you can see on the bottom of the heatspreader that they use a solder to transfer heat from the die (left) to the IHS (right). The solder they use is pretty good at conducting the heat but liquid metal conducts heat better. Ideally, you want to remove the heatspreader entirely & make it that the cooler sits directly on the die (like how cooling is done on graphics cards)
