USB??

vestal ibex
#

After that's done and it's saying "restart in 15... 14..."

cosmic siren
#

Oh I didn’t see that part bc I was away from my pc

#

Thanks

cosmic siren
cosmic siren

Hey falcie, Reo, and mr breadrolls thst was a multi hour ordeal that ended up succeeding thank you for dedicating the time to helping me

Working with msi b650 mobo (I think it has bios 5) not gonna try and flash till I get my graphics card in like a week (hopefully 💀) but is there some good guides anyone can recommend so I can be ready I have like zero bios knowledge

Other than the pinned install guide obviously lol

#

Guys so I’m planning to have a nas server in one of my ssd and windows in another. I’ll sometimes boot windows if I wanna game on it and nas when I need the Plex server or transfer files, but I’m not going to need it 24/7. However, is it safe to do so? I’ve heard people say windows will go from the ssd to others corrupting truenas software but I’m not sure if that’s possible/true and if it’s safe to do

vestal ibex
#

I have seen windows decide to destroy grub boot loaders randomly. Usually when it does one of it's unannounced, unwanted updates.

#

What you could do is put GRUB on a removeable drive to boot truenas, and remove the drive when you use windows

dim glacier
#

Dang this is a little complicated

#

So my storage pools might contain backups to my phones and maybe laptop/devices, would windows destroy anything there in the hard drives too?

vestal ibex
#

Nah data is perfectly safe

#

It's the boot sector that gets wrecked

dim glacier
#

That’s good, but let’s say that I wanted to game on truenas using a VM with windows on it, would it wreck the boot sector?

#

I’m initially going to just test some games and do ai upscaling on it before I turn it into a full on nas server because I’m just curious how it’ll perform

vestal ibex
#

VM is totally isolated

#

In fact you could run truenas in a VM and you won't need to pass through your GPU to play games that way

dim glacier
#

I’ve seen the phrase say pass through a lot when people say gaming on a vm, what does that mean?

vestal ibex
#

(nvidia passthrough is actual garbage)

dim glacier
#

Ohh

#

On the vm itself, would I need to download the chipset and drivers?

vestal ibex
#

There's a VM addon pack you would install

#

Exact procedure varies by what program

#

That would also enable things like drag and drop between OS's

dim glacier
#

Hmm this seems simple

#

Let’s say that I wanted to turn my PC into a windows pc first, boot from the windows nvme and not touch truenas or the other hard drives. If I were to do that, then erase windows from the nvme ssd and then boot from a normal ssd, there is no wаy there’s any traces of windows left on my nvme drive right?

#

Sorry, that might sound confusing.
First, I’ll have only the nvme ssd with windows. After I’m done with that, I’ll erase the nvme ssd.

vestal ibex
#

Erase the partitions on the SSD, make new ones and format it to EXT4. No trace of Windows will exist.

#

It would even be extremely difficult to recover data at that point if the SSD were stolen somehow

dim glacier
#

Wait a min, I can use truenas to erase the partitions on the ssd right?

vestal ibex
#

Yes

dim glacier
#

Kk thx for the help

tepid silo
#

Why not just run Plex on Windows, also GPU passthrough can work fine, but I wouldn't game on it unless you want to try for the sake of it

dim glacier
#

I wanted to try something new other than windows, and I hate how slow windows can be sometimes when transferring files through SMB

charred sentinel
#

How not recommended is making 1 or 2 more partitions on a single drive for dual booting or triple booting

#

all would be windows

#

i know there are risks but i can't remember what they are

vestal ibex
#

You could do it but there's a chance that when one updates, it'll revert to a single boot and you'll need to re-detect the other operating systems.

#

Recovery mode would also be difficult if you needed it

charred sentinel
#

the secondary and tertiary are going to be constantly reinstalled if that means anything

vestal ibex
#

But you can work around that with a usb

#

You may also need to increase the size of the EFI partition; windows is known to allocate more than it needs but triple boot might be pushing it

cinder mauve
#

Hey y'all, what's the best laptop (performance wise) that I can get for 1k USD?

#

Won't be gaming

#

Just running fairly "heavy" SW

#

Will be using for studying (computer science: coding and stuff), making music (DAWs, plug-ins...), occasional photoshop and editing

#

Thanks in advance

dim glacier

#

I keep hearing clicking noises and it’s driving me crazy since it’s nothing being done on it and it’s two brand new ironwolf drives

hello i need to ask smth about windows
i have a laptop but i cant use two finger scroll
idk why

spice beacon
#

Some older laptops don't have it? Could be missing the trackpad driver

cinder mauve
#

@spice beaconhow do i know if the driver is missing or laptop doesnt support it

spice beacon
cinder mauve
#

idk if the drivers even installed correctly or not

spice beacon
#

Well if you went through the install wizard they should be, if you want you can check in device manager, should be under input devices or something

