Ram will work but XMP may not stick when you turn it on in the BIOS
Gray slots
ok
should be fine after that
Not like moving RAM to different slots is hard.
do ssd's
lose their data when unplugged?
wait only 1 of my dimms is showing up in BIOS
Why do you need CSM?
the mushkin piolet e I think is a legacy drive
Windows 10 should be installed with CSM off and Legacy off for UEFI rather than MBR
No
Definitely not
ok
So
hmmm
I guess turn on Legacy mode and CSM if you have to
XMP also shouldn't crash things
i can't tho
ok
Asus board?
Could you send a pic of the entire boot subscreen
Like all the options under boot?
Have you actually tried booting without changing all of this?
yes
Change custom to standard
Bruh
Ahh nice
Windows UEFI? It should have worked without changing any of this
has a suspicion this guy was playing with settings he didn't understand
Same
who doesn't play with settings you don't understand
I 100% do
probably
yeah
Reset to Defaults works great for that XD
lol
I have a custom memory OC i would be very unhappy about losing because of reset defaults
So don't use it then?
Ok
save as a profile onto a usb stick
Yep I have that done
Just that updating bios is a pain
meh
My board also has the option to save 8 profiles

well I forgot how my raid setup was configured after selling most of my desktop... so I now have five invalidly configured drives with all my data from that computer
213 usd for 2x4tb wd black hard drive brand new good deal or no
https://www.newegg.com/black-wd4005fzbx-4tb/p/234-000G-000W6

