Dead On Arrival

#

Sometimes it's even perfect coming from the factory but during shipping a truck driver hit the brakes too hard, causing the pallet to shift enough to cause just enough damage to the board to cause a minor issue.

zinc oak
#

So basically he said everyone can get a doa

#

Lmao

#

Buying a pc is like a risk game lolol

#

Too funny

vestal ibex
#

Even buying a prebuilt you get the same risk. Or a phone. Any tech.

#

(arguably even more risk of DOA with prebuilt due to shipping challenges)

zinc oak
#

Welp

#

Hopeless

#

Lmao

#

Just gonna buy a new cable

#

If this don’t fix issue

#

Rip 2 grand pc

#

Down the drain

#

Lololololol

#

Never purchasing these specs again

#

So complicated

balmy grove
#

It won't be down the drain

#

If mobo is really doa, there's always warranty

#

You can rma and wait for them to send a new board back to you

zinc oak
#

lol

dawn socket
#

It's not as bad as it sounds. It sucks, but that's just how it works sometimes.

zinc oak
#

Yeah

#

Yk what

#

I rlly gotta quit being stubborn and impatient

#

To experience the absolute satisfaction of this beast of a pc I need to acquire the virtue of patience

#

And realism

#

Ima just trust the process and the knowledge of these people

#

And go step by step

#

To get this pc running how it’s supposed to

#

Apologies for constant complaints

dawn socket
zinc oak
#

Relatable

#

I waited over 2 weeks for every part to arrive

#

Now it’s been past 2 months

#

And still can’t ACTUALLY use this pc normally

#

Lmao

#

We are targeted individuals I swear

foggy river
#

my network seems to be cutting out every few seconds

#

i don't know why but it's really annoying

#

i dualboot windows and linux, and it doesn't do this on linux

#

it makes playing multiplayer games really annoying because things would just stop happening for a bit

vestal ibex
#

Probably drivers if it's only in windows

#

What motherboard is it? I'll find the latest drivers, not just the ones from the vendor site

foggy river
#

B460M DS3H

vestal ibex
foggy river
#

windows 10

#

alright i'll give it a try in a bit

#

should i try this or download one for RTL8821CE

#

because in device manager its listed as RTL8821CE

foggy river
vestal ibex
#

That would have been good to know from the start lol

vestal ibex
# foggy river is this for ethernet only cus i do wifi
foggy river
#

installing it didn't do anything

vestal ibex
#

As in nothing pops up at all?

foggy river
#

well it does the install and then finishes

#

but nothing changes

#

still doing the thing

#

i even uninstalled the drivers i currently had and installed the new ones from the link you sent

#

nothing

vestal ibex
#

See if the same thing happens when the signal is stronger

foggy river
#

is the signal weak?

vestal ibex
#

I can't really tell just from that graph but it could be

foggy river
#

could it possibly be windows defender?

#

i read something that windows defender does weird networking things sometimes

#

i can also try doing a bios update, i don’t think i’ve updated the bios since i first got the pc

vestal ibex
#

Possibly, it does scan incoming data at least

#

Bios would be a good call

#

It's kinda the backbone of everything

foggy river
#

my dad says it could be something funky with the PCI firmware

#

i’m not sure, it’s super weird that it’s fine in linux though

vestal ibex
#

Linux uses an entirely different driver stack and kernel so it interfaces with the firmware in entirely different ways

foggy river
#

oh i see

#

so it could be a bios firmware issue?

vestal ibex
#

It could be, it's worth updating to try since it doesn't take much effort

foggy river
#

yeah and it’s good to keep it up to date

#

it just scares me a bit cus i don’t wanna brick it but i don’t get power outages so i should be fine

vestal ibex
#

Eh, honestly with bios I usually don't update unless I need to because of an issue or if I need a new feature.

#

Same with GPU drivers.

foggy river
#

i’ve heard it’s good practice to update the bios often but i kinda agree with you

#

if it works it works yk

#

on linux there’s no automatic updates for gpu drivers either

#

so i don’t really prioritize being on the latest version cus it’s a hassle

vestal ibex
#

If you're on a newer platform absolutely update the bios every 6 months or so at least for the stability updates, but on mature platforms like yours that's much less of a problem.

foggy river
#

what counts as a mature platform?

#

i don’t think i’ve heard that term before

vestal ibex
#

It's a rather general term. In this case your CPU and memory standard are fairly old (by computing standards) so they wouldn't suffer from too many issues.

foggy river
#

ah i see

#

yeah i got the pc a while ago and it’s been holding up pretty nicely since

#

oh yeah i forgot to mention

#

a week ago i did try to change the band of my network driver or something

#

i forgot the number, 802 something, but i changed it from auto to 802 “a”

#

i think that’s a 2.4 ghz band?

vestal ibex
#

That's the slowest possible speed

#

802.11a

foggy river
#

it actually made the stutters less frequent

#

but it came at a cost of having horrible download speeds

vestal ibex
#

Reducing the transmission rate of packets would make it more stable lol

foggy river
#

lol

#

yeah it wasn’t a good fix though

#

cus it made everything stable but slow

#

i’ll try the bios update soon

#

i’ve never updated my bios before so i’m not really sure how to do it, i assume there’s an option in my bios menu

vestal ibex
#

You'll need to download the latest version from the motherboard support site and extract it to a usb drive

foggy river
#

oh nice

foggy river
#

seems to be missing from the file name of the zip you sent

vestal ibex
#

Nothing important in this case

foggy river
#

i see

#

other than that it looks like it matches my motherboard so i’ll try it

vestal ibex
#

Sometimes gigabyte will have different board revisions with slightly different features, requiring a different bios, but not in this case

foggy river
#

ah i see

#

my dad also said that to him, it looks like windows is trying to send more packets than the network card can handle

