Rip

rancid juniper

xfinity

hoary zodiac

Would be better off with a 5G router at that point

#

They're actually pretty good if the plans are cheap

rancid juniper

currently my parents are still with the 50mbps $10 plan

misty sparrow
#

yeah of course they’re bad speeds they aren’t Xfinity, it’s actually Xfinite

rancid juniper

💀

hoary zodiac
#

I lived off one for a bit

worthy meteor

They give us like 300/20 for $30 a month iirc, gotta switch services for any better upload

misty sparrow

At least they’re not Cox

worthy meteor
#

The upload sucks a lot

misty sparrow

If you look at Cox they have data caps on internet usage

#

2TB I think

worthy meteor
#

The price is decent though

hoary zodiac

Lol

#

You guys should see the "6"/1 plan I had

rancid juniper
#

can you actually negotiate with your isp for better prices?

hoary zodiac

Back in 2020

rancid juniper

hmmm

idle nexus
#

I don't think it'll run higher than like 5500mhz ish

#

well it won't run 5700mhz actually

#

I just realized that ycruncher was at 5661mhz

#

153mhz bclk ftw

#

what's odd is the ring ratio max is 33x which at 153mhhz bclk is 5049mhz

#

yet if I leave it on auto, it runs at 5202

#

go figure

#

heck I"m gonna run core ratio on auto & see what it does lol

rancid juniper
#

I run my bclk at fixed speeds (100mhz)

#

No decimals, just fixed number

#

I despised the 99.87

idle nexus
#

there's no reason to run it higher unless your core ratios are locked

rancid juniper
#

Ye

idle nexus

lol I haaaaaaaated that on 5900x

#

if you run on cmd: bcedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off

it stays at 100mhz all the time

#

no idea why

but it does

rancid juniper
#

I set mines locked via bios

#

Everything kept me satisfied thus far

idle nexus
#

BIOS is ignoring me rn

rancid juniper

Lol rip

idle nexus

I had 101mhz set for bclk but it's at 100mhz

probably better tho cuz I dunno if this memory controller can handle anything past 3200

idle nexus

there's a waterblock for memory trying very hard to block my picture

light egret
#

moving away from microcenter is one of my biggest regrets sad_pepe

#

for memory? like memory on the gpu?

#

don't gpu waterblocks usually cover the whole thing?

idle nexus
#

here's more zoomed out to hopefully help it make sense

light egret
#

wait you watercooled your ram?

idle nexus
#

yes. yes I did

light egret
#

lmao

#

why

idle nexus
#

but that's not my daily PC

#

that's the PC on the floor to the right of me I almost never use lol

vale hedge
#

I got a 7900 xtx and 7800x3d build at microcenter for 1350derpyBlob

light egret
#

microcenter is where I got like all of my parts. They were at or under msrp and lower than every where else at the time.

idle nexus
#

well that's running dual rank bdie at, eh, I think 4400c16? maybe...? I forget but anyway, water cooling helps when it's running like 1.65v or something

#

my daily has watercooled memory

#

my daily before that has watercooled memory

light egret
#

what do you do on your pc that requires you to watercool your ram

idle nexus
#

my bench setup uses watercooled memory

light egret
#

like OC sure, but OC for what

idle nexus
#

I run 6400c28 for daily lol

light egret
#

iunno what that means

idle nexus
#

still not sure if that's a bug with HWiNFO or this board just does what it wants

light egret
#

is that saying your mem speeds are 3200?

idle nexus
#

technically yes

#

because DDR is dual data rate or something

light egret
#

on ddr5?

idle nexus
#

so when your XMP is, for example, 6000c28, technically it's running two 3000s

light egret
#

oh ok so each ram stick is running 6400?

idle nexus
#

each is running 6400 but mroe like each is running 3200+3200

light egret
#

and if mine is 3200 then each stick would be 1600x2?