$213? That's says $149 each

Macrium Reflect
is it all in that or is there anything I need to do first?
@dusk turtle
Run macrium Reflect, full back up to the new drive,
Macrium Software - the creators of Macrium Reflect backup, imaging and cloning software.
is it ok they are both in my pc?
Yes
is there a download link on that page?
is this the right thing?
Help, my 2nd ssd isn't showing up
right click
ok
should look something like this
aaaaaa
well what are the instructions in case it works later or i fix it or something
go do windows debugging ig, lemme grab guide
General fix for random windows problems
From an admin command prompt or powershell, run:
sfc /scannow
If that doesn't work, try:
dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Then, try running sfc again.
Repeat as necessary
Hi, I was wondering if both of the storages were necessary with this build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/PLyTkX
250 GB isn't very big and it's speedy for fast boot times. The 2 TB drive is good for games/media storage
The 11700 is unnecessary for sure
Not good with a B560 board
Swap it out with an 11400/11500 to save some money
So I should keep the 250GB one or should I toss it?
Also I'm not sure how long it's gonna be until i can get a graphics card so i want my PC to able to run games and edit videos decently before i can get one. So wouldn't the 11700 be better with it's iGpu and 8 cores?
No
11500 has same iGPU
Game performance will be virtually identical
Ram speed matters more in this case
CPU cores =/= iGPU cores
I checked earlier and I think the 11500 was out of stock
Is this better? https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Hn6Vvf.
269 for the 11500 isn't a good price either, should be right around $200. You can get an 11600 for $269 if you can't wait and have to get it right now.
If you can wait for the 11500 to restock, which doesn't take long, go for it at $219
Okay, thank you!
@dusk turtle more context, they're going for iGP build, and want to do video editting
that's why 11700 was in there
and yea, need to get bigger ssd
How much bigger?
500gb at least
250gb drives are a waste to buy, usually you're just paying to have the physical ssd and not for the storage at that point
500GB and up
Still probably won't get a 1TB drive personally, too expensive for me
but they're priced reasonably
Yeah, 500 gigs is the lowest you should get for the money’s worth.
quest on 500 gb ssd.. i just learn about them over this last month.. ATM i am using a 1tb Hdd that 2 years old for all my games.. i have only sata plugs should i get a 500gb ssd and move my games to it.. i am all new to the ssd
I'd recommend putting your OPerating system and a few games on the SSD and the rest on the 1TB HDD to take advantage of the speeds
YW
I have a 2TB hard drive in my new to me pc, got it to quiet down with the included drive mounting rubbers
I want to take this thing home with me and combine hardware with my old PC, it has a better CPU and some SSD/hard drive storage as well
Idk when that'll be so I might just buy another 500GB WD Blue 3D
How difficult is an M.2 drive to install, doesnt seem that bad? Is it as easy as just putting it into the PCIe port?
It takes 2 minutes
So no
Just could be aids getting the tiny screw started to hold the ssd down if you don’t have a magnetic screw driver
But no
Not difficult?
No not difficult
Unscrew cover
Snap ssd in
Screw ssd foen
Screw on cover
literally just plug and play and ur good?
Have one but I have another M.2 slot
no cover
Yes
Some boards may need you to put a little booster on the hole ur gonna screw the side of the ssd into
my HDD is kinda aids, probably gonna get an m.2 + ssd
the sata connector is barely connected
ooo nice 😄
I think I need a bit more space since I am gonna take out the HDD, it is a 2tb
maybe do a 1tb m.2 and 1/2tb ssd
not sure yet
well I mean a m.2 ssd and a non m.2 ssd
Ah
sry lol
Another thing is some ssds may have a thermal pad thingy and the m.2 cover may have one on there aswell
So u need to pick between them
And peel one of the other off
ahh, I am looking at one that comes with a heatsink is that what youre referring too?
Looks more like an unreliable program, those results make no sense unless it has background tasks or something
dont know if thats the case since crystaldiskmark is saying the same thing
is that bad for the hard drive
I wouldn't say it's "bad" but you probably have some sort of cache on your system skewing results
11.2 GB/s read is simply not possible, even for most SSDs
Probably RAM cache which can be good or bad
If the system shuts down before the cache flushes you'll lose data
Like in a power outage
It's usually only whatever data you're working with that gets damaged at least
oh ok then it should be fine since i only use it for games and storing videos then right?
I'm sure the drive is fine unless it's showing other weird syptoms
nah i was just checking my drive speeds and i saw that and i was like thats not supposed to happen
Actually it looks like you set it to the 1 GB test, maybe try the 8GB or something and see if it changes
That's much closer to what I'd expect, you probably have an Intel system? Sometimes the default is to have the Rapid Storage on, which is basically a cache like I said.
nah i have ryzen
Then the drive itself might have a cache, I'll see if I can find specs
Well yeah that seems right lol
I never played with that before
so i this using my ram to speed up my drives?
Yes, up to 1GB can be stored in memory as an accelerated cache
You can adjust more or less memory allocated too from the look of it
i see
so right now its this
if i put more ram does it make it faster, not that i will 🤣
Yeah even a PCIe 4.0 drive tops out around 5-6 GB/s, no way those are real speeds
It might make it faster, depending on how much memory you have available when you have everything running though
yeah those speeds are wack
the cool thing that i found out that the samsung magician app lets you do is that it basically lets you overclock sata samsung drives like the 860 evo i have in there
so it makes it run close to m.2 speeds
probably bad for the lifespan tho
Only if the controller gets too hot
oh cool, i guess its fine then
Anyone see LTTs video on SSDs swapping components
Has been known for a while for the specific drive they did yeah
Sx8200 pro being scummy is pretty damn old news
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/adata-xpg-sx8200-pro-controller-change
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/adata-switches-nand-on-sx8200-pro-ssd-performance-impacted
I remember seeing older articles on it. Verification is always important
Just saying LTT is quite late to the party
More voices in the outcry against these practices is not a bad thing
guys and gals what the bang for the buck SSD 2.5" 1tb+ I maybe be using it for some games. Like GTAV, RDR2, COD and others
Their first video on it was like 3-4 months ago. 🤷♂️
I have a crucial MX500 that I haven’t had any issues with not sure what you’re looking to spend I think it’s around $90 right now
Right now, WD blue 1tb is 90$ from amazon
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073SBQMCX
Amazon.com: Western Digital 250GB WD Blue 3D NAND Internal PC SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s, 2.5"/7mm, Up to 550 MB/s - WDS250G2B0A: Industrial & Scientific
But if you have a m.2 slot, p2 1tb is just 80$
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1576657-REG/
Thought it was interesting that he got his hands on the different variants and tested them. That’s all, I know it’s not news in general
just saying it's a bit old news. The 8 month old article also had testing from servethehome and another end user.
Thanks @minor sun that a good deal. I brought a while back a Kingston 960BG SSD for the same price.
Hello, I'm having some problems with my SSD which is only 237 GB (Boot Drive) while my HDD is 931 GB. I want to know how I can redirect app installations to the HDD so that I don't have to worry about the storage issue on the SSD. I've already gone into windows settings and changed where I want things installed in System Storage settings. I've even gone into the Registry Editor and changed the file ProgramFilePaths to the HDD. Even though I've gone through all of this whenever I install a new app like WinRar it directs it to the AppData folder located in the SSD. I'd like to know if there exist a way to only install software onto the HDD and completely ignore the SSD.
A lot of installers are poorly programmed and ignore the default paths and assume they know best and target themselves to C:\Program Files or wherever they like.
You can change your AppData path to the hard drive by hard linking, but I don't really recommend this.
There's not a lot we can do about that except manually change the install location whenever something decides to ignore your paths.
Reason: Bad word usage
I figured as such, you can't really screw around with AppData can you?
When you say "manually change the install location" do you mean right clicking into the properties and changing the location from there or are there other ways to change it?
When the program is installing and it asks where should it install to, or sometimes there's an "advanced" option to select install path
Ah alright, there really aren't any other alternatives I guess
Messing with AppData is dangerous, it can cause your user profile to fail to load and you have to make a new user
Ultimately the solution best solution would be to get a bigger SSD in order to never have to deal with this right?
Ideally yes
I've made do with a 256GB boot drive for a long time but I also have a separate SSD for my games
Transfering the boot drive to the HDD isn't a good idea right?
That will make everything on the computer go slower
Ok thanks