#

he suggested i compare network settings between linux and windows

#

hopefully one of these fixes will fix it because if they don’t then idk

vestal ibex
foggy river
#

oh interesting

vestal ibex
#

And it looks like the max theoretical transmit/receive rate on your card is 433Mbps

foggy river
#

i’ve never seen it go that high before

vestal ibex
#

That's assuming ideal conditions, like 2 feet away from the router conditions lol

foggy river
#

yeah that makes sense lol

#

idk what this means

#

turns out the v2-y1 matters

#

ok i updated it, bios menu looks so different now lol

foggy river
#

it didnt fix anything

vestal ibex
#

Dang

#

You can always try resetting the network stack, sometimes that helps

#

In an admin command prompt,

Type *ipconfig /release* and press Enter.
Type *ipconfig /flushdns* and press Enter.
Type *ipconfig /renew* and press Enter. (This will stall for a moment.)
Type *netsh int ip reset* and press Enter. (Don’t restart yet.)
Type *netsh winsock reset* and press Enter.

Then reboot

foggy river
#

actually i think i fixed it

#

for some reason the bios update installed some GIGABYTE APP center

#

and installing the wifi drivers through there seemed to fix it

#

now it doesn’t cut out

foggy river
#

that graph makes me so happy

light trail
#

hey guys, im having this issue where my laptop when connected to hdmi with a display, does not use nvidia; it uses intel graphics and im not able to play games

vestal ibex
#

Disable your iGPU in bios

light trail
#

how

vestal ibex
#

It'll slightly hurt battery life but it'll make sure you're using the dGPU

#

Every brand has a different bios, what model do you have?

light trail
#

lenovo ideapad 320e

#

its discontinued for now but it was ahead of its time

#

it had a really nice pricepoint

#

@vestal ibex

balmy grove
#

That laptop can't force dgpu to output to hdmi

#

So nah, no dice

vestal ibex
#

Looks like it's the typical ultra-restricted Lenovo bios sadly. You can try setting the nvidia settings so it defaults to the high performance GPU.

#

But it's entirely possible that it just won't work like foxy said

light trail
#

@vestal ibex @balmy grove i have recorded a vid, want to have a look?

vestal ibex
#

That doesn't work too well for me on mobile

light trail
#

frend me

vestal ibex
#

I don't usually do that but my DMs are open

#

It won't load videos for me though

light trail
#

i am not able to send msg to you

#

so you gotta frend me just for a sec

vestal ibex
#

Might be because of the anti spam filter on discord

light trail
#

whats that?

vestal ibex
light trail
#

oh hell yeah once my account got infected, and started to send fake nitro messages automatically

#

it was like last year

#

is there any channel where i can send the vid

vestal ibex
#

You can try here

light trail
#

you saw that

vestal ibex
#

It still doesn't load like I said

light trail
#

lol

#

its 2 megabytes

#

which phone do you have btw

vestal ibex
#

Yeah and it doesn't even embed because it's mp4 so it wants to download, but it freaks out when I try to download anything on discord

light trail
#

lol

#

imma record avi just a sec

vestal ibex
#

Pixel 6 but I think it's a discord issue, like so many others

#

Embeds don't load either

light trail
#

ya

#

pixel 6 is new

#

like kinda new

#

so the phones dope

#

its discord causing the trouble

#

lets see if this loads

#

@vestal ibex

vestal ibex
#

Download failed

light trail
#

lmao

#

i really wanted to play on a big display

balmy grove
#

I have this same situation with my laptop when I was taking it for a spin with a tv

#

The dgpu wouldn't get used

light trail
#

sad 😦

#

so i need to use the laptop display only

#

right?

#

@balmy grove

#

the hdmi faces frame drops

balmy grove
#

Yes

light trail
#

ok, thanks a ton!

windows defender keeps crashing what could be the issue?

vestal ibex
somber berry
#

@vestal ibex sorry to brother you again but could you help me again? i freshly instale Windows and updated all the systems and im installing the mobo drivers but it just blue screens and theres no code or it restarts way too fast to see the code

#

and my browser tabs keep hanging up for some reason

#

now it's freezing like crazy and crashing

vestal ibex
somber berry
vestal ibex
#

That error is a generic hardware error so it could be anything

somber berry
#

guess ill find out eventually

vestal ibex
# somber berry guess ill find out eventually

It may be a generic error but in my experience it's often something CPU related, whether that's the CPU itself, the pins are bent, or the motherboard. It still could be anything, even a misbehaving GPU I've seen trigger it.

somber berry
cinder mauve
zenith vigil
#

Got multiple blue screens

#

HELP😭

vestal ibex
#

There's a repair script in the pins you can try

#

If that doesn't fix it then DM me the contents of C:/Windows/Minidump and I'll analyze the crashes

zenith vigil
#

I’ll do my best it’s crashing and it’s not responding quickly

vestal ibex
#

You can try loading into safe mode, if it's caused by a driver that'll prevent crashing