idle nexus
#

yes

light egret
#

ok

rancid juniper
light egret
#

I was lost cause my ddr4 is 3200 and I was like how tf is your ddr5 OC at 3200 lmao

light egret
rancid juniper
light egret
#

im so glad I moved further inland tho lol

idle nexus
#

then to add another level of confusing, you can run higher frequency if the CPU's memory clock runs at half the speed of the memory frequency

rancid juniper
#

bro that hurricane spawned out of nowhere tbh

#

i didn't catch up with the weather forecast

light egret
#

That's pretty normal for the gulf

idle nexus
#

or you can synchronize the memory clock with the frequency which runs faster compared to 2:1

light egret
#

texas and florida get bombarded with hurricanes out of nowhere frequently

rancid juniper
#

Florida dodged so many tho

#

last i remember was hurricane Irma

light egret
idle nexus
#

so, counterintuitively, running:
(a) 6400 at 1:1 is faster than
(b) 7400 at 2:1

light egret
#

ok so I'm running an r5 2600. It's speed is 3.4 GHz. How does that compare to my ram at 3200?

rancid juniper
#

3600mhz for me

#

CL16

#

very small tuning

light egret
#

ider what CL mine is

idle nexus
#

in (a) memory controller runs at 3200 & in (b) 1850mhz I think? I'm confused now too lmao

#

tCL is CAS latency

#

Column Address Strobe

#

lol

light egret
#

wait but you're not allowed to be confused. How am I supposed to learn? 😂

idle nexus
#

that's about the outer limits of what I know ngl.

#

I've seen it presented as almost like an excel sheet

light egret
#

ok mine is CL16

idle nexus
#

& inside the like rectangles are the places where the information is stored

light egret
#

you talking about the mem chips? like the black chips on the stick?

idle nexus
#

Column Address Strobe addresses like from the top & tRAS (Row Address Strobe) addresses from the sides

light egret
#

i dont think I know what you're saying anymore lol

#

I'm trying so hard to learn all this PC stuff but it gets so complicated.

rancid juniper
#

i wonder if i should tweak my tras down a bit

#

probably not worth it

light egret
#

how do you do that and what are the possible ramifications

rancid juniper
#

oh man where do i start

#

you tweak timings via bios or software (bios is highly recommended)

idle nexus
#

something like this?

rancid juniper
#

the issues is that it can present system instability if you're not careful

#

ram tweaking/oc takes alot of time

#

its best to do it one by one so you can figure out what the culprit is if you ever stumble upon instability

idle nexus
#

certain timings have to fit within other timings

rancid juniper
#

ggood will explain further

light egret
#

I mean I just don't see the point in OCing RAM outside of enabling XMP profiles. Ram instability can be catastrophic can't it?

#

and how much more power can you expect to get out of ram?

idle nexus
light egret
#

is tCL the same as CL

idle nexus
#

yes

#

the lower case t stands for timing or tick I can't remember tbh lol

light egret
#

ok but CL is 16, + tRAS is 36, but my tRC is 73?

idle nexus
#

16+38+2

light egret
#

which is 54

#

wait where did you get 38

idle nexus
#

works here lol

light egret
#

this is mine lol

idle nexus
#

AMD & Intel controllers work a little different. Like AMD has tRDRDSC_L & tWRWRSC_L & those timings don't exist on Intel

light egret
#

@rancid juniper what cpu you got

#

I also don't know what those acronyms are lol

idle nexus
#

I mean, the timings exist but they're named differently

#

they seem complicated but if they're usually just acronyms of what they do

light egret
#

the problem I have is all my timings end in even numbers but the tRC is odd

idle nexus
#

like tRDRDSC_L is timing read-to-read delay same channel or something like that lol

#

just to be clear btw, I've spent a lot of time messing with these things, but I am nowhere near an expert or able to understand it

#

to me at least, people who understand this totally, their brains work different than most people lol

rancid juniper
light egret
#

Its all good

#

alright so that checks lol

#

I do have amd

rancid juniper
#

can't save em

light egret
#

ok so i'm assuming here it would be the CL+ RAS to CAS + tRAS to get the tRC?

