yeah that's because they don't really make passive woofers for home anymore, they all have built in amps. if you plugged the sub into a front or center it would work technically but you lose a channel if you were using it for a full surround setup

People just really don't want to upgrade motherboards, and want to get close to 12900K performance out of their motherboard from 5 years ago, so they pay extra
this is not a new concept in any way. Kingston and Evergreen capitalized on this idea in the late 80s and 90s
that's basically what a 5700X3D/5800X3D is, it's bringing your old system to new levels of gaming performance. And now that they're discontinued, the market is adjusting to demand

Reasoning behind this is because half the VRAM on a 3090 is on the backside of the PCB, so it quickly reaches thermal limits under continuous memory load such as AI compute, then all of the VRAM throttles and it becomes slow
3090TI it's all on the front side of the PCB, they used double-capacity chips, so it's all cooled properly

The whole 2:3 ratio doesn't actually net you more performance. While yes, running 2:3 SOMETIMES gets you slightly better latency in the small single digits, the gain is easy overcome by just raising fCLK up a notch due to the increased bandwidth.