#

That'll also help narrow down the problem. If it crashes in safe mode it's probably hardware.

zenith vigil
#

The dual screen isn’t working, might be the GPU?

vestal ibex
#

Or the GPU driver

#

Did you try safe mode

somber berry
#

could i get any help? i wanna use my wifi card and im trying to install the drivers rn but opening the asussetup dosent do anything

zenith vigil
#

My system isn’t connecting to the WiFi anymore

somber berry
#

wait nvm

#

i just checked wifi settings

vestal ibex
#

You can bypass the installer by going into device manager and telling the wifi card to update, pointing it at this folder

somber berry
vestal ibex
#

In file explorer

#

Go to C:/Windows

#

Copy the Minidump folder to the desktop

#

Right click the new folder on the desktop, and add it to a zip

#

And send the zip

zenith vigil
vestal ibex
#

Starting analysis

#

Ok those are all pointing straight at the kernel, so it's one of 3 things. Windows is corrupted, the drive is bad, or the memory is bad and presenting as a kernel issue.

zenith vigil
#

kernal?

vestal ibex
zenith vigil
#

how would i identify it?

#

what seps can itake?

#

i updated the bios earlier than the problem occured

vestal ibex
#

Install windows to another drive if you can, that'll narrow it down

#

If it still crashes on a different drive, it's hardware

#

If it doesn't crash, it's windows or the drive

zenith vigil
#

It worked when I Manuel booted from the boot drive but now I’m in safe mode, what option would I choose?

zenith vigil
vestal ibex
#

So it's crashing in safe mode?

#

That would indicate a probable hardware issue, either the drive or something else like memory

zenith vigil
vestal ibex
#

All you can really do is start swapping parts

#

Start with the drive and memory

zenith vigil
#

I don’t have extra parts

vestal ibex
#

Ask a friend to borrow theirs for testing, or start sending in parts for RMA to get replacements until you find the right one

zenith vigil
#

Alright

#

Would affect the the second display not working and not detecting it. It work for a quick minute

vestal ibex
#

It could affect that

zenith vigil
#

Trying to run Scanhealth

#

And crashed

vestal ibex
#

Chkdsk only tells you if there was bad sectors and if they contained data, or if there's "lost" files. Very specific types of failures.

zenith vigil
#

Alright, I’ll start swapping parts, I’m taking a break from this for now

bitter salmon
#

Hmm does anyone know why I'm unable to use the end task feature that allows you to end tasks through the taskbar in the latest canary preview? it seems like it's no longer exists in the latest canary preview and even if I enable it via ViVeTool it won't do anything

balmy grove
#

It's windows insider for ya

#

Features gets removed and added

spring glen
#

Hey is there anyone that could possibly help with a driver issue im having. I have an Aorus GC-WBAX210 wifi card that has bluetooth capabilities. I was able to use it once on my tower but it randomly disabled itself. In the process of trying to re-enable it I ended up deleting it directly from my device manager never to be seen again. I have tried reinstalling the drivers from both the manufacturer and Intel and it still will not appear in my device manager. I also want to add that I fully reset my tower to see if the bluetooth drivers would reinstall themselves as well

vestal ibex
#

And what do you mean by a full reset? What method did you use?

spring glen
#

I used that website and Aorus's website to download the driver. As for the full reset I did a complete factory reset through windows where it asks if I want to keep my files or complete remove everything. I chose to remove everything

#

I do want to add that through my Control panel the software for Bluetooth is in my system

spring glen
vestal ibex
#

That was actually going to be my next suggestion lol. It works because that forces the system to re-address the card and effectively forces it to install it like new.

tall shoal
#

Is it ok to replace shut down with sleep on a computer? I’m doing rn so I can keep some programs on when I come back to it but idk if it will affect anything long term

vestal ibex
#

Sure, you can still shut down when you need to

#

If you get weird behavior reboot and see if it fixes it

somber berry
#

can someone help me? i can't connect to any wifi networks Even tho i plugged in my pc's motherboard antenna and i have the drivers for it too
it only connected to mh phone's data

somber berry
# arctic verge Your network ssid hidden?

nah it was a stupid fix, i had the wrong password because i forgot we changed it, but windows just proceeded to connect and say error instead of wrong password lol

Everything should be thought controlled by that era smh

zenith vigil
#

Need help, my PC is running dual monitors and the second screen won’t display, detecting no internet connection, when it’s connected to Ethernet. And NZXT Cam not detecting GPU. I changed it to another PCI slot and it worked temporarily. Then it’s back on its BS again.

#

I updated the bios before these problems occurred.