#

but my tRC on the other page is still 73, one higher HyperThinkRotate

idle nexus
#

when I've overclocked memory on AMD, usually tRP + tRAS works for tRC

#

I don't think that's necessarily a requirement but it's usually stable lol

#

some timings don't need to follow a formula necessarily

light egret
#

ok so is mine being at 73 just weird?

idle nexus
#

only that it's the minimum

light egret
#

cause that forumla would get me to 72 too, but my tRC is 73

#

idk if this might be it but I probably played around with OCing it a while back but I don't remember what all I played around with.

idle nexus
#

so if like tRP + tRAS < tRC, it'll be okay within reason

light egret
#

I know I OCd my CPU and GPU at one point

#

but like, just barely.

#

cause stock coolers and all

idle nexus
light egret
#

holy moly that sure is a lot of text.

idle nexus
#

since you're on AMD, there's an extra dimension to it

#

I believe it's because of the chiplet design

#

there's what's called the "infinity fabirc" that connects the chiplets together

light egret
#

wait lemme ask you a question

idle nexus
#

which is also called "FCLK"

light egret
#

if I have ddr4 3200 cl16 ram, but I only run 1 stick, is it only running at 1600? or is the double thing inside of each ram stick?

idle nexus
#

if you're on Zen 2, & running 1800mhz FCLK, you're already doing well cuz I think that's about the highest it usually runs

idle nexus
light egret
#

ok that's what I thought. I was reading the link you sent and something stuck out to me to make me think i might have had it wrong lol

idle nexus
#

on like most consumer CPUs, memory only runs two channels

#

confusingly, even with 4 places to put RAM sticks ("DIMMs") on the motherboard

light egret
#

nah that's always made sense to me. Cause each channel is labled by the A and B

idle nexus
#

I think even AMD Threadripper is dual channel

#

incentive to buy EPYC lol

#

or maybe newer ones have more channels

#

I forget

light egret
#

how do I know if my mobo has a daisy chained mobo or T-topology mobo?

idle nexus
#

tbh I never quite understood how to find out

#

but are you using 4 DIMMs?

light egret
#

nahhh

idle nexus
#

cuz it doesn't really matter otherwise

light egret
#

im to broke for that

#

im not actually gonna try to OC my ram I'm just trying to learn lol

idle nexus
#

if you're using 2/4 DIMM slots, it won't be of concern lol

light egret
#

According to Buildzoid, Daisy Chain vs. T-Topology only matters above DDR4-4000. Following Buildzoid's logic, if you're on Ryzen 3000 or 5000, this doesn't matter as DDR4-3800 is the typical max memory frequency when running MCLK:FCLK 1:1.
ah.

#

Alright I'm off to put some sand under my pillow

idle nexus
#

because memory overclocking can really bork Windows

light egret
#

Yeah I'm not gonna risk my windows install lol

idle nexus
#

lol ya it's better not to use your overclocked memory on your daily windows until it's passed lots of stability tests on a throwaway windows lol

#

if you did decide to OC memory, you have to figure out which ICs (the little square black things on the memory) are

#

because they behave differently

#

like you can blast Samsung bdie with voltage & it'll be fine unless it gets too hot (hence watercooling)

#

but you can damage Samsung cdie if you give it too much voltage & it even starts to scale negatively above 1.35v iirc

#

what does your CPU-Z say in the "SPD" tab next to "DRAM Manuf."?

Anyone ever do dishwasher steak?

#

Apparently a dishwasher gets hot enough to sous vide a steak before searing

hoary zodiac
#

makes sense

#

It probably needs to get that hot to kill all the germs

velvet summit
#

not to kill all the germs exactly; though it also does that

#

it makes the water quite hot so the enzymes and soap in the dishwasher detergent work more effectively

#

if you have a sanitize option, then it will use very hot water to kill all the germs

hoary zodiac
#

interesting

velvet summit
#

hotter water makes grease and other particles softer and easier to fall off

#

dishwashers dont quite rely on water pressure (only a little bit) to get rid of the food particles

#

the cleaning is done by the heat + detergents

#

also it reuses the same water (in a single cycle) for a while, so the detergent can do its magic

