your ram will move into any modern board though so you have that going for you
z370 and z390 are also 1151 but intel locked out the ability to run older cpu's on those boards.
z170 and z270 support intel 6th and 7th gen. There are hacks for some of those boards that you can use to get 8th and 9th gen to run on them, but they also require joining certain pins and blocking other pins as well as bios modification that is a bit beyond what the average user would be able to do.
here is a big question then
well big for me
if i went AMD would i have to do anything special for hooking up and reading on the GPU and SSDs?
and will the ram connect up to that
yeah
retail or oem ebay license
I recently went from Core i5 to AMD without reinstalling. It's possible with a retail license
retail
well it was when win 7 gave the free upgrade to 10
or what ever that last OS was
I have never tried to move a windows 7 upgrade to another system but with retail windows 10 its easy to move. usually doesnt require a reinstall. Ultimately its up to microsoft though. Usually if you try and activate and the automated system doesnt work you just give them a call and they will give you the numbers to enter and make it work.
ok
if anything, i have disc on my phone, ill be back for help if i do a upgreade and hit snags lol
ya, with mine I call the number and it texts me a link that takes a picture of the activation screen and spits out the numbers I need to activate
whats the diffrence in the 9900s?
the 9900k, kf, ks
and at that price should i just go 3900x?
9900k has a couple of revisions. the regularly 9900k has the original version and the new R0 stepping. the Kf is a 9900k without integrated graphics. the ks is the 9900k but with all cores boosting to 5ghz.
got you
basically intel has been having issues with making enough chips so they started selling the ones that had non functional graphics, and the ones that binned as running all cores at 5ghz got held and are being sold for more money.
I like the amd chips personally, but they are still having some teething issues. primarily boost clocks and ram running at xmp speeds without needing some tweaking
Yeah, they don't hit full boost clocks for sure
looking around its like $750 min for a CPU and mobo combo with the 9900k
Long story short a bent pin caused this, works fine as far as I can tell(?)
whats a good and not bank breaking board for a 9900k?
So lucky that processor works fine
did you fix the pin
Is it dead for overclocking
if it works, it works
Would you guys reccommend even trying it?
those things have a tremendous amount of ground and power pins. most of the ones in the same general area all touch the same plane so usually unless its one of the pins that is part of the memory controller or the pcie lanes you dont have issues
so it's just paranoia knowing what's under the pins and what it looks like
Pretty much
Really
if it works, it's fine
you may find at some point that you have a ram slot that doesnt work if it was part of the memory controller
It hurts because it's an 8600k but it's a little relieving to know it's mostly in my head
doesn't Intel show the pin layout on their website?
@elfin warren what about the z390 gaming pro carbon from MSI?
thats a couple of pins. glad it didnt break anything
That's a good board also
they don't show pin layout that I have seen. I know at one point buildzoid was sanding down an intel cpu trying to figure out what some of the pins are
but you get big sections of the cpu, like 40 or 50 pins all together that will be power, or ground. if you get bent pins in those areas it doesnt hurt anything
its unsettling though
big issues come when ground pins touch power pins if they get bent
thats usually ded
sorry to pester, but whats the diffrence in the Z390 and the B360 boards
z390 boards allow overclocking and work out of the box with 9th gen cpus. also they have the best vrm designed for 9900k's. b360 has no overclocking limited to 2666 ram I think, and not really meant for high end cpu's
b360 is a cut down z370
thanks
b365 is the successor to b360.
there is a pinout. looks like the area you got vcc pins
but I would have to count and thats too hard
I just guesstimated
looking into the 9900k and MSI Pro carbon mobo
NEWEGG HAS A BUNDLE FOR CHEAPER
but its the tomahawk board
anyone have concerns about that? i know its legit the most popular board in the AMD side with the B450
Didn't expect you to pull up the chart but appreciated, I'm gonna give it to a friend who doesn't mind as they probably will just run it stock for gaming because I'd feel bad selling it off even if I told the buyer about damage
what are the diffrent pieces of a CPU called?
like for instance
looking at an i9, the silver plate that thermal paste normally goes on with the writing on it telling you the CPU specs. Whats that called?
and the gold contact points going into the socket
whats that?
also is there anything needed to be asked if looking in a used market at a CPU for concerns on people selling
long story short
Used Market? Pics of the LGA
i found another 9900k for sale for $300 said like new but used
Ask why they upgraded and where it came from
thats what im doing
just thrown in a loop on why changing from a 9900k only thing i can think of better honestly is maybe the ks or going threadripper
so im very skeptical, just didnt know part names to ask the questions lol
oh whats the LGA?
ah
9900K are known to have bulged IHS
like from the pic yesterday
To get best cooling you need to lap them
lap?
Yeah, sand it down to be flat
dose it make that much of a diffrence?
10+C yeah
wow
im waiting to hear back with some hopeful answers, thanks for the insight and help
YW
So I'm looking to upgrade RAM, would this be the best at the price point? CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3600 (PC4 28800) Desktop Memory Model CMK32GX4M2K3600C16 https://www.newegg.com/product/N82E16820236544?ignorebbr=1&m_ver=1
FI that's for an AMD build yes, but the cooler isn't needed for the extra money
It is for a 3800x build and the cooler didn't see like a huge upcharge
Yeah, for CL16 in that quantity that's not bad
Thanks for the 2nd opinion
Well its a bit expensive
is i5-9600K worth it, or should i get something from AMD
I say AMD
any equalvilents?
k i'll use that
Note: the ryzen 5 3000 series need x570 motherboards which are more expensive
i'll use ryzen 7
Ryzen 3000 doesn't need X570 mobos
k guys
New year new me, massive upgrade from what I had before
is that 256 mb ddr2?
or amd
for more price/performance
Oh
Hm
well
I'd say the 9400f
but idk much about intel chips
and how they all compare to eachother
for amd?