#

Would a improper installation on BIO update cause an issue?

vestal ibex
#

If the bios update was that badly damaged it probably wouldn't boot at all. That's either Windows acting up or the motherboard itself, much more likely Windows.

zenith vigil
#

If I. Do a reset on the bios or down grade to the previous bio update would it work?

zenith vigil
arctic verge
zenith vigil
arctic verge
#

oh did this problem happen only after the bios update?

zenith vigil
#

yeah

#

like it's working now, but it creashed again with no code then it didnt detect the gpu nor the internet. not sure if what is malfunctioning so far

#

to scared to restart my PC again lol

arctic verge
#

i mean

#

you should, and if it does have problems, then we know it probably isn't the bios

#

and if it doesn't then it probably was the bios update causing problems

zenith vigil
#

you right

#

Got this code

#

Then the NZXT cam doesn’t detect and the second doesn’t appear

#

When I restart it again

arctic verge
#

yeah i'd reccommend reinstalling windows to see if that fixes it

zenith vigil
#

I went to the bios and boot it up and it works again

#

I have to reset again

zenith vigil
#

restarted twice and no issue yet

#

Got a code

#

😭

arctic verge
#

have you reinstalled windows yet

zenith vigil
#

I got blue screen try to do it

#

Would I reinstall into the same drive or get a new one?

vestal ibex
#

Do the same drive if you can. If you still have issues then try a new drive. If you still have issues then it's something deeper, like bad memory or motherboard.

zenith vigil
#

ok

#

im doing the media creation tool reinstall

#

unless im doing it wrong

vestal ibex
#

That's fine

zenith vigil
#

cool

#

installation failed

vestal ibex
#

It's sounding like bad memory to me

zenith vigil
#

ram? or drive?

vestal ibex
#

ram

zenith vigil
#

Damn I had a ram issue before

#

I’ll go get a new set

vestal ibex
#

I'd try running Linux off a USB first and if it fails too you know it's a hardware issue

zinc oak
#

Bro it’s still happening

#

Ethernet cable plugged in correctly to

#

Drivers updated to

arctic verge
#

did you check your ipv4 settings

#

your adapter settings

#

make sure that both are set to obtain it automatically

or set it manually if you know what ip is free and such idk

#

also make sure your router is working properly, as well as the dhcp server

#

might as well restart the router

#

i'm assuming you're at home, so chances are your dhcp server is on the router

zinc oak
#

Been set to that

#

Restarted router and stuff multiple times

#

The issue still occurs

#

It’s like whenever I’m running a game or a program for a while it randomly disconnects me from Ethernet

#

And tells me those two issues

#

And I’m Forced to restart pc

#

I’m tryna make this issue permanently disappear

arctic verge
#

hmm

#

try reinstalling your network adapter drivers

vestal ibex
#

Well if you want it to permanently disappear there's always add in cards or USB to Ethernet

#

Guessing that new cable didn't fix things

#

So it's probably a bad port

arctic verge
#

oh driver reinstall has been attempted it seems
yeah possibly a bad port, or even controller

#

though if it only starts having issues after a little while of using it, it probably is a bad controller?

vestal ibex
#

Yep this has been a problem for a while now

#

It could be the controller or the port, either way it either needs an add in card/USB or a RMA.

#

It's low profile so it won't block your GPU too

zinc oak
#

was thinking of just buying a wifi card

#

smh

#

ethernet cables always having issues

zinc oak
#

restarted, reinstalled, reupdated

#

everything

#

and it STILL goes on

arctic verge
#

a physical connection, assuming that it's actually working properly, will generally be more stable than a wireless connection

vestal ibex
#

100% yes, I always do wired if possible

#

Unless wireless would be significantly faster than wired

arctic verge
#

honestly it's rather rare for me to see issues with ethernet like this lmao

#

usually the port is completely dead, or working perfectly fine

zinc oak
#

It’s a wired connection

#

The modem is connected to the wall and the router is connected to the modem and the Ethernet cable connects from the pc to the router

#

I can use the internet and stuff but after a while on running applications it randomly disconnects

vestal ibex
#

I'd go with the add in card personally. You usually have to pay to ship a bad board in for RMA, then you wait 3-6 weeks for them to maybe fix it (and maybe break something else).

#

Better to spend the $15 on a quicker solution imo

#

Since shipping would be almost that much anyway

zinc oak
#

Alr

#

So is the 15$ thing u posted the Wi-Fi card?

#

Or is that something completely different

vestal ibex
#

It's ethernet

#

It plugs into one of your other PCIe slots

zinc oak
#

So I need to get both that and the Wi-Fi card?

vestal ibex
#

No wifi needed

zinc oak
#

Ik Wi-Fi cards aren’t that pricy too

#

Oh

#

Ok

#

Because before the entire build started they said I had to either buy a Wi-Fi card because my motherboard didn’t come with one

#

Or connect a Ethernet cable

#

So I went with a cable

#

Because I have Ethernet internet

vestal ibex
#

You could get wifi too if you wanted but good ones start at around $22 and that's not including antennas

#

$30 with antennas

zinc oak
#

Wi-Fi cards have antennas?

vestal ibex
#

Everything wireless must have an antenna

zinc oak
#

Wtf

#

Lmao

#

Ok

vestal ibex
#

Even if you can't see it, your phone has several

zinc oak
#

Might just get the 15$ thing u sent

#

Since u said I don’t need a Wi-Fi card

#

So just buy that, and connect it to my router or my pc

vestal ibex
#

It slots into a PCIe slot, similar to the GPU, and then you'll plug the router into that with ethernet

zinc oak
#

Wait what

#

So

#

It connects to the pc?

