They can do power efficiency but they threw it out the window

#

A good example is RX 6600

opaque sedge
#

Its so strange like commit to it for all products yk?

tranquil pebble
#

Nvidia GeForce are even more power hungry AFAIK

rancid juniper
#

Lol

tranquil pebble
#

4000 series eat power like popcorn

opaque sedge
tranquil pebble
#

XTX is also well beyond peak efficiency for RDNA 3

opaque sedge
#

350watts 💀

#

That thang must be hot

rancid juniper
#

Bro the XTX can eat more than 400 watts

craggy shoal
#

The 4090 is like 450W

opaque sedge
#

Watts reminds me there is absolutely no coil whine in my 4070 super

#

It feels weird to mot heard that humming whine

rancid juniper
opaque sedge
#

Oh wait put my ear against my case’s front vent can hear it a bit

craggy shoal
#

Come to think of it I forgot what coil whine sounded like since switching to my 4070 Super

rancid juniper
#

TF is a coil whine?

tranquil pebble
#

probably not the greatest method of measuring though

#

since max TDP doesnt equal power use

craggy shoal
#

Bruh I don't get how my parents will watch a lot of HDR-enabled movies without HDR enabled on the TV. They’ll always be at a scene with a lot of sunlight and the lighting makes no sense. Does anybody else deal with parents like these? 💀

#

"Yeah HDR video it'll look good" (doesn't know what HDR is or how to actually make it look good)

opaque sedge
#

Bros im playing gow ragnarok and in a quest kratos just called mimir ||brother|| like seriously he was being nice Kratos was BEING NICE

tranquil pebble

I know what HDR is, but definitely not how to make it look good

craggy shoal
tranquil pebble
#

well obviously

craggy shoal
#

They don't recognize "oh this video looks a little dark maybe I should tune the TV's settings"

tranquil pebble
#

Some devices there is no need to change anything, like phones

#

it just does hdr by default

opaque sedge
#

i cant believe this dx11

rancid juniper
#

This is DX11

opaque sedge
#

well its a port i think its a different api for playstaion

rancid juniper
#

PS4 iirc is probably limited up to DX11 type titles

opaque sedge
rancid juniper
#

I wasn't trying to correct you

#

Sorry

opaque sedge
tranquil pebble
rancid juniper
#

And RT needs DX12

opaque sedge
#

wut there's dx9?

tranquil pebble
tranquil pebble
opaque sedge
#

ghost of tsushima doesnt support rt

rancid juniper
#

That's the point

opaque sedge
#

isnt dx11 more than a decade old?

rancid juniper
#

It's run on a older api for ps4

#

Yes

opaque sedge
#

so games have been using dx apis for half a century?

rancid juniper
#

It's not only dx

#

You have opengl, vulkan, mantle, and more

#

I think mantle became vulkan

tranquil pebble
#

When we refer to DirectX versions, it is usually Direct3D specifically being referred to.

opaque sedge
#

man its crap like this that sometimes makes you wish you were immortal and rich, rich being the important part

tranquil pebble
#

and there have in fact been 12 major versions of DX

opaque sedge
#

iykwim

#

😎

tranquil pebble
#

things moved absurdly fast in the 90s

rancid juniper
#

Wow very short gap between 10 and 11

#

And then it's taken awhile till 12 came out

#

But it's been nearly a decade so where's DX13?

#

I realize something, tf happened to DX4?

#

Is it acceptable to ask questions about Newegg products in general chat? I'm looking at mini-PCs on the Newegg website, and have some questions.

rancid juniper
#

Yea you can

tranquil pebble
rancid juniper
ancient swift
#

DirectX is PC and Xbox cause its the (Direct)X-Box.

Nintendo and Sony have their own API's NXAPI for the Switch and GNM and GNMX for the PS4

rancid juniper
#

PS4 based on x86

#

😏

azure hedge
#

My girlfriend is looking for a mini-PC with a price around $700 that is capable of running games like OW2 at a reasonable FPS rate. She's requesting 16GB of ram or higher and 1 TB SSD. I've never really researched mini-PCs before so I'm not sure which are best to choose haha.

tranquil pebble
#

and 12 has had multiple releases

ancient swift
rancid juniper
ancient swift
#

Valve is looking into arm64 again

rancid juniper
ancient swift
#

they've been testing Half life and other games on arm.

