Windows isn't recognizing my hdd anymore
It's plugged in, I checked that
So is the power cable
I doubt it died, I can feel the disc moving in it
Restart Windows
Trying rhat rn
It actually might not be fully plugged into the mobo, looking at it again
There's a cable in the way
Nope it's plugged in all the eay
Restart didn't fix it
Nah
It was working for a while
And its not showing up in disk management
fairly sure the sata slot is dead
which is great, since i dont have another sata slot
@sour wadi wanna know how stupid I am?
Apparently I unplugged the power cable connector from the psu somehow
im very intelligent
i require the assistance of a External HDD WD professional š
.....?
how bad is 100% active time on a HDD right after boot?
mechanical hdd with windows? literally expected.
Are you booting off a hard drive
I haven't switched over to the 970 evo
laziness and too much work
However I'm thinking about wiping my pc and getting my brother to install windows 10 on the ssd
bruh itās an ssd, it takes like 5 seconds to connect lol
no
even an nvme takes more time
yes
ok record urself taking off the side panel, installing the ssd and put back the side panel and closing the side panel again
you really think slotting in an m.2 (970 evo) doesnāt take more than 5 seconds
likeā¦what?
iām not doing all that for your pleasure cause of your ignorance
Clearly gonna take a few minutes then you gotta move the windows from hdd to ssd or faster way reinstalled windows on ssd
Moving windows takes an hour or 2
no balls
well when you move windows sure
i was talking about connecting it.
which is likeā¦the first step, obviously (btw iām not home i canāt)
Well it'll take about a minute anyway lol
it takes more than 5 seconds to get access to an m.2 slot
lmfao
side panels are a thing
Gotta account about 5 minutes to find the m.2 screw if it didn't come preinstalled in your board too xD
and like 10 to find sata data and power cables if sata ssd
Just have non modular psu
uggy
I love that new psu has 4 sata power plugs on one cable instead of the 3 that my last psu had
I need only 1 sata power cable now
Your last one only had 3? Pretty sure my evga w1 had 4 on 1 sata cable lol
to be fair it was a crap unit
If you're just talking about connecting it, maybe
But that's a silly thing to talk about for how long it takes to install
I had a w1 that is a crap unit lol but tbh did me just fine
was it a d tier gigabyte
Low priority d tier evga
@minor sun hi i think you helped me before with my pc build
What're you looking for help with?
my hdd is acting up, and it has a usbsecurity lock on it, and overtime the drive, when i knew was not gonna work, just stopped working, piror to it not being accessible i was pulling files from it off
Can you use the pc at all?
it's an external HDD mb
If so in the windows search bar type command, right click on the command prompt thing that pops up and click run as administrator
i can access my pc just fine
after plugging it in a few times, have to disconnect and reconnect a few times whenever i turn on my pc
Do this and once it opens type" sfc/scannow (letter of drive)" I believe is the command
No spaces
i can access the program that's used to to unlock my file
Do this if you can, if that doesn't work idk what to do
Basically it will scan the drive for corrupt files and repair them
If that's not your issue it could be the cable is broken ig
Or the hdd is just dying
tried another cable and same issue
this issue started because i downlaoded a windows update, and forgot to unplug it, but :/
Why do you have to unplug it for windows updates?
then my computer went haywire with perofmrance hits and shit, so i did a clean install, and now it's giving me this "drive is not accessible" error
i dunno it's what my friends told me to do when i do an update, didn't make any sense to me, since it's my m.2 getting cleared, not my HDD
Check if it's registering in disk management
yeah, it's in there
Looks to be formatted properly
I think anyways
I'm not sure, windows is probably blocking it for some reason but I have no clue
Sorry I couldn't help
so the rive has a lock called USBsecurity check that it normally goes through when i plug in my drive, and it was working for 3-4 years until a couple weeks ago
tried on another computer and same issue occured
it's all good man lol
well yes ofc, it was a silly statement, and itās purpose was to reassure that they didnāt need to be THAT lazy cause it doesnāt take long
anyone have a decent 2tb hdd? prolly not buying soon, just as a refernce point for my SO when they need more storage in the future
WD Blue and Seagate Barracuda both have 2TB 7200 RPM options, they're around $45-50
ah, thought there would be specific drives that are better than others like ssds, ty
No, there's just a couple to avoid and they're pretty obvious. Usually no-name and generic labels.
cool thanks
Technically there's HDDs that perform better than others but it doesn't make a difference when just used as storage, maybe if it was a game drive or workstation.
So just trying to understand this, I can buy a micro sd card and then format it properly through windows to hold applications and such, correct?
so the micro sd card would work like a second ssd
You could, but it'd be slow
I mean yes but why
Just use an external drive
I was hoping an sd card would be faster
that and I don't have one
I got a 2tb drive from Seagate for 40$
Look around on black Friday and cyber Monday, I'm sure you can find something for 20$ or smthn
thanks, I don't need too much storage and I don't need it to be fast, but I'm coming to that point where 500 gigs isn't enough for my laptop
1tb and 2tb ehdds prolly cost about the same
a good m.2 storage device?
