silver sparrow
#

no like, do you have a baseline of every part to compare it to?

mortal grail
#

If the cheapest option is X, and I spend 10% more for Y, I have spent 10%

#

That simple

#

There's so much retail out there now it's more difficult to not achieve a more eye-catching result with mild overspending

worthy meteor
#

I find it more helpful to put a separate budget for aesthetics lol

silver sparrow
#

yeah but the cheapest option has features that the other item clearly lacks, and you have to take that into account tho

worthy meteor
#

make a good list and then spend the money on aesthetics

mortal grail
#

If it boils down purely to looks, 10% is my rule of thumb

mortal grail
#

Rational spending

silver sparrow
#

i kinda feel like that way of thinking is kinda odd. people usually dont want to just have something that just works, they want something that well works, but also they like the look of... espically if what they want is expensive

mortal grail
#

How old are you

silver sparrow
#

like why pay this much just to not like how it looks, sure its "cheap" but like are you truely happy with looking at what you bought everyday

#

23

mortal grail
#

Ok my frame of mind comes from someone more akin to 30's-40's

#

Many people when they're older want something that plain works most of all

#

Especially in old age

#

Function matters by far the most

#

When you're not exactly able bodied so to speak

silver sparrow
#

lets be honest there

mortal grail
#

You should know me by now that I target results better than that

#

And I'm always heavily value oriented

velvet summit
#

I care nothing about aesthetic as long as it's not outrageously bad looking

light egret
#

I have always built for function and low cost to power, the only thing I went out of my way for were rgb fans and they were cheap

mortal grail
#

It's also a culture thing

silver sparrow
#

i grew up dirt poor, and i never want to go back

mortal grail
#

Some cultures would want it to look like it's worth a million dollars

#

I'm not the kind that want it to look but not work

light egret
#

If you saw my PC in my highschool and post highschool days you'd think my PC was jank and I thought it was the coolest thing πŸ˜‚

mortal grail
#

But, I also don't have the luxury to mindlessly overspend on something to look cool either

#

I grew up penny pinching, so I'm pretty ingrained in the concept

light egret
#

same

mortal grail
#

As much as I have the hardware I do for a hobby

light egret
#

I have a lot of nice things, but thats from saving and finding good deals lol.

silver sparrow
#

i spent my entire life asking for things to basically never get it. if i have to say no to myself about that for the rest of my life id rather die

mortal grail
#

We're not saying no tho

#

We're compromising to something a little cheaper

#

Ofc if it's something like a hot pink stove top

#

Ofc not

velvet summit
#

Different priorities

mortal grail
#

But if I can save a few bucks not going with glass electric and having a nice enough natural gas top, then I'm fine with that personally

#

I'm pretty malleable

velvet summit
#

I got the cheapest induction stove (was a clearance sale)

mortal grail
#

I can live without most things as long as wherever I am is clean honestly

silver sparrow
# mortal grail We're compromising to something a little cheaper

imo it should be far more into suggesting, rather than compromising, if you can get someone to come down and be equal minded thats great. you can work with them on that, but i mean if they come in here clearly not budget minded, i think its a far better idea to suggest something thats equal in "why would you spend that much money on that" but its far cheaper or better to go for. going for things that are cheap is always nice, but i mean if someone made up their mind on something imo its not wise to badger them on it

mortal grail
#

I am genuinely seeing myself become more boomer by the month

velvet summit

#

Yeah I almost exclusively only buy things on sale

mortal grail

I've been pretty kind about it

#

And yet I keep coming back to people disruptive and frustrated about it

#

fair onyx
# idle nexus what was it??

Very long story short, it was a severe tensor allocation issue caused by some form of incompatibility across multiple programs that was causing severe ghost tensor allocations that we're effectively gaslighting my GPU into thinking it was out of memory. Cache wipes, driver resets, cuda reinstallations, programming installations, Windows core file repairs, none of it was able to do anything.