#

Wonder if they'll do an arm based Steam Deck 0.0

rancid juniper
#

Doubt

opaque sedge
ancient swift
#

or let an android handheld manufacturer make an Arm handheld for SteamOS.

opaque sedge
#

Or maybe its not that well optimized

rancid juniper
#

They still sticking with AMD and their powerful APU solutions, however it would be interesting to see AMD dabble into the arm(s) race

tranquil pebble
rancid juniper
#

Oh

#

Well dX12 is taking its sweet time

tranquil pebble
#

AMD already did mess around with ARM with Opteron line

rancid juniper
#

Opteron was arm?

#

Tf

ancient swift
#

Nvidia too with the Tegra and so on.

tranquil pebble
rancid juniper
#

Probably embedded chips

#

Ok why did I say that

tranquil pebble
#

opteron a1100

opaque sedge
#

man this game looks so good lol, was kind of regretting not waiting for a sale but nahhh

rancid juniper
opaque sedge
opaque sedge
rancid juniper
#

This guy is breezing through all PS titles and I'm not even done with the first GOW

ancient swift
#

Its kinda funny cause the switch is so underclocked that by overclocking it you can emulate switch games on android.

rancid juniper
ancient swift
#

Its the only console that can actually emulate itself.

rancid juniper
rancid juniper
#

Alr man sheesh calm down

opaque sedge
#

not ragnarok but

ancient swift
rancid juniper
opaque sedge
#

the combat felt better in the 2018 game tho ngl

rancid juniper
#

Switch 2

ancient swift
#

Can't wait for the Switch 2 tbh

#

As long as it launches with an OLED

#

The Legion Go and the Ayn 2 Mini are the last handhelds I'm getting without an OLED. Theres no reason for them to not have OLED screens anymore imo.

tranquil pebble
#

looking into it more... and Valve was involved in the development of Vulkan apparently.

ancient swift
#

Ye to get away from Microsoft Dependency

tranquil pebble
#

Its like holy crap, so many awesome things Valve did in 10 years

ancient swift
#

Its why they are a major supporter of proton/wine as well.

tranquil pebble
#

Valve was also apparently a founding member of the Khronos Group in 2000. Insane.

#

guess there is no need to worry about Valve changing directions lol

ancient swift
#

Apple has their own translation layer too that can be used on Linux to help x86 apps run on Arm. not sure if it only works on apple's hardware though.

velvet summit
#

is apple's m series chips specifically part of the arm arch? or is it an in-house risc arch

ancient swift
#

Its Arm

tranquil pebble
#

its ARM with Apple extensions

velvet summit
#

i see

#

so apple didnt go completely nonstandard in that front then

#

unless their translation layer relies on one of their extensions

tranquil pebble
#

probably does

#

Apple likes to mix just enough proprietary stuff in to make it hard to use their stuff for other systems

tranquil pebble
#

that said, the Mac and iOS kernel itself is open source

#

its all the stuff on top of it that is not

velvet summit
#

isnt it a unix based os iirc

tranquil pebble
#

yes, BSD like

velvet summit
#

i just remember that apple used to develop CUPS

#

well, know

#

i wasnt there when it happened

tranquil pebble
#

I have used CUPS on Linux before

velvet summit
#

well, technically i was alive, but yeah

#

also i still use cups for the print server feature

#

and yeah i use it on raspbian/debian

tranquil pebble
#

if you want a taste of pure unix, look up OpenIndiana... Its a relative of Unix System V

#

that can run on modern hw

#

Unix is barely hanging on there these days though lol. Linux has almost entirely replaced it.

velvet summit
#

asides from apple stuff, what even still uses unix as a base

#

actually

#

i know the answer

#

mainframes

ancient swift
#

Android and Linux are based on unix

velvet summit
#

true

ancient swift
#

well android is based on linux and linux is based on unix lol

velvet summit
#

yeah was gonna say lmao

tranquil pebble
#

Linux is a Unix-like kernel but it is not Unix in origin

ancient swift
#

Ohhh true

velvet summit
#

oh yeah wasnt it because unix wasnt open source or smth like that

tranquil pebble
#

it was basically a clone of sorts

velvet summit
misty sparrow
#

what

velvet summit
#

ワンピース

tranquil pebble
#

by the time open unix was available it was too late

ancient swift
#

Rosetta does function on Linux though so its probably close enough or apple is smart enough to also develop for linux users on their hardware

tranquil pebble
#

but if it does that is a shock, knowing apple

velvet summit
#

Who knows
Maybe they had a change of heart frfr

tranquil pebble
#

Any "change of heart" of Apple would be a monkey's paw situation

pliant berry
#

Alright which screen protector and case do I buy for my iphone

ancient swift
#

Apparently you can but its not intentional. Its not seamless like it is on Apple hardware. So you might as well just use other compatibility layers.

