Sucks I know but a fault is a fault
If you're lucky it's easily replaceable
Some cases have easily replaced cable header mounts
Except that the USB 3.0 header is plugged in already.
And I've learned that those do not like coming out.
Last time I did it, the blue plastic came off the cable and stuck in the motherboard.
(sigh).
I will probably break out the other case to test with later. For now I need some dinner.
average usb 3.0 internal header experience
(tbf it's not actually that common, but it also happens often enough for me to believe it's not user error)
(or at least not completely due to user error)

Alright, I'll work on the USB-C port later.
I just adjusted the memory expo profile in BIOS to change the mem speed from 5200 mt/s to the rated 6400 mt/s.
Now it takes a really long time to boot into the grub menu. Any idea what's causing that and if it will go away?
It should go away
If it doesn't try a newer bios, if not it could have stability issues
No guarantee of this
But my experience tells me such
How many boot cycles should it take to get back to its snappy boot time?
I'm running benchmarks now to test stability
Probably 3 or so?
Does it retrain memory when you switch profiles or something?
Often a bios update resolves it
I didn't realize it would do that over multiple cycles. I thought it was just a one time thing when first booting up or after a CMOS reset
Every time it has a new profile basically
But it will only do it maybe a couple times after setting it as preferred
I'd prefer to avoid a bios update if possible because I don't have a UPS and I'm a little paranoid about something going wrong and bricking the board.
And then MCR should remember the numbers
Chimera Mk. 3.0 - AMD Ryzen 7 7700, Radeon RX 7900 XT, Phanteks Enthoo Pro ATX Full Tower
This is the build
It's highly recommended for am5
Ah
It's a pretty new board I think
Ok this build is not too bad
So I'm not sure a BIOS update is available let alone necessary
But if it hasn't gone away after a couple boots
Take out the two sticks in A1 B1
It should get better
4 sticks of ddr5 can really complicate things
Even if it's 8gb each
Just 2x24?
Yep. 48GB total
Ah then yeah I retract that
I would consider a bios update if it doesn't go away
It can make a world of a difference
If it messes up the update you can warranty it tbh
Other users mentioned that quad channel (or whatever is the correct terminology with AM5) would kill mem speed unless I hit the lottery and manually tuned it
A failed bios update to the point of board death is rare in this day and age
You had good advice
Do they usually have a back up BIOS that can't be flashed over in case your flash is unsuccessful?
This board does have a button on the back.
Not sure what it's for.
This is in fact a thing on some boards
And yes that button is just for that sort of thing
It's a bios update button
If you want to not do it via bios
Annoying to get to work but very very helpful to save a board
Alright, I ran two Unigine benchmarks, and both looked pretty good. I did Superposition first at native resolution with the admittedly scant graphical settings maxed out.
The second was Heaven with everything maxed out.
The latter, being older had higher overall FPS.
Can I safely assume memory is stable if it's successfully completed stuff like this?
I suppose that's a fair assumption
Any alternatives?
What's occt?
A stability test suite
How much is it?
Why is it always a subscription now?
I remember when you bought MS Word and you just had MS Word.
I mean, tm5 is there above if you don't wanna pay lol
I still have an ms word license
99 years
💀
I know what you mean
Trying to think of any others
I mean memtestpro is good but not from an official link if you want to avoid paying
Karhu isn't a full suite
Benchmate only does benching iirc
Not bad but not very good coverage
Mt86 is horrible
Windows built in tester is as bad
Yeah I think that's just about all the options
Occt would be your best bet if you're not keen on testmem5
Currently BIOS time is about ~70 seconds up from ~12. Running a few more cycles to see if it clears up.
I'm going to be annoyed if it persists.
Yep
Also I started getting this on shut down even before the mem profile tweak and I don’t know what it’s about
Whoa
Open command prompt as administrator
Type
sfc /scannow
No errors good, errors bad
Errors unstable as heck
Ok interesting
Looks good.
Test will reveal if unstable
A bios update I would recommend honestly yeah
Test before or after?
Update first, test after.
Alright. That'll be a project for future me. It's nearly 11:00 PM for me.
Thanks for your help. I'll follow up as necessary.
It's ok
Take your time with it man
PC's are hard
There's no rush to finish everything
Just learn as you go
Falling down is honestly part of the process
Lol
I thought I was pretty decently knowledgeable given my previous builds, but between this new AM5 build and learning Linux to dual boot, I've been learning a lot over the past couple months.
Much of which is thanks to other users in this discord. You guys make this one of the best tech information resources I've ever used.
I've been at this for years and I learn at least one new thing a day 😂
Glad I'm not alone.
I'm going to go to sleep now. Will follow up if and as necessary. Have a good one.
Yo chat
I have this asus vivobook with 4+4 ram one soldered one removable,i got a ram from marketplace and changed it to 4+8 but my laptop became unstable, any fix?
Does it get better if you put the ram 4 ram stick back
If it does then the ram stick you got to put in it is the issue
And laptops should just work if you add ram
Unless the stock speed IS the issue
Yeah works better
So either the stick you got is unstable or the laptop doesn't like the stick at all
Either way there's not really a proper fix for that since laptops use something called JEDEC
Which is basically stock speed and set to "just work"
So it not doing that implies the issue is the stick and you need to use something else/warranty the stick
So if i get the exact same model but in 8gb would that work fine?