I used task manager, Nvidia SMI, Nvidia Nsight, and all of them would show that it had all of its memory available, but it would hit a certain threshold anywhere between 4 GB and 23 GB and say that it was out of memory, and it would be so convinced that it was out of memory that it would start purging all of my other programs to try and make more space, and it would sometimes even crash my GPU drivers or result in a BSOD because it purged too many core files

The solution for right now has been switching to a different LLM loader, however the one that I'm using now also used to give me the exact same problem, but it's been rock solid without any problem sense. It's less ideal than the one that I've been using, but I opened a huge error report on their repository detailing all the problems I've been having

velvet summit
#

only useful if you plan to edit it in lightroom or equivalent

light egret
#

that didn't look very short

#

I'm joking

velvet summit
#

long story long: message too long

idle nexus
fair onyx
# light egret that didn't look very short

Considering this issue's been happening for a month and a half, and I've had over three dozen blue screens of deaths, seven different DDU uses, over 20 different program reinstalls, and over 300 hours trying to solve this, it is a pretty short response. I've had at least a dozen different people trying to help me with this issue at the same time, and it's been an absolute nightmare

idle nexus
#

is there a workaround?

light egret
#

This is your dual GPU issue?

fair onyx
fair onyx
idle nexus
#

ya I dunno much about LLMs but that sounds like something they're doing wrong not you

fair onyx
#

Here, let me get the error report, so you can take a look at it if you want @idle nexus

There's a lot of information to go off of just how damn weird this issue is, but if you ever see anybody with an issue like this again, you can at least let them know that it's likely program-based

https://github.com/theroyallab/tabbyAPI/issues/187

GitHub

OS Windows GPU Library CUDA 12.x Python version 3.11 Describe the bug I have been dealing with this issue for a while. A brief synopsis is as follows: When loading things into VRAM on my GPU, I can...

light egret
#

Oh wow. but it followed through multiple builds didn't it? So is it through incompatibilites in programs you absolutelyt need?

idle nexus
#

try to find a way to pretend the LLM is a game & nexusmods will somehow fix it in like 24 hours lol

idle nexus
fair onyx
# light egret Oh wow. but it followed through multiple builds didn't it? So is it through inco...

I honestly have absolutely no idea what specifically is causing it, but it is only happening now when I use Tabby. I used to use a different loader called ooba booga, and it used the exact same back end called EXL2, which is a LLM to C++ converter that runs several times faster on Nvidia, and it too used to give me the exact same problem, so I thought it was an EXL2 problem

But, it works completely flawlessly in oobabooga now, for dozens of model re-loads, and I can't even do it once in tabby. I've wiped all of its caches, reinstalled from source, reinstalled on a different drive, reinstalled with entirely different permissions and files, and every single installation of tabby will work for one load, and then blue screen of death

fair onyx
#

If you read through that whole long write-up that I made, a friend and I even worked on code that could ghost allocate tensors across my GPU in order to stress test it at dozens of different capacities, and it never had a single problem all the way up to 23.7 GB.

And the additionally weird thing that made me realize that it had to be the program was that I could have a OOM at 12 GB in Tabby, load a dummy tensor to 13 GB, and then load a small LLM just fine. So it's not a problem with it being at 12 GB, because then I would be at like 19 GB. But if I cleared that dummy tensor and tried to load a 12 GB again, it would OOM

#

There's so much to the issue, that write up is barely even half of the crap that I tried honestly

idle nexus
#

does the application tab in Event Viewer tell you anything useful?

fair onyx
#

So, fun thing about that

idle nexus
#

mine is telling me that Adobe Acrobat DC is very mad I changed its services start from Auto to manual lol

fair onyx
#

I had driver crashes that were so severe that my DGPU and I GPU disconnected, and event viewer literally stopped functioning

idle nexus
#

damn

#

it's kinda crazy the program has enough privileges to kill critical system tasks

fair onyx
fair onyx
idle nexus
#

maybe it's one of those like dividing by zero errors

fair onyx
#

Who knows honestly...

I do know that every time I would have a consecutive OOM, my VRAM capacity would go lower and lower. That's also detailed in that error report I made

#

Highly recommend you take a look at the error report, it goes over so many different things I tried, and so many weird behaviors I found

velvet summit
fair onyx
mortal grail
#

If you can repeat this behaviour then yeah I think you might have hit the nail on the head

idle nexus
#

on an unrelated note, my 12100F kinda sucks

mortal grail
idle nexus
#

what was the nvidia program you used?

mortal grail
#

?

fair onyx
# mortal grail This is ur issue from the other day right

Yeah, that's a small section from the post that I made detailing a bug report for the program that I use. I've spent so much goddamn time trying to figure out what's going on here. I'm just happy to know that it's for sure not a hardware problem, considering I'm using the exact same back end loader in a different program consistently with no problems. The weird thing is, This secondary program that used the same back end did used to give me BSODs, but it's not anymore...

