Oculus Quest - entry level vr, great if you dont have a computer, okay if you do (its a standalone headset and does not require a PC but you can connect it to the PC if you want for PC VR games with better graphics or simply games that arent available on the Quest)
Cons - Audio isnt great, fixable by plugging in your own headphones, and comfort isnt great since its a bit front heavy. Also it only runs at 72hz when 90 is the industry standard.
Pros - cheap at just $400 for the 64gb model, doesnt require a PC, very comfortable and capable controllers
Vive Cosmos Elite - higher end desktop VR gaming, i ONLY recommend this if you have a super high budget as the only reason i would get this headset is if you wanted full body tracking, index controllers, and the wireless adapter as this headset is the only vr headset being sold new that has a wireless adapter.
Cons - flip up design of the headset puts more pressure on your forehead and on the back, although users still report it is comfortable. The controllers that it comes with are outdated (vive wands) and arent very good. Screen is only 90hz despite the high price of $900.
Pros - compatible with any SteamVR lighthouse based tracking accesories, so if you wanted the index controllers, full body trackers, you name it, its all compatible with the Cosmos Elite. Also the headset has great built in headphones.
Valve Index - highest end no compromise PC VR system. Comes with top of the line VR headset and comfortable and tech-packed controllers (finger tracking)
Cons - expensive, $1000 for the full kit (but you get Half Life Alyx included) things wear down and break after heavy use, however Steam replaces parts for free if you manage to keep the serial numbers
Pros - Best screen in a VR headset, maybe not the highest resolution, but still higher than most and the screen can go up to 144hz which makes a big difference for people who get motion sick easily or people who just want the best of the best. (1/3)

the index controllers are some of the best on the market, they have finger tracking and a good button layout, leagues better than the Vive Wands which ship with the Cosmos Elite and decently better than the Oculus Touch. The controllers even come with a strap built in instead of some cheapo wrist strap. The audio in the headset is the absolute best available, the design helps with immersion as they dont sit on your ears, but still sound fantastic and provide full 360 degree based positional audio. The comfort is also great, the materials used on the headset are very plush and absorb sweat, much better than whats on the Rift S or the Quest. The double halo design distributes weight well which also helps with comfort. Also, if you have a large play space, it ships with base stations 2.0 which allow for a much larger play space.
HP Reverb G2 - Combines some of the great tech from the Valve Index with some lesser spec stuff to help keep cost down. Inside out tracking means easier setup and less intrusive on your play space.
Cons - Controllers feature no sort of finger tracking, not even capacitive buttons, but the grip and trigger buttons are analog so its a nonissue tbh. The last HP VR headset had tons of quality control issues, so its prone to breaking down, however this is just suspicion and we will see when reviews come out.
Pros - highest resolution screen on a PC VR headset (without spending $5000), 90hz screen which is up from what Oculus currently has to offer, controllers are similar to Oculus Touch which means developers of games dont have to put in too much more effort to add WMR support to their game. 4 cameras for inside out tracking, 2 more than on previous gen WMR headsets. The included headphones are quite literally the exact same from the Index (steam helped design the headset) and you can read what i had to say about the index headphones on the last mini-section. (2/3)

you might have better luck with the Pimax Artisan, its lower res and 120hz

@full wing The better performance would overall create a much better experience but if you are playing less demanding games. 60fps is most likely enough fps to create a smooth performance. You can find online benchmarks with the cpu and gpu to see if they are ok. The 3600 and 3300x are most likely not going to bottleneck any budgetish gpu 2070<, I assume you will not be buying anything better then that giving your budget cpu choices. I'd say that a 3300x and a rx580 would be enough to get 60fps on most modern titles. Im not too experienced in this so take everything I say with a grain of salt, also sorry for the ramble but im bored asf.

so the Vive, Cosmos Elite, Index, Vive Pro, any PiMax headset, etc.

you should be purchasing all ur games and apps thru steam anyways because every headset is compatible with it, so if you get a different headset you will be able to play your games

if you get a base station tracked headset like the Index, Vive, Rift CV1, Cosmos Elite, Vive Pro, you will need to mount the lighthouses the headset comes with on your walls, optimally in the opposite corners if your play space, then the software guides you on how to set it up from there. The headsets come with two base stations, and they plug into standard wall outlets and connect to your PC over bluetooth
otherwise if you get an inside out tracked headset like the Rift S, Quest, Reverb G2, any WMR headset, vive cosmos, you dont have to mount anything on your walls, you just have to walk the headset around your room so it can scan it and know where your play space is
Inside out tracked headsets are less intrusive on your room as you dont need to set up sensors, but the tracking accuracy and fidelity is overall smaller than base station tracked headsets.

Oculus Quest 2/Lite expected to be announced by Sept. 15th, with an adjustable IPD switch which has two settings, one for the range of lower IPDs and one for higher, so not as good as full IPD adjustment but a lot better than none. New controllers look to be more similar to the OG touch controllers featuring a larger faceplate and slightly different button placement. Theres a chance that they might sell the headset and controllers separately and as a bundle, that way if you just want the headset for media consumption you can use hand tracking as a more simple and intuitive input method, and if you want to do games you can buy the controllers separate or as a bundle with the headset.
All speculation for the selling as a bundle and such, but it makes sense since they just quickly cancelled the Oculus Go
sadly looks like no over ear headphones, so gotta stick with the sucky head band audio design, but hopefully the quality has gotten better.
