obtuse adder
#

The i5 11th gen doesn't have pins.

quick rose

wat

obtuse adder
#

Yeah.

quick rose
#

wat

#

no

#

No

#

No

#

no

#

XD

tall pelican
#

what pins?

#

1200 pins?

quick rose
#

Intel sockets have pins

#

The CPU's do not

#

Since forever now

#

Since socket 478 I think?

#

Anyway, the socket on Z series is no different from B series

obtuse adder
#

Wait a minute.

quick rose
#

However, Z series boards allow CPU overclocking where the B series do not

obtuse adder
#

But why are there pin holes?

quick rose
#

Are you looking at B550 or something?

obtuse adder
quick rose
#

UH

proven canopy
#

hahahaha

tall pelican
#

that's like am3

quick rose
#

That's socket AM3

#

You need

#

Z490 or Z590

obtuse adder
#

Uhhhhh

quick rose
#

Prefereably Z590 so you don't need a BIOS flash

proven canopy
#

Yeah, you'll want the non z version or the extreme Cat_laugh_omega

obtuse adder
#
#

Will this do?

#

It's ULTRA DURABLE.

quick rose
#

Completely overkill for 11400 but it will work

obtuse adder
#

Perfect.

#

Overkill the cheapest CPU of the 11th gen.

#

That motherboard isn't even that expensive compared to the ones I've been looking at for the B series

#

Like the first one I sent.

#

I even saw the motherboard on sale at Microcenter.

lavish tundra
#

go 3600c18 if you can

#

you should be able to

tall pelican
#

by "CXMT 8gbit A" I'm assuming 8gbit AFR, in which case even getting 3466 is good

lavish tundra
#

I see will it not go higher with even cl18 instead of 16?

tall pelican
#

nope, afr hits clock walls around 3200-3400

lavish tundra
#

I see

#

Thats a pretty bad die

prisma arch
#

how do i increase my ram speed

#

to 3266 or 3400 i guess

#

in bios

#

im using x570 tomahawk

lavish tundra
#

What ram kit did you purchase?

#

@prisma arch

prisma arch
#

umm corsair vengeance rgb pro 3200mhz cl16

#

wanna get it a tiny bit higher

lavish tundra
#

Ok so download thaiaphoon burner

#

and run it and send a screenshot here

I would look at the label as well, taiphoon guessed my corsair's dies

lavish tundra

everything else works

Ohh nvm name says 32gb

#

Ehh well could be 4x8gb

lavish tundra

Yeah

ig the dude lost interest tho lol

Lol

lavish tundra
#

so it doesnt really matter anyway

tall pelican
#

Everything is reported wrong

#

All corsair 8gbit hynix is reported as afr

#

Afaik micron says reve on all 8gbit

#

Corsair doesn't program what ic in the spd because they put it on the label

lavish tundra
#

Oh wow

#

Whats the point of using thaiaphoon then

zenith palm
#

To get larger sticks i guess

tall pelican
#

paid thaiphoon lets you spd write on supported platforms and sticks

they have a fab and everything

CXMT A behaves like trashbin CJR

sterile flame
#

My kit is ass

#

I have cxmt a

#

I needed to push 1.51V

#

Into this kit

#

Just for it to be stable

#

But my question is

#

Should I do 1.51V for a trtp of 10

#

Or 1.5V for a TRTP of 12

orchid flame
#

1.51

#

tRTP 10 is a big gain over tRTP 12

sterile flame
#

@orchid flame cant tell if 1.5v is even safe on cjr in the first place cause mixed info

#

At 1.51V I got stability

sudden torrent
#

Jedec is just setting the standards for xmp, there's some dies that run over 1.7v just fine

orchid flame
#

I’d krunk is willing to do it so am I

#

Lol JEDEC limits are BS

sudden torrent
#

That 0.01 extra volt will absolutely not kill it, even slowly

lavish tundra
#

Some dies also scale badly so you can see less perf from higer voltages than a lower value

sudden torrent
#

CJR does well around 1.5v from what I've read

#

But yeah if it was something like c-die no point going over 1.35v

tall pelican
#

like degraded past jedec

sudden torrent
#

Really? I must have missed that, skimmed a bit

sudden torrent
#

Although my c-die scaled up to a whopping 1.36v lol, sometimes that little extra does help

lavish tundra
#

not much more than that tho

#

running it at 1.5V will impact perf

sudden torrent
#

Absolutely. If I even did 1.37v I would have to regress the timings back to what I had them at 1.32v

#

Running it right on the edge, push too hard and you get cut

lavish tundra
#

Overclocking isnt purely higer value better

#

more voltage =/= more perf

sudden torrent
#

Yep there's just too many factors to just set max values and call it good.

