Has anyone here played Half Life: Alyx?

It runs like absolute trash on my rig (it's in my nick), I'm getting 30-40fps ingame regardless of performance settings.

I feel like the problem may be the fact that it uses SteamVR. Other games that used to lag for me now run locked at max settings thanks to OpenComposite, which is a program that allows me to bypass SteamVR.

However OpenComposite doesn't support HLA yet, so I have to use SteamVR. Is there anything I could do to make the game run better? Currently it's only playable for me 30 minutes at a time because the lag makes me feel sick after a while.

I've already tried setting the processes (hlvr.exe, vrcompositor, and OVRserver) to realtime priority in Task Manager.

i had a somewhat similar issue recently with CemU, the Wii U emulator. it was the CPU that was causing the problem actually, I had to enable a setting called "triple core recompiler". This doesnt help much with SteamVR related stuff, but I just thought it was worth note

Rift S has better latency-free PCVR support with a supposedly better screen. The comfort is much better from what I've experienced and you have less reliance on Facebook (though you'll still have to sign into an account until/if an open source replacement is made).

Quest 2 can do wireless PCVR (with some latency) and will be supported with updates for a longer time by Facebook. You can always plug it into a PC with a USB-C cable to enjoy the better graphics and larger game library of PCVR at the expense of compression, minor latency, and some performance, but you also have the option of playing mobile games without a PC at pretty good performance. You also get 10Hz higher refresh rate, though in my testing it doesn't make a huge difference.

Did my best to provide my unbiased analysis but personally I would never choose the Quest 2 over the Rift S. It just feels a lot worse to me, but then again I haven't used it as much as the headset I own.

Either way, both of them make for amazing experiences and VR is totally worth the price on the lower end.

Yeah, I've learned that the hard way. Game has crashed so many times on me, froze my PC up, and honestly, none of us still know how to do anything yet.

I really enjoy star citizen but you can't go into it thinking it's a game

But like when I was really into it there was this streamer that organized big 20v20 battles where you'd all hop in your team's ship and land on the far side of some plateau from the other team on some random planet and fight on the ground to get their ship. And if you died you had to fly back and do air support

And there was this really profitable drug lab you had to navigate to by sight and landmarks because there was no auto travel to it, and then pvpers stalked it out to get the cargo ships, and then people came to interdict the pirates.

I kinda like just doing trade runs though

But there definitely are crashes and bugs and it's not finished gameplay, it's just kinda here's some alpha stuff feel free to make your own fun

I like taking my news van ship above a popular spaceport and doing "news" segments on the various ships that come and go. Sometimes I'll ask a fancy ship for a tour lifestyles of the rich and famous style

for the same price

now the quest 2 is out

and it has all the advantages the quest had over the rift s plus an even higher res screen than both, higher refresh rate, 2x performance of the og quest, and it costs $100 less

until recently

because they slashed the price of the rift s down to $300

so especially now, you could get a rift s or a quest 2 for $300. quest 2 has better screen, portable, more supported, hand tracking, pc vr capable, blah blah blah for the same price

rift s costs $300 for outdated headset + the cost of a VR capable pc so we are talking like at least $1000 🤠

to be fair, to make the quest 2 0 compromise from the rift s, youd need to buy the $80 oculus link cable and the $50 comfort strap, making the total cost $430 or $530 for 64gb vs 128gb respectively, plus the cost of the pc to use the link cable with, making it at least $1130 total

but still, thats the thing about the quest

you dont need the pc

you could get just the quest 2 + headstrap for $350 or $450 and still play tons of great games

2. it is a whole lot better, compare the screen res and refresh rate, i forget the exact res but ik the refresh rate is 72 vs 90, which makes a visible difference, especially in vr. Its also lighter and smaller, and most importantly it costs $100 less with more storage and updated controllers

for pcvr you need the oculus app, if wirelessly i think you need a few other things like sidequest, virtual desktop, etc