fair onyx
idle nexus
#

did I misunderstand that sorry

mortal grail
#

Which one were you asking lol

fair onyx
#

I used Nvidia SMI for command line viewing, and I used Nvidia Nsight with a GPU VRAM tracker and availability tracker to live log

mortal grail
#

Ooo that's pretty smart

fair onyx
#

Every capacity and availability measure I used said that I had exactly as much as was being reported used, and exactly as much was remaining available, even though it would still tell me that I was out of memory, and it would physically become impossible to load any more into my VRAM without closing the program

idle nexus
#

ah rightI wrote that down

#

nvidiai-smi.exe on elevated cmd

fair onyx
#

Like if I OOM'd at 12GB and tried to load 1GB more, it would literally just say "no" while everything capable of measuring my capacity would say I could easily do it

#

If I OOM'd in tabby, My entire computer would lose access to loading anything additional into VRAM until I closed it

idle nexus
#

you might benefit from downloading nvidia inspector & messing with driver settings you can't usually get to

mortal grail
fair onyx
#

Maybe, yeah. The developer of EXL2, the back end of that I'm using to load these models responded to my bug report, so I'll be getting back to him pretty soon

mortal grail
surreal kernel
#

any professional minecrafters here

mortal grail
#

So therefore you see no loaded vram, but it's partitioned, like an ssd, and can't be accessed by the other programs

surreal kernel
#

can someone explain what happened here

surreal kernel
fair onyx
# mortal grail This is very interesting, maybe each of these programs create like a container s...

This is basically exactly what I saw from two completely unrelated bug reports on different GitHubs.

They said essentially exactly that. They referred to them as ghost allocations, which could compound when the program forgets to close its own allocations, and thus loses the ability to close them later down the line.

Essentially, it's an allocation that is only accessible and viewable by the GPU, to where any program on the OS can't even see it, but it is there, and it will cause problems

mortal grail
#

Yeah, it sounds like a reasonable explanation

fair onyx
#

And it makes 100% sense, when I had four OOM errors before BSOD, each one after the other OMed at lower and lower capacity, showing that more and more of these allocations were compounding

#

I also found that just restarting my computer usually wouldn't do anything, but if I fully shut it down and then pulled the power plug and put it back in, then it would work. It's almost like the ghost allocations were persisting even through restarts because the computer never lost power, so the VRAM continued to persist

Tbh you dont need wifi 7 unless you need high speed local transfers

sour smelt

I am just asking because I am planning on making a new build, so I was curious when I noticed that some of the intel boards have wif 7 and the amd ones did not on Newegg.

#

with that gigabyte being the exception. It's not something I would get in a heartbeart for that price. lol

sweet sun
#

also it was just an example

elfin mural

wifi 7 is redundant unless you have a router with wifi 7

and an internet fast enough

sour smelt
sweet sun

elfin mural

do you plan to buy a wifi 7 router anytime soon?

a lot of devices are actually still on ac and ax, 5 and 6

sweet sun

i only have wifi 6 ;(

sour smelt
elfin mural

sweet sun

elfin mural

amd boards use mediatek wifi a lot of the time

sour smelt

either that or your wifi card

yeah

#

it's just draft spec rn

velvet summit
#

somewhat unlikely for it to be changed significantly between now and the time it is finalized, but still better to wait till it is imo

#

should be finished by end of 2024

elfin mural
#

i think you need a new router

velvet summit
#

depending on your house, you also may need more APs

#

concrete walls attenuate RF signals way more than drywall

#

if your house has concrete walls

#

plaster as well

sour smelt
# sweet sun perry why not wired

Some of my devices are wired like the family TV, printer, and family PC, but it looks like either my ISP or my modem/router is the issue here. The internet connection consistently cuts out for the whole house every now and then.

velvet summit
#

ah

#

yeah that's the isp's issue more likely

#

or an outdated modem

#

if your modem is like 20 years old, it's probably time to change it

if it's less than 5 years old, it's probably just the isp

And I am like a few centimeters from my pc

copper fable

Using this adapter is expectionally good for how bad it is... it is kinda but not really playable...

#

But that's probably because I'm very close

velvet summit

do you live in the city? or rural? because in the city, there's more likelyhood of there being interference on the 2.4ghz spectrum

velvet summit

xbox controller would be used closer to the adapter though

or i would assume

copper fable