#

You're more likely to hurt performance that way, if not damage something

lavish tundra
#

Thats a common mistake most people make tho... You shouldnt overclock anything till you know that part well or have help from someone who does

#

Floppa and fitz helped me a great deal with my ram and gpu

sudden torrent
#

I've learned a lot here too. I knew I only had the basic ideas before but now I know just how basic.

lavish tundra
#

Same tbh

#

I thought I knew a lot about tech till I joined up here

#

Now even after many months, Im still learning something new every day

#

I even managed to overclock my way onto 3dmark leaderboards thanks to the help from the wonderful people here

sudden torrent
#

Same, I'm rocking the #1 spot for my old config on time spy extreme and a couple others in top slots, also thanks to all the hints and pointers from everyone. In particular fitz and mr1111 have been tremendously patient and helpful.

lavish tundra
#

Thats really nice!

#

sadly for me theres a german dude who has a better score on my config than I do

#

although I did get the 65th best score ever recorded for a system with an rx570

sudden torrent
#

3 words my friend:
Ice bucket loop

lavish tundra
#

Ahahaha

#

I need to do that some day

#

sadly I dont have a pump or blocks for cpu and gpu

#

or tubes

sudden torrent
#

All you need to do is drop the rad in the bucket of ice water and agitate it

lavish tundra
#

I need to get an AIO

sudden torrent
#

Even if you just do the cpu it's totally worth the extra boost clocks for scores

lavish tundra
#

TBH my cpu can do 4.35GHZ all core prime95 stable on a crappy air cooler

#

4.425 all core stable enough for 3dmark

#

Thats at 1.256V all core

#

With an AIO I can push it way further

#

3600X btw

sudden torrent
#

Ah, yeah not bad at all for air

lavish tundra
#

Its a 410r btw

#

just google that cooler

#

its all that fits in my case

sudden torrent
#

You might get better results from PBO once you drop your temps more with a liquid loop

lavish tundra
#

compared to zen 3 that is

sudden torrent
#

Yeah but you can still manipulate it nicely with the temp scaling being one of the highest factors in boost bin choice

lavish tundra
#

even with all limits except voltage maxed on my board, it hardly ever does over 4.3GHZ and thats in single core games like minecraft java

sudden torrent
#

I can hit 5.1 on single core, more if I drop temps. 4.7 all core cinebench. That one is more a VRM limit for me. Them sinks get hawt.

lavish tundra
#

Thats zen3 tho right?

sudden torrent
#

Yeah 5800X

#

I got a nice sample

lavish tundra
#

Yeah PBO for zen2 doesnt come anywhere near PBO for zen3

lavish tundra
sudden torrent
#

I got it back in February from the shuffle, right after X470 boards got the zen3 update

lavish tundra
#

Really good stuff in that case

sudden torrent
#

Yeah honestly shocked my X470 board has done so well. It's C tier on the VRM list.

lavish tundra
#

Mine is a C tier as well iirc

#

Its tsill a great board

#

X570 elite wifi

#

strange because the b550 aorus elite has tier 2 vrms

sudden torrent
#

Oh absolutely, C tier is still a high standard. It has to run a 5900X at 1.2v max clock to pass that.

lavish tundra
#

whats A tier in that case?!

sudden torrent
lavish tundra
#

Could I get a link for that?

sudden torrent
#

Maxed 5950X is A tier lol

#

LN2 5950X is S class hero

clever epoch
#

I'm curious if anybody has come up with a more rigorous test for curve optimizer other than "run a bit at high load and low load and then see if you crash"

tall pelican
#

my "run a game, see if you crash"?

