Like just cameras? Get a Reolink if you want the easy route. I think for us it was like $600 (after parts and installation labor). It could've been maybe $300 if you bought the system and did it yourself. Also no subscription required and feels close to a self-hosted solution

If you have a spare computer, put Linux and Docker on it, Motion Eye OS onto Docker, get a few cameras, connect the cameras to the Motion Eye OS installation, also include Tailscale, and now you have a secured self-hosted solution that costs maybe $200 for just the cameras

But yeah there's probably other stuff you'd need than just cameras

We had a guy come by to diagnose our alarm system. I think he quoted like $2500. We have our alarm through Xfinity, so we called them and they helped us troubleshoot the issue ourselves. CS said that since we've changed ISPs (we switched to AT&T, and yes we still use the Xfinity alarm system), we'd just have to reconnect it to the Wi-Fi (which is weird because I've already switched the SSID and password to the old SSID and password on the new router, so it theoretically should've just worked lol). But that's all we had to do and it was completely free about an hour of trying to get CS or a representative from Xfinity
