For just battery life

elfin mural
#

i wanna have my cake and eat it all for when i do swap from my tuf a15 to a light laptop

elfin mural
#

the cake i want is
120hz oled or ips
32gb of ram. if not, must have sodimm slots
4050 equivalent or better igpu

#

i have 7735hs and 4050 rn

sinful blade

ashen swan
#

thats hard

elfin mural
#

if it's not sodimm then it must have 32 gigs

#

that's really only my req for ram tbh

ashen swan
#

I'm fine with 24gb

elfin mural
#

32gb is required for me in case i do want to play ram intensive games

ashen swan
#

lenovo does that with CAMM btw

elfin mural
#

ones that require a bigger buffer

#

yeah, camm laptops are way too pricey rn

ashen swan
#

Linux uses 6 gbs with 12 chormium tabs open rn :3

elfin mural
#

lenovo only does sodimm on lower end stuff

#

either sodimm, lpddr5 or lpddr5x

ashen swan
#

would've gotten a 14 smth smth model 2 in 1 if it were not for the price

elfin mural
#

the core ultra 7 355 does have xe3 igpu but it's only 4 xe cores

#

i assume it's slower than arc 140T in 155H and 255H

ashen swan
elfin mural
#

7 xe cores are only on 125H and 225H

ashen swan
elfin mural
#

those use 140V

#

8 xe cores

#

looks like if i want something with competent gpu, i gotta go ideapad 5 pro

#

but honestly i have many years ahead before i can even save up enough lol

#

things might change

#

ram prices are dropping

ashen swan
#

All I want tbh is the Blue version of Lenovo's 2 in 1

#

are those called aura edition or smth ?

elfin mural
#

nah

ashen swan
#

I hate Lenovo names

elfin mural
#

aura edition is just a name they slap on high-end models

#

thinkpads, or even yoga 7's

#

the 2-in-1's are called yoga or 2-in-1

#

and even some yogas aren't even 2-in-1

#

yoga can mean two things, thin and light, or thin and light 2-in-1

bitter ridge
#

Aura edition naming is exclusive to Lunar lake iirc

ashen swan
#

Yoga 9i 2-in-1 Aura Edition with 258V is 1550 is kinda cool

elfin mural
#

yep

#

aura edition = lunar lake

ashen swan

man a Framework 14 with 338H is GONNA BE COOKED forpricing then

by then im sure a 4050 class igpu would exist by then for a not very high price tag

#

i'm not gonna drop 2k on a laptop

bitter ridge
#

Nvidia arm laptops also likely to be an option by the time you save up

#

Apparently announcement this computex

elfin mural

depends on how well arm translation works by then

if it works seamlessly with not too big of a perf loss bruteforced by the sheer perf of the soc itself

My workplace sells high-end custom AI-oriented workstations, for people who want to run at-home local AI models. These typically have 16-core CPUs or more, 128GB+ of RAM, and often multiple GPUs. They start at like 14K.

Me and a colleague are at a bit of a disagreement on this.
One of us believes that the type of customer who is interested in spending this much money on a PC, would want RGB in it. The argument is, high-end cars typically have ambient lighting, so approach it from that perspective. Maybe even calling it "ambient lighting" in the listing.
The other believes this customer is interested in a highly professional PC look with a blackout style.
If it helps with perspective on this, all 4 of the cases we are currently considering using for these builds have no windows.

If you were going out to spend this much money on a dedicated AI workstation, would you want blackout, or RGB?

sinful blade
#

Blackout.

sinful blade
#

Still blackout.

olive plaza
#

When I say 14K+ it has a Threadripper Pro

craggy shoal
#

Black it out for sure. This sounds like more of a professional type of computer rather than a "for fun" computer. These aren't cars. And if you think about it, professional cars usually just have sponsors and the necessary performance parts. Gaming PCs are more comparable to "for fun" street cars (lowered, loud exhaust, other types of flashiness. Again, all for fun and aesthetics)

olive plaza
#

I'm glad you guys are on my side here

#

LOL

safe cape
#

GOLD

fluid gulch
#

Plus no RGB means no RGB software nonsense to control it

#

Win win

ashen swan
craggy shoal
#

I think it's cool to add RGB to it, but maybe make it an option. One of my servers has RGB in it, but it's just not worth it. It's a cool statement piece, but unnecessary

ashen swan
#

Thats alot

olive plaza
craggy shoal
#

That's the perfect middle ground imo

olive plaza
#

which is to start off advertising it as blackout. Fill the case with Arctic P12 Pro

#

and then we'll replace out the primary fans with Arctic P12 Pro A-RGB fans, and advertise that as an option

#

But I don't actually expect us to sell more than like maybe 1-2 units with A-RGB

olive plaza
#

If you buy a million dollar car, you're going to be showing it off

#

and I don't feel like the type of person who buys a Threadripper Pro is going to actively show off the fact they have 256GB of RAM in their home

velvet summit
craggy shoal
#

Also, RGB takes up a surprising amount of energy. I think given my PC, it adds up to 50W of power consumption. Doesn't sound like much, but it would be a lot over time

velvet summit
#

you could put rgb as a free upgrade for people who want it but i'd reckon anybody spending minimum 14k on a system (that isn't meant for gaming) would not care about rgb

craggy shoal
#

That's what I'm thinking

#

@olive plaza Are these basically desktops, or do they come in a server chassis? (Just out of curiosity lol)

olive plaza
#

Some of the chassis choices include options from Fractal, Phanteks, and Silverstone