2700x
or normal 3600
3600 is better for gaming and the 2700 is better for streaming
i would say the b450 tomahawk or the b450 tomahawk pro if you get the 3600 do the pro
like 115
it might have changed a bit but there very good amd budget boards
Can't go wrong with neither
depends
2700x will save you like 30 bucks
do you live near a microcenter
I can make you a list if u want
ye
alright
if i where you i would go for a bit of a cheaper case and put the extra money towards something else
ill show you a nice case
yeah and i can send you a link for faster ram if your going for ryzen
nope
with amd cpus you want like 3200 minimum speeds cause the faster ram the more performace but with intel you can go for a bit slower ram
its not pretty looking but it does the job
that latency on those is pretty bad
3200 cl16 would probably be similar to that
you'd want to keep tighter timings than that
but at the same time its only 65 bucks
3600 CL19 sucks
over CL18 on 3600 RAM you go out of sync with the IF
Spend the extra $10 and get RAM that can OC well to 3466 or 3600 CL16
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/gLGxFT/crucial-ballistix-sport-lt-16-gb-2-x-8-gb-ddr4-3200-memory-bls2k8g4d32aesbk
Or spend the extra $15 to get RAM that is 3600 CL16
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/jBZzK8/gskill-ripjaws-v-16-gb-2-x-8-gb-ddr4-3600-memory-f4-3600c16d-16gvkc
New build using Gigabyte Z390M Gaming mobo. I have tried multiple BIOS versions but cannot gain RGB control via the Fusion 2.0 or Ambient LED applications. I understand the RGB software and control is lacking, but at this point it's literally not working at all. Looking for any suggestions before I start the return process. TIA
@long geyser that's not how IF on AMD works. Only related to RAM speed, not timings. Not arguing about the CL19, that is indeed poor RAM. Also, with gear down mode enabled, it will run at CL20 rather than CL19.
Guys im hella dumb but whats a good motherboard for a r5 3600x?
MSI B450 Max, B450 Tomahawk those kinds of things.
Okay thanks man
Hello! I bought an AMD A6 6600k, does anyone have any suggestions for a CPU Cooler, I bought the CPU used and it didn't come with the cooler.
@strange saffron guessing it should be fairly cheap?
considering the 65tdp and the 74c coremax temp of that cpu. something like the deepcool gammaxx 400 should be plenty
it is not a pretty cooler, but it should do the job
@strange saffron do you mean a8-6600k?
Hey guys my 3600x at idle is h itting 40-60 celcius at idle
is that normal or should I tinker the fan curve?
That's pretty high. Anything above 45 is high got an idle
I know this isn’t a trouble shooting chat but could someone help me right fast with a problem I’m having with a fresh build?
What's up
So I've had this issue for over a week now. Like 90% of GSkill ram sets have sold out in the UK, and I don't want to order from the US because of import fees on top of the nightmare returning will be. There is very little in the way of 3600 Mhz CL16 ram left.
So my options are, all 2x8gb kits, £100 for Crucial ballistix elite from the Amazon Warehouse (used - like new), £136 Gskill trident z neo from a very dodgy Czech company, or G skill ripjaws V for £166 from Amazon
Is it worth just biting the bullet and paying the 166?
How much ram you got now?
If you have good ram I’d wait til things go back in stock
But idk the uk market so idk if that’s a good price of not
UK prices are the same as US. I.e something costing $700 always costs exactly £700 here. Difference is that £1 is $1.30 so it costs 30% more.
Not usually worth importing either because 20% VAT on imports and the shipping usually isnt cheap either
And it's essential I get this ram.
Well then if amazon is an easy return for you I’d try that
Otherwise I’d look for a tech store nearby and see what they have in stock. I can get 16gb 3200 for 80 bucks over here. 60 if it’s still on sale
Not sure about the cost of 3600 over here tho
Try amazon and hope for the best, if not, return it
If you’re fine with that risk
Yeah its pretty risky going for amazon warehouse
Yeah but in my experience Amazon is also the easiest online retailer to return to. But again it may be diff in the uk
@meager scarab I have an MSI x570 mpg gaming plus mother board. I was getting an LED error light for my CPU so I replaced it with a new CPU. Which solved that problem. But now the other 3 lights are on for boot, vga, and ram. Any ideas on what I could have done wrong?
Possible power issue or bad motherboard. Those lights indicate that none of the items are detected
Could also be a CPU issue still if the pins got bent and it's not POSTing
I went through two CPUs and mobos with my build before realizing I had a PSU issue. If you have access to another PSU, maybe borrow from a friend, test that
Yeah, there are ways to test it also. Jumper the green and black wire with a Paperclip on the 24 pin connector, unplugged from the motherboard. That will turn it on and you can see if fans, etc spin
Or, also just mentioning what model it is can determine whether it's good or not. As a note tho, I'd return the MSI x570 gaming plus for a better mobo if you want to go thro the hassle. It really isn't a good x570 board. MSI done goof on almost all of their x570 boards
What are some good x570 boards? Excluding high end.
ASUS TUF Gaming and Gigabyte Aorus Elite
Those have the best VRMs
ASRock Steel Legend isn't bad either
Had someone on Reddit recommend getting a b450 Max.
TUF WiFi gaming is the best sub$300 board
Quality and feature wise
The other two are great also
Is there a meaningful difference between Intel and realtek LAN?
Not really, unless you want to get super nitpicky
Prime P
That's another good board, no wifi tho
$150 tho, one of the cheapest x570
And funnily enough, is one of the best in cheap/cheap-ish boards
WiFi is kind of a must right now for me. Hardwire is not available throughout most of my house.
