but SATA controllers can only work with sata drives, and not sas drives
there is like a 0% chance that your mobo has a SAS controller; basically only server boards would have that, but you can get a (used) SAS HBA for fairly cheap to connect SAS drives

and if you buy a SAS HBA you can build a NAS easier

because they generally support 8 or more drives