#

none have a window

safe cape
olive plaza
#

so yes my idea was just - let's put some nice, professional looking Arctic P12 Pro fans. The front of these cases have a fine mesh, so let's install fans with good static pressure

safe cape
#

like this one

olive plaza
#

that's insane

safe cape
#

why ?

olive plaza
#

the screen is clearly cut off at the bottom, and the CPU power cable

#

This is a cool concept but the workmanship here is

#

I have to look away

#

I hope this was a concept piece

#

that's all

safe cape
olive plaza
#

Also to that end of the kind of customers buying high end workstations, as others said, "Not having RGB software installed is a plus"

#

I think not having the control software for a screen like this installed would be another plus

safe cape
#

yes

#

but you will buy another screen

#

to monitor temp/fans XD

pliant berry
#

the software dependency is what makes those screens and such just stupid imo

olive plaza
#

if I needed to constantly monitor my temps then my setup is not cooled properly

pliant berry
#

if it was a dedicated hardware integration that was independent from the operating system then i'd be more ok with it

olive plaza
#

I'd rather throw whatever money this screen costs at making my cooling better

#

if that means putting in fans that are better for the application or building in a case that has less restriction on the airflow

#

like, the cooling should be good enough for a workstation like this, that I don't need to monitor it

#

fun fact. back in the day when you still had room in a case to install a DVD drive, they made fan hubs and temperature monitoring devices that installed in those bays

safe cape
#

YES

olive plaza
#

they were dedicated hardware, and they had thermal sensors with long cables

#

you could place them where you wanted

#

those were cool

queen briar
#

im still ltrying to figure if the 2 systems will run in a single room

olive plaza
#

UPS aren't rated in wattage, that's the problem

queen briar

but on seperate wall sockets

they're rated in VA as output from DC

velvet summit

true

olive plaza

velvet summit

if you have 2 power supplies, you could use 2 ups's i guess, but i have a feeling you're going to trip the breaker if you have a constant 1600w load (assuming power is both in the same room, and in like a bedroom with a single 15a breaker)

queen briar
olive plaza
#

breaker

#

I barely even knower

velvet summit
#

real

#

just hire an electrician to run 20a circuits into your room and get a rackmount ups that does 2000va

velvet summit
#

and while you're at it also get a mini split installed into that room because you'll need zoned cooling to keep that room cool

velvet summit
#

the problem with central air is that most central forced air heating/cooling is not zoned

queen briar
#

there was one PC dude i use to watc who said " if you dont have central air, you shouldnt own a PC, you need to get your life together first "

velvet summit
#

majority of houses (in north america at least) are single zone heating/cooling

#

there is one thermostat that controls the temperature for the whole house

#

if you have one room that is cold, but the room where the thermostat is at the correct temperature, the heat won't turn on

#

in multi zone heating/cooling (forced air specifically), each zone (typically every room) has a thermostat that you can set, and typically there are duct flaps that open and close depending on which room needs heating or cooling

#

in older (i'd say typically european) houses, quite a few houses have multi zone heating as they had a boiler system, and the thermostats just controlled a solenoid to let water flow

#

multizone forced air systems are significantly more expensive to install than single zone which is why they're pretty rare outside of larger buildings like mansions, but ducted forced air (single unit of it) is less effective for larger buildings so some of those use either boiler systems, or multiple units for heating

or in warehouses, typically they're not ducted and just blow into the work area to heat it

#

anyways that doesn't really matter much, the main issue really is with a single zone system (specifically with cooling in this instance) is a room with even 1000w of heating from the pcs would get quite toasty, and forcing the air out of the room with a fan or just the door open would lower the temp of the room, but can cause other rooms to get too cold if the ac is on (from the added heat from the pcs), or the pc room being too hot

by adding a mini split (or window ac) system, you'll effecitvely add an additional zone of cooling, which then the room and the rest of the house would remain comfortable without being too cold

#

i should say this is less of an issue in smaller buildings like an apartment

#

more of an issue in detached homes

It would be very surprising to me. Looks like tpu might be using the lowest of the configurable tdp 5060 at 45W. That still feels like the 3060 should be losing but could explain their result. More vram on a 5060m too, 3060m was 6gb.

Lenovo does that

Look whether it's actually faster or slower, the fact we actually have to discuss it to determine whether it is or not, with a 2 generation gap, is CRAZY

heady plinth

Yeah a loq or something else decent should have the full power version or close enough to it. A nitro v or something over focused on thin and light presumably sucks. A reasonable cooling solution is something to look for too on performance.

mobile is one place where this makes sense as a smaller memory bus dramatically decreases die size, which means lower power draw and therefore less heat. which has the added benefit of requiring less cooling, smaller batteries, and cheaper chassis

and mind you that was after 5 consecutive generations of Intel reusing the same architecture, really 6 if you count broadwell which is sort of halfway skylake

upper rain
tranquil pebble
#

it took a long time for a CPU to come out as a worthy upgrade over the 4790k I had

upper rain
#

the 10900k yielded so poorly that Intel had to make a second i9 SKU (10850k) with slightly lower boost clocks to avoid chucking 99% of their 10 core yields into 8 core i7's

#

i can't imagine how bad the 10900ks must have been to bin...

tranquil pebble
#

Wasn't that around the time Intel was getting super desperate

upper rain
#

i think they were stressed by coffeelake refresh, but rocketlake was when they really went mental

#

mfw Intel launched a generation slower than the previous one, with fewer cores than the previous one, on the heels of AMD releasing a more efficient CPU that's like 30-50% faster

Intel lost the plot with Skylake