#

Also just google your laptop model + 2 finger scroll to see if others have it or if the model just doesn't

dim glacier
trail vale
#

I don't know if anyone here would have an answer to this issue and I could be wrong, but something seems to be off with my home wifi. I am looking at task manager network utilization and I am only hitting 1% or 2% while gaming, but will still lag tf out instead of usage value increasing. When this is an issue, there's not usually anyone else on the wifi, and my wifi just poops the bed.

viral eagle
#

Compared to streaming or downloading

#

(The % doesn't really matter here)

trail vale
#

.<

#

also one sec Ill see what network % is when streaming

viral eagle
#

Getting DCd does seem odd

#

Do you have high ping in-game?

trail vale
#

yeah

#

I run 140+ in game in league

viral eagle
#

Ethernet or wifi

trail vale
#

wifi

#

and I download at about 200-500kbps

viral eagle
#

Also make sure you're on the closest server to you geographically

trail vale
#

though when I look at my network details (in task manager) it says link speed is 260mbps

#

then goes to 720

#

and drops back down to 260

viral eagle
#

Run an internet speed test in your browser and see what the up/down/ping is

trail vale
#

the one by ookla good?

viral eagle
#

Yeah that works

trail vale
#

btw utilization goes up to 2.4% when streaming netflix

#

when running ping test, should I be using a server near the host of the game? (i.e riot servers), or just the automatic one?

viral eagle
#

Just auto for now at least

trail vale
#

so I have crap upload, but 6.14mbps download

#

but I download in kbps? xD

viral eagle
#

Yeah that download should be enough to play league on but maybe the up is an issue

junior widget
#

can someone tell me how to delete a windows boot manager from a m2 drive in windows 11? i boot to a raid....it keeps trying to reboot to the m2 but windows has never been on that drive?

viral eagle
#

Also the ping is pretty bad

trail vale
#

im just so confused Sadge

viral eagle
#

Yeah I dunno what's up

#

Restart router, adjust wifi antenna is really all I can suggest, sorry

trail vale
#

all good

viral eagle
#

Someone else in this server knows more than me so could hang here or go ask in a different channel

trail vale
#

I'm supposed to be getting telus fiber installed in a few weeks, and I just fear that stuff is gunna stay broke

kindred eagle
#

@trail vale task manager doesnt factor in ping btw

#

Probably just bad ping in game

#

Game servers are in far reigon

trail vale
# kindred eagle Probably just bad ping in game

but why do I get low upload and download speeds then, keeping at low network utilization? Wouldn't it adjust to increase speeds by consuming more bandwidth? As I mentioned above, even for downloading stuff, I only download at about 200-500kbps, but my network details in task manager show my linkspeed at 260mbps?

kindred eagle
#

Not internet bandwidth

trail vale
#

even running ookla speedtest it shows download of 6mbps kekw

kindred eagle
#

Yeah

#

Thats ur internet speed

#

Not local

trail vale
#

so a portion of that internet speed is what is used when downloading, not all of it though, right?

kindred eagle
#

Yeah

trail vale
#

hmm

#

its just whack that home by myself I download at such low speed then it says that I have like 10x that speed total

last gorge
#

link speed is usually the speed of the physical connection to the main access point, internet speed is the speed of that connection to the worldwide web via your ISP(Internet Service Provider). The internet speed is determined by whatever you pay the ISP for but lag can happen on any end on the connection.
In a perfect world you would have everything hardwired but that is not always easy for people. WiFi is easy to setup but easily disrupted by physical distance to the antenna and any physical barriers that may be block it in line of sight, ex: walls, closed doors, etc

#

so for me all of my links are 1000mbps to local devices but the realistic speed to ISP ends up being around ~800mbps (I pay for gigabit)

trail vale
#

both on the same pc mind you

last gorge
#

that can vary based off many variables. As I mentioned WiFi can be very delicate and producing inconsistent results. It can also vary on the location and capacity of the download servers from whatever site you are using (this is also why people still use torrents for larger files like isos) and it can be lower based off the type of file being sent.
So say perhaps speedtest has a server within 50 miles of you but the nearest server for the site to download is 5000 miles away. Extreme example but that is the general idea.

The only other thing I could think of immediately is bandwidth limiters. Windows itself and many game launchers sometimes have limiters to only download at certain speeds if you have something else running or to save data in case you are using a cellular plan

#

I know steam likes to limit the speeds if you are running a game, or like battlenet limiting the speed on background patches

trail vale
#

ill try to look for some of that stuff

#

thanks 🙂

It shouldn't go back to step 1, you're supposed to remove the USB when it's counting down to reboot

Do I need to replace my laptops ram if it keeps saying memory management with a green screen crash?

last gorge
#

There are a few things it could be, generally for windows error you can look up the stop code to get a general idea of some of the possible issues

vestal ibex
last gorge
#

I didn't even know green was a thing lol

still marten
still marten
vestal ibex
#

You'll need to reinstall probably

still marten
#

I guessed that was the case, that sucks

last gorge
#

Though not impossible I feel it would be more related to the software (possibly needing a full reinstall) than a hardware error. I've very rarely seen ram fail before, I think out of all PCs I've work with in the past 10-12 years I've had to replace the ram in 1 laptop

still marten
#

Okay nice then, I wont worry too much about the hardware if you say so, the reason i said ram was because i did do the ram stress tes built in and it said there were problems