#

generally, the dishwasher cycle goes prewash; cleans off all the easily soluble food particles (tip: if you use powder detergent, add a little bit more in the washer before you start, so you get a little bit of soap to start the prewash
main cleaning cycle; detergent drawer opens, and the dishes are washed with the same water for maybe like 40 minutes
rinsing cycles; gets rid of all the detergents, there may be like 3 cycles
(optional) sanitizing cycle; uses very hot water to kill off all the germs, this cycle could be on the rinse cycles or the cleaning cycle
(optional) heat dry cycle; basically a hair dryer for your plates, though not really recommended since it just uses power with not too much benefit; you should just open the dishwasher door once the last rinse cycle finishes so that the water steams off fast, and that generally gets all your plates dry without the heat dry cycle

#

also for north americans, make sure to run the hot water on your sink till it gets hot before you run the dishwasher, because we only have 120v and heating water requires alot of power, so the dishwasher expects hot water to be fed in

#

and you should use the rinse aid

#

it's a surfactent to help water slide off your glassware so you dont get water spots on them after the rinsing cycles

#

also for home dishwashers, dont rinse your dishes before loading them into the dishwasher

#

use a butter knife or a fork or something to just scrape off the large chunks into the food waste bin, then just load the dishes into the dishwasher

tranquil pebble

I have acquired a handheld SNES player and it turns out all my Japanese Super Famicom games are functioning like new

#

also snes on the go is nice

opaque sedge
#

So typically top mounted fans are exhaust

#

But i was wondering if u can make them intake fans

velvet summit
#

yeah

random osprey
#

you can but typically you dont want to as you want to exhaust the hot air and also the top typically isnt designed to filter out dust as good

velvet summit
#

the top is a collection point for dust as well

#

so you might be sucking in more dust potentially

opaque sedge
#

Also i had a thought, can aio’s technically improve gpu temps? Since ur using an aio to cool the cpu, theres a lot of emty space in the case for the gpu heat to travel and escape right?

velvet summit
#

at least on my system, despite it being slightly exhaust (case is slightly more positively pressured) there's still a bit of a dust layer on top of my case

random osprey
velvet summit
random osprey
#

but there are aios for gpus

velvet summit
#

assuming you dont have it vertically mounted

opaque sedge
#

The entire thought about top mounted fans being potentially intakes came when i noticed the mesh cover lol

velvet summit
#

personally i just leave them as passive, since my front panel brings in enough air for it to be positively pressured

#

negative pressure tends to get dust into the cracks of the case

opaque sedge
velvet summit
#

underside as in where the fans are

#

they suck in, blow right into the heatsink, and out the sides

opaque sedge
#

Also does the gpu suck in air from the back?

#

My inside of the pc has gotten strangely dusty

velvet summit
#

it shouldnt

#

if anything, it should be blowing out

velvet summit
opaque sedge
velvet summit
#

negative pressure generally occurs if you have more exhaust cfm than the intake

opaque sedge
#

Can i make mine more positively pressured?

velvet summit
#

oh

#

you have a solid front panel

#

in that case, honestly a top intake isnt the worst idea, because at least that is filtered

#

you could always add more filter material (e.g. filter floss) if you want to get rid of even more dust, though it wont be as pretty

opaque sedge
velvet summit
#

damn

#

3 weeks in a closed pc

#

this is like open air test bench levels of dust

opaque sedge
#

It was

#

Half as dusty

velvet summit
#

what were your differences in score with and without the side panel on?

#

i wonder how choked for thermals are you with your solid front panel

#

also im just assuming it's solid front because you have the side intakes there

light egret
#

It looks like it has side vents to me. If that is on both sides I don't think it'd choke that much

velvet summit
#

should be better than the h510 at least lmfao

light egret
#

As long as there isn't also another filter under that front panel

opaque sedge
light egret
#

How many front fans do you have

opaque sedge
#

Two

velvet summit
#

then you dont have to worry about it too much.... though i highly suspect that your rear fan might have a higher cfm exhaust than the intake fans