What budget
You want a 500gb drive?
at least a tb
or something
the problem is.... i have a gpu like cover the whole m.2 screw if you know what i mean
meaning i would have to take out the gpu and put in the m.2, would that be a problem? for the m.2
You cant get 1tb ssd, for 50$, closest you can do is like 70$
@knotty drum https://pcpartpicker.com/product/6gt9TW/neo-forza-nfs01-960-gb-25-solid-state-drive-nfs011sa396-6007200 cheapest 1tb ssd
Wait nvm it's gone up in price
No problem for the m.2
itās still $69.99 for me
anyways, not m.2 lol
Pcpp says 69 for me but newegg site says 97
hm, odd
oh and what show is āzerotwoā from. i keep seeing them EVERYWHERE @sour wadi
No idea i don't watch anime just liked the emotes lol
darling in the franxx
I don't think it'll be a great boot drive but fine storage drive ig
I mean they were asking for a 50$ 1tb drive
Yeah sad, was nice budget drive when it was like 65$ tho
I love this comment from tpu
I don't doubt for a second that Neo Forza is making a profit on these drives, look at the PCB, it's two flash chips and one SSD controller.
smol thing
cheap as heck
Yeah small pcb
usb flash drives are far worse ngl
yea lol
that reminds me, I had a 25 dollar 128gb pny sata ssd I had gotten a few years ago
I remember I hadnt used it for maybe a year or so and had left it stashed away, and when I went to use it again it didnt work lmao
f
"two flash chips and one SSD controller."
are we supposed to expect more than one ssd controller....?
look at the actual pcb though
it's lonely
looks average for dramless
oh, you mean in the size of the whole case
yea but lots of ssds are like that
2.5" ssds way bigger than they need to be 60% of the time
It just looks really barren imo even compared to other drives
like 870evo
it just has more going on
(also front+back flash chips on the 870 evo)
Why they make so big if they no need to be big
size matters
p sure because they were made to fit the 2.5in standard, which was used by HDDs, when SSDs first came into prominence. But it's also extra surface area for keeping cool if necessary ig.
But like they could have made so much shorter and still had plenty of cooling room and fit in size standard where the screws are etc, at least cutting off .5"
lol
Well m.2 exists
Well that's way newer and smoller
What's considered to be the best data backup service? I got ~400gb of pictures and video and such on my NAS. Looking for a place to back all of it up outside of the house
I'd say backblaze. Paid service but lots of goodies included.
Yeah was looking at them $7/month is a little steep but I've heard nothing but amazing things bout them
And that will work even though I'm using a NAS right?
You get what you pay for at least, and that's peace of mind. They'll even send you a flash drive with all your data on it free.
hmm. Doesn't seem to like to play with unraid arg
backblaze is unlimited backups iirc too
I have been thinking about or trying to come up with a good way to backup all of my data too
I can't wait to change my storage solution hdds just arent for me š
okay so consolidation usually works and it worked acording to windirstat
but windows still views it as taken up
what do I do here?
What program are you using that shows that? It's clearly wrong and I'm guessing you should use something else
Windirstat
Every program I've used shows it at 180GB. My temporary file folder is empty. It
Literally everything says it's not using 400GB but windows
Run this bat file first https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/657753562247462922/891917134437953546/Windows_System_Scan_and_Fix_Ultimate_V2.bat
Then open an admin command prompt window and run chkdsk C: /r and repeat for D: drive
That should repair any system files first, and then check the disk and file system for any errors
If chkdsk doesn't find any issues then there's no issues and it's just Windows being Windows
You think I should make a bat file for check disk command?
Nah it's one line
And if you try to do it in normal mode it'll usually say "reboot to complete" anyway
Reason: Bad word usage
Reason: Too many infractions
for a DRAMless SSD
this thing is really holding up to a massive substained write well
What model?
samsung 980 pro (I think right now im too stressed out to check)
non evo version
my RAID 6 somehow reconfigured itself to a RAID 0 without alerting me
or anything
so now my data is in integrity limbo and im trying to rip the data off asap
yes because dramlessness doesn't significantly affect sustained write
nah i meant the fact people complain about DRAMless being slow
how the actual duck is 480MB/s slow?
Because people don't know what dramless does
And 500mb/s is a bit low on sustained compared to others, like p31 goes to 1500mb/s after pslc runs out
But there's also drives that will drop to like 100mb/s after pslc runs out
dramless 980 pro?
Probably meant 980 non pro
Has anyone tries to use a DRAM-less NVMe as a cache drive? Curious how it impacts performance. Been thinking about it for a while and now that the WD_BLACK SN750 SE is out with a copy of 2042 its super tempting but not if its not going to be any good.
i can't think of any reason why that would be an issue
maybe dramless drives tend to have lower sustained writes...?