I'm new to this stuff so I appreciate the help
Thank you for your time, have a good one.
No problem, you too
top drives for bulk video/some steam game that dont break the bank? like at least 4 tb. Toshiba X300?
Yes
WD blue 4tb was like 60$ on a prime day deal tho
What's better WD Black or Samsung M.2's?
Neither for the money, Hynix P31 Gold for the $130 price range
yas
better
P31 gold outperforms sn750, 970 evo, 970 evo plus, 980, etc, for real world perf
heck, outperforms all of them in seq other than evo plus being a bit better at sustained
?
Prime day deal
Got it
Less go
My only storage left is HDD so I need more SSD space. So now I'm chilling
ah
Are there a good 2tb nvme at or less than $200?
No, they're all $210 or more, even the cheap ones.
Sn550, pilot e
https://www.instagram.com/p/CQeSF-XpJ3l/?utm_medium=copy_link this should be standard
Does anyone have an idea of whare I can find an SSD drive reader for 2017-2018 macbook pro?
Is the wd blue hdd good
Do you mean usb to sata?
The 64mb one is a decent hdd iirc
I can not seem to find one. The drive does not seem to fit a sata 2 connection
sata 3 backwards compatible
Awesome! not sure why apple made this so difficult
So this should be able to read the 2018 SSD drive?
A drive reader like Sata to USB?
I got this one and it works great
Buy Unitek SATA to USB 3.0, SATA III Cable Hard Drive Adapter Converter for Universal 2.5/3.5 SATA HDD/SSD Hard Drive Disk and SATA Optical Drive, Include 12V/2A Power Adapter: SATA Cables - Amazon.com ✓ FREE DELIVERY possible on eligible purchases
awesome, do you know if this worked for a 2018 macbook pro?
Mmmm, conecting a drive to a Macbook you mean? Good question
"Compatible with Windows 98, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10 and Mac OS X.C"
Unfortunatly, macbook pro changed there SSD drives a couple of years ago, it is hard to find a reader
no it actually looks like this
typical apple
What i posted definitely won't read that lol
I am not sure where to go, stores are charging more to recover the data then it is worth
Yeah, let me do some digging
thank you!
Ok, so after some digging it's a proprietary connector NVME PCI-E drive, of course. 22+34 pins. Bad news, I can't find any adapters that go from that to USB for external use, nor for internal use. 😦
I can find adapters that let you put a normal M.2 NVME drive in your Macbook tho XD
still looking
I assure this would not work though?
At this point, I might recommend contacting Rossman Group. Company in New York that are Mac repair/data recovery experts. https://www.rossmanngroup.com/
We provide Macbook Repair in New York. 100% Upfront Pricing for Apple Logic Board Repair, Data Recovery, iPhone Screen Repair, iPad Glass Repair & more.
The king!
Does anyone have a scalable NAS solution that's cost effective? (head unit + storage bay)
i need a 1tb ssd for under 50
no
not happening my g
get a hdd or 500gb ssd
for that price
mb if you look on hwswap or ebay
980 pro or sn850?
For what use case?
adobe suite and gaming
Okay so if adobe suite you might be doing a lot of consistent writing/reading, 980 pro probs, if it was just gaming i would have said sk hynix p31 because best rand
But I'd get another opinion on that I'm not familiar with the sn850 specs off the top of my head
Still p31.....
Really? I thought constant read write 980 pro beats, or is that just non stop server type scenarios?
newegg got this p31?
It sure do, sk hynix p31 gold
Good afternoon
My name is Samuel and I have a question
I plan to purchase a series of ssd units
2 Samsung 980 pro 2tb ssd and 2 2tb Sata ssd on Asus rog Crosshair VIII formula x570 motherboard
And I had the doubt that if I connected the 4 storage devices the PC would not be able to detect them all
Could someone tell me if I would have a problem connecting all the storage units?
Swap the sata ports, sometimes adding m.2s disable sata slots
The interface of the m.2 that I plan to buy is pcie 4.0, do they still disable the Sata ports?
Depends on the board
Also pcie 4 is useless for 99% of people, what use case is it for ?
For gaming
It's an Asus rog Crosshair VIII x570
Get a p31 then it's faster an cheaper and you don't need an x570 Crosshair either btw unless you want to oc using ln2
Formila
Una pregunta, hablas español
It's an English only server and i dont know spanish sorry, but i will try dumb it down a bit :)
So sk hynix p31 is better and cheaper than 980 pro in most countries
Liquid nitrogen
And x570 crosshair is too expensive unless you are doing an over clock with liquid nitrogen
Ahhh ok
Ok So low-end motherboards for ryzen 500 work for me, right?
Yeah you only need to spend 150-200€/$ on a motherboard b550 or x570
Thanks, a question, so that there is no bottleneck with the 3090 you need a ryzen 9 5950x
Ehh don't really worry about bottlenecks, but if you're just gaming get a Ryzen 9 5900x if you can instead because it's faster in games than Ryzen 9 5950x
Thank you
Np :)
im not sure if this is the right place for this but is 15 gigs enough for both warzone and fortnite like with updates and stuff like that?
Like 15gb of disk space? No. Not even close to storing warzone, that needs 60gb minimum not including the extra space it needs to download and extract. Fortnite needs 35gb minimum, again not including download space.
I meant for like with them downloaded and then the 15 gigs for like updates
We can't predict those game's updates
No one knows how big the next update is
It can be 20gb it can be 20mb
Yea and for all I know I could like warzone more and then I could delete fortnite but idk I’m very new to warzone so I don’t know
make the choice when you have to :P
Yea
Buy Seagate Barracuda Q1 SSD 240GB Internal Solid State Drive – 2.5 Inch SATA 6Gb/s for PC Laptop Upgrade 3D QLC NAND (ZA240CV1A001) online at low price in India on Amazon.in. Check out Seagate Barracuda Q1 SSD 240GB Internal Solid State Drive – 2.5 Inch SATA 6Gb/s for PC Laptop Upgrade 3D QLC NAND (ZA240CV1A001) reviews, ratings, features, spec...
Don't think so as no 240gb is ever good value lol, unless you bought in 5 years ago X)
I would ask @pallid orchid for recommendations as they are the same region and will know it better
ok thx
But some recommendations that are usually good are sn550 if you have an m.2 slot or mx500 for sata drives and save up the extra bit for 500gb drive 240 is quite small and worth the extra 5-10$(or equivalent) more
Np :)
ight i will save up
It's usually not too much more, but those drives might be stupidly priced over there, although decent in most regions
Whomst has summoned me
Also yep sn550 is best bang for tye buck in india
Its like 4-5k inr
India drives, no pcpp i cannot recommend without in region idk
Hence i summoned you
Definitely not
Local websites are annoying tho
then what shd i take?
true
Rawr from india tho hence why i summoned then 😎
What mobo are you using/ what pc are you upgrading?
im using msi h310m pro vh plus
im actually getting the ssd for bootup drive since my hdd is doing absolutely trash
Lemme look at the board 1 sec
ok
Doesnt seem to have an m.2 slot
Something like an mx500 if it's an okay price then
So my dad just got an SSD for his computer because the programs he needs start to slow on the HDD that is currently in it, we want to swap them, HDD for extra stuff and SSD for OS and a few apps, etc. The HDD has Windows it it and we want to out it on the SSD, would just wiping the HDD be the best solution?
They just checking jeez XD
i didnt mean to be rude, i just thought he shd hv asked me first. ukwim?
You can use marcium reflect to copy the hdd to the ssd iirc
You could keep the hdd for later if there's only one slot in the laptop, and clean install windows.
Don't won't to copy everything, though
also im sry if that was mean
It's a desktop
Some people don't know it's just in general and some people don't no much detail about it lol
You can probably keep it plugged in once you clean install windows on the SSD, as long as the boot order is correct
ok lemme check em thx for the help
ok true, im sry
Use windows media creation tool then and install a clean install on the ssd then
Is dine lol
That's what I was thinking, just wanted to be sure
Gl
How would you wipe the HD with Windows?
Format drive after installing on the ssd
Yeah, gonna get whatever important files off first
👍
And the other, "important" files
Oh btw @lunar onyx forgot to mention you might get better deals for the ssd on mdcomputers or primeabgb if you wanna check those
ight i will check em out rn thx
YW
whats the budget and how much storage?
i alr have it its just that there a problom with it
whats the problem
so I got a new ssd today and I wanted to transfer the data, but now I justhave 2 ssds with the same data
and I cant figure out how to erase the data on the slower ssd
so you want to wipe the old deive?
ya
what are your 2 ssds?
can you hop on vc?
i have an intel m.2(the one i want to wipe) and the new one is samsung 980 evo
download crystal disk info and it will say which is which
ohh then wipe the drive with less storage
im trying
okay so when you open file explorer, is c drive bigger or smaller
c is samller(the intel one)
Go into bios then select the 980 drive as boot
ok i need to restart i wont be able to type, give me a min
Np
@sour wadi i made it the 980 evo
???
the c is now the 980 evo
now what to do @sour wadi
jeez gimme a sec
ok
should i press start or should i change a setting in it
thanks so much it worked @sour wadi
np
just go ahead and format should be fine
i did
so now when i max out the storage on the 980 evo the rest of my downloads will go to the intel?
ehhh no youll have to make it manually go to the other drive afaik
what is afaik
as far as i know
980 evo doesnt exist
It's just called 980
I wasn't really paying to mutch attention lol mb they meant 980/pro or something