clever epoch
#

Would be nice if you could test each core at each step on the V/f curve a bit more... Rigorously

I thought by LTT you meant him cause he’s on the LTT forums

sudden torrent
#

I'm not preaching it as gospel or anything, just as a sort of guideline. Everyone's experience varies obviously.

orchid flame
#

Only issue with me is that there’s parts of it that are demonstrably false

#

Listen, AM4 recommendations are extremely easy

#

there’s like....6 motherboards that are relevant total

tall pelican
#

I'd call it 2-3 tbh

#

even then, I dumped am4 because no good mobos

orchid flame
#

b450/x470 gaming plus max
B450 and b550 Pro VDH
B550 Elite and Pro
B550 Unify(X) and Master
Dark Hero
B550i and b550 Strix-i

tall pelican
#

unifyx and master both have pcie gen4 issues

orchid flame
#

Don’t really care

tall pelican
#

master says you're in gen4, does bandwidth of gen 3

#

unifyx literally fails to boot gen 4

orchid flame
#

Yep

sudden torrent
#

Oh hey that's my board, the X470 gaming plus max

orchid flame
#

It’s a good board

#

4 phase 4C10N iirc

sudden torrent
#

No wonder I've gotten good results lol

lavish tundra
#

Whats wrong with the X570 elite?

tall pelican
#

my c8h couldnt do 1900if because asus is stupid and cant bios right

orchid flame
#

With 4C06N low side

orchid flame
#

Which is better

#

SiC651 vs SiC641 iirc

#

Not to mention memory and PCB improvements

#

Cheaper too

sudden torrent
orchid flame
#

Yep

#

Only relevant x570 imo is the dark hero

#

And even that is limited in its application

sudden torrent
#

Yeah if you're not doing LN2 on that it's wasted

orchid flame
#

On LN2 you just go Unify-X EZ

#

The Dark hero is what I imagine to be a board made for the average 5950x enthusiast owner

#

has useless features no one uses
Overpriced
Cool owl logo
Not horrible performance
Beat by a cheaper board but no one cares cause the cheaper board lacks the useless features
Not insanely priced like limited edition boards

orchid flame
#

That makes no sense

#

X570 pro has memory issues so you can’t even cite the PCB layers

#

My favorite part is that somehow the x570 elite is ranked below the b550-F

orchid flame
#

A board using the same old 4 phase config

orchid flame
#

It has them on different tiers

#

But it shouldnt

#

Nor should it be lower than the b550-F

#

Or similar boards

#

Omg the b550 A pro is above the X570 elite

#

This has to be a joke

lavish tundra
#

I mean the luke savenije guy is credited in the list

tall pelican
#

||if you're having to credit yourself on a list, its a bad list||

orchid flame
#

Asked him to delete it

#

He can’t cause he doesn’t contribute to it anymore

#

Thing is
Luke openly acknowledges that he doesn’t know the most about specific mosfets ajd VRMs.

lavish tundra
orchid flame
#

The jurrunio guy seems to claim they do yet they don’t actually have any credentials to back it up, and you can easily identify flaws within their team kings

#

*rankings

lavish tundra
#

I usually follow that list

orchid flame
#

John Bassig is great

#

His tiers are bad

#

But the info is over 90% correct

#

Only a few small errors but they are few and far between

#

I use my own sheet, which doesn’t have tiers. Normally I can just look at the VRMs and PCB and know how good it is

lavish tundra
#

It identifies the X570 aorus elite as a tier C

orchid flame
#

John’s tiers make no sense

#

They’re chipset dependant

#

And price dependant sometimes

lavish tundra
#

It does say SiC634 for the elite

orchid flame
#

SiC634 yeah

#

I got 641 wrong

It’s cause the new one uses 651

And 641 came out about a year earlier

It’s straight up a good board

MLCCs are multi layer ceramics

#

Type of Capacitor

#

Capacitors are used to filter the output and input power

#

Clean it up if you will

#

Helps clean a signal up, aiding consistency and integrity

#

Good filtering on ram means better signal and better OC

#

Good filtering on GPU means more consistent voltage and current, so higher maximum clocks