#

One end to the pc

#

The other end to where

#

The router?

vestal ibex
#

Basically yes

zinc oak
#

I’ll just search up a tut

#

Or some

#

Thanks tho

vestal ibex
#

Once it's in you just plug the ethernet cable into the back like you would on the motherboard

elder cliff
#

everytime i boot my pc i get green lines and the screen is just grey, i can see the boot screen but the windows screen is just grey

#

how do i fix this?

arctic verge
#

Change cables

elder cliff
#

i did

#

7 times ☠️

#

its the same thing

#

i get to the gigabyte screen

#

then i hear the windows boot sound

#

but it grey

#

before this i would always have a weird caution sign on my gpu in device manager

arctic verge
#

Hmm

#

Might be driver issues?

#

What does it look like exactly

vestal ibex
#

If the bios splash is off color, that's not a driver issue, that's hardware (or firmware). If it's just windows, probably a driver.

somber berry
#

does anyone know how to fix the bt audio output?, whenever i reconnect my earbuds to my pc the audio from some apps/games/etc cant be heard and i have to restart them and its pretty annoying when i wanna charge my earbuds and have them reconnect later on

elder cliff
#

the only 2 screens i get are the gigabyte and the windows error

#

and they both have green lines and blue lines

vestal ibex
elder cliff
#

i’ve used different screens and cables

#

and ive used several gpu ports

#

i also cant update my graphics and my bios is outdated too

somber berry
#

so i got a bigger problem, i started my pc like normal and i noticed the bluetooth was off, i went to windows settings and the button to turn it on isnt there anymore, i went to device manager and bluetooth isnt there either, i installed my motherboard drivers but it didnt do anything and i think windows dosent detect my bluetooth motherboard hardware but idk what to do to reset it/enable it back again

arctic verge
#

Bluetooth drivers are usually included with the network card drivers

#

Unless the Bluetooth chip is separate from the network chip

somber berry
#

and the bt option dissapeared from here too

arctic verge
#

Just try reinstalling your WLAN drivers

somber berry
#

i just fixed it

#

it was stupid as hell

#

there was some USB adapter that had an error and i restarted it to see what was it and when i enabled it it worked and it was the bluetooth bruh

#

one of these bruh

#

thanks for the help tho

arctic verge
#

Ah

#

Yeah Bluetooth is connected to usb as well

somber berry
#

at least it wasnt hardware related, i got scared that the bt chipset was damaged somehow

arctic verge
#

Windows update sometimes breaks bt drivers for some reason

somber berry
#

the thing is i didnt even update anything

#

i just started my computer and bt was not working

arctic verge
#

Or maybe it was just an edge case scenario idk, but once my bt drivers broke after a windows update

💀

somber berry

i tried updating after the issue bc i had a pending update and thought that would fix it

#

but it didnt

vestal ibex
arctic verge
#

We love Bluetooth on windows

somber berry
#

do u guys have any tips on how to stop it? it keeps happening

#

it even disabled my headset and my mouse for some reason

#

and it didnt fix with the usb restarting this time

somber berry
#

this is the error usb and appearntly its related to my antivirus software but idk what i can do to fix it

arctic verge
#

Have you tried reinstalling your wifi chipset drivers yet

somber berry
#

not really

#

i dont know if they'll affect cuz each one has its own driver

#

but ill give it a try

vestal ibex
#

Yes

Every time a game installs it'll check for and install one of those packages. That's how you get so many duplicates.

Although it looks like you miraculously only have one duplicate

brittle heart

i see

#

anyways thanks for the help :)))

vestal ibex

No problem

languid plank

you could do the "Install all dependencies" thing

vestal ibex
#

And game installers always have outdated versions on top of that

#

Aahh

wary mica
#

So a bit ago a friend and known person here helped me get windows 11 on my “unsupported” MSi laptop. Everything works fine, except no matter what I try I can not restart the laptop with the restart button. It says restarting, then then when booting it’s just stuck at the MSi splash screen and I have to press the physical power button off and off again to boot. Only way I can restart is to shut down and turn on again (which is the worst way). Is there any fix to this?

balmy grove
#

I honestly have no answers to this, but it could be that the install itself is corrupted somehow

wary mica
#

If its corrupted thats really, oddly specific of a corruption

#

Like it doesnt affect regular startup and shutdown only the restart lol

#

also random but why do i have 3 different speakers in my audio settings and two different microphones...i know with the mics one of them is probably my headset and the other is laptop but idk which is which

balmy grove
#

That's also weird

eager tartan
#

anyone heard of atlas OS ?

#

do you know of tools that do similar functions without the reinstall part

wary mica
#

Also your banner is heckin adorable

balmy grove
#

Outside of coping with it or trying for a reinstall?

#

Nah, not that I know of

#

It could also simply be some drivers missing somehow

vestal ibex
#

The multiple audio devices are for the multiple audio outputs. There's your internal speaker, headphone jack, and the hdmi/dp port.

balmy grove
#

That's right, problem is without audio driver the laptop came with it would list everything as speakers kekw

#

Not an issue, just confusing

vestal ibex
#

Considering it's not officially supported some driver hiccups are expected

balmy grove
#

ya

#

I have my wifi dropping sometimes on win 11

#

Some boots just fails to recognize the wifi card

I'm on latest drivers too

vestal ibex

vestal ibex
#

Dang, worth a try lol

balmy grove
#

Not bothered anyway lol

#

This laptop is being given to my bro

#

This evening I'm picking up a new one

#

If it does that again I can tell him to restart

#

He gets to use a laptop than can properly play games he wants to, not all of them but a good number of them. And I get to hop to 4050 laptop stonks1