#

But it is probably insider

#

For more info, a long time ago when 11 came out i wanted to try it, so i used cmd to opt into it, and i believe i used cmd to opt out as well, but my pc wont update out of them

#

;///

vestal ibex
#

Yeah that sounds about right. And you've probably been stuck on that early build this whole time.

still marten
#

I think so xD thank you for the confirmation

#

Then if ill proceed with that, im not sure how long id take me to write down what i have or copy everything, so is there any viable option other than losing everything?

vestal ibex
#

You can install over your current OS, so you don't lose files. You'll just need to reinstall programs.

#

When you go through the installer, try the upgrade install option first

still marten
#

Ok thats no big deal then and would be quick

#

Using a usb right?

vestal ibex
#

Yep

still marten
#

Ok

#

"Installation media"?

vestal ibex
#

That usually refers to the USB drive that has a windows installer ready

still marten
#

Ok awesome i have the website, wish me luck lol

vestal ibex
#

It can include a DVD with that naming, that's why they would call it that

still marten
#

Also one quick question

#

Since applications will need to just be reinstalled, will all library folders be preserved?

vestal ibex
#

Yes but you may need to cut/paste them to the new location

still marten
#

Ok ill do that now

vestal ibex
#

That'll be after the reinstall

still marten
#

Yes sorry, i mean ill copy them now to a different drive

vestal ibex
#

Things would be right where you left them but if your username changes it'll give you new default libraries. You'd just move the stuff from the old ones to the new.

still marten
#

Ok, that would only be if I go to an admin or public account right?

#

Good then

vestal ibex
#

If you have the admin account you can give yourself access to any folder

still marten
#

Ok so I got back I’m just setting up the tool, is it useful to just select “upgrade this pc now” or do I need to put it on the usb first for the process? That seems like it would just take way more time

vestal ibex
#

You can start with the upgrade button inside the OS

#

If that fails then you boot from the USB and do the full reinstall

still marten
#

Ok

still marten
#

So I did that, worked good, but since i turned on my pc it is telling me there is a "cumulative update preview" Is it trying to get me back into the preview builds?

#

I will do a full reinstall then if thats the case

#

Ill google my build first

icy stream
#

I gotta ask am I the only one that gets annoyed by how the windows 11 taskbar starts default in the middle insteand of the left side

vestal ibex
#

It takes a little getting used to. They made it more like the Apple layout.

#

It's easy to change back at least. Took them long enough to add that feature.

The fact that they removed the option for the expanded taskbar tabs bothers me more

Guys if I put a pc to hibernate or sleep during a thunderstorm then a power outage occurs, will it lose its state?

I don't think so, it's probably Microsoft account since I used my mail

#

Is there a way to make it local?

#

There's an option that's something like "log with a local account" and if clicked opens up a windows saying: "change to local acc.?"
I translated this so I'm not sure if that's how you'd find the settings in windows (en)

#

Guess I did it

#

Way simpler than I thought

#

Thanks for the help anyways, I didn't even know it was something abt the Microsoft account, and I always thought the mail was required just to have better acces to Microsoft services on your device

#

Btw my lsi 9240 8i just arrived, I'll test it tomorrow

Maybe perhaps it will also use more RAM, or basically be more demanding to run than Windows 10. Or I can't use certain combinations of games and apps as well as before

And even then the issue I had was just a visual bug, nothing major

Yall I got a prob. Fiancées laptop has win11 and last night it disabled the wifi chip. I've done all the recommended solutions and nothing works. Would replacing the physical card fix it?

#

Only thing I haven't done is full pc reset cause she refuses to lose any of her stuff

vestal ibex

Replacing it may or may not work depending on the problem.
What specifically have you tried? Most laptops also have a hardware button for the wifi, it could have been hit accidentally.

rigid horizon
#

In the device manager it said that windows disabled it due to malfunction code 43. We reinstalled the drivers, disabled and reinabled hardware, ran a few scans through the command prompt and restarted it several times during it

vestal ibex

Are the scans you tried SFC and DISM?

vestal ibex

Ok

#

So the software is basically ruled out at this point but there's a few more things to try

#

Have you booted Linux off a USB before?

#

If Linux is able to use the wifi without issues then A: It might be OS related after all and B: Linux might actually just fix it if it's in a "stuck" state

I will try booting off a USB here in a bit

rigid horizon

I can't create a boot drive, that pc is the only one with windows 11. Unless I can make it on that specific computer, would that work?

You should be able to download a Linux ISO and a writer program like Rufus on another device (like a phone) and copy the files off the device to create the USB that way, if Internet access is the trouble point there

I installed windows visual c++ 2015-2022 but nothing changed and also I tried to change new vcruntime140.dll that i downloaded in windows folder but it says need permission to do it but i am admin in system.
I don't have this problem with all programs while instaling
Plzzzzzzz help

vestal ibex
# barren lodge Hello everyone. I have problem while instaling some programs like rockstar game ...