tranquil pebble
#

I have eight sticks of 16 GB 3200 MHz DDR4 coming tomorrow. 128 GB of RAM in octo-channel is gonna go hard.

misty sparrow
#

why do you need 128GB again?

tranquil pebble
#

I dont, but it wasnt too expensive to buy it, and I wanted to populate all 8 slots on my board

One of my tires has a hole in it somewhere

#

My car go: do you wanna pay rent and utilities next month or do you want to drive to work

#

And I'm literally getting an oil change in 8 days and it just spawns a hole just to annoy me

storm narwhal
#

What about a tire patcher thing

#

Poke a strip of rubber into the hole and seal it with glue

opaque sedge
nocturne flicker
#

It seems to be a smol one somewhere on the tire as the air leaks very slowly over time, so they might be able to patch it

opaque sedge
#

If its not in the sidewall should be easy enuf to patch it

storm narwhal
#

Oh that's true too yeah if its already patched before

nocturne flicker
#

But it can't hold over 30psi or it instantly shoots out the air

opaque sedge
storm narwhal
#

Soap water can help you find the leak

opaque sedge
#

The puncture might be big then

storm narwhal
#

If you see it bubbling that's where the hole is

opaque sedge
nocturne flicker
#

As in the air being put in is enough to get pushed out. It is currently about 29psi and sounds and looks stable

#

But I push more air in it hisses it out

storm narwhal
#

Like a cat

#

How I know this don't ask

#

I don't know either

nocturne flicker
#

Luckily today is Sunday so I am off tomorrow. So if I wake up to it being flat I have time to screw around with it

storm narwhal
#

Patching with the way I said isn't hard at all but

#

Just depends on the other factors

#

That's like the extent of my tire leakage knowledge tho

#

But I do know a tire made out of a mesh of Nitinol has a much higher compression ability

#

And can be repaired with heat, obviously

nocturne flicker
#

I have to hope Ford didn't put on more cheap tire lug nuts when I had them replaced so that I can actually take the tire off

storm narwhal

Unless the underlying structure has suffered damage

The lugs just explode-

storm narwhal
#

I'm really stretching my barely existent car knowledge today

velvet summit
#

lmao

weak cedar
velvet summit
#

all you have to do for an oil change is have a method of safely lifting the car high enough to get under it (whether that is with a jack and jack stands, or you get one of those stands that you drive onto, or if you have a car lift)

#

and then you pull the plug on oilpan
make sure you are looking at the engine though

#

somebody pulled the plug on their transmission drain port 💀

#

but that's a bit further into the car

#

and then replace the oil filter; some cars have it easier to reach, some are terrible

#

put some oil on the new filter gasket, so that it doesnt bind while screwing it in

#

you screw that in hand tight

storm narwhal
#

I think I'd need a winch first no

velvet summit
#

if you have a pickup, and you can squeeze under it, you dont even have to lift the truck

mighty hazel
velvet summit
#

though this is more typical for like, semi trucks

#

those are often tall enough to slide under

#

just grab some spare cardboard

mighty hazel
velvet summit
#

those creepers dont work well for anything but smooth concrete

#

also try to work while somebody is with you in case of any accidents

#

though this is mainly important when you're not using jackstands where every warning says that you need to use it when using hydraulics because those are only as strong as the seal

sinful blade
tranquil pebble
#

yeah all that is way too much effort for me

sinful blade
velvet summit
#

it takes only around an hour if you dont have a car lift

#

half of that is just grunting and trying to get the oil filter off

#

lmfao

tranquil pebble
#

I would literally screw it up somehow too

tranquil pebble
#

This isn't just something everyone can do

velvet summit
#

i would say it is
it is very simple work

#

not really much to screw up

#

you tell the place you're buying the oil and filter from your make, model, and year, and they'll find the right parts

tranquil pebble
#

Simple to understand maybe but it sounds like it requires some muscle

velvet summit
#

not really, it's just hard to get a grip

#

though sometimes the previous mechanic screws something on too tight

tranquil pebble
#

yeah and that kind of stuff I can't deal with

velvet summit
#

so that may take some more muscle, though even that is more of an issue of you just laying down and not having much good leverage to undo a bolt

tranquil pebble
#

I literally have trouble opening food containers sometimes

velvet summit
#

to be fair, there's oil filter wrenches

#

though some cars have less space to fit it

nocturne flicker
velvet summit
#

💀

tranquil pebble
#

you're assuming too much about what some people are capable or not capable of doing