980 evo pretty poggy
whats the program that can copy data from one drive to another?
got a 6tb hdd and wanna transfer all my data from the 2tb
If it's just files and not an os just use file explorer, for os use marcium reflect
Iirc
is that the fastest way? LOL seems like that would take quite a bit of time
damn that is gonna be a fun process lol
Just do it and walk away or do something else lol
ye probably the best way XD
Are the WD Blue HDDs any good?
I know the Toshiba X300 are really good but I’m looking for better budget options for a friend
How is a seagate firecuda 520 1tb?
If you can get the 64mb cache version instead of 128mb they better
Meant fo the wd blue
Meant to reply to message just above mr1111
pretty sure there's no 128mb version then, from WD:
Was thinking of 256mb then, anyway the 64mb better right?
cmr is nice yes
ya
What are some recommended hard drives? Pretty sure I have a Seagate Barracuda 4TB and I want something faster as my main drive
Can you give up capacity or do you need the 4TB capacity?
I can give up some capacity, although I need about 2-3 TB
Steam games really do take up a lot of space, my god
Can you make do with 2TB?
Yeah that'll be good
Do you know if your motherboard has NVMe slots?
No, I don't. I'll check
What board is it?
I'm not sure since my computer is a prebuilt
What make and model?
Alienware Aurora R7 basic, made by Dell (I think, they own Alienware)
$150
Egads.
There's no guarantee you can get a faster drive that is at least 2TB in size for that price
I forgot that I got some extra money today, I can spend $250
https://www.newegg.com/pny-xlr8-cs3030-2tb/p/N82E16820177066?Item=N82E16820177066 Shipping might put it just over your budget, but that's the fastest 2TB NVMe drive I can find for $250
I thought Mushkin lost its luster years ago. Back in 2016 I had some of their RAM chips, but I didn't hear much about them in recent years.
If I wanted to buy more sata power cables how would I go about doing that
since you cant mix psu cables around
Your PSU doesn't have enough? Should have 5-6 on a string and 1-2 strings for a total of 10-12 ports?
uhh I misplaced the extra cables I think
Ah
Lemme see when I open my case lol I can’t remember. Just in case I don’t have the extra whats that next step
Look for my psu and try and find the cable that goes with it or what lol
So use a USB stick for installing Windows like normal?
You can open file explorer, right click the drive and format
Np

