the issue with public internet isnt that attackers can sniff your passwords and such; as long as no passwords and such are sent over plaintext (which if your bank does, that is a HUGE security flaw) you are safe from that
the issue lies in man in the middle attacks, when somebody spoofs the DNS and sends you to their version of the bank site and tries to make you input your details into it; but as long as you verify that the certificate is valid, then you're safe for that as well
a raspberry pi if you have one is perfectly adequate for using as a vpn server
some routers even have it built in
there's also a side benefit of self hosting a vpn, which is that you can access your home's network securely (point to site vpn)

-32GB of ddr5 which should be enough for practically anything + DUAL CHANNEL
-Capable GPU that can run a good chunk of games (beware of vram hungry ones tho)