If you're the admin, then disable UAC temporarily so it's not complaining about permissions. (type uac into the start menu and the setting comes right up)
Then install both the x86 and x64 versions of the 2013 and 2015-2022 vcredist https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170
You can install the older ones too if you want, some things do still use them like older games.

idle dragon
dawn socket
#

Also, make sure "Wake the computer to run this task" is the only thing checked in Conditions.

idle dragon
#

Yes

#

Everything the way you said

dawn socket
idle dragon
#

Yep

idle dragon
#

So what could it be?

idle dragon
#

Solved, apparently you just need to set the task to be run with "administrators" account since (at least for me) it's the only working one for when the pc is in sleep mode

#

Ofc solved a problem and a new one appeared...
The pc now automatically goes in sleep mode every 5 minutes or so
I checked power settings but everything about auto sleep mode is off... Maybe task scheduler is being funny and starting the task every 5mins...? Idk

#

Actually task scheduler is not causing the problem, since it says the last time the task ran is always a different time than the one when the pc goes in sleep mode

#

Another "problem" I have is that the auto sleep mode (which uses a batch file to work) doesn't show anything in CMD (not even the CMD window itself) when it starts with task scheduler...
I think to solve this I could make another batch file (this one will be opened by task scheduler) that opens the other batch file so maybe it shows full screen and not running in the background somewhere
So basically the 1st file (opened by task sc.) is "start batch2.bat" and batch2.bat is all the commands needed for auto sleep mode

dawn socket
idle dragon
#

How? If I open it manually it shows up full screen, it's just task scheduler that has this behaviour and just runs things in background instead of showing them on the screen

dawn socket
#

Change the name of the program/script in the task scheduler to "cmd"

Add an Argument ( /k "C:\My Batch File Folder\MyScript.bat")

dawn socket
#

@idle dragon did you ever get it figured out?

idle dragon
#

Yep, I found another way of doing it, I wrote a 2nd batch file that has the command "start /max batch1.exe" or something like that so it can start the actual sleep mode batch file in full screen.
I had to do this because task scheduler opens up programs in the background so you won't notice them, and in my case that would mean you could be just using the pc as usual and it goes in sleep mode randomly

I've got a small problem with wake on Lan from my phone, I got this app called WoL-on, which allows me to turn on my server remotely, when I'm connected to my WiFi everything works fine and it starts up, when I'm not connected to my WiFi it sometimes does and other times doesn't work, the strange part is that when it doesn't work I actually see the orange led on the ethernet port flashing whenever I send a packet to turn it on

idle dragon
# vestal ibex You said there's 2 interfaces it could be using right? Ethernet and WiFi? Each p...

Nope, that's not what I meant. What I mean is this: the server is connected via ethernet to my main router/modem. When I try to use wake on Lan from my phone (and I'm connected to the same network as my server) it works every time. When I'm outside, not connected to my network (using mobile data 3/4G) it sometimes does and other times doesn't work. The only thing is that when it doesn't work and I come back home and try out the WoL using mobile data, I see the orange light flashing on the ethernet port every time I click "wake up".

#

As if my server is always receiving the signals/packets for WoL but they don't work for some reason

#

This thing has got HYNIX eMMC wha

vestal ibex
#

Ah I see. Make sure that the port for WoL is open on your router and on your PC.

idle dragon
#

It is

#

It simply works most of the time but not always...

#

But the strangest part is the blinking light when the packets are received

#

But doesn't start... I really don't know what's going on

near furnace
vestal ibex
#

My computer has wake on USB disabled by default, and I have hibernation disabled as well which does affect the sleep states. So unless I specifically go into BIOS to enable wake on USB, it doesn't wake from sleep if I hit my keyboard.

#

It's probably Windows related like MrM said for you. Windows has just decided it wants to use a deeper sleep state which releases wake control to the BIOS.

near furnace
#

it doesn't wake from sleep if I hit my keyboard.
thing is tho it's been working fine for years,
the few times it didn't work was specifically because I unplugged the mech keyboard and somehow it had trouble getting recognized when plugged back in, which wasn't the case this time

and what I'm curious about is how it goes from looking like the PC is off/sleep, to logon screen in less than 1 sec

#

I use it for Plex since it's so flaky

idle dragon
#

I Always wanted something like a ad blocker on my entire network but I have no idea how to set it up

vestal ibex
#

You need to flash a custom OS to the router

#

What model router do you have? I can tell you what options there are

#

(alternatively you can set up a pihole but that's harder and more expensive)

idle dragon
#

It's a fastgate (from Huawei) I have no idea if you'll find it outside of Italy and it's probably a uncommon modem to have at home.