What am I looking at exactly here?
Buy Samsung Electronics (MZ-V8V500B/AM) 980 SSD 500GB - M.2 NVMe Interface Internal Solid State Drive with V-NAND Technology: Internal Solid State Drives - Amazon.com ✓ FREE DELIVERY possible on eligible purchases
Interesting
Pretty sure the SN550 RN4K is better
Tabbed under budget
But I'd have to check
Is there a cheap 2tb hdd that would be decent for storing a few games on thats around 40-60usd?
Trying to find one for a friend and he has a small budget
Barracuda 2tb should be about 50
my seagate external drive randomly stopped working for a moment, i scanned it with windows and nothing was wrong, it immediately started working fine
is that a sign its dying?
It could be, but it could also be part of the intermittent USB connection issues found on AMD platforms. A beta bios update might be out for your board that fixes that. If you're on Intel that's obviously not the problem.
You can check drive health using crystal disk info. https://crystalmark.info/redirect.php?product=CrystalDiskInfoInstaller
I'll check, thanks
Well if you were going to get the 4tb version you can get the x300 for that price and i would get that
For nas
Ahh I'm not sure about nas specific drives but don't see why a x300 wouldn't be just as good
Yeah
hello all.
Need of assistance. I built a PC back in 2015 with two 2.5GB 120Gb ssd internal disk drives. I want to get new 1-2TB SSD's. Any recommendations? I just need to have more capacity for win10 upgrade and updates.
N300 price recently hasn't been great but n300 is basically the nas varient of x300
What motherboard do you have?
yeah its ntb
If you were to add a drive to your pc without a specific use in mind, just for additional overhead. Would you go SSD or HDD? I have a couple drives installed already, the one I see filling up is my 1tb crucial P5 I use for steam. Was looking at adding a crucial mx500 1-2tb, but the WD Black HDD at 4tb is staring at me from the other corner of the room 😂
Hindsight, I already have a HDD installed for media storage. I should just get an additional SSD… I think I made up my mind thinking out loud lol.
I mean if you have the budget ssd but if you need more hdd lol
Like a light bulb clicked, why would I buy more hdd I got a seagate 4tb when they were on sale for like $70. If gaming overflow is my main concern currently SSD makes more sense. Sometimes you have to think out loud before your brain makes any sense 😂
If money wasn’t an issue I’d upgrade my P5 to a 2tb nvme but those get pretty expensive
ehh i mean if you dont mind waiting a sec for your games i would do hdd
also p5 is spensive
do you not have 2 m.2 slots on the mobo btw?
I have both occupied, wd black sn750 for a boot drive. Try to keep games off that one as I also record to it
Use the 4tb seagate to store the recordings later after clipping and editing what not. At least that’s the plan. I’m still learning
fair enough lol
I also like to be organized. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed or not, but Windows OS filing isn’t what I’d call “organized”… 😂
Lol
Both of my nvme drives (1tb each) the sn750 and the P5 I only paid around $100 for. Gotta get that sale shopping my man 🤪
Ohh nice
When using the windows back up feature does it require an empty drive or would any hard drive work
It prefers an empty drive but you can use one that isn't