The ram or the laptop
You could try a different ram stick
The idea is you should run the same type of ram and not mix
In laptops this isn't super necessary but it still plays a role
So likely what's happening is the laptop just don't like the 8gb stick you tried
For reason it's broken or just not liking it
i.e bad mix
Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_PhysicalMemory | Select-Object Manufacturer, PartNumber, Speed, Capacity
I used this code and it says ram speed 3200
But in task manager its 2400
How to check true speed?
The ram will default to one or the other speed
So if the task manager says 2400 it's 2400
It used to glitch but not that way from memory so that sounds correct
Yk i hate this laptop shi t show
Imma get my pc soon
😭🙏🏿
Let's not filter dodge lol
Should I just go for the latest available BIOS update for the MOBO?
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B650-GAMING-PLUS-WIFI/support
Alright, here goes nothing
Okay, we're updated.
Before
After
Looks like it reset ram speed too
I might do a CMOS clear to reset everything before trouble shooting more
Alright so my BIOS time before all this was about 12 seconds. Then with the mem speed change on the old BIOS it moved up to 70 seconds.
This last boot it was about 27 seconds.
At least I didn't get this error again when shutting down from Windows
Hopefully now booting is a bit better
I'm not going to be satified until I get back down to that 12 second boot time. At least at the 5200 speed.
Aaaand now it defaulted to booting to Windows instead of Grub.
(sigh)
One step forward, two steps back
Okay, so my machine is dual boot configured with Windows and Linux Mint on their own m.2 NVMe drives.
Before this last CMOS reset, I was happily booting into the Grub boot manager on start up which let me pick which OS to boot into.
Now it is defaulting to Windows. When I went into the BIOS boot menu by pressing F11 I selected the Linux device and it booted into the Grub manager as was normal before.
I think if I can set the Linux drive to be the default in the boot order that it will resolve that problem. Unfortunately, in BIOS when I go to look for my devices in the boot order, the only hard disk listed is the Windows one and I can't see any way to get it to switch to the Linux one.
Any ideas?
Wait...
Apparently the option to switch between the two disks was under UEFI Hard DIsk Drive BBS Priorities.
I don't know what BBS means, but let's see if this worked.
Hey man sorry
I'm quite busy today
You can choose default boot options in bios under the F7 (sometimes F2 or F6) advanced section
There's a whole menu called "boot"
You can choose grub as the first priority there, with fail safe to dual boot the other two OS startups
Reminds me of when I was messing around with ventoy, this is definitely the fix for it tho
No need to apologize my friend. Setting the linux disk as primary in the BBS priorities menu did the trick.
I just didn't realize it was nested under that particular line.
No clue what BBS means in this context.
Also the Windows boot time is now back to about 11 seconds, while Linux seems to be around 16.
Much better than 70, though I may see if I can shave Linux down some later.
Currently our mem clock is 5200 mt/s.
Not sure if I want to try 6400 tonight.
Does it seem to be booting faster?
MCR should be on even at jedec so if it is that's good news
Then I'll suggest the next step forward and you should be up to speed
For clarity, in my particular configuration it only showed the Windows and "ubuntu" disks. Yes, I know Mint is a Ubuntu derivative. I just think it's funny.
Grub wasn't listed, but selecting the Linux disk does boot me automatically into it because of my Grub settings that I edited a while back to set up the dual boot.
Windows is down to 11 seconds from a high of 70.
So it's quicker ye?
Very much so.
I didn't check Mint's boot times before the original change, but it was also hitting 70 seconds or so before and is now about 16.
If it's slow again
Go to the advanced section of bios
Set the "dram frequency" speed
Under your xmp/expo
From 6400 to 6000
You might think "Oh but then it's a lot slower"
But no
Some AMD chips can't do 6400
Synced anyway, and unsynced it's slow af
My CPU is a Ryzen 7 7700 for reference
Interestingly enough, in BIOS it shows base clock at 3.8 while the box advertises a base clock of 3.6.
So if it does seem a lot slower, set it to 6000 and it should be quicker
So could be a MOBO bottleneck?
It's an infinity fabric stability issue
CPU related
Imc bandwidth
Ah. Hardware limitation or software patchable?
These boards are good for up to 8000, some higher but it's a silicon limit for the ryzen
9000 has exactly the same behaviour
You can definitely go higher but it'll be desynced
So recap, try 6400, if slow again, go 6000, it should go back to being fast
6000 when stable is much much faster than 6400 not stable
Oh, and while I have not executed any more tests beyond the benchmarks from yesterday, I did play Space Marine 2 with a friend for a couple hours with basically the graphics settings maxed out and didn't have any issues. Only dipped below 60 FPS maybe once and the rest of the time was running between 80 and 90 or even 100+ in less chaotic scenes.
Nice
So despite the long boot time, it didn't seem to have an issue with the game
Yeah it should run pretty well
My point being that long boot time aside, performance once booted seemed great.