Definitely get the TUF then
How much is the tuf? Might be worth getting add in card
$189 AC1200 wifi
So could save a small amount. But meh, not worth it probably
it's fast as hell, i have similar wifi on my board
if it would just arrive already
maybe tomorrow
Wait so what's the difference between 450 and 570?
Main difference is pcie 4.0 support
X570 generally has better vrms, more power phase and such for overclocking as well
But you can still expect decent overclocks on low-mid-range cpus on 450
Woah really X570 has m.2's that don't take sata
Yes
Did not know that's p cool
WIth a 3000 series Ryzen
...My desktop is so ancient pretty much for anything upgradable, even the best options are already nearly obsolete; Sandy Bridge i5 3.3ghz on a H61 mobo, Fermi (GTX 465) GPU, non-ssd hdd - I’d like to start upgrading it a part at a time so my best guess @ a solution would be some sort of m.2 adapter to pci-e slots or Sata, and some sort of gpu compatible with the latest dx, OpenGL, and OpenCV specs but the nVidia gpu’s seem to be all way above an affordable price range and I’m not at all familiar with the current AMD models. —Any recommendations?
CPU RAM and MOBO will all have to be at the same time and your biggest expense all other parts can be done one at a time
What is an affordable price range? Decent GPU is $200
What's the cheapest mobo that's Intel Xeon E5-2630 v2 compatible?
might need to wait for EK to come online I'm not sure
anyone have experience with "CMW16GX4M2K3600C16" it's 3600cl16 corsair vengeance its on my motherboards qvl list but im getting so many problems getting it to work well with my system. ASUS ROG maxims xi hero (wifi). When I first got the kit and installed it it would keep restarting because of memory training so i lowered the vccio and vccsa to 1.1 and it would only restart more than once on restart, that was a month ago. Now I got a blue screen with page_fault_in_nonpaged_area after playing league and it does 4+ more restarts and i assume is the memory training. It then says "The system has posted in safe mode" because of system instability. it doesnt stop doing it after every restart. i can f1 to get into bios set up and press escape to exit to go into windows but still restarts multiple times during restart/cold boot. i cant tell if its a memory issue, motherboard issue or what. doing a memory diagnostic comes out with no problems detected.
are you running it at 3600?
and what frequency is the cpu at?
might try going to 1.05 on vccio vccsa
@copper solar also do you have MCH full check enabled?
i think i found the stick that was causing problems
nice
im running 8x2
testing each stick individually
stick #1 works fine alone
stick #2 is doing memory training everytime i restart
that's a lot of 2gb sticks
and only running at 1066
tbh that is the best method and much faster than running memory checks
thats why i dont even run them
that looks awesome for 8gs
but wrong timings
not real?
this is what it was originally on both sticks, this is the working non messed up stick
tested in all ram slots, working just fine no re-memory training
huh and has those crazy timings
yeah
and it doesnt show anything weird in bios?
like you could try manually setting the timings in bios
and disable MCH full check
That's what shows up with the weird stick of ram is connected. The other stick works just fine. Just going to send it back to Newegg for replacement.
Further making me not want to order from Newegg lol

what does that have to do with newegg?
@restive wedge so your lack of understanding of statistics causes you to blame newegg for it?
i am honestly impressed about that.
because i am fairly certain my brain would crash by doing that :)
well if your pc is boot failure and suggesting to do safe mode while inserting the new ram.. maybe something really wrong with it.. is it always like that even if your restart? again ?
maybe u dint buy same kit
maybe since another one is running cl 15 xD your cl 16 one is copying it xD 15 15 15 ... and its not stable... are those same kit? maybe this is your kit CMW16GX4M2C3600C15
not CMW16GX4M2K3600C16

whats a good cpu under 250$?
guess what would depend on what you want. amd/intel.
im having trouble upgrading my ram for my laptop i have an nitro acer 5 but not to sure if i should buy just any random ram stick or if i should get something a little better
or something that matchs my model nuber
something that matches your model
try and see if there is a list of known sticks that work with it @golden forge
simply to save you the potential headache
i dont even know where i would for a list of them in the first place
look
thats my problem
on the support page for the laptop :)
ok ty i found it out just gotta look for something on amazon thats better priced compared to company prices
https://pcpartpicker.com/products/memory/ <- try and paste in the model numbers you are looking at there
in the field just above the "add from filter" button
(upper-ish right hand side)
i did nothing popped up
post the model here?
Nitro AN515-53
no, i meant the ram model :)
hence why i linked you the pcpartpicker memory page :)
oh
this should be it Crucial 8GB Single DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) DR x8 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT8G4SFD824A
that what you are looking for?
does your laptop have a free slot?
yeah i have 2 one is being used as of right now
so, what you are looking for is a single 8 gig stick
i cant use a 16
memory generally works best in pairs
you want the short or long answer to that?
nvm hehe its just cheaper for me to buy another 8 i guess but ty for the help
i think you misunderstood
oh
right now, you have 1*8gig correct?
mhm
so, to get you to a total of 16 gigs.
yes
buying 1 more 8 gig stick is the way to go
ok ty
however.
try and make certain you get what is called a matched pair (by having identical sticks)
ok
https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Single-PC4-19200-SODIMM-260-Pin/dp/B019FREJOQ <- this is the model you linked earlier
let me check my model inside real quick
that is enough, give me a moment
Ok
hm, cant find enough reliable info actually (i am surprised tbh)
so i am screwed
Nah
you comfortable with unplugging it and taking a photo of the other side?