There's a "search and destroy" mode in Revo. Point it at any running program.

quick question does anyone know how i can add back the bluetooth icon? i accidentally removed it from the hidden process

vestal ibex

I usually just get to it from the quick settings anyway, where the network icon is

I don't have bluetooth so I'm not sure if it appears in a different place but check taskbar settings -> taskbar items. or the other system tray icons

i cant find it lol

vestal ibex

Right click an empty spot in the task bar

agile merlin
#

is there any way to fix this lmao

#

my pagefile is using 47 gb of storage

vestal ibex
#

How much ram do you have

#

Also you can kill the hiberfil by running an admin terminal and doing powercfg -h off and then delete the file

#

Windows hibernation causes more problems than it's worth imo

agile merlin
#

ive been using hibernation a lot actually, its better than sleep which barely works since i switched to an amd cpu

agile merlin
vestal ibex
#

Did you reinstall windows when you switched to amd

agile merlin
#

nah

#

youre supposed to?

vestal ibex
#

You should yes

#

The old Intel files will conflict with the new ones

agile merlin
#

damn, ive got a lot of stuff though

vestal ibex
#

You can do a PC reset and tell it to keep all files

agile merlin
#

if it keeps the files whats it changing?

#

drivers?

vestal ibex
#

That would be the cause of sleep issues

#

It moves the old windows installation folder and some system app data folders into a windows.old folder, then installs fresh

#

It's like a new pc at that point but with all your data intact. So you might need to reinstall your programs but the data will still be there, no need to re-download steam games for example.

agile merlin
#

oh gotcha, i gotta try that then

#

oh wait but is there any way to limit the size of the pagefile btw?

vestal ibex
#

Yep I was putting a screenshot together for you

agile merlin
#

oh thanks!

vestal ibex
#

Right click the windows button, hit system. Advanced system settings.

#

Here's what I'd do, you can adjust as needed

agile merlin
#

is it safe to modify?

vestal ibex
#

Make sure to hit "set" before you hit OK!

#

Yes totally safe. It'll tell you to reboot.

#

You have more than enough memory so it doesn't need as much virtual space.

agile merlin
#

gotcha

#

any idea why it got so large?

#

isnt it supposed to change with how much is needed? im not doign anuthing intensive rn

vestal ibex
#

The issue with the page file is Windows used to recommend having that set to your memory size x 1.5

#

That recommendation hasn't been needed since about the XP days though

#

Sometimes it'll still revert to that size for whatever buggy reason

agile merlin
#

lmao i see

#

so the settigns you posted should be enough for 32gb?

vestal ibex
#

More than enough. That'll tell it to allocate 2GB by default, and expand up to almost 8GB if needed which is unlikely.

agile merlin
#

perfect

vestal ibex
#

It needs at least 800MB minimum just in case of a system error, so it can safely do a memory dump and error report.

agile merlin
#

my computer is using 16gb ram at idle lmao

#

i have 32gb rn

#

when i was on 16gb my computer never used half on idle, is there any way to fix it?

#

resource monitor shows that nothing in particular is using that much, just the combination of everything

vestal ibex

Here's a question for yall - when I try to click share on a document in word, it tries sending the email through Office 2016. Is there any way you know of to change that default app to my mail app? I use Microsoft's Mail and Calander app from the Microsoft Store.

vestal ibex

That'll depend on the way it's trying to share. If it's a mailto link that's easy.

cosmic siren
wooden flint

Do you have another computer you can use?

#
  • a usb stick?
cosmic siren
#

Laptop??

wooden flint
#

as long as it’s not the infected computer it will work

#

plug a usb stick into the laptop

cosmic siren
#

It’s not infected no

wooden flint
#

install Rufus, latest version

cosmic siren
#

Hold up booting laptop

wooden flint
#

okay

cosmic siren
#

Mb it’s so slow

wooden flint
#

guessing it’s an old computer ey?

cosmic siren
#

Nah but it’s just ran a lot of games that are way out of its league

wooden flint
#

okay, just ping me when you’ve installed Rufus

cosmic siren
wooden flint
cosmic siren
#

This is how I got the virus in first place 😂😂 my brother clicked a fake download link and installed that mf

wooden flint
#

well, might be a good idea to teach your bro computer skills

cosmic siren
#

I don’t let him on it

#

And I wasn’t home etc

#

Ok I have the Rufus

#

Put it on the USB stick?

wooden flint
#

Not just yet

#

Download the file that ends in .iso

cosmic siren
#

Didn’t you say that will like make the ssd useless

#

Or is that what the Rufus is for

wooden flint
#

No, Rufus is something you use to put the file on the usb stick

#

the DBan file will help you completely wipe your hard drive

#

which is what you want

cosmic siren
#

Just to know is it dban-2.3.0_i586.iso

wooden flint
#

yes

#

okay now go back to Rufus and start it up

cosmic siren
#

Maybe it was someone else that didn’t know but if I completely erase everything even windows how do I get it back

#

Sorry if that is a dumb question

wooden flint
#

well you said you backed up all your important files

#

you should be fine as long as you follow my steps

cosmic siren
#

Ok do I let the Rufus change my device

wooden flint
#

You’re in Rufus right?