#

I saw a video a long time ago of a person using a Pi but as far as I remember it wasn't an easy setup

vestal ibex
#

Yeah the idea with the pihole is to put it between the router and the device so it can block known advert URLs

#

That method does add latency to the connection, and again it's not cheap (unless you use hardware you already have) or easy

idle dragon
#

I do have a raspberry pi3

#

Or something

vestal ibex
#

Is it one with a dual NIC

idle dragon
#

I have to check

vestal ibex
#

Ok there's no huawei routers supported by dd-wrt but there's a bunch supported by openwrt, so once you know the model I can find out what huawei model it's based on and give you that image to try to flash

#

I'm using openwrt myself and it's really easy. It's basically Linux.

#

I just wish I had more than 256MB of RAM so I could add even more functions to it. I'm sitting at 187MB used when basically idle.

idle dragon
#

Does flashing a custom software on my router basically reset it?

vestal ibex
#

Yes

#

It's like installing a new OS on your computer

idle dragon
#

Uuuh
..mmmh
I'd prefer not to cuz I've got so many things configured on it and any IP change would mean I have to set back many of my home devices, and I guess my static IP would be changed

vestal ibex
#

You could manually reconfigure everything but I understand if you don't want to

idle dragon
#

Probably better with the pi

#

What would it take? Just the pi?

vestal ibex
#

The pi and it would need at least 2 network interfaces

idle dragon
#

Is there a way to block ads only on one router (for example on my second one)

vestal ibex
#

Preferably both ethernet

idle dragon
vestal ibex
#

Yes put the pi between the first and second router

idle dragon
#

Amazing
So I can get "high" latency on my 2nd router to watch like yt videos and other stuff like browsing, meanwhile use my 1st router for gaming

#

Would the ad blocker apply for my phone too right?

#

That's the main thing I want

vestal ibex
#

If it's connected to router 2 yes

idle dragon
#

Good

#

I remember a guy said with the pi he was able to block something over 65% of ads

vestal ibex
#

That sounds about right

idle dragon
#

Which would be nice

#

Yt ads are super annoying
I sometimes get 2* 15second ads on one minute long videos

vestal ibex
#

Thanks for reminding me to update my router firmware and software btw, there's a major update that fixes an issue I have apparently

idle dragon
#

:]

#

My priority now is setting up shared windows folders (with psw) over network and then I'll probably make the pi hole thing ad blocker or whatever it is

#

Did YouTube really "ban" some chrome extension that block the ads?

vestal ibex
#

Yeah by restricting what addons can do. They made it impossible to keep a blocking database by setting the size limit really small.

idle dragon
#

My windows 10 ultra lite doesn't allow you to set a different keyboard layout so now all my keys except letters and numbers are matched incorrectly

#

That's really annoying

#

Do you think I could change the user folder name by simply renaming it as if it was a simple and basic folder?

vestal ibex
#

No

#

Even changing the user name itself doesn't change that folder name, it WILL break the OS if you do that

idle dragon
#

I already tried that on my surface and it did cause many problems (I then solved) but here I cannot change user name as you'd do on a normal version of windows 10, is it ok if I change it on advanced user management?

#

At least the name you see on the log in option

vestal ibex
#

In order to change the user name folder you have to create a new local admin user with the name you want and transfer everything to that user

idle dragon
#

Would that be difficult?

vestal ibex
#

That depends on how deep you've gone in your modifying

#

Usually, no it's just a cut/paste

idle dragon
#

I've also got barely one GB free on my mem. So idk if I'll take up everything

idle dragon
#

I just installed chrome but that can be downloaded again if necessary

vestal ibex
#

Should be easy then. A new user would take up very little space.

idle dragon
#

But can I delete the old one after? (Te main one)

vestal ibex
#

Yes you can delete the old account after from user management, and then delete the folder if it's left behind

idle dragon
#

Could you guide me through this procedure

#

:]

vestal ibex
idle dragon
#

Rn I'm at: win+R > netplwiz > advanced tab > advanced user management >

vestal ibex

vestal ibex
idle dragon
#

Nope

#

It's grayed out

#

Idk why

vestal ibex
#

That's probably from you stripping the OS

idle dragon
#

I guess... Here?

vestal ibex
#

You can do it from an admin command prompt

#

net user /add [username] [password]

idle dragon
#

Should I do it from CMD then?

vestal ibex
#

net localgroup administrators [username] /add

idle dragon
#

Oke I guess

#

How do I open CMD as admin with run command?

vestal ibex
#

Right click your start menu button

idle dragon
#

There's not CMD on start

#

Lol

vestal ibex
#

When you right click it doesn't have the option for command prompt or terminal?