There’s your filtering 101

orchid flame
#

I can though cause I have a trick

#

I have “minimum” and “maximum” values

#

It’s not a set number

#

It’s a range

lavish tundra
#

Thats cheating

orchid flame
#

TBF it’s a small range

#

So basically you put in:

#

Frequency
CPU arch
Ranks
Dimm count

#

And it spits out everything you need

tall pelican
#

I see how it spits out info, and for 90% of people it wont work

orchid flame
#

Why not?

tall pelican
#

boards are dumb

orchid flame

I was very careful in giving good ranges

#

That should work

Speaking of this new reflections song is a bop

orchid flame
#

If it works for them, it’ll work for most people

#

Gonna get them to beta test it for me

#

This Friday I’ll put up only B die and Rev E and see how it goes

tall pelican
#

bdie would have the best chance of working

orchid flame
#

Yep

#

My biggest concern with Rev E is variation in chips

tall pelican
#

but like nobody who's paying you to oc their stuff has bdie

orchid flame
#

You’d be wrong

tall pelican
#

solid 80% of the mem I see is cdie

orchid flame
#

It’s actually mainly B die people on 5950s that pay for OC

#

They buy B die, expect 3800 14-14-14, can’t get it, get someone else to help them do it instead

tall pelican

those people arent on fiverr 😂

lavish tundra
#

modern walrus
#

fair enough. Will stop accordingly

#

btw does making a storage device available over the network slow it down a lot? I get terrible benchmarks on my Seagate Barracuda HDD & I'm guessing that's why

quick rose
#

Depends on your network

#

It can

#

Remember that your network speed is in Bits

#

And your drive speed is in Bytes

modern walrus
#

I don't use it for other computers' file history tho

quick rose
#

8 bits per byte

modern walrus
#

I dunon why I bother with FileHistory. Everything is on OneDrive so it's kinda redundant

quick rose
#

SO to get 100 megabyte transfer speed over the network you need 800 mbps speeds, almost gigabit speeds

modern walrus
#

I see

#

well it's locally attached to the computer I ran benchmark on

quick rose
#

OCCT for testing overclocks

modern walrus
#

I use CB at lot & OCCT

#

I use CB to check OC cuz it's faster than OCCT

#

1 CB run will tell me if I have L0 errors & all that fun in 10 minutes

#

OCCT seems to take like 30 to really start pushing high thermals

#

oh & for the record, I admit I could be totally wrong on everything cuz I'm a total noob

#

So if I say something dumb that's why

zenith palm
zenith palm
quick rose
#

Anta77 with TestMem5

modern walrus
#

I'm gonna run CB rn since I haven't since I swapped the RAM

dull ginkgo
#

If you want to test thermals, those stress tests aren't for thermals, they're for testing instability

#

Like p95 smallfft with avx slaps everything for thermals and power draw, so is furmark, but they're not as good at catching errors as say occt

modern walrus
#

I do change the OCCT time. It just seems like it waits awhile to start pushing hard (even when I get rid of the idle time on the front & back ends)

dull ginkgo
#

And testmem5 is basically best for now for memory testing

modern walrus
#

p95 is insane I don't even like using it lol

dull ginkgo
#

Occt large dataset?

modern walrus
#

I do the thing where you check AVX... the 2d column I think.

#

I can't look now cuz CB is running

dull ginkgo
#

Forgot all the settings, but the settings can dictate if you're testing for thermals or errors

#

Small dataset would be for thermals, with the constant load option

#

Large dataset with the variable load should be better for testing for errors

modern walrus
#

jeez CB hit 93 on two cores already

#

10900K can take the pummeling right? lol

dull ginkgo
#

95c thermal throttling iirc

modern walrus
#

I think it's 100 on this chip

dull ginkgo
#

And if it hits that in cb, it has no chance against p95 smallfft, just don't bother with p95 xD

modern walrus
#

lol that's why

#

I run p95 with stock settings & hit like TJ Max on 3 cores in the first 45 seconds

dull ginkgo
#

Yea 100c tjunction

#

According to ark

modern walrus
#

the thermals might be cuz I have it about 4 degrees warmer than the usual ambient in here cuz I'm kinda feeling sick

dull ginkgo
#

Stress tests are usually worst case scenario anyways

modern walrus
#

yikes not a great run going on here

#

I had to lower RAM voltage from 1.4 to 1.35 for the new set cuz it said to

#

but my max temp now is 97

#

not good

#

I dunno if those two things are related

#

here I was thinking I'd have a higher CB score with CAS 16 instead of CAS 18 RAM

#

noooope

quick rose
#

Not when you took 600 mhz bandwidth away

modern walrus
#

heck

#

is that memory try it! thing on MSI any good?