HEY I NEED HELP PLS
with?
He’s getting help in another channel
ik
i asked him the same question there as well
lol
Hi, I wanted to know if it was worth buying a wd easystore 14 tb external hard drive. I'm using it to save my video recordings and downloads since I'm running out of storage space.
is the storage helping you out on a day to day basis?
I have a external 4tb hard drive, it has some of my recordings and downloads. I don't travel that much but I use it to record gameplay, store downloads and projects. Thank you for responding back
oh i have been told that the pilot - e is a great ssd, but others tell me that sn550 is better (both 1tb compacity). i just kinda wanna find out which NVME ssd i should purchse
Sn550 better rand yee
SN750 only $10 more on Newegg compared to the sn550
Sn750 has worse rand than the sn550
That’s interesting 🤔 the more you know
What benchmark does Toms hardware use? Only curious, one of those “on paper” vs actual use things…
Well they're measuring rand performance which is real world performance i assume they use crystal disk mark but I'm not sure
There’s so many variables to benchmarks and real world use lol. That’s the first I’ve seen that type of disparity of what’s presumably a lower tier product. That’s pretty awesome though if real world performance is that much better
Userbenchmark pulls figures out of their ass btw
Well that was an example sorry. I have heard that before. Just going down the top google links that seems to be the trend though 🤷♂️
It’s just one of those things. I have a 750 and I was looking at 550 also and every thing I pulled for reference while shopping reflected the opposite of toms results. I’ve had good WD drives in the past so that’s why they were the two on my radar when I built my pc last winter
Oof
The 550 beats the 750
I’ve been learning a lot over the last 6 months ish. Only recently jumped into the SSD world
Tbf the sn750 beats the 550 in theoretical "up to" speeds but up to speeds can technically be 0mb/s
Seems like one of those situations where one product is better on paper where as practical the other is better. At the time it was like a $10 difference also, so I trusted the on paper data. Without real world testing it all seems like a crap shoot if I’m being perfectly honest 😂
Where as my choice in 2.5” SSD was solely based on j2c recommendation crucial mx500 and not any other research and hey that choice turned out for the better 😂😂😂 just can’t win sometimes.
Yeah it's a bit weird but sure it's not the end of the world lol
Mx500 would be my and most other peoples go to 2.5" ssd yeah it's pretty nice
Funny how that works, put time into researching one product that ends up superior on paper but inferior in practice. Meanwhile just going off the random suggestion of a tech tuber ends up being a good choice 😂 woe is me… all good in the end. My brain does want to know why. Natural curiosity in me. Is it an optimization issue? Is the “faster” drive thermal throttling?
I'm not sure but something to do with the controller or nand
s31 gold big cute
Yeah but mx500 more cost friendly
yeah but also iirc mx500 hasnt been updated since like 2017 and has changed nand and controllers several times