#

I know really old versions of 10 didn't have that but a newer one should

idle dragon
#

Maybe this will work

vestal ibex
#

My next suggestion would have been to type "cmd" into the start menu and right click that to get the "run as admin"

idle dragon
vestal ibex
#

See that's information that would have been good to know lol

#

The last ditch way is to navigate to your windows folder and right click cmd.exe directly

idle dragon

vestal ibex

Yep

idle dragon
#

Ok

vestal ibex
#

I'm guessing your stripped down windows doesn't have powershell

#

Because you can add a keyboard layout with powershell

idle dragon
#

Well
Let me check

#

Will I find it in sys32

#

?

vestal ibex
#

C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0

idle dragon
#

Btw I'm done with the users, do I just have to check if they appeared?

vestal ibex
#

You can logout and log in to the new user, it'll go through the new user setup

idle dragon
#

Oh well...
There's no user setup I guess
With this install it simply did everything by itself. So there's just one account with the same name, that's why I'm asking you to create a new user with different name

#

Main acc. Is "Tech aarohi"

#

There is windows power shell

#

Do I change the layout later?

#

It doesn't really matter rn

vestal ibex
idle dragon
#

I guess I can disable the other user to get it to log on automatically

#

Maybe

#

Idk you tell me what to do

vestal ibex
#

From the login screen

idle dragon
#

So just restart and see if it asks to log wit the new acc?

vestal ibex
#

No not restart since you have it set to auto sign in

#

You have to log out

idle dragon
#

There's sign out option

#

Or change account settings

vestal ibex
#

windows key+R
logoff

idle dragon
#

Ok, btw sign in option in settings freezes the window

#

Lol

#

Ok it did work apparently

#

So now I'm basically admin, as if I was with the other account?

vestal ibex
#

Yes

idle dragon
#

Can I delete the other one?
(If it loads)

vestal ibex
#

Yes

idle dragon
#

Ok "preparing windows"

#

One sec

#

Done

#

Now
How do I delete it completely

vestal ibex
#

From admin command prompt
net user [username] /delete

idle dragon
#

Oh god I have to find CMD again

#

This thing is kinda slow

#

Blurry pic

vestal ibex
#

Put quotes around the user name since there's a space in it

#

"Tech aarohi"

idle dragon
#

Done

#

That's all?

vestal ibex
#

Yep the user should be gone out of the netplwiz list

#

And you can delete the folder if it didn't delete already

idle dragon
#

Yeah

#

Let me check

#

What's "take ownership" option on folders?

vestal ibex
#

It changes the owner of the folder, which can help with permission issues sometimes

idle dragon
#

Ooh that's an useful option
Why don't I have that on my normal windows 10 pc?

vestal ibex
#

So to change the keyboard layout, from an admin powershell:
Set-WinUserLanguageList -LanguageList it-IT, en-US -force

#

(assuming your current layout is set to US)

idle dragon
#

How do I check the current layout?

#

I'll try it in a few minutes
I'm taking a shower
Brb

vestal ibex
idle dragon
#

I'll do everything tomorrow and let you know if it works

Guys what’s a good vm that you can use in your lan network to basically do mobile gaming and though the iGPU?
I’m trying to see if I can use my phone to play games from my pc that’s on 24/7

#

I also don’t want to install games on the main pc itself, that’s where the vm is, but I can’t get virturalbox to make some games that needs a gpu work with the iGPU

Usually it’s igpu for host os and dgpu for vm software i ran vmware and qemu in the past, i liked qemu but setup is not the easiest. If you are trying to do this with only a igpu it won’t run well enough for games

Back in the days, when I was making eBay and website auction pages, Id use Microsoft Frontpage. I'd use it for years, adding in code that was past its ability to do, then if tested well, paste the code into the webpage code section, or save it as an HTML page, and redirect Apache server to the folder containing the HTML code. MS never updated that program and was wondering if something like it exists today with all the latest features.

#

I liked front page because I could test buttons and links I made and find broken links during testing.

There is nothing wrong with my headset, ive tested a seperate headset and have the same issue. Pretty sure its a software issue. Checked online to help as well and nothing worked. If anyone can help id greatly appreciate it. Just hit me with a ping

Btw I just set up my pi-hole and it works but blocks very few ads. Both on my phone and pc, is there something I may have got wrong that is causing it to not work properly?

idle dragon
vestal ibex
idle dragon
#

Okk thanks, I'll try that. I've watched a few videos on how to set it up the right way but where it comes to adding block lists I can't figure out certain things because the GUI on the "website" is different than the ones showed in the video and I can't find certain settings

vestal ibex
#

With a pihole it's usually just as simple as telling it which directory the block lists are in and putting the .txt files in it

idle dragon
#

Good, I'm jus not familiar with Pi's, for me it's like using Linux, I just can't understand it

vestal ibex
#

It's like Linux without a GUI generally, unless you add a GUI but that takes resources

idle dragon
#

Well... The pi hole just runs on the normal pi-os that has "some" gui so it's already something

vestal ibex
#

I'd usually connect by SSH instead of using that

idle dragon
#

Does the pi hole start automatically if the pc restarts?

vestal ibex
#

It can if you set it to

idle dragon
#

Rn I turned it off for tonight and I'll work with it tomorrow

vestal ibex
#

I don't know what the default behavior is

idle dragon
#

Thanks for everything

#

Btw do you know if there's a software I could use to share folders over network and make them password locked (or accessible by specific users only)? I tried doing all of this with the built in win10 features (folder sharing) but I encounter many problems

vestal ibex
#

Since it's to be shared with Windows clients I'd recommend a SMB server

#

In linux it's in the Samba package

#

It's a little complicated and involves editing config files but once it's running it's more reliable than Windows shares

idle dragon
#

My server is windows10 based and "should" have some terabytes of storage so I'd probably prefer to set everything up in there and not on my pi, either with software or directly in windows with built in features (I could try again by simply sharing the folders)

vestal ibex
#

Windows sharing is the same as a samba server. It's just Windows sucks at doing it, even though they designed it and stubbornly refuse to use better things.

