I'm convinced it's the cablemod cables

for the longest time I've been doing detective work

initially, I blamed PBO offsets

then I thought it was my memory OC

then I took the CPU out & found it in this condition

then I fitz polished all that crap off

(yes, I polished the side of my CPU that connects at the socket--desperate times)

then I went back to blaming memory

so I pulled the motherboard & CPU out of the case & set it up on test bench

I then went thru 4 different BIOS trying to fix memory & landed on ProcODT needed to be at some somewhat odd setting

after hundreds of VT3 iterations, I started tuning PBO again

did scores of CoreCycler runs with Prime95

finally got memory & PBO magnitudes ostensibly on point

I reinstalled Windows & various games, etc.

even really stressed the system running Furmark 4k benchmarks

I didn't think my PSU had issues since it got thru Furmark bumping 874w on GPU

then, mysteriously, when things just started to look okay again, it did me a heckin

whole system crashed & it began running POST codes again

eventually after some clear CMOS action, it finally POSTed

I reloaded OC settings but it didn't last long so I tried dropping all PBO offset magnitudes by half

then I noticed the two cablemod cables that each convert 4-6+2s to a single 12vhpwr were sticking out from under the PSU shroud a bit

so I pushed them in a bit & the whole system crashed again

for whatever reason, it refused to POST

I tried swapping the GPU riser & that did nothing

so I connected iGPU & disconnected 4090 entirely

system POSTed so I wasn't sure if it was an issue with the cables or the 4090 itself

so I drained the gosh darn heckin loop & took the 4090 out & connected it to another PSU using the adapters it came with instead of the cablemod cables

it's now with 13900KS on the test setup & I've yet to crash or otherwise experience problems

so signs point to the cables

I should pull the 1600w PSU that it's usually on but then I have to break my cable management to get the EPS & 24-pin cables out

which ig I'll do tomorrow

& I'll run the 4090 on 13900KS system with the adapters & 8 6+2s

if I can't get that to crash, I'll swap the 8 cables to the cablemod cables

if that works fine, ig that leaves me only to conclude something is wrong with the motherboard

at which point, I dunno, I guess I'll charter a boat so I can throw the whole PC into the ocean to become an artificial reef

ehh it's a pretty major setback that it's missing half the memory channels but different ddr3, clear CMOS, reseating CPU, or other typical fixes might get you around that

there's still a pretty significant question that needs to be answered with that tho: is it an issue with the motherboard or the CPU's IMC that's causing that

either way tho, $90 is fairly cheap but I'm not sure what you plan to use this for

if you wanna overclock a 4690K for hwbot or something then fine but otherwise, I'm not even sure what 4th gen still handles well

personally, I find hwinfo to be the single most useful thing to have on a PC because it's going to pretty much show you every voltage, temperature, & power consumption reading your computer has