yeah
please do :)
wtf
that single specific one bekora
not saying it is the right choice
so thats why its so much
I understand but they also said Newegg. And for half the price
would there any other sticks i could possibly use besides this one or no
but you jumped the gun on the next part, which was supposed to be a talk about price vs warranty etc
in theory anything "can" work
in practice, it can be a downright nightmare
It's 2666mhz CL19 ram
with a potential "picky" board Bekora
again, in theory, it will work with any stick
Timings are 19-19-19
so i guess i end up buying the same one
the newegg option is the "sane/logical" option
or, you switch to a new pair. But again, a list of supported modules is strongly recommended.
all i care about is my fps in games thats it
nothing else
i do care about my computer not getting screwed
or hammered into the ground
there is no guarantee that this will help much
true
WIth a 1050, you'll be at low-med settings in new games
yeah
and factoring in that it is a laptop
the only high res game i play is destiny 2
there is not much headroom (thermally) for it
i would strongly recommend that you contact their support and ask about ram
basically: Hello, i have XYZ model of laptop from you. What specific ram models work with that laptop
i used this website to see what i could use https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Acer/nitro-5-an515-53#MEMORYFilters
ask the manufacturer of your laptop (Acer)
um ok
just saying :)
yeah but i dont wanna talk to poeple who i can hardly understand what there saying
thats just a migrane
you can post what i said above
ok
just replace the XYZ with your actual laptop model :)
you are very welcome :) best of luck:)
so like, intels 10nm mobile procs support 3733mhz ddr4.
crazy
considering all mobile laptops will use no more than 2666mhz ram lmao
Intel® Core™ i5-1030G4 Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.50 GHz) quick reference guide including specifications, features, pricing, compatibility, design documentation, ordering codes, spec codes and more.
base frequency of 700mhz, thats crazy
hm? what do you find crazy about that?
very power efficient
very epic
usually, intels mobile cpu base clocks are not that low, so i thought it was neat
look up speedstep and related technologies
fair enough :)
Do I just have to have a sata cable in the HDD for it to work
power too
That's what I thought because I was taking my old mobo out and I remember talking a power cable out of it but I can't find it now
the power cable usually stays attached to the PSU lol
Possible to turn off z390 master Q code display and led indicators?
short of physically cutting tracers... not that i know of lol
anyone got a budget 16gb ddr4 memory? as fast as possible pls
mfw i bought a 3200G for budget purposes but then I found the official 1600 AF listing on Amazon
and now have to wait for returns to happen and money to come back

I mean why 3200g anyways? R3 1200 is $60 and is same perf as 3200g (edit: with an OC). You're planning on getting the 1600 AF so you dont need an iGPU
@long geyser because uh
at some point
I wasn't planning on the 1600 AF

many decisions were made
not all of them were good
well oof
any suggestions on what b-die ram I should get? (within $120)
Usually 3200c14 2x8 is $100, cheapest on newegg rn is $120, but there are a few other good options like
So, I have a dumb question, is Newegg going to have the Ryzen 5 1600 AF cpu or is it an Amazon exclusive? Specifically the AF chip.
considering that the reason it exist at all is that AMD has stopped making the die that was in the original 1600. It is just a question of time.
@full folio
so i put a new mobo in my pc and now when i play games and there is a high pitched noise it buzzes are my headphones broken or is there something that i missed
also my headphones never have done it with my old mobo
front
Front is usually bad quality. Try the back
Lots of electical noise gets to the front 3.5mm audio jacks unless it's shielded on the mobo and the case cables are well shielded as well
And thus causes the buzzing
its usb
Then it may not be providing the full amount of power to the headset through the front port. Or there is electrical noise causing corruption to the data (tho I feel like this would be a bit more catastrophic for non analog devices, but still could be it)
what parts/platforms are people using in their main gaming rigs these days ?
AMD. AMD. And AMD.
Whether you want high end or budget, AMD.
CPU wise that is, GPU wise high end is still Nvidia, low to "good" end is a mix of Nvidia and AMD, primarily whether you require NVENC or not.
It should be fine 🙂
thx
Is the MSI X470 Gaming Pro AMD AM4 Motherboard good
Or is there a good sub $100 full atx mobo lol
b450 gaming plus on sale, maybe a similar msi b450
Theres no need to go for a 470/570 over a B450 for less than a 3900x unless you somehow find it cheaper.
A b450 can’t use a 2600x though right
Also my goal is looks, lots of pcie, and upgradability. I’m currently running a 2600 but I want to get a better cpu later (maybe the 4K series if it’s am4 and better enough)
Whatever gave you the impression a B450 couldn't take a 2600x? That's a ludicrous suggestion.
Does anybody with a super beefy CPU and StarCraft II mind running a benchmark on the arcade for me?
Someone told me that they couldn’t take any x series
in what context @crude path ?
In that if the cpu has an x on it you need a mobo with x on it or 570 or above or something
Wish I knew that before I got the 2600 lol
2600x was 10 bucks more
that "someone" can be added to the list of people "that dont know what they are talking about"
or removed from the "know what they are talking about" one. which is the shorter one
It’s ok I have now called out that someone for feeding me wrong info
Does mobo spec matter for oc a cpu?
question... i have a 7th gen i7-7700 i need a new motherboard the chip set is an LGA 1151 what motherboard chipset i need ie z270 or h270... ive looked on newegg and amazon but before i spend 100+ dollar i want to make sure the cpu and mobo are compatible... this is what i want to get
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XSYZ968/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_4?smid=A3EEXTUSWX65VP&psc=1
Any z270 will do, you could find one for $60-100 used/new. IMO - 7700's sell for more than they're worth on the used market, take that money and go 3600 or equivalent.
damn you werent lying imma finese to do that
I'm doing the same with my 7700k - no idea why the market price is what is is lol
not gonna complain though and before i bought this pc i saw amazon has really cheap ryzen cpus
me: uses DDR4-2400 on my ryzen 7 2700 desktop, had it laying around, can't buy 3200 for a long time
at least i have a CPU that doesn't completely suck~
i was using haswell i5-4590 before
i'm also using my old 256GB SATA M.2 drive that i bought ages ago, because it's an SSD and why not
https://www.newegg.com/asrock-x570-phantom-gaming-4/p/N82E16813157884?Item=N82E16813157884 what ram is best for this motherboard
is a ryzen 9 3900 overkill for games like rainbow six siegeamd csgo?
yes
If you're just gaming with your system a 3600 is plenty sufficient for any game
ok ill probably get a ryzen 7 3800
In what ways is the 2600 better than the 1600X ?