#

If it's just file sharing you're doing you could set up a FTP server

idle dragon
#

My main problem is if I set two different folders with different login credentials, I can input the credentials from another pc outside my network but it doesn't just allow me to acces the specific folder, but ALL of the other ones too

#

I have no idea why

vestal ibex
#

Sounds like a filezilla ftp server would work, you can set up users and their access rights

idle dragon
#

Never heard of that but I guess everything would work over windows sharing mechanism

vestal ibex
#

You would need a FTP client program (or app for mobile) to be able to connect to the server, which is still better than Windows smb because it's really hard to access smb on mobile devices.

idle dragon
#

What about the pi-based server? Won't it be slower since the pi doesn't have that much power? I've got both sas SSDs and HDDs which are pretty fast and I'm planning to make entire pc backups (1-2TB each) overy once in a while. So I'd need the maximum speed offered by the drives

#

Even tho my connection is basically the bottleneck between the user and the server

vestal ibex
#

You can always use a jbod or something

idle dragon
#

The server is supposed to be jbod, no raid at all atm

vestal ibex
#

I mean a separate jbod appliance that you could connect the pi to through the network port

idle dragon
#

Like a hdd enclosure normally used for Nas?

#

Those are really expensive

vestal ibex
#

How many disks do you have

idle dragon
# vestal ibex How many disks do you have

Rn it's just one because I have to get a PSU connected to my other drives, but if I'm able to make everything work properly I'll be able to get 8 sas drives on my server

#

They're different sizes, speeds, types...

#

Laying around I've got about 10 400GB SSD, same for 2TB 2.5" HDDs and 4 4TB 3.5"

vestal ibex
#

And you have ~10 of each?

idle dragon
#

Yep

#

Except for the 4TB drives

#

Just 4 of those

idle dragon
#

But I'm planning on using something like all 4× 4TB HDDs, 3× 2TB HDDs and just one SSD

#

For a total of 8 drives

vestal ibex
#

Used JBODS are cheap AF

#

That thing was easily 4k new

#

All these businesses that closed during covid have to liquidate

idle dragon
#

I can't get more storage because I don't have enough pcie slots on my optiplex, so no more expansion cards and I feel like id just waste money since 22TB of storage is already a lot

idle dragon
vestal ibex
#

And it fits 24 full size drives

#

So it has to be

idle dragon
#

$940 shipping PepeRealizes

vestal ibex
#

#

lol

idle dragon
#

Us to Italy it's always a tragedy for those shippings

#

There's a store that sells xeons processors and I've always wanted one because they were cheap and then they all had $100 shipping

vestal ibex
#

Italy, right. You can always look local, there will be something.

idle dragon
#

Yeah probably

vestal ibex
#

Give me a minute to fire up my vpn and I'll help look

idle dragon
#

There's a proliant octa core Xeon + 128gb ram with 25hdd bays for 180

vestal ibex
#

Not bad, does it take sas?

idle dragon
#

Oh wait... Sff, that's 2.5"

idle dragon
#

Looks like it is supported

vestal ibex
#

Oh wait that has the wrong NIC

idle dragon
#

Btw I'm probably not getting any of these huge beasts atm because I don't have much space and I won't likely need all of that stuff

#

Maybe in the future I'll think about getting one

vestal ibex
#

Fair, but it's still fun to look at and keep in mind for later

idle dragon
#

I don't even have any equipment to set up these things apart from power cables I guess

vestal ibex
#

All you need is power and ethernet

#

And a switch if you don't have enough ports I guess

idle dragon
#

Having 24 drives running likely makes the house sound like an airport

vestal ibex
#

Only when it's turning on

idle dragon
#

Mhmh

#

Btw when a drive makes a double clicking noise every two seconds or so what could it possibly mean?

vestal ibex
#

Could be the read arm going out

idle dragon
#

The only 3.5" HDD connected to the server rn is making that should every once in a while

vestal ibex
#

Or it could be skipping over bad sectors

idle dragon
#

But it sometimes disappears when I restart the pc

idle dragon
vestal ibex
#

You can always run checkdisk and look at the SMART stats. Reallocated sectors count will be there, there's always reserve sectors so if there's only a few it's ok.