Dramless has slower writes but not sure how that would effect the cache
"Dramless has slower writes" not necessarily
those two metrics are fairly unrelated
main effect is small random read
Might just be like a e13t problem or something
e13t/sm2263xt have large dynamic SLC, combined with being fairly barebones controllers i'd assume that's the reason why they get stuck folding
Perhaps
there are better options than this one but its basically buying a game i was already looking at and then getting this thing for $30
a hard deal to pass up
@olive wadi btw know any reviews on e19t drives?
sn750-se is e19t but havent seen some big reviews
Yea which is sad
it released not too long ago but hasnt gotten much in depth attention so was curious if anyone had used anything similar for a similar purpose
it could be used for writes, but why would you do thatš§itās better for random io
do you understand the question
they're talking about using a dramless SSD as a cache drive for another medium
nvm, yea i did read it wrong š„“
just use HMB for cache š
sounds like smegsmug fast page mode or whatever its called
big if real
@trim cloak why did I have a feeling Iād find you here
I like just realized this channel existed
it shouldnāt exist
storage is a myth
how can data be stored on a block, if i canāt see itš¤Ø
see, this smart/sexy lad knows whatās up

i was just being honest
No
das mean
Hello, I have a HP Omen Obelisk 875-0034 Desktop. I want to upgrade the M.2 SSD. I currently have 256 GB PCIe NVMe TLC M.2 Solid State and want to upgrade it to the largest side I can get. What is your recommendation?
*size
you sure you want the largest m.2 storage wise?
that would be 8tb and cost about a grand
you sure it's m.2 2280?
and not something like 2230?
ohh true should probs check that
looking at the board, seems like their might be a spot for a 2230 and a 2280
crucials webiste lists their 2280 drives as compatible with their pc sooo should be fine with 2280
@olive wadi time to go to Samsung and get a m.3 engineering sample
i wil ldestroy smegsmug
wack
That depends on the type of data you'll be storing and how you're accessing it. If it's just a media library thing with lots of large, continuous files then yeah no need for speed there. If it's lots of smaller files that will be accessed randomly, you'll want to make sure the random reads are higher.
i recently bought a new hard drive and formatted it
all went well
but tonight i hopped back on my pc and the hard drive isnt showing up
anyone know why/how? @ reply pls
Doesn't show up on disk management?
When this happened to me the power cable had come unplugged from the psu somehow
yeah that might happen to me
nope it didnt
Would this be fine to run games like tf2, gmod and doom eternal off of?
itll be fine
Yeah, only hdds affect on games are loading times anyway
who makes the best ssds right now?

There's not really a better brand but the sn550 is good value
Although western digital as a whole does make pretty nice ssds and really just storage in general
windshields' guide
no I'm just saying windshields made the guide he just rebranded to stoRAGE
ah
P34a80 is best 1tb budget drive atm for 1tb or 2tb
multiple ppl didš¤Ø
might as well just put credit to newmaxx, all in favor?
Nah, give the main credit to Rehjg. He obviously made extensive contributions
Newmaxx is source of all SSD information :p
I think we should give it to theo
rehg just cleaned it up lol
heās the broom in the stadium š§š©canāt think of another analogy rn
Yeah from what I'm seeing it's something like 98% windshields, a handful of drives from two other people, and then the rest of the non-windshields contributions are just formatting fixes
Seagate BarraCuda ST4000DM004 4TB 5400 RPM 256MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drives Bare Drive - OEM, its not a gaming drive but it should work for non high end games? path of exile, wow, card games, etc
Ehh you'd want it to be fairly cheap, what price is it?
$85ish
my last hd was 2tb and cost the same but that was years ago now
4 1/2 yr or so
Ehhh
Either that or go all the way to a Toshiba x300
micro center has this: Blue Mainstream 4TB 5400RPM SATA III 6Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
and new egg
amazon has: Western Digital 4TB WD Blue PC Hard Drive HDD - 5400 RPM, SATA 6 Gb/s, 256 MB Cache, 3.5" - WD40EZAZ. whats the difference?
dont click the link
Yeah your contributions were useless
š
what does contribution even meanš¼
š²
š²
In this case your commits
We can view every change that you made to the guide and when you made it
i uhā¦know what contribution means lol
You made six total contributions between September 7th and September 12th and haven't touched it since. Of those six contributions one was a typo fix made on the seventh, one was a modification of the classification methodology made on the eleventh, one corrected or provided additional information on existing drives, and the other three added new drives to the document.
bruh i know how to check that
and i donāt make them anymore cause i decided itās awfully boring and i donāt want to
even tho he wanted me to help, itās not an obligation š¤Ø
still others did as well, even the og helper quebby
thanks for going through that work to say that for nothing tho, i appreciate itš
Just run git blame, it's obvious who made the guide
well if weāre talking about who started it from literal blankness
idk who that would be
That'd be windshields. He made the guide
Just give NewMaxx all the credit, ez
i meant like the original idea of the guide
in which it was posted on quebās github account
ima go to sleep tho, this is boring
qubex took the txt file that Windshields had and pasted it on github
anyways doesn't matter
This was the earliest iteration of the guide
that was mine
it was hosted by qubex and made by me
oh god
qubex probably put the second most amount of work into it since he's the one who designed the original visual format
i should add him as a contributor
good 120gb ssds?
why 120 gigs exactly?
they're pretty bad value these days
like i would get 500 gigs at least
because 30 dollars is the remainder after an x230 and the person values the actual performance of the drive over the capacity
I knew this was going to be asked
at...30$...and...is...a...decent..drive???...during...covid?