Zen and zen+ is the major difference I guess
2000 series has a very slight IPC increase compared to 1000 series
@fleet inlet imagine this ok the 2400G is pretty much the same performance as the 1600 and the X model is only slightly overclocked which even if you overclock the 1600X and the 2400G in the end you will still have the same performance
i almost wish they would make a higher end APU. id still use a dGPU but its always nice to have a backup while you wait on an RMA lol
4000 series could be Navi iGPU's which could be the same performance at the RX 570
by the time that hits the market rx570 performance will be on the low end like the vega8/11/whatever else they have currently =\
makes me wonder what AMD's version of ferveros will look like. no idea why that just happened to be a thought lol
Oh ok ty
Well just the APU's alone are usually marketed towards esport gamers or casual gamers because i remember the older APU's that has Radeon HD graphics and was able to play games like Left 4 Dead 2 with CS 1.6 without any issues
yeah i remember my first APU build. used a 7850k and played skyrim just fine then i got the bright idea to do that really weird xfire thing between apu and dgpu so i bought a r5 250 to go with my r5 250 igpu lmao. it actually worked better than i thought it would
You mean dual graphics
The only reason why AMD wouldn't do that anymore is cause they would lose money
imagine a 2400G paired with a 4gb RX 560 and you have that in DGPU mode you could have something better than the RX 570
well you would effectively make the 560 a 2GB card since the APU can only reserve 2GB RAM for video
for DGPU mode the iGPU is just a piggy back for the main GPU really
which was the the reason why i used a 250 instead of something alot better. it was the closest thing to matching specs across both ends
so the Vram wouldn't really matter
but ewither way i tried it out. worked better than i thought it would but still sucked in the end compared to just getting a better gpu lol
imagine this ok the 2400G is pretty much the same performance as the 1600 and the X model is only slightly overclocked which even if you overclock the 1600X and the 2400G in the end you will still have the same performance <- because originally, the products used the same CPU core. (zen)
"Well just the APU's alone are usually marketed towards esport gamers or casual gamers because i remember the older APU's that has Radeon HD graphics and was able to play games like Left 4 Dead 2 with CS 1.6 without any issues" <- aside from you know, the consoles
and considering the original question that was asked about IPC
and that the models that was asked about was the 1600x and the 2600
i find it interesting that a comparison like that is "okay"
i had a 2200g and it performed pretty reasonably
but i definitely like my 2700 now better
it's leagues ahead for basic performance even
@dusk oracle it's unlikely for the Navi iGPU to be 570. More like between 560 and 570. Which is a major gap as the 570 is 2x a 560
the main question will be: chiplet or not chiplet for the units used in the next gen consoles.
because it makes little sense to have both "type" running at the same time
@long geyser thank you for the note last night :)
Chiplet would make more sense for yields tho. Which is nice when console is already decently cheap. And np
aye, it would make sense, the question is IF they have gotten the interconnect to play as nicely as they want
I mean the new Mac Pro has that dual GPU with IF as the interconnect
But IF should still be similar should it not?
but yes, it can be used for it
yes, in theory
i am quite looking forward to the whitepapers on the SoC's for the nextgen consoles
those are going to be juicy
True enough. Would be nice to know whether they are chiplets cuz if so we can have good hope for the future of IF
IF is not going anywhere
the question is what kind of traction that intel can gather on their side with the interconnect stuff they are doing
because their R&D department is not to be underestimated
It really is nice that the R&D is actually happening again
I do wonder were we'd be at rn if AMD was able to keep up
not much further
remember, we needed a shift in programming for multicore engines (talking the game side of things now)
and that took a LONG time
Well that push only really seemed to happen during Zen
nah, that is just the result of it
the shift imo really started with the amd socs in the consoles
because the devs didnt have a choice at that point
Yeah. I guess
Wondering which is better (RAM); I currently have Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB of DDR4 at 3000MHz. My friend gave me his older, used G Skill Trident Z 24GB of DDR4 at 2800MHz. Im not sure if the 24GB would be better because it is more RAM, but is at a lower speed? and its been used for about 5 years i believe
Do you use more than 16gb of ram?
Have you ever had any issues because of ram being 100%?
If not, then 3000mhz is better than 2800mhz, more ram doesnt mean more speed. Im assuming the CAS latencies are the same here though.
Anyone rocking the gigabyte x570 I Aorus pro wifi can tell me if it's a good buy? And is the chipset fan as loud as people claim?
Well why x570 anyways? Going to actual use Gen4 or 3950x?
New platforms are first in line for updates.