First you want to click on the button that says browse next to .iso file, and click on the dban file you just downloaded

cosmic siren
#

No but like do I allow the Rufus to make changes to my device

wooden flint
#

Oh, yeah give it admin privileges

#

thought you already did that

#

Okay so now click on the button that says “browse” and find the dban file

wooden flint
#

yeah the select button

#

thought it was browse for some reason

cosmic siren
#

Ok done

wooden flint
#

show me a picture of Rufus

cosmic siren
wooden flint
#

hopefully you selected the dban file but I just want to see if it shows up with extra settings

#

okay there we go, click start

cosmic siren
#

Ok done

wooden flint
#

shouldn’t take too long

cosmic siren
#

It says it’s ready

wooden flint
#

okay now take your usb stick out and plug it into the infected computer

cosmic siren
#

Well he is now healthy but got some corrupted

#

Files but I’m assuming that’s the same thing

wooden flint
#

just want to make sure: the computer you installed Rufus on is not the same one as the computer your bro messed up right?

#

just want to clear up a misconception that I had

cosmic siren
#

Yes installed on the laptop and the virus was on the desktop

#

That makes a big difference?

wooden flint
#

okay good

#

so plug that usb stick in your desktop that’s infected

#

start up your desktop and just hit all of the F keys on your keyboard

#

You know, like F12, F4

cosmic siren
#

It’s already on so ok

wooden flint
#

well if it’s already on turn it off and turn it back on

cosmic siren
#

Wait wat does that so

wooden flint
#

Once you turn on your pc press all of the F keys

#

we need to get into BIOS boot menu

cosmic siren
#

I took out the stick and I put it in once in bios?

wooden flint
#

No, leave it in and then go into bios menu

#

if you put it in after you go into bios menu it won’t show up

cosmic siren
#

Shi I took it out

#

My pc is off.. if I put it in then turn it on does that work

wooden flint
#

Yes

#

tell me once you’ve gotten into boot menu (not your windows Lock Screen)

cosmic siren
#

And also

#

You need to bear with me bc my pc takes some trial and error to boot occasionally

wooden flint
cosmic siren
#

Ok

wooden flint
#

It varies with every computer manufacturer

cosmic siren
#

Feck it went to Lock Screen and didn’t even wait

wooden flint
#

if it doesn’t work you may need to tell me what manufacturer made your motherboard/pc

cosmic siren
#

What doesn’t work

#

ROG

wooden flint
#

Okay rog? Let me find out which button it is real quick

cosmic siren
#

I’m in bios

#

Don’t worry

#

It’s del and f2

wooden flint
#

yeah one of those keys should get you into boot menu

cosmic siren
#

Ok I’m there

wooden flint
#

okay you mind sending a picture? describing it is hard

cosmic siren
wooden flint
#

Okay, so the button you pressed to get into BIOS isn’t the right one to get into boot menu

#

now try the other button when booting up

cosmic siren
#

That’s not the right one?

wooden flint
#

yeah you said there’s two buttons right? we needed to get into boot menu

cosmic siren
#

Oh is it that blue screen thing

wooden flint
#

the one you pressed was for bios

cosmic siren
#

With the repairs

wooden flint
#

no not that thing

cosmic siren
#

Is this the right place or no

wooden flint
#

no

#

try hitting f2 key when starting up

cosmic siren
#

Ok I’m gonna press the other one

wooden flint
#

that should work

cosmic siren
#

I know we aren’t done yet but holy shi thanks for all the help man

wooden flint
#

I’ve got plenty of time to help you

#

in fact you’re doing me a favor because I have nothing to do

cosmic siren
#

Esc didn’t work

#

I’ll try f2

wooden flint
#

try f2 this time

cosmic siren
#

Same thing

wooden flint
#

okay y’know what? Try going to the boot section

#

maybe that’s what we need

#

never used an ROG Mobo, excuse my lack of intelligence here

cosmic siren
#

I think it is

wooden flint
#

click on your usb in boot override

#

maybe that should do the trick

cosmic siren
#

I did it flickered and brought it back to the same screen

wooden flint
#

odd

#

Maybe set the usb stick above windows in boot priorities

cosmic siren
#

I did but is something supposed to happen

wooden flint
#

okay i think we both made one crucial mistake

#

you need to take the usb stick out and put it back in your laptop, then start Rufus again

#

select the dban file like you did last time but this time, change one of the settings

#

this setting should be set to “MBR”, change that to “UEFI”

cosmic siren
#

Wait

#

Should I erase the preexisting DBAN that is already on my stick

wooden flint
#

Yes

#

once it’s done, let’s try doing the boot override thing on your desktop again

cosmic siren
#

Woah

wooden flint
#

Did it work?

cosmic siren
#

Where it says MBR I cannot change it to anything else

#

No UEFI

wooden flint
#

Okay it may be because one of the settings is set to FAT32

cosmic siren
#

NTFS?

wooden flint
#

Change it to NTFS

cosmic siren
#

Still only MBR

wooden flint
#

see if it works

cosmic siren
#

without UEFI?

wooden flint
#

hmm

cosmic siren
#

Well I clicked start and it said smth abt how it already had an iso or some

wooden flint
#

Alright show me a pic of Rufus

#

maybe I can try seeing what’s up here

cosmic siren
wooden flint
# cosmic siren

so you can’t select GPT? Odd. Maybe see what’s under “target system” and “file system”

cosmic siren
#

GPT?