quick rose
#

Nah, better to do it yourself

modern walrus
#

ya but I dunno what I'm doing tbh

#

there's so many RAM variables compared to CPU & GPU

#

is there an OC scan thing like there is for CPU & GPU for RAM?

proven canopy
#

Doesn't matter really

modern walrus
#

I probably should've put the custom cooling loop on the 10900K. Do I understand correctly that there isn't much headroom for OC on Ryzens?

proven canopy
#

They'll still benefit from high end cooling.

modern walrus
#

good to know thanks.

#

Do you still mess with your OC settings are you finally just got to where it's not worth the effort anymore?

tall pelican
#

Still worth it if you need high fps

#

Tried playing apex legends with stock core/cache on my 10900kf, and 150 fps was unplayable on my 170hz monitor. Overclocked was holding the 190 fps cap

how the heck can you clock 5.5? 5.5 on all cores?? I can't even get a stable 5.1 on all cores because of the heat. My 5.0 on all cores is will hit 93 degrees on CB Multi. I'm running Arctic Freezer II 360 on it. What the heck am I doing wrong?

You gotta use the right kind of blade for metal, but nice job! Almost looks like it was meant to be there.

modern walrus
#

haha thanks. All I had was a 4.something inch hole saw for cutting in high hat lights

#

it was about perfect sizewise

#

Problem is the impact likes to go nuts with hole saws. It takes a lot of torque to spin one that big so I had to go slow so the neighbors didn't hear it

#

it kinda helped. I figured the air being pushed into the shrouds was being wasted & this way it shoots straight up to the AIO

#

I did like 4 degrees better on CB

sudden torrent
#

Ah forget the neighbors, I'd just shift to hammer drill and go at it

modern walrus
#

My brother has my hammer drill. I had to use this megladon impact haha

#

check this sucker out

sudden torrent
#

Not bad, I favor the DeWalt myself

modern walrus
#

The thing makes about as much torque as a mini Cooper so it's really vocal

#

back when I was in the electrical trade I mostly had Milwaukee but I got such a good deal on that thing that I ended up buying some DeWalt stuff to go with the batteries

#

they're great tools. I like using them. I sent a lot of Milwaukee tools back for warranty repair but we also kicked the crap out of them daily

sudden torrent
#

I almost managed to burn out the motor on my drill trying to mount a surveillance camera on concrete. I went through 2 batteries.

modern walrus
#

I think that hole saw was actually for drywall or plaster. it was smoking by the end

#

haha ya I burned the motor on an M18 Fuel 1/2 driver forcing a 3/4" bit thru concrete. I went out & got a 1-5/8" rotary hammer to handle big holes after that. That thing is a beast. It's truly amazing what they can run on a battery these days. Have you seen the Milwaukee MX like? I think that's what it's called. Anyway, they make massive concrete cutting saws & even a core drill that runs on battery

#

I wish I got to try that thing out. Core drilling is fun despite being mildly terrifying

fierce jungle
#

sudden torrent

It's definitely more strain on the IMC, which adjusting voltages and ratios can help with. I just don't know which ones will help with this specific issue lol.

sudden torrent
#

Did a little reading for you @fierce jungle and you'll need to run Gear 2 mode, especially at speeds above ~3800.
You'll probably need to adjust your base clock (bclk) to 103, which means you'll also need to adjust every other frequency on the computer. You may need to increase VCCIO and VCCSA voltage. If you don't want to do all this (don't blame you) there's always the option of setting the memory frequency and timings manually, based on what XMP is supposed to be.
Asrock bios doesn't know how to do these things automatically, some other boards do.