If you can survive the launch headaches
going to be interesting to see what exactly will be on the 550 chipset boards when they come out
@long geyser got a sweet deal on 3600mhz memory and the pro wifi isn't that more expensive than x470 boards where I live
B450 doesn't support 3600mhz
So it's between the pro wifi and x470 boards
Would rather go for the pro wifi
I just want to know if it's a good board
B450 does support 3600 ram
U just have to look at MAX versions
Or other naming equivalents
Aka the ones that are ryzen 3000 ready out of the box
@naive pendant @meager scarab the IMC (integrated memory controller) is located on the CPU, not the mobo. So that means most mobos support 3600 ram for Zen2 CPUs
True
Look at the QVL list for most of the older mobos around. Lot of them have 3600 rated mem on Zen2
Link the ryzen memory community spreadsheet
@covert turtle best mobo for a 8350? trying to upgrade an old rig but idk which to get, too many models on ebay 👀
Crosshair v 990fx
out of curiosity, what do those go for @mild jackal ? (edit:spelling)
I bet silly high haha
ah, thought you had looked :)
It's just a famous board
whatever board you currently have
probably fine
getting specific parts for a FX based system isnt worth the time, money, or effort
ppl still building fx systems? 😮
some people still think they're still good
But if i had like 100 to 120 to spend on a CPU i would rather go for a 2200G/3200G then a FX 8320/8350
Only reason to get a board like the one I named is for fun - benching/OC/ w/e - AM4 platform is a no-brainer upgrade over 990fx for real work.
What’s the best cpu mother board combo
3950x + that $1000 Asrock x570 motherboard
That would be the most expensive doesn't mean it is the best
Expensive usually does mean “the best”. 3950 x > -all processors out now
But it does depend on what you’re using it for
True
ya
in recent results i have seen the 9900K do better than the 3950X in gaming
uh idrk about the the extreme series processors much
All I know is that new it was like 2000
If you're doing things like rendering then the 3950X would be better
in multithread yeah
not defending intel
but in single core their victory is still there
marginal
and for gaming they get a few more frames
at a much worse cost
Well right now you can buy this https://www.newegg.com/intel-core-i9-10th-gen-core-i9-10900x/p/N82E16819118111
ya ik
Which from this result shows the 3950X only 2% better https://i.gyazo.com/899a08f30346cec8d82be33de875fe34.png
Newegg is selling it for that much so
open box which is slightly cheaper is selling for this much for the 3950X https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16819113572R
This is why i tend to think that 10th will come out on top again
For some reason in the UK the 3950x has gone down from 750 to 720, and is in stock in places now.
@quaint current depending on location
I got mine at Best Buy
amazon is still there
yeah thats mc not amazon
Sold out in Tustin too
I don't understand, the 3950x link links me directly to Amazon.com (US) product with the US price, but any time I try to get to the 1600 AF product page, it redirects me to the UK or gives me a GBP price instead.
well you linked Microcenter
He also linked Amazon.
This is in stock 🙂 https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-Threadripper-3970X-64-Thread/dp/B0815JJQQ8
I kind of want to see future dual socket AM4 boards
But anyways 50$ more for 2% performance i would of expected it to be a little cheaper then or the same price as the 10th gen i9
why?
2% better is still better
Lot of dual socket SP3 boards for Rome/Naples
Nitpicking is a thing
but @quaint current you are destroying the narrative! think of the children!
:v
Sort it out by price low to high for both
I'd grab an x299 dark new for $315 , easy choice
Wait what are we comparing here, 3950x vs 10980xe?
@elfin warren you certain you are not in cahoots with @quaint current ?
We're comparing a 10 core to a 16? Okay Im straight up done.
And benchmarks.
because of price.
🤔 so you could have a 10 core chip on hedt or a 16 core chip on mainstream for the same price
Kinda silly comparison unless the use case is a user wanting a gaming capable HEDT work rig or something
In which case, need to look at game benches
I'm on the 3950X's side here. Just comparing benchmarks for two different use cases is not a good thing to judge performance by.
The above assumes equal price
10980xe is a more fair comparison
not on price.
When comparing performance for price, its easier to pick processors performing at least in the same ballpark as well as similar use cases to then compare the prices of for that performance
so you can have the same performance nearly for like 3-400 cheaper
intel doesn't really do good in either
Yeah its hard to really find similar processors of the same price + performance when one is inherently better value than the other.
yea
Do I buy (both 2x8 kits at 3600mhz) Patriot viper steel CL17 for £67, or buy corsair vengeance lpx CL18 for £76?
More concerned about ryzen 3000 compatibility on an x570 and brand quality/reliance on specs.
I live in the UK. £ doesn't mean dollars.
The cheapest 3600 CL16 ram in the UK right now is £160. I am not joking, 90% of gskill models no longer exist.
And if you get DOA from newegg your plan is what?
You can return US amazon products to a UK amazon distribution center?
Which Im fairly sure would be 20+
Some of us don't live at home.
I left home at 15.
Scotland Ftw.
Anyone gonna chip in on patriot viper steel vs viper 4 blackout? Apparently the blackout is specifically ryzen 3000 optimised but I can't find anything to suggest that's not just marketing mumbo. Same latencies, both 3600.
No, that was corsair Lpx.
You aren't going to notice the difference in day to day to use or in games
The CL17 is actually cheaper than CL18. I figured it would run at CL18. I figured in theory I could overclock it by that one tad.
The Ryzen Optimized stuff is marketing mumbo
Not like Id personally want to.
With the cheapest 3600 CL16 being £160, downgrading to 3600 cl17/18 costing £67-77 doesn't hurt me as much as I thought it would.
There were sub £100 kits before christmas but at that time they all got taken out of the game.
I REALLY wish I ordered then but put aside for the 2080S instead.
Im not sure if that was a good move or not, with the GDDR6 scare possibly leading to some increased prices early.
1080p144.
So is the 3900x.......
3950x, not 3900x.
Many AAA titles actually seem to get about the 120-150fps mark on max settings at 1080p, so the 2080S fit perfectly. The 3950X fits my actual use for the machine rather than occasionally picking up a good game.
