depends on USB generation, USB 3.0 is around the same rates as SATA, 3.1+ and all the random 5gbps+ standards beyond that will be faster, but generally you won't have many of those ports.

the drive itself also has to be capable of it too, external hdd won't exactly be faster just because the interface is capable of higher bandwidth
