The top one is a CPU. The square socket on the mobo with the white brackets on top is where the CPU goes.

The square on the back of the gpu is actually the back of where the gpu's chip is socketed and the little metal bracket with screws in it is what keeps the cooler attached to the PCB

The gpu is slotted into the top pcie slot

Yeah what you are seeing is basically the back of the gpu mounting, and then the front of the cpu mounting mechanism

You install all of them and it'll run with default drivers which will need to be replaced with current drivers from the respective company of the cpu and the gpu

The default drivers will get you display and stuff but they won't be performant in games and could sometimes get pepeg when doing certain tasks

The mobo will tend to have drivers too, usually chipset drivers you'll need to install when it is up and running

If they want to put more than 4 m.2s that's the only place they can get the extra lanes from. Or I suppose they could do like the tomahawk and have a second m.2 direct to cpu that disables the usb4 ports. You only get 12 lanes going into the chipset too so you'd still end up with stuff needing to share down there.

28 with 4 dedicated to the chipset and 24 usable. Lga 1700 also had 28 with only 20 usable and 8 to the chipset and 4x of the usable ones were gen 4 for some reason. You get a lot more lanes into the chipset with Z boards though.

There are 24 usable lanes on the cpu. A x16 for gpu slot and x4 for primary m.2 slot are mandatory, last 4 are up to the motherboard vendor. X870 and x870e have mandatory usb4 ports which use some of those lanes up.

True, it shouldn't make much difference unless you have something else like vram limit already causing problems then it might stutter worse but you shouldn't be doing that in the first place.

That's one of the good things about intel. You get a reasonable amount of lanes into the chipset instead of max 12.
