the p nodes are typically not that much more expensive compared to the base node

AMD went from sub 2ghz to almost 3ghz in one gen on the SAME node in GPU (rdna 1 -> 2) by going for a more narrow design that clocks higher. there was also a lot of low hanging fruit to optimize IPC since RDNA 1 was a but undercooked, which helped with the overall performance uplift, but i think when you take into account that not only is AMD jumping a few node steppings, they're jumping and entire generation of node steppings it makes sense that they can pull some crazy 7GHZ huge IPC gain beat out of a hat

i mean they're going from not even peak N5 family to potentially cream of the crop GAAFET transistors all in one go. they're skipping an entire family of significantly improved FINFET parts

to me it's just a question of whether they're optimizing more for clocks or more for IPC, bc they can wildly improve performance either way. and the best part about it, to my mind anyway, is that if they go primarily for clocks (which they just might based on the rumors), they'll still get a massive IPC gain with the reorganized MCM design. interposers are expensive but goodness are they amazing for reducing latency across dies

yeah it was a KILLER design, like actually incredible. they had a node advantage, but not a super significant one (at least by theoretical density, yields were heaps worse on Samsung 8nm) and they still made a more die space efficient architecture than Nvidia by a staggering margin, AND almost won the raster performance crown with much worse memory modules rhat, in a sane market, would have been like half the price of G6X
