Gaming Headsets Bad Because

1. Poor Stereo Imaging which leads to inaccurate positional audio in games
2. Poor Soundstaging, additional inaccuracy in positional audio
3. Bad driver tuning which tends to put emphasis on Bass which isn't good for gaming except for immersion.
4. USB Dongles that implement crappy 7.1 Surround that does not help with audio accuracy in games.

If you buy a Combo Unit, if one piece of the combo fails, then you have to buy a whole new unit.

If you buy a separated setup, one device failing doesn't mean you have to buy a full new setup.