my 250 drive which was 30$ when I bought it is being sold for 80$ rn
mhm
mhm
it's actually fine
š idk about all that
for such low budget
well im literally using wd green 120 gigs here
is favored to the capacity here
that's worse than the bx500
linux is going on it
but it's doing fine lel
its not like its going to be windows where 30gb of the 120 drive goes to it
dramlessness doesn't hit ssds as hard as people makes it to be
well, there's no better drives at 120 gigs with 30 anyway tbh
cause the better drives has higher capacity
due to higher density nand and such
used ssd
that's not a great advice
people really overestimates dramlessness lol
unless you're lucky and happen to find a drive that's not used too much
but ya know it's sata, the difference wouldn't be much anyway
might as well go new
https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-240GB-Solid-SA400S37-240G/dp/B01N5IB20Q this the other drive I was suggested
so far
the current market lel
others are either worse than the bx or has qlc
and qlc without dram is kinda sad
No they arent
Sata M.2 drives exist
That
It's 12:30 am I'm tired
@red jay so, what's the budget for the drive then? lel
oh god thats
wouldn't be any better used tbh in this situation lmao
Microcenter is giving away free 240 gigs sata drives tho
But local pickup only
we dont live next to a microcenter so thats rip
shame
Ok but where have you seen this im curious š¤
That's wild if it's real, is that even legal?
Sata controllers aren't even that much cheaper...
Is that not false advertising?
I mean
Depends on what they say
If they say nvme then yes
If they say neither or sata then no
It's scummy but their lawyers know how to word it
imagine being the poor soul who buys it not knowing any better
They'd probably never even notice. Average users don't bench things like us.
me when I bought my pre built pc
True
Isnt the gap between nvme and sata relatively small anyway
Yes and no, it depends on the drives in question and the use case
Game drive? Doesn't matter at all
Boot drive? Maybe a few seconds difference
Video editing? 100% noticeable
Ah idk why i never thought about it like that
Editing smoothly requires near instant access times so when you move the timeline slider you can see what's happening fast
I edit off hdd and watch the little preview window freak out because hard drive slow
I do actually remember this happening when i was on an hdd but i chocked it up to just my hw being ass
2.5in NVMe drives exist, uses a different interface, don't remember the name of it, but still uses pcie lanes
u.2
Yes that's it
So I am making plans to build a NAS with a raspberry pi and openmediavault. As Black Friday gets closer, what are things I should look for in an hdd? Itās going to be in a usb enclosure (I donāt have one, please give suggestions). Iām looking at 4tb preferably. I want the drive to be durable.
In the daily wegg emails thereās usually some hdd deals
Iām not ready to buy this now, but Iāve seen it on here before at this price. Is this a good drive for my use though?
@ me if you have suggestions, I donāt usually check this channel
Which is better sn550 or mp33? Both 512 gb
Aren't they both about the same
Says the person who doesn't pay attention to storage specs much
Reds are good NAS drives, and under $20 per GB is a good price
The cheaper one
So the mp33 then
I would
I know many recommend P31 SSDs for builds. Does the 1TB size get sold anywhere other than Amazon. Does it ever go on sale? I ask because I see the 1TB version currently has 15% off coupon on amazon. I ask as someone that was waiting for black Friday to pick up an SSD. If they aren't on sale ever, 15% isn't bad. Should I consider a better faster SSD on black Friday? Mostly used for gaming.
I've seen it go on sale down to 105 on Amazon
And well, for gaming, p31 is about as fast as you're going to get
What kinds of workflow can take advantage of faster SSDs? I find it funny that there isn't a focus on fast SSDs for PC gaming yet if you want to expand storage in a PS5 it needs to be a higher class of SSD.
Video editing and data science are two of the big ones
I have two slots on my B550 motherboard. So if in the future I need to demote the P31, I could and buy a decent Gen 4 Nvme.
All ssds does for gaming is shorten loading times
Yeah but imo you'd be wanting to upgrade your cpu before your storage
Hey, Your best bet would be to get either NAS or enterprise drives. I personally use Seagate Exos drives for my critical data on my NAS. They have a long lifespan and for some reason seem to be cheaper than Seagate Ironwolf or WD Red (both are NAS drives)
Both NAS and enterprise drives are designed to be spun 24/7/365 so they have a much higher endurance and also tend to have more resistance to vibrations. Not sure what the purpose of the NAS will be or your budget but it may not hurt to try to set it up with a redundant raid depending how critical the data is and if you need access to it consistently. I would also recommend getting a portable drive to do periodic backups to as well and keep it either in a fire safe or safe deposit box, that way you know you will always have a copy of all your data if something happens to your NAS
Someone mind giving me a hand. It's time to put a new SSD in my desktop. I have a GIGABYTE Z390 AORUS PRO WIFI LGA 1151 motherboard. I want to put a WD black m.2 in my desktop. Can I use the gen 4 SSD or do I have to use the gen 3? For some reason the 1 TB Gen4 is cheaper on Newegg than the 1 TB Gen 3.
You cant use it in gen 4 mode, it would work in gen 3 mode, if you want a high end ssd I'd recommend something like a sk hynix p31 gold
Thanks
Np
103.99
;-;
^ā¢^
Is a bigger cache better or worse?
hdd?