Ram I'm just getting 16gb to economise on starting costs, but to be fair I can afford 32gb if Im going for ram at this price.
I will be for the next 5+ years probably, yes. As long as Im still a civil engineer.
I'll always be in my heart at least.
I'm into future proofing, but not getting a 3950x to watch youtube level of futureproofing.
I did go for an x570 though.
I might as well get 32gb at this price, while site surveying programs involve more rendering than ram requirements whilst running, I still want to open more htan 3 chrome tabs.
where can i get an i7 9700k for cheap
by getting a 3600 or 3700x tbh. Intel is overpriced and has no real reason to be bought. Push the extra money towards other components like the GPU. If you have literally no other choice then eBay
@long geyser I completely forgot about Ryzen's memory controller. I guess I'll go for the asus B450-I
Actually the auros b450i is cheaper
the aorus boards are really good but have spotty BIOS
my aorus board doesn't even have PBO
this actually is a thing with gigabutt
they have weird or insufficient BIOS a lot
i've encountered this with their boards before
and yet i still bought one
I have a b450 and so far it has been treating me right
Giggabyte has pbo, you just have a really bad board not to have pbo @misty belfry
Watching the new AMD cpus try to do monolithic
oh look /g/ is here
im upgrading my processor from an R5 2600 to a R9 3900x, should i also upgrade my b450 tomahawk for an x570 or you guys think it should suffice
Itll suffice if you dont plan on overclocking at all. Id still get an x570 just for the PCI 4.0. Which wont just be useful for "possible" Pci 4 GPUs but also just PCi 4 m.2s
And when it starts to get towards the end of its usefulness down the line, you have the VRM cooling to OC it no problem
any x570 boards you guys recommend? lol
Credit to:@VegetableStu @GoldenLag @LukeSavenije The following list is based on facts, ranked on power delivery and known problems. The list will include boards that support CPU overclocking available at retail from different brands. Currently only AMD boards are done because...
Personally, the Asus x570 TUF Plus (wifi) was good value for me to buy at the time, a lot of people rate it quite well.
GN rated it the best sub $300 mob you could get
When you overclock and set a fixed voltage. Does the power consumption of the CPU increase web it's idling in comparison to 'auto' voltage set by the motherboard
Yes but when it's idling it doesn't heat up any more than it used to when it wasn't overclocked
Might be like 20W idle vs 5-10, hard to say
Depends on how much the voltage was raised
I have it set to 3.8ghz @ 1.35v
And it doesn't drop from that voltage
Varies on both windows power settings - there's about 100 of them - AGESA, BIOS, bios settings etc
So it's not something to worry about in the end is it?
The performance increase is huge in my case when I OC
Nah
sounds like you have a zen+ 8 core or something, that's on the danger side - but fine unless you want to run that for longer than it's worth as a coaster
To clarify - did you set a manual, fixed 1.35?
It's a 1700
If I try to oc to 3.9+
It requires 1.38v just to boot and the performance isn't that much better than 3.8ghz
1.35v is as low as it'll go stable
Sounds as I'd expect, that's a common "voltage wall" on the v/f curve for zen+. diminishing gains
Good to know 👍
I just check https://siliconlottery.com/pages/statistics
Woah
That's a good page
Anyone plz help me with xmp and cpu clocks on my mobo it’s so weird haven’t found any guides on it
Video call me or dm me as soon as possible
In ram qvl HX424C15FB/8 is listed, will HX424C15FB3A/8 work?
@barren lichen XMP is for overclocking ram. If you buy for example 3600mhz ram, it might actually run at a lower clock speed, and youll need to set an XMP profile. There should be one with your ram, in that case, that might be called XMP-3600. Thatll get it to run at the advertised speed. Its a bit more complicated but ram XMP settings are what you're looking for on that.
Messing with XMP and CPU baseclock/clock multipliers is in the #overclocking territory
@restive wedge can I send a screenshot
If you want.
hello, i have a problem my pc wont register another 8 gb of ram, heres the orginial (https://www.teamgroupinc.com/en/product/vulcan-ddr4) and heres the one that wont register (https://www.teamgroupinc.com/en/product/elite-u-dimm-ddr4) and i have Prime B360M-A as a motherboard. Thanks if you can help.
One of those runs at 1.2V, the other at 1.2 or 1.35V. Which do you have specifically?
i have both, this is the one that registers https://www.teamgroupinc.com/en/product/vulcan-ddr4
yeah at 1.2
And by not registers, do you mean doesn't show in the BIOS or?
yeah
Both installed at the same time?
no
Same timings? and speeds?
idk about that
So you install the ELILTE and what happens, no boot?
it boots, but when i added the 2nd one, it doesnt show up on the bios
I need to know more. What size RAM sticks are they, speeds, model number, something? 2x4GB sticks? DOes each stick work by itself and just not together at the same time?
can i dm you my CPU-Z validation?
K
Really want to see what AMD has next for this stream
@gritty meadow Oh 😛 read it wrong. I thought they were gonna do another stream
Does it matter witch slots I choose to put my two sticks? Between A2 and B2 or A1 and B1
generally, a1 first
and in theory, it should not matter, but there are boards that complain if you use only b1 (from the a1 + b1 pairing)
Ok thx
What MB would you recommend for a 2080S and 3800x system
I'm currently looking at getting the Asus tuf gaming plus, but I'm concerned it might not be enough
scuse me
Wait wat
TUF Gaming X570 WiFi is the best rated sub $300 board. WDYM one caught fire?
one caught fire
hahaha
and that was just with a 3600
maybe just a faulty board
Uh Zack
read it
Heatsink screw applied at the factory incorrectly shorted out a component
Right througha bunch of tracks
ah
all i remember is hearing that one caught fire
and nothing more
so thats all i think of when i hear Asus TUF x570
my bad
carry on
Yeah, overtightened screw at the factory
Still, good thing to check on any motherboard that you buy
call in a techie lol
My friends were talking about timings and that's when they lost me
t i m i n g ?
yes
I have a friend who has different ram brands
it works
as long as it's same speed
They will just run at the lower speed if different speeds
ye
That shows up in my iCUE software and one of my ram stick's rgb isn't in sync with what I put in the app, anyone knows what that means ?