I generally don’t recommend a mx500
yeah
micron ssds cringe anyways imo
literally just spend like $5 more and get samsung since they are the only good ssd maker that cares about sata at all
no one else has released anything sata since like 2018-19
870 evo is pog and uses good nand
870evo is pog
but p sure there's some micron 128L nand out there somewhere now
wait
there's micron 176L nand now
yes but it's not going into any consumer sata ssds
the only people doing any sata stuff are the no name dramless garbage drives, samsung's shockingly good sata ssds, and then the weird ppl like team making garbage 16tb consumer sata drives
which are fun but like
micron 3400 is a proof of concept for now >:P
What’s the deal with that Exadrive thing
density is cool
i considered getting one actually
but its so slow that it negates any real world use case for us
right now sweet spot is samsung 2.5 inch pcie 4 drives
let me find model number
hm
we have some 15tb micron drives
MZWLJ15THALA-00007
wait oops those are the samsung part numbers
oh fun one
or not of those drives but a lot of samsung pcie 4
How do those get connected, directly into a PCIe slot?
nvme backplane
they're just 2.5 inch drives
nvme backplane?
ye
we use the pm983 for the majority of our servers and the performance ones use the pm1735
and the thiccies use the pm1733
like u know the front of servers
where the drives go in
they connect to a backplane
Oh it's u.2
that makes more sense
like exact same size as a normal 870 evo
its just nvme now
pm983 god tier ssd tho
nice cache drives?
mmm
and bench
writes seem a bit smol?
yes but these are never single drive
ah
cache drives don't really care about drive failures?
what do you use them for then?
just os drives
raid 0 os drives? huh
the 15tb ones have 21pbw rated indurance

ye if a server goes down we just redeploy
damn
if smart gets low we hot migrate
u should get some pm983 for yourself
i found some 1tb ones for $100 a drive
need u.2 converters tho prob
yeah
but is worth

paying basically budget nvme pricing for enterprise drive
no brainer
hmm
like probs best drive it compares to is mp34 price wise
and that drive is like
using nand they scraped off the factory floor

pm983 has samsungs best nand
:p
its a good drive
im buying 20 or so for my personal servers soon

need 20tb nvme
20x20tb
well uh
just saw this video pop up

hm
i think the new ssd tech is interesting
looking forward to seeing what actual perf will be like
mm
but a lot of our machines are coffee lake still lol
or whatever 8th gen i7 was
we have hundreds of servers running the xeon version of the i7 8700
I’m seeing more like $25-30+ price difference between Samsung evo and mx500 🤷♂️
At 1tb
id pay an extra $20 for samsung tbh
lili sammy shill things

i mean i wouldnt recommend a sata ssd period
but if ur gonna get one it might as well be good
samsung literally only company that cares at all abt sata
Older PCs with no m.2 and only sata, laptops without m.2 and only a 2.5in sata bay
Don't think my board has any bios updates to support any m.2
older pcs can get a $5 expansion card
sata basically only good for laptop upgrades
What if they can't get an expansion card
as long as they have a pcie x1 slot free they're ballin

Say they have a sound card, wifi card, and a Ethernet card already
which basically every oem pc has
if they have a sound card and an ethernet card then they give up one of the two
:p
Dunno tbh
775 board?
What if they were running sli with sound card and wifi card
Gigabit Ethernet has been around for a while
Is that 2nd gen core
yes
Ah
if ur running below that then imo your priority should be upgrading the rest of the system
I don't think that's the case
What if it's a retro gaming pc
i use cf cards for that
since sata ssds are actually too fast and can crash the pc
They want the authentic experience

I was looking at gah97md3h and it had a bios update that enabled support for m.2 drives
Lol
basically everyone i know draws the line at storage
hotswappable cf cards too good
Heh
It would be nice if my board didn't have PCI slots in the middle
I have a wifi card in the bottom slot and my GPU in the top slot, middle two are pci
but yeah i feel like saying "just get sata" is takine the easy way out most of the time
a lot more fun to add in nvme
hell thats what my media server is doing rn
i have uhhh
4x10gbit card and nvme expansion card and raid controller and a 1050ti
so im close to using everything lol
...
Gaming
wow this drive is a speedster
i didnt think it would be as fast as it is
LMAO THE WRITE
nvm

reads lookin fine tho
As long as it can read
this is a weird bench
Literacy rates among ssds are trending up
Mm
Interesting writes
ikr
Looks like my drive
Damn
running again
its some kioxia oem drive i got for free
Neat
idk if this is expected

yea sandisk makes alrite stuff
@minor sun do u know who uses who
like does wd use sandisk nand or does sandisk use wd nand
Not sure
im 90% sure wd just uses sandisk stuff or at least bought their engineering team
I don't think it's a very impressive drive
since i have some sandisk accelerators from 2008
Yea I believe it's WD that uses SanDisk nand
I was wondering if I should use the drive out of the HP for my OS on the computer I built recently for now and then just put a laptop hard drive in its place but the hp is a pretty slow computer, it should have as little impedance as possible to run okay
give it a $10 60gb ssd

