Run crystaldiskinfo and/or crystaldiskmark on the hdd. Yes, they can eventually fail or wear out. Moving parts after all, and quality control can always be a factor. Most of my hdds are 4+ yrs old & still great for many games.

That's not 100% accurate.
It can check the surface of the disk for bad sectors and reallocate spare sectors to "repair" it. Having the sectors marked as bad means the read arms will skip past them, preventing further damage.
Once the sectors are reallocated it can try to recover any data that may have been damaged.