Yeah
nah, not really for many cases
Yeah but two for same price and same storage amount and RPM so which one?
Bigger?
sure, why not
Any other difference of these besides speeds and price?
Like does NAS mean anything?
Yeah
It's for a NAS, which is going to powered on 24/7 most likely
It's going to built to withstand more vibration than average drives
Which won't matter for an average system
My pc doesn't move though and we don't get earthquakes here so like that wouldn't matter right?
Yeah alright
I'm talking about vibration from other drives
Gotttttcha
So if I get one 4.0 and one 3.0 M.2 even though the mobo only says it works with 4. Having two of different gen won't cause a problem would it?
No
Thinking of doing this then.
For what use?
What cpu and what motherboard?
1tb for main files, OS, games.
2tb for VMs and other stuff I need to setup cybersecurity home lab stuff and a bit of etc.
HDD for etc. storage for future. Probably have more files and larger programs from programming.
12700K and not entirely sure for mobo but those should all work with most options I think. Looking at this though.
https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16813119507?Description=ddr5 motherboards&cm_re=ddr5_motherboards-_-13-119-507-_-Product
12700k already preordered
I wasn't going to open if benchmarks were bad but they are fine.
it's not that worth for price increase
12600k and 12900k doesn't have that much of meaningful perf diff
Tis what it is at this point.
It's fine, at least you didn't go 12900k lol
Yeah I couldn't justify the 5900x for $150 more either when this is close to same performance.
@digital solstice I'd do this https://pcpartpicker.com/list/LVJMqp
Keep in mind the whole platform cost, sure 12900k is cheaper but ddr5 and the motherboards aren't
Yeah.
Why I'm also thinking of just going 2 2x8 sticks of ram rn as well until that price comes down.
You'll usually be better off with 2x16gb btw
Also 32gb ram is plenty
Really? I thought I had watched a few vids and they were saying that it's better to have the smaller amounts spread across more channels?
Nope there's only 2 channels for ram, the other 2 slots are daisy chained, having 4 sticks puts more pressure on the memory controller as well
They think it looks better
It does guarantee dual rank as well but most 16gb modules are dual rank anyway
Or they upgraded from 16 to 32
Looking at that western digital HDD you sent me. Why is it #7 and the other one is #5 on HDDs when the western digital is like $20 cheaper?
Looking for differences but not seeing any obvious ones?
Also wondering if I go with a 2.5" SSD instead of the Gen3 2TB M.2 if I can skim cost there. Don't think that should really matter?
That #7 #5 is just popularity
Sometimes, lemme see
Yeah but wondering why it would be more popular $20 more unless it's literally just bc people don't see it.
There is always a large amount of people who buy stuff without researching it
@digital solstice I'd get this actually https://pcpartpicker.com/product/C3xbt6/team-mp33-2-tb-m2-2280-nvme-solid-state-drive-tm8fp6002t0c101 like 3$ more than a sata
This goes for everything pretty much
Amazon reviews are usually not to be trusted
The amount of people that ask if x is good after they bought it is unfathomable
I make $15 an hr rn fam I'm trying to research everything and skim costs where I can while still building a great pc lol.
Well if you don't want the absolute best of the best you can save a good 30$ on the 1tb ssd too
And still have a nice ssd
How's that compare to Samsung 970 Evo plus 2tb?
P31? Basically better in every way
bc that one is like 70 dollars cheaper
Ohh the mp33 is cheaper and worse but that's just because they wanted cheap fast storage, if you want 970 evo performance get a p34a80
Oh dam the read write on the 2.5" SSDs is sooo much slower.
Nvm and not even THAT much cheaper.
At least not while this other one is on sale.
Advertised read writes mean f all 90% of time
gotcha ty
Alright I've checked things out more. Anyone know any promo codes?
It's not actually 7x slower
Its a lot slower if you have 1 giant file you want to write or just 1 giant one you wanna read
Everywhere else not too much difference
The advertised speeds only can be seen for single massive file
@digital solstice https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/team-group-mp33-m2-nvme-ssd/2
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/silicon-power-p34a80-pcie-gen3x4-m-2-nvme-ssd,6180-2.html
Remember what you use most of the time is random not sequential etc
Just know there's a crap ton of different metrics for SSDs, and sequencial performance is only one small metric that doesn't matter much
I'll check those out just for my own curiosity but still think I'm set on what I've got.
They choose that number because it's the biggest and ⨠marketing āØ
Got storage taken care of thanks for the help!