#

getting under a car is already a tough enough task to do safely

velvet summit
#

well, really it just requires some research or someone to tell you how to do it safely, though yeah some body shapes might not be as ideal for getting under a car with a regular jack

tranquil pebble
#

and if you do screw up with the jacks you can easily die

#

absolutely not worth the small money savings vs paying for a change

velvet summit
#

process of jacking the car is really just use the jack, put the jackstands under on each side, lower the jack, and push the car a few times to make sure it's stable

tranquil pebble
#

now changing an air filter I can do

tranquil pebble
velvet summit
#

honestly i've seen some people do it in the parking lot KEKW

tranquil pebble
#

certainly not going to do it in a parking lot or in the middle of the road

#

with how people drive, hell no

velvet summit
#

lmao

#

i have a gravel driveway so i borrow a neighbour's

tranquil pebble
#

Well, I am in literally no position to be able to safely do any of that.

velvet summit
#

💀

tranquil pebble
#

getting under the car is a no-go for me

velvet summit
#

ok fine, wheel changes are doable then
you dont have to get under the car for that

tranquil pebble
#

I probably could manage that with the right tools

velvet summit
#

you just need a breaker bar, the correct socket size, and a torque wrench, and a jack of some sort

tranquil pebble
#

Well, except ig getting the nuts off would require too much strength

velvet summit
#

break the bolts loose on the ground with the breaker bar, lift the car, remove the nuts, take the tire out, put the one you're changing in, and hand tight, lower car, and use torque wrench in a star pattern to secure the wheel

#

how good is your lifting strength

tranquil pebble
#

next to none

velvet summit
#

hmm

#

what's the maximum weight you can lift? or are you heavy enough to do it the opposite way and just push the bar down

tranquil pebble
#

I struggle at 50 lbs lifting

#

so safely probably around 30

velvet summit
#

30lb honestly probably should be enough with a decently long breaker bar
maybe with an additional cheater bar lmfao

tranquil pebble
#

regardless it would be hell for me to try that

velvet summit
#

though torquing it might be a bit more difficult, though you can use a cheater bar for it as well

#

for context, this is a breaker bar

tranquil pebble
#

I would absolutely require assistance in any case, not something I could do on my own

velvet summit
#

fair ig

tranquil pebble
#

and at that point I am better off paying for the service anyways

#

its stuff like air filter change though that is stupid to pay labor for

velvet summit
#

i mean, you could also do the considerably less effort but a bit louder method of using an impact driver to loosen the bolts, and also use it to tighten (not as recommended but alot of auto shops do it out of laziness) and then verify with a torque wrench lmao

tranquil pebble
#

I dont even know how to use such tools lol

velvet summit
#

it's like a drill

#

but with a hammer inside so you dont feel the torque as much

tranquil pebble
#

again, this is something I would need to be shown how to safely use

velvet summit
#

if you know how to use a drill, you should be able to use an impact

#

skill level, these tasks are very simple, and you could teach it to someone easily, but in terms of physical fitness to do them, yeah that's fair

tranquil pebble
#

I have a general idea but I have never used any kind of power tool before

storm narwhal
#

Its the uh

#

The stubby one

#

I think

velvet summit

the ones with enough torque ususally are about as big or even bigger than a drill

you guys quick question about monitors, if i get a 4k monitor a refresh rate isnt possible of more than 120 hz currently right? i mean realistically that you can get, no gpu besides the 4090 can present 120+ fps in 4k right?

mortal grail
#

4090 is kinda the only one that can fairly reliably do that ye

#

And since all gpus except the current gen radeon pro can only do ubr 40, and the radeon pro itself doing ubr56, no current gpus can really do anything higher than 4k144 native

#

Beyond that you need DSC

#

So really, most 4k240 monitors (if not all) use DSC to hit those numbers

#

Last I looked a couple months ago none of them were ubr80 spec

serene nacelle

wicked oriole

wicked oriole

Same answer

You'd need to use upscaling to go 120+

i was comparing and contrasting how cyberpunk looked at 2k on max setting vs it @60fps on my ps5. graphics looked visually noticable difference on the ps5 oddly