I might tbh
I have some cash money now to do stuff with
I want to get a Quadro 600 or k620 or something like that to put in my grandma's old Phenom II 955 machine
lmao noo
At least they have displayport, that wouldn't be bad for just having something to output video at $10
The machine's life from here on out would probably be spent on playing old games
Not too old tbh, it supports DX11 natively
Any suggestions for budget or low priced ssds? Preferably 500gb
Sn550 if nvme, mx500 for sata

how many ssd guides do i have to make to get techie
idk i own an ipad mini
that alone should be enough
If I can find the 970 evo plus for $100 cad, and the sn550 for $75 cad, should I pay the extra 25 for faster speeds? I’m mainly wanting it for faster loading times and transferring of files
Nothing heavy
infinite
evo plus isn't really faster than sn550 for most people
Sn550
anybody super familiar with cloning ssds ?
use macruim reflect
Learning how to install an SSD without starting from scratch means you can get your PC back up and running again as though nothing has happened. Except everything will be just that little bit quicker! Switching from a laggardly hard drive to a modern SSD will make a huge difference to the responsiveness and performance of your gaming PC. But sta...
i've done a few clones before, but this time has me stumped lol
i'm trying to use acronis because i've used it before, and i'm cloning at m.2 to another m.2, but the process just stops after i choose my destination drive
try macrium
ill give it a shot tonight ! Thanks
np
which drive should i get? the 980 or the 970 evo plus? do they both have the qlc cache?
P31 gold
what all is available there
?
SN850?
Reason: Duplicated text
wow
srry for long link
sata ssd?
m.2 is a form factor... sata m.2 drives exist
yes but the problem is that there are sata ssds too
but some drives go away
nvme isnt a form factor
some are sata m.2
m.2 is a form factor
do you want an nvme drive or a sata drive
nvme
BEANS
I wouldnt really buy any one of the drives on staples
bottom line what should i get 970 evo plus or 980
way too over priced
have people here stopped crushing on the mp34
The evo plus is a better drive
mp34?
ehhhh its an OK drive
has decently fat tbw for a consumer drive
p31 gold best
does the efvo plus have a cache?
it does have dram
just nice to have
still outperforms many other drives
thank you for you help
Ohh really? That's seq tho not rand right?
The mp34 has 3x endurance than p31?
Or was that just an example lol
Interesting
Didn't you used to say that they fudged the number and the mp34 would barely last that long?
:P
yes it's 100% that the drive will die before then
but it's rated to that
so you can just get it swapped
lol
ez zfs write cache
Does allocation matter on exfat, or does having the wrong allocation break anything?
Looking to store 30gb files on a drive, should I set allocation size to 32kb or leave it at default?
The correct allocation size makes transferring quicker, right?
555 bad sectors....cause for concern or no
um, looks like the drive is nearly completely dead?
Perhaps, how accurate is hdd sentinel anyway with predicting life spans
Predicting life span is pretty wacky, but they won't lie about smart data
reallocated sector count is 555 and and current pending sector count is 1038
very
dunno when it says like 2000 days
when does it say that
my drive
ur drive has brain damage
im p sure ur smart is just corrupted
what does smartctl say
Dunno, uninstalled hd sentinel because open on startup is stoopid
So been getting disk errors on my old OCZ SSD. Just got a WD SN550 that i got in today. Was using the cloning software (the OCZ is my C: drive) and it's stuck at disk cloning process " Estimated Time left: Less than 1 minute"
Been at this spot for like 20 minutes and i'm suspecting it's because of ya know, the reason why i'm replacing the drive. Disk error. What to do?
ive got a 2tb external drive thats starting to have issues so im looking to buy an internal hdd 2tb, any reccomendations? was thinking seagate barracuda
that is a good hdd
cool thanks
I'm personally thinking a WD Blue hard drive would be a nice option
Not looking to buy any hard drives for now though, I got a 2TB HGST out of an eBay computer and a 1TB barracuda from my own pc
dont lol
and 2tb is kinda not best deal rn
if you can, get a 4tb hdd
can get toshiba x300 which is great perf and reliability
with bonus of 4tb drives being more resilient most of the time