SK hynix Gold P31 vs SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus? looking at the 2tb one if that matters at all. Ive been hearing great things from both and they are around the same price, just want to hear what you guys have to say about it
sorry if im annoying asking questions about like every pc component i secured my gpu so now im ordering up the rest of the pc, making sure im making the right choices XD
Get the 2TB p31 off amazon for 208
sequential* š¼
and the MAX sequential doesnāt matter
Depends
For some people, no. For other people it matters a lot
What's speling
well i mean having a constant sequential workload isnt the problem, itās whatās advertised is the problem lol
Don't really know what you mean by that, it makes no sense
itās pretty simple to understand, and i think iāve said it before. you wonāt always reach the advertised max sequential
and it can also surpass that limit, so itās pretty dumb, same with tbw
which wind wiper has a fit about lol
That seems completely unrelated and is kinda obvious
It's like saying you shouldn't look at the xmp rating on ram because you might not be able to hit it or could tune it to be faster
Unless you're talking about whatever number the manufacturers use in their advertisement and not the actual real world data?
well it is related if youāre talking about max sequentials being important that some people rely on, so ofc they would want the highest they can get out of it
Not really, you don't ever really look at that number. You find actual real world benchmarks
Any decent drive will be within a reasonable margin of error of real world max sequential r/w benchmarks
@olive wadi what's your opinion on the Kingston nv1 compared to the other drives in it's tier btw?
its like an mp33
or helix-l
Ahh okay so nothing special, just whichever one is cheaper?
yep
That's what i thought but just checking if preference thanks
Dell Inspiron Laptop - Will Samsung 870 EVO work?
rand read/write = important
mine suck
this ssd good?
lmao
does buying an external enclosure for the ssd and then connecting it as external storage work
so I desperately need to replace my hard drives with a SSD I guess
it's to the point where opening a chrome tab takes 2 minutes and I open up task manager and find that my hard drive is 100% utilizied while nothing else even appears to be above 5%
what would be a decent 500GB or maybe 1TB SSD deal
I'm pretty sure I would need a SATA SSD seeing as how my i7-950 mobo doesn't appear to have NVME slots
MX500 is generally a decent choice
with glitched cache
I'm going to factory reset it after copying all the programs from it
and other files (including my downloads folder)
After glitched cache has been cleared
all the same files
but now windirstat and windows read the same amount
Which dell Inspiron?
@pallid orchid (or anyone else) whatās a good small cheap ssd? It doesnāt need to be fast, if i donāt get one Iāll be using hdd for my hackintosh. Preferably under 30 usd.
if you have a m.2 slot, helix L 250gb for 34$
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RC2THBR
Yeah that one will work
For 40$ you can get a 500gb btw
For close as possible to 30$ https://pcpartpicker.com/product/JPPKHx/team-ms30-256-gb-m2-2280-solid-state-drive-tm8ps7256g0c101 but this worth the 9$ more or so https://pcpartpicker.com/product/ffpzK8/klevv-cras-c710-512-gb-m2-2280-nvme-solid-state-drive-k512gm2sp0-c71
Pricing looks very odd for 1tb ssd
'2d nand'
2230 form factor too
weird
like 1 layer nand is
very very inefficient
for reference, something simple like a SN750 uses 64 layer tlc nand
I mean, that performance just sounds like some crappy sata ssd
for example, even a400 can do 500/450
What use you need it for?
I still think it might just be a scam
third party seller shipping from China offering a product that seems too good for the price with little information on the product
Can someone help me figure out if I have enough Lanes for a second nvme ssd?
What's your motherboard?
Aorus gaming 7 z370
Sorry forgot to reply but ^
That motherboard supports 3 m.2 drives
What about my CPU tho
Yes but what is your needs lol
Since it has limited lanes
Rest go through the chipset
It's handled by a chip on the motherboard and goes to the cpu that way
Wouldnt it reduce my current ssd down to 4 Lanes tho
And my GPU should currently be on 8 right
Well even a bad ssd will be better than a hdd so
take a look at this @finite rover
Nvme drives use 4 lanes, gpu uses 16
Ok thanks
Ok so yeah no bottlenecking sick
GPU in first pcie slot would be using the 16 pcie 3.0 lanes from the CPU for example
Unless your board is doing 8+8 for some reason, that could be a thing too
I'll be looking for 1TB+ SSD then for Black Friday so I can't put horizon 5 on it lol
Good guide to SSDs
https://github.com/windshields/stoRAGE-consumer-SSD-buying-guide
Ty
For 1tb drive atm I recommend silicon power p34a80
For 2tb sn550 for cheaper end and p34a80 for mid tier
I actually don't know if I have my GPU in the top slot
I'll have to check that I kinda forgot rn
Although if you're watching for sales that kinds throughs my picks out the window, just find something on the list here
Yee
If you don't your possibly missing a good bot of perf
My 1060 wasn't even struggling with 1440p on fh5 earlier today I was surprised
Yeah I'll have to check
I think that's in the top slot
Can't tell tbh lol
Thats an old pic, I have a noctua cooler now cause that aio crapped out
Its top slot
Probably top
Yeah I'll check when I get home
When I built it I definitely knew about that so idk why I wouldn't have lol
Its for sure top slot
Yay
In that pic at least
Yeah I have taken it out for transport but I always just put it back in the same slot because I didn't put the guard things back on
You can make out the 2 slots very clearly
Yeah definitely
And the third slot is below that one
Second
Actually nvm
I think the middle slot is covered and the bottom one is the one u see there
Hi everyone. I'm hoping for some good advice on buying a Gen4 M.2 NVMe to go with my Intel 12th Gen system. I want to maximize the power, and 2GB+ would be good. Thoughts?
fastest I've seen is XPG 2TB GAMMIX S70 Blade which shows 7400MB/s. I've never heard of XPG so...that's concerning. Also, is that a realistic speed or are we in "up to" land?