#

oh yeah definitely then

opaque sedge
light egret
#

Personally I'd make sure to have 3 front fans as intake, then I do the rear fan and then my top plate has my aio with 2 out fans

velvet summit
#

i wonder how well or bad a setup with 0 exhaust and 3 intake on the front panel would do

light egret
#

I have about the same amount of dust but after like 4 years

#

I think it'd be fine

velvet summit
#

this should reduce your dust

#

though has the potential of lowering performance

light egret
#

The air is gonna find a way to escape regardless as long as you have the fans pulling air in and pushing that fresh air over your components, so I don't really see the need for the exhaust fans if the intake is adequate. The exhaust fans just help expell that air a bit faster

opaque sedge
#

I’m looking at fan headers and trying to figure out which one was which

velvet summit
#

the header near the left top of the mobo is usually fan1

light egret
#

I think I have all my fans set to max at all times lol. Don't recommend that tho

velvet summit
#

probably better than setting the fan speed via cpu temp for gaming pcs

#

because your gpu is more likely to be hot than your cpu

#

but most mobos dont have gpu controlled fan speeds

#

you can do it with uhhhh

#

fancontrol or whatever the software was

#

lemme check

#

yeah fancontrol

opaque sedge
light egret
#

Yeah but if you got cheapo fans, leaving em at Max all the time will wear em out faster and they'll start making noises which will make you think you're hdds are going out

opaque sedge
light egret
#

That curve looks fine

opaque sedge
light egret
#

I mean if you're really worried about dust getting in, get a set of 3 good fans for front, move the 2 front to top as exhaust. You'll still get dust but it will prob help

#

But also is your PC on the floor

rancid juniper
opaque sedge
opaque sedge
#

Nothing else to add…

light egret
#

Ok. I mean you're gonna get dust in your PC no matter what. The amount of dust in there is probably due to running PC with door off and having dust in the room. Just keep an eye on it and clean it every 6 months or so.

opaque sedge
#

What do i use to clean it? A cloth?

sour falcon
#

RAHHHHHHHHH

sour falcon
#

thats what i use, a really soft toothbrush

opaque sedge
light egret
#

You can use can of compressed air or one of those electric blowers you can buy on Amazon, and then you can use a cloth with rubbing alcohol if you want it to be perfect. Don't use a cloth on the PC components unless it is a fine microfiber cloth, even then be careful cause it can snag on things. Toothbrush works well for the mobo and stuff

#

I use tooth brush all the time lol

sour falcon
opaque sedge
light egret
#

Don't like scrub hard or anything

#

Just lightly with rubbing alcohol

opaque sedge

thats about what mine it

light egret

The default settings on a lot of these are going to be good for the most part. These things were designed by people much smarter than us

sour falcon

set it like this, works fine aside from the case fans since one has a weird habit

light egret
#

What's the weird habit

sour falcon
#

i believe its the middle fan itll start buzzing at high temp and speed

light egret

Eh it's prob fine lol. All of my fans are buzzing

its fine when the pc is cool but when it warms up it is LOUD

Are noctua fans expensive? Kind of scared to look ever since i saw that 100 buck air cooler on microcenter

uh what's going on there

sour falcon

Built in cheese grater

sour falcon
opaque sedge
idle nexus

where is it mounted?

#

case or GPU fan?

sour falcon
#

Top of the pc

idle nexus
#

get some washers & use them to build them out a bit

sour falcon
#

Case fan I’ve already checked for obstructions

opaque sedge
# sour falcon

This reminds me i need to get a controller to play elden ring

sour falcon
#

There’s nothing in the fans 😭

idle nexus
#

at high RPM they can clip sometimes

#

I had it happen with slim fans a couple times

opaque sedge
sour falcon
idle nexus
#

wait but... if they're on the top of the PC, usually you'd want them as exhaust fans so the frame would face the metal

sour falcon
#

And it only does it when it’s hot

sour falcon
idle nexus
#

I put top fans as intake before just cuz it looked better lol

sour falcon
#

Same, mines worse since I’m skinny

sour falcon
opaque sedge
idle nexus
#

use washers to lower them slightly

#

I mean they're clipping by like 1/128" probably lol

sour falcon
#

My bony ass filanges

Yeah it’s pretty bad

idle nexus

which case?