idle dragon
#

CDinfo is unable to see the disks connected to my hba

#

Idk why

#

It once showed just one of the SSDs but then it never popped out again

vestal ibex
#

Wow that's the first I've heard of that program failing to get stats

#

When I was testing a bunch of programs it was the only one that picked up my external enclosure properly

idle dragon
#

I never updated my 9240 8i drivers

#

Strange behaviour

#

And I didn't even check if I ever got smart data reading from hwinfo

idle dragon
#

So I watched a bunch of videos on how you can use FileZilla to share folders with password, but every video is about doing it inside of your network, would it be possible for a client to access a specific folder in windows (without additional FZ software) using the server public IP address?
Like when you type \12.34.567.890\folder_name

idle dragon
#

I also installed hard disk sentinel to see smart data from the drives connected to my lsi hba, looks like it's working and it reports 191TB of written data and 1PB of read data

#

This is for one of the 4TB HDDs

#

Powered up just 146 times

#

And a uptime of approximately 490 days

#

That's like 3 times my pc ssd uptime

#

It's fairly low

vestal ibex
#

I recommend setting custom ftp ports and a VERY secure password

idle dragon
# vestal ibex Yes, you'll need to forward your ftp ports on your router but you can absolutely...

So I have to share about 20-25 folders but I guess I can start with just one or two, could you help me do that? And you're 100% sure I can acces them through windows file explorer even tho they're shared with FZ... (The same way as I'd with a normal shared folder on another windows pc)?
I guess the main steps to do all of these are:
-setup FZ
-setup one of the FZ shared folders (with user and PSW too)
-change win firewall settings
-port forwarding on router
Am I right?

#

How much time is it likely to take to share just one folder?

vestal ibex
#

You'll be able to access the shares through a ftp client program, windows explorer, or any browser. You can even map a network drive so it's a link in "this PC" as a regular letter assigned drive. Some programs need that letter.

#

It only takes about 15 minutes to set up filezilla from scratch, create users, assign their permissions, and open up ports.

#

To access the shares from the Internet you'll need to type ftp.[your.ip].com into the address bar

#

Then it'll prompt for a user and pass

idle dragon
#

Good, I'll start in a while and I'll sure ask you for some help brb

idle dragon
#

It's been a long be right back but now I'm here, I'll run FZ server setup and then I'll see what I have to do @vestal ibex

#

Setup done

vestal ibex
idle dragon
#

What's NAT? I've always heard of that but never bothered to look it up

vestal ibex
#

Network Address Translation

idle dragon
#

Ok

vestal ibex
#

Basically, your assigned outgoing ipv4 address is the same for every device on the network. NAT handles figuring out what goes where since all the devices have the same internet address.

#

(this is not an issue that ipv6 addresses have since there's plenty of available ipv6 addresses for everyone to have a unique one)

idle dragon
#

Ohh
So basically a public IP different for each device inside my network

#

That's cool

vestal ibex
#

The public IP gets the traffic to your router, and the router uses NAT to route the packets to the correct devices on the local net.

#

Port forwarding is important to NAT if you're expecting external connections, since it tells the router "hey I'm expecting a packet here, leave the door open and here's where it needs to go"

idle dragon
#

How do I set up a NAT? Just wondering so maybe in the future I'll make use of it

vestal ibex
#

You're already using it if you're using ipv4 at all

#

The router handles everything automatically based on hardware mac addresses

idle dragon
#

Oh wait I'm a bit confused now

vestal ibex
#

For example, a packet can be sent to the internet address 1.2.3.4 destined for a mac address of 1::2::3::4::::
The internet doesn't know what that hardware mac is, but it knows that the router knows so it sends the packet to the router

#

The router receives the packet, decides what to do with it (drop/block or send) and if it sends then it has the table of hardware addresses handy to look up where it goes

#

So the router then knows that 1::2::3::4:::: is a device on the local network with local address of 192.168.0.10

idle dragon
#

Ohh ok, so basically every home network ha a NAT...?

#

https://youtu.be/FTUV0t6JaDA
Power cert videos are just amazing, visual learner here, I often don't get to understand everything just from text descriptions... :-P

What is NAT? This is an animated video tutorial explaining how NAT works (network address translation). What's the difference between a public IP address and private IP address? What's the difference between IPv4 vs IPv6?

►Never forget your passwords again. ►https://bit.ly/3S05wAM (RoboForm affiliate).
RoboForm is my personal password man...

▶ Play video
#

I'll later look for explanations on NAT types since that's interesting too. But I guess I should keep going with the folder setup on fz now

#

On the guide it says I have to tell fz my external IP address (mine is static) but I don't know where

#

Where do I "tell" fz that? @vestal ibex

vestal ibex
#

It's in the passive mode options

#

What it will do is ask that server "what is the address am I sending this from" and the server will respond

last gorge
#

I saw some of the convo above, one other thing I wanted to add is if you are using this for clients in a professional work environment it would be ideal if you setup a transfer server through a domain rather than sending clients your public ip, also can be better for security but that can take a bit of time to setup

vestal ibex
#

Indeed. Setting up a domain would be better for production. I was running on the assumption this was for personal/friend use.