#

That’s the only option for target system and the only other option for the file system is the Fats32

wooden flint
#

okay see if you can select the gpt partition scheme in either file system

cosmic siren
#

No

#

This was some of the of the other menus

wooden flint
#

hmm

#

alright let’s break out the big guns

#

go to windows search bar and type “command prompt”, but don’t hit enter

Instead go to the right and click “run as administrator”

cosmic siren
#

This my moms laptop so before I do this what does it do

#

On the infected pc or the laptop

wooden flint
#

On laptop. This is a last ditch effort to convert to gpt

#

You got the command prompt up yet?

cosmic siren
#

Run as admin

#

?

wooden flint
#

Yes

cosmic siren
#

Ok done

wooden flint
#

Type in “diskpart”

cosmic siren
#

Any spaces or no

wooden flint
#

No spaces

cosmic siren
#

No like between the windows system

#

Is it a separate line

wooden flint
#

no not a separate line

#

just the same line, like a phrase

“diskpart”

cosmic siren
#

Then it did DISKPART>

#

Part

wooden flint
#

okay good

#

type in “list disk”

#

then take a picture

cosmic siren
wooden flint
#

you misspelled disk in list disk

#

did that my first time too

#

type it in again and take another pic

cosmic siren
wooden flint
#

okay good

#

type in

“select disk 1”

cosmic siren
#

Ok

wooden flint
#

you got it?

cosmic siren
#

Yes

wooden flint
#

now type in

“clean”

cosmic siren
#

That’s the flash not the drive of the laptop?

#

Just asking before I erase my moms shi

wooden flint
#

yes it’s not the laptop

#

your laptop isn’t 28 GB kekw

cosmic siren
#

I like to be sure before I make a mistake that would put my butt on a wall

wooden flint
#

good thing you’re asking questions and making sure

cosmic siren
#

Ok it’s clean

wooden flint
#

once it’s done, type this:

“convert gpt”

cosmic siren
#

Ok done

wooden flint
#

You can close the command prompt now, and start Rufus back up

cosmic siren
#

Ok

wooden flint
#

Do everything like you did before and take a picture

cosmic siren
#

Bro wtf

#

Before I selected DBAN it was gpt but once I put it on it went back to MBR

wooden flint
#

Try setting it to gpt

cosmic siren
#

No option to

wooden flint
#

Looks like this is the time to throw Rufus in the trash can and try something else

cosmic siren
#

Wait

#

Do I select one of these b4 putting in the iso

wooden flint
#

no

#

it wouldn’t make a difference

cosmic siren
#

Y it gotta be like that

wooden flint
#

Rufus sometimes messes up once in a while

#

It’s a good program but once in a blue moon it doesn’t work

#

Ventoy is an open source tool to create bootable USB drive for ISO files. With ventoy, you don't need to format the disk again and again, you just need to copy the iso file to the USB drive and boot it.

#

This is what I personally use, and they have a windows version. Try this

cosmic siren
#

The windows zip

wooden flint
#

yes

#

extract it and then click the ventoy2disk exe

cosmic siren
#

Sorry but when I click on it it shows the “releases” but on the download

#

Nevermind

wooden flint
#

Scroll down and click on the windows file

#

extract the windows file and run the exe file

cosmic siren
cosmic siren
wooden flint
#

Click install

cosmic siren
#

Done

wooden flint
#

Oh wait shoot hold on

#

Go back to ventoy

#

click options, change the partition style

#

it’s set to MBR by default and it needs to be set to GPT

cosmic siren
#

Fresh install ventoy?

wooden flint
#

Yes

cosmic siren
#

Ok

wooden flint
#

Done?

cosmic siren
#

Ye

wooden flint
#

Copy the dban file to your usb drive

cosmic siren
#

Done

wooden flint
#

should be a ventoy partition now

cosmic siren
#

What does that mean

wooden flint
#

it means it’ll work now

#

tell me when the dban file is done copying to your usb stick

cosmic siren
#

Ok so pull out stick and put in off pc

cosmic siren
#

Thank you

wooden flint
#

Done? Ok

Now stick it in your desktop. Start it up and go to the bios boot screen like last time

cosmic siren
#

Then?

wooden flint
#

Go to boot override and click on your usb stick

cosmic siren
#

Partition 1 or 2

#

There are 2

wooden flint
#

Hmm

#

Try partition 1 first

cosmic siren
#

2 worked

wooden flint
#

Pic?

cosmic siren
#

This were I need to be

wooden flint
#

Click on that

#

That’s what we need

cosmic siren
#

My mouse cursor isn’t showing up

wooden flint
#

Hit enter

#

Maybe that works

cosmic siren
#

No

#

Sadly

#

Any of the options on the bottom?

wooden flint
#

Space?

cosmic siren
#

Nope

wooden flint
#

If not then hit F1, maybe that’ll tell us what key it is

cosmic siren
#

It seems like any key I press it doesn’t work

#

Like it’s frozen

wooden flint
#

Hm

#

Odd

#

Not any of the other F keys work?

cosmic siren
#

Nope

#

Restart pc?

wooden flint
#

Try it again

#

maybe it will work again?

#

I need to work on something, it’ll take about 20 min

cosmic siren
#

Ok

#

Wait

cosmic siren
wooden flint
#

Normal boot

#

Do that

cosmic siren
