XLR sends the actual audio signal whereas usb sends a digital signal. To connect to a pc you need a digital signal eventually. Usb mics have what is called an adc or analog to digital converter which xlr mics do not have so you would need an interface to convert the signal. XLR mics are found in the professional audio scene but can be expensive for entry level

An interface should have a preamp, essentially the raw signal of a mic is very low so a preamp will boost it and should do so adding minimal noise in the signal. Some people will put an additional preamp or mic activator in the line before the interface to give a bit of an extra boost, you would do this for some mics that are extremely quiet notably the sm7b

Did you do this per the instructions? After flashing the new firmware, hold Fn1+ Z + J together for 5 seconds to do the factory reset. You are now good to go.