I completely shut the app down and restarted it and it fixed itself
am so confused
Technically you can but make sure the speed, timings and Voltage all match
Trident.Z or Vengeance RGB pro?
either or.
I want to get the neo ones for the lower cas, but the black and other color doesn't quite fit
i got some DDR4-2400 CL17 same voltage though i forget the voltage, but different brands
i paired them up and overclocked to 3200 and kept the same timings, memtest86+ says all is good
so you can do that if you want
you just have to match stuff up
also got the infinity fabric with this super cheap RAM so i'm happy about it until i get 32GB which I want to eventually... it's just even less of a priority now with this nice overclock
So I just got a 3950X. I’m currently running on the Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200 MHz kit. Should I consider grabbing the G.Skill Trident Z Neo 3600 MHz kit with 16 CAS latency to get the most out of the chip?
it depends
hang on
System Memory
System Memory Specification
3200MHz
according to AMD's page
i'll link
AMD recommends 3200 so what that means is you need 3200 to not bottleneck the infinity fabric interconnects
so you're good
Mm, I know, I’ve read that too, but other things I’ve also read online say that 3600 MHz is a good sweet spot, and it runs a ratio with the infinity fabric of 1:1
yeah, i'm just going with AMD
if you want to get 3600, you will get a little more performance out of your system
but it is likely that is because the RAM is faster
Is the performance boost worth getting the RAM for? It would probably be a side grade if anything, but the extra boost is probably pretty nice
i can't quantify it because i can't afford that CPU 😂
so i am not sure what kind of boost you'll get
i have an R7 2700 and it's bloody fast
i'm running 3200 on it (got lucky and overclocked mismatched 2400 sticks and they work perfectly/respond well to memtest)
Fair enough. I’m coming from a 2700X myself but I’m basically futureproofing myself with the 3950X
to me, a 3950X is a level of speed i can't understand because i haven't felt it
it seems like in normal tasks it would feel about the same but you'd have a lot of fun with video encoding and things like that
and watching that just buzz by
Well, I run DaVinci Resolve on this system and it for sure makes post production a lot smoother. On games it seems pretty nice too, but I’m on a Witcher binge right now so I haven’t tested anything crazy on it like Borderlands 3
imo the most important component for a PC's "feeling of speed" is an SSD
you can have an old FX or Haswell processor and a really fast SSD
and the computer will feel very fast
responsiveness
that's the word i'm looking for
english is my first language and i can't even
Well I just ordered one of those snazzy Corsair pci-e 4.0 nvmes so it’ll probably be much faster when I get it on Friday
yeah you will notice that 5000Mbit/sec
or whatever
the sabrent ones are around 5000
I’m already running on a 970 evo and that already seemed like pinnacle of speed
haha
Didn’t think it could get any faster
not even close
nothing is ever the pinnacle of speed
it just keeps getting replaced
i use an old SATA M.2 as my boot and "whatever games i am playing most" drive
and it feels very fast to me
i'd imagine mostly because the swap file is on the SSD
I’ll probably clone my OS onto the new NVME and see how fast it goes
It’s shame that Samsung’s cloning software doesn’t work going the other way
bootfix is in the toolbox of command line programs on the windows install disk
yeah
bootfix is just insurance
in case the boot parameters aren't the same
for NVMe
because i dunno how it detects the 3.0 vs 4.0
Is it maybe just easier to like reinstall Windows?
or different drives
it was easier for me
i wish i could run PCIe 4.0
i'll probably buy a 3900X when they hit $300 after zen3 comes in
and then i'll replace my board with something that has PCIe 4.0
I’m pretty glad I got this processor. I won’t have to bide my time for zen3 and can just wait for a good 4 or so years now
16/32 is a beast number so I doubt I would need to upgrade for some tome
Time
Yup
it's never really reliable
The next time I would upgrade is if something crazy happens, like they do a 5nm processor with 32/64 in the mainstream line
Reason: Bad word usage
Now that would be something
@glad turret no swearing
Lol got warned for cursing XD sorry
My sailor’s mouth is the real deal, hard to stop
if i got warned once more i'd get kicked 😂
Haha
i've gone a month without anything so you can do it too probably
I’ll try. I curse regularly at work because of the lax atmosphere
Haha, netiquette is real
the bot is so fast nobody can see what you said thankfully
their reason for that rule is we have like 12 year old regulars
not like i wasn't cursing like a sailor at that age already but it's more of a "we don't want to get the parents upset and have them retaliate against newegg"
Crazy. Didn’t think 12 year olds could afford computers. Mommy and daddy’s money I guess
Had to work for my stuff
when i was 12 i had (old) computers
tons of old computers because they were cheaper than dirt
Mm, true
we were poor, it was a hobby i could afford
in a way i lived vicariously through the 80s for most of my older childhood and teen years
80s was only my first 7 years or so, we had C64s at school when i was like 6, and those were still fairly new by 80s standards
because something from 1982 was perfectly fine in 1989 according to most people
apparently
I didn’t even have a computer in the 80s
later they actually started funding the schools and we had internet access on the macs
Didn’t touch a computer until like the early 90s in elementary
i didn't until 1988