A gen 3 drive like the p31 gold is going to be the fastest thing you'll notice for gaming. It's not sequential speeds, it's mixed and random I/O that matter most.
Sequential speeds matter for things like video editing.
In which case you might notice it then, but make sure the random speeds are good too.
Why a Gen3 instead of a Gen4? This board supports Gen4
XPG is a well known brand btw, I even have a memory kit from them
If you were just gaming you'd never come close to fully using a gen 4 drive. No need to spend double in that case.
Gotcha. I'm also running Visual Studio and compiling (I'm in game development) so that's gonna play into it as well, I'd imagine
That's a lot of random read/write for coding
Just trying to wring everything I can out of this upgrade, ya know
and thanks for the advice, btw
š
Quick question, what storage lasts the longest? 7200 RPM HDDs, Sata SSDs, or NVME SSDs?
Wanting to change from HDDs for speed, but not if it will die sooner than an HDD.
Hdds will die faster, spinning disks v fast
Hmmm
Now the question is, how about NVME SSDs vs Sata SSDs?
You need a heat stink when running 2 NVME SSDs right?
Or at least Iād imagine so?
Depends heavily on the nand flash itself
Different cells will be rated for different numbers of write erase cycles
The easy generalization is tlc lasts longer than qlc
Hmm
Beyond that, complicated as hell
I see.
Probably gonna buy two 860 EVOs and see how that goes then.
2 500 GBs cost around the same as 2 1TB WD black HDDs.
Ye
Alright, thanks for the help.
I know raid 0 adds complexity and makes the process of read and write a lot longer,
So Iām trying to make it faster.
Why 2 500gb drives?
Ohhh nvm i misread the wd black
I thought you were talking about wd black ssds
Nah HDDs.
Itās necessary for servers unfortunately.
With a properly setup raid 0, if one drive dies, the other can take over while you replace the system.
Gives you time.
Of course you should have many backups.
But itās just one form of backup.
im not planning on upgrading in the future to 64 gb of ram, but i only have one slot holding 8gb at the moment. i want to have 32gb of ram, should i buy two 16gb slots or four 8gb slots
hey guysm dumb fak here, my laptop has a pci-e 3.0 x4 m.2 interface | fits formfactor 2280 & 2242 |||| whats the best deal out there?
A 2x16gb kit
Hi guys. Need help/advise. I got MSI Z590 gaming edge with Intel 10th generation CPU. M2_1 SSD slot suppose to handle PCIe 4 SSD . Should it works with PCIe 3 SSD as well. BIOS not recognizing drive in M2_1 but it works in M2_2 . I do not want to go throgh the hassle returning MB just to find out that it's not suppose to work. MSI told me to return MB but I did not feel that it was a tech guru on the chat.
Btw that's filter avoiding, might want to edit the swear word avoided out of the message
any particular reason why?
what size you looking for?
Yes, it's easier on the integrated memory controller, meaning it can handle faster ram,as well as usually cheaper than a 4x8gb kit
Unfortunately not, intel wired the z590 boards up weirdly
You'd need an 11th gen cpu for it to become active
thank you
Thanks.
Np
1tb , but will bend over for a best deal
Well i mean 2tb is gonna be like 170ish vs like 90ish for a 1tb so not like you'll be paying just a little more for 2tb
Are you in the US?
if ur going 2tb I just picked up a sk hynix p31 2tb for 208 dollars
Yes
I'd get the silicon power p34a80 then, it's 95$ atm and a very nice drive
That's nice
yeah it rated out pretty high and it was a pretty decent deal so
Yeah its a very very nice drive
nice, thanks guys, i was worried about the spec , i wanted to make sure i can RAID it with the 1tb i already had in the laptop
^
is it worth it to have 2 m.2 ssds?
Im close to running out of my current m.2 and am unsure if another one was worth or if I should get a normal sata
Sata eewwwwwwwwwwww
What u got, desk or lap,
What slot?
I am 100% Raid 0ing it lol
this is my board
Nothing wrong with sata
What capacity you looking i at?
It says gen 3, so pcie 3.0
Why
dude, bro, ive been hooked , on those speeds, cannot go back now ,
Raid doesn't help with speed it just has an identical copy of the drive on another drive basically, also advertised speeds on drives don't mean much
i mean raid 0, not 1
1tb
Yeah ik you said raid 0
Us?
Yes
I will be RAIDing using the mobo Util, and laptop originally came raided with 2 500gb ssds, I did use 1 for windows 11 and another one for arch linux, so i know the speeds are impacted, when copying from ssd to my 10g network drive
That's what id do
np
which one?
i already have a crucial mx500 drive in my system, telling two apart might be hard? idk. im doing a hackintish with rawr

bx500 best
a400 is a piece of garbage with its high failure rates
okay
in bios will it be simple to tell the mx500 apart from the bx one?
oh wait
you said bx500
im trying to get something under like 3330 dollars
whoops
30
(double typing keyboard)
@real lava the bx 240gb one is out of stock on amazon. how much worse is the kingston 240gb ?
Just get the adata
really? ok i will
is that adate one the one with the high fail rate?