sour falcon
sour falcon
opaque sedge
#

Elden ring as well?

idle nexus
#

whoa this case is tiny as heck

sour falcon
sour falcon
idle nexus
#

uh what the heck could it even be clipping?

sour falcon
idle nexus
#

maybe the cross bars

sour falcon
#

Nope

idle nexus
#

not that?

sour falcon
#

The cross area are out of the way

idle nexus
#

oh ya that's raised

sour falcon
#

Here gimme a sec I’ll get a photo

idle nexus
#

so probably

sour falcon
#

Wouldn’t surprise me

idle nexus
#

but either way, you can't even see into the top of that case without like a flashlight so use like 1-3 washers per screw to lower the fans away from metal

#

ig you had to use those self-tapping screws since there's nowhere a machine screw could screw into the metal

#

you might even get away with unscrewing the screws like a quarter or half turn

#

but you don't want vibration either

sour falcon
#

oh its the end fan

#

slowwed it down and it went away

idle nexus
sour falcon
idle nexus
#

could install those on top of the fan to lower it slightly & not worry about vibration if you don't wanna use washers

sour falcon
#

its what i thought it was

opaque sedge
idle nexus
#

is it all three or just one of them?

sour falcon
#

squeezed the sides and it went way

sour falcon
idle nexus
#

my guess is the case assumes you'll use the top as exhaust

sour falcon
idle nexus
#

loosen the screws like a quarter turn just for the heck of it lol

#

can you tell where it's hitting?

sour falcon
#

i probably tightened the fan weird

idle nexus
#

maybe it is that cross brace thing

#

it goes right up to the housing?

sour falcon
#

nah, its the casing

#

no theres like 1mm of a gap above it

opaque sedge
#

Is it hitting those bridges?

sour falcon
#

no

#

its the casing

idle nexus
#

you'd have to check the one opposite of that back one that's not visible in the photo

opaque sedge
sour falcon
#

mhm

opaque sedge
idle nexus
#

if it is the cross brace, you could take some channellocks or something & just bend it out even

sour falcon
#

Ignore the dust

#

There’s plenty of space above it

idle nexus
#

oh heck the other one looked closer

#

is there a rear fan?

sour falcon
#

lemme get a flashlight

idle nexus
#

wow that case is tiiight

#

so the GPU & those two big fans sit right by the perforations to pull air into the case

#

you might be better off with the fans flipped anyway

#

cuz rn it seems like you have like a really positive pressure situation

sour falcon
idle nexus
#

like your PSU is your only exhaust or something

sour falcon
#

That fan is the one being noise

#

4 exhaust and 4 intake

idle nexus
#

& if the fans try to push air into the case but the air in the case isn't being exhausted, it'll resist the air coming in

#

oh heck where are the exhaust?

sour falcon
#

PSU and the 3 fans are intake and the aio and gpu are exhaust

idle nexus
#

GPU should pull air onto itself then blow it out the back by the PCIe ports. I think newer GPUs do flow through

#

PSU is going to pull air into the PSU housing then blow it out the back where the cable connects

sour falcon
#

huhhhhhhhh

idle nexus
#

iirc you want slighly positive pressure because it builds up dust less

sour falcon
#

the airflow in this is weird

#

ill just keep doing what i normally do lol

misty sparrow

alright i finished a geekbench benchmark, looks average though

the psu takes care of itself

sour falcon

exhaust

#

aio and gpu are exhaust

idle nexus
#

those 140s are exhaust? lol

sour falcon
#

no

#

theyre 2 120's

#

the case came with 140's that i didnt use

idle nexus
#

oh they looked like 140s in the pictures on fractal website lol

#

ah okay

sour falcon
#

the aio and the 2 120's are exhaust

sour falcon
idle nexus
#

lol oh ya I forgot you put an AIO my bad

sour falcon
#

yur, all good

idle nexus
#

blue thing is PSU lol that goes there right?

#

& this is how GPU would work (kinda?)

idle nexus
#

do intakes fit here?

storm narwhal
idle nexus

I wonder why they say only 2 120s or 140s fit on top... who the heck uses 80mm fans?