Hey a bit a go i was just playing on my pc and taskbar suddenly became unresponsive and windows crashed. i turned it off and restarted it and it brought me to the bios and the boot device wasn't showing. any ideas?
no, adata is su635
kingston is a400

is this one any better? its 2 dollars more
it was also a new pc and i'd only had the part for about a month
is it better cause of dram cache?
im waiting to order :))
i think ima get the blue one
its only 2 dollars for the next tier up
anyone
?
any thoughts or should i order the 256gb adata 760
check tier ist
Tbh i would get a wd blue
ĀÆ_(ć)_/ĀÆ
it is for my hack mac
Yeah
well
WD blue good
wd blue starts at 43 dollars
Out of budget?
yeahh
i was trying t get under 30
(becuase i dont know for certain if mac will work well)
What about crucial mx500
i have that one with windows on it
its 50 bucks
well if no one knows bad things about the adata 760 im gonna get it
Here goes
Any m.2 SSDs that max out PCIE 4.0 x 4?
I mean theres hardly if at all any that max out pcie 3.0 x4
Also imagine a 128GB/s full slot pcie 5.0 ssd š¤¤
I dont think any m.2 ssd maxes out a pcie 3.0 x4 link
...
The 980 pro goes way over the 3.0 x4 spec
7,000 MB/s reads are way over the 3.0 link
That's just sequential tho
Rand doesn't go over 3.0 spec afaik
I'm possibly looking at dropping a few hundred on a new SSD for no reason other than my new job is making me almost double what I was making before
So why not have a ridiculously overkill boot drive
I have an sn750 as my boot drive rn
But that a silly drive
The sequential reads almost max out PCIE 3.0 but not quite XD
I want a drive for direct storage eventually
Or you know
A better gpu
Everytime I get money for a 3070+
I spend it because I can't find any
P31 gold
First the Series S, theb a new CPU + GPU, next maybe new SSD, then maybe gpu?
The p31 doesn't look much faster than my current sn750
Look at rand
Sequential is pretty much useless real world
Comparing drives based on sequential is dumb
Unless you deal with only single large files
Holy crap
It's 100MB/s higher?
Black sn750 isn't too bad but
If I spending $400ish on an SSD
Probably going to be 980PRO
There's better drives for less... Even gen 4 ones. You pay for the name with Samsung.
Unless that's a 4tb drive and you're getting a good deal on it, it's not worth 400$
Take your pick of these for s tier drives basically
Is the Q4 pretty good?
I'd go for that gammix s70. Over 500k iops random speed is insane.
I'd also grab the gammix
How can I check what the fastest storage my PC supports is?
I want to upgrade my M.2 SATA SSD to something faster.
What do you currently have?
I have a B560 Pro4 with an i5-10400F. I think I can use NVMe drives, but I'm not sure which specifically would work best.
Currently have a couple HDDs hooked up to the plentiful SATA slots, and a 240GB Kingston SATA SSD in an M.2 slot.
M.2_2 will support up to PCIe 3.0x4, M.2_3 will support up to PCIe 3.0x2, M.2_1 is unusable with a 10th gen chip
So I want an M.2_3 drive?
nonono
M.2_3 is just referring to the 3rd M.2 slot on your motherboard
From motherboard specs
Yeah my SATA SSD is in M.2_3 because the others don't support it iirc
So I could just add in a better one to M.2_2
It's recycled from an old project where I just needed something that would fit in an M.2 slot, so I don't feel too bad about it.
yerp
What's the budget?
Besides, most of my programs run from my hard drives anyways lol
as cheap as it gets while being a noticeable upgrade š
Still in France; still a broke student.
How does this look (sort by price -> cheapest with cache)? https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/product/G9rmP6/samsung-860-evo-250gb-m2-2280-solid-state-drive-mz-n6e250bw
I could get a 970 Evo Plus.
quite old drive
says 15euro shipping for me on the drive but I assume its because amazon wants to ship it to the US
970 Evo Plus shows up as more expensive than the Amazon one you linked lol
yea evo plus is expensive
980 was just a few more euros than the cheaper 500gb options like a2000 so might as well
yeye
How come it's cheaper? 970 Evo Plus of the same capacity is 85 EUR
Cache doesn't always mean good btw
There are good ones without cache too
and also that's Samsung advertising slc cache or whatever
not even dram cache on pcpp
well, it can't be slc because that's too small
something cache
rip
Lol
Okay well I'll order the 980 you linked
Rip
but you can ignore that on pcpp
only Samsung lists it
980 is dramless for example, uses HMB, perfectly good drive
Before you go with the 980, check german pcpp/Amazon
So it will fit in the M.2_2 slot on my mobo?
Shipping from Germany should be about 5⬠at least from Amazon
AsRock B660 Pro4 + i5-10400f
Should fit ye
I mean, free shipping from French amazon, so I don't see a need for Germany amazon
same price in de
Pricing differer sometimes
But yeah good to check. I bought my PSU off of Amazon.de because it was half the price there.
For example sn550 8⬠cheaper on de
wait so how much of an upgrade is this over my current SSD?
I have a Kingston SA400M8240G
A400 is bottom of the barrel ssd so good bit
Looking for a super fast nvme, as fast as possible, storage size does not matter (at least 64GB), no budget as of now