Afterwards do the sfc /scannow command in command prompt just to check it finds no issues
Alright, we'll try 6400 next via EXPO
Ye
Ye all good
I think after this, you should be set
You said that that it may take a few boot cycles to fully train the memory again after a profile change correct?
So wait a few cycles to see?
Yes it can do
Try maybe 3 times
If not by then dial back to 6000
Alright, here it goes.
For your reference, here’s our starting config. Please note that apparently one of the EXPO profiles is a 6000 one
Don't choose that 2nd one
Good of them to have it but it's quite slow
Well, in expo terms
Better to set the speed manually with the same timings as profile one?
We will just override the frequency if we need to yes
Okay, first BIOS time in Windows this time was 35.2 seconds.
We'll give it a few cycles and see if it goes down, but it not being 70 is already encouraging to me.
Such is the amd way
Some bios versions are just ass with certain chips
Lmao
But then others are solid
I still like the price to performance ratio team red offers. For now, I'm willing to put up with it.
Now that you're up to date, I would only update if necessary for a major security issue
BIOS wise?
AGESA?
So stick with what works well unless you HAVE to
Yeah agesa
It's the code platform they use for AM4/AM5
I think even AM3?
It retires in a couple years iirc
AMD is moving to open source
Uh... does that mean AM5 is only going to be supported for a couple more years or will they offer a new software update?
"Retires" they'll still update existing stuff
I can get behind that
We were promised up to 2027 with new hardware
So there's an implied new gen on AM5 coming
Okay, second boot shows 11.6 second BIOS time in Windows task manager and the performance tab does show 6400 MT/s
Will double check BIOS to be sure and run a few more cycles than see how it looks on the Mint side.
But I think we're just about done with this particular project segment
Damn. Windows 11 commits over 8GB for itself.
No wonder it runs like dirt on "minimum" specs.
And that explorer app fault still isn't coming back.
Will run the scan on the next boot
Just "sfc /scannow" right?
Ye
I'm playing "Children of the Omnissiah" on a loop. I usually do when I'm working on computers.
Don't know if it helps, but it makes me feel cooler.
Lol
It's a great quick check for memory corruption
So by running it every couple times I was testing for running into ram problems, the crashed explorer looked sus but there's no immediate reveal of problem
So for now it seems ok
However if you note crashing or major issues come back and ask cos those stability tests will be a good check
Like occt?
I'll probably run your recommended mem tests at a later date.
Those kinds of tests, if you get even 1 error, it's basically a serious fault
Just not tonight.
That's ok
It's booting quick
That's already a sign it's stable
So not too worried
Good luck with the pc man
Glad to have helped
I'm grateful for everything you've shared.
Alright. Linux seems to still be about 16 seconds and change (checked via "systemd-analyze" in terminal) . I don't know what it was like before this entire episode.
Windows is now consistently around 11 seconds which is even better than before.
I haven't stopwatch timed either, but for now it feels very fast and snappy and with Linux I might be able to tune down the time to shave off about 5 seconds. We'll see.
Sounds perfectly resolved now
Some bios versions might be a little snappier, but then something else about it like less memory stability, cpu stability, maybe a strange setting
Thanks again. I'm sure we'll speak again at some point.
I'll try to do some testing on that USB-C header, but to be honest with you I might just leave it regardless of whether it's the case or the MOBO that's at fault. I don't use USB-C for very much and the one on the back works perfectly.
All good
I mean there's a fairly easy test
Just plug that header into the other board
Plug into the psu
Flip it on, does it charge?
If yes the cable works
If no the cable is dead
Tells you if it's the header or not
I don't have another board, I have a case. I was thinking I'd just plug the header from the other case into my current rig's board and see if it recognized anything when plugged in.
This is the opposite way and yes
I actually checked my last build's board and it doesn't appear to have USB-C, just 3.0 type A
That will def work
Yeah usb c is premium lol
Even though boards at $150 have it now
Not that I used 3.0 on the case I/O before since my last case simply didn't have any
Go back a couple years it was on like $300 ones
Mmm
Anyway yeah that won't be too hard to check
I am still a little attached to Type-A for nostalgia and simply because so much of my stuff uses it, but USB-C is an admittedly awesome standard.
Good if it works with the other case, means the board header is intact
Usb 4 I think is the first time it's great
Since usb c and thunderbolt is standard
I'm probably well outside Newegg's return period by this point so I may need to take it up with Phanteks directly. We'll see.
Also gan charging
The PD spec and TB in usb C is a godsend
Anyway gotta get going. Happy to have helped
Let us know if you have more questions

It appears that I was mistaken, and this case does not in fact have USB-C.
I'll need to look into sourcing an adapter to test things, though that approach will probably only confirm or eliminate the board as an issue without confirming or denying anything about the case. At least based on what adapters I've seen available.
For now I'll just close everything up. Since I don't use USB-C much and the rear I/O port functions perfectly, it is a flaw I can live with even if irritating given the amount of money and time I've sunk into this.
What’s motherboards would you guys recommend for the 9800
B650 eagle ax
Hey Can i get some help with cases pls?
I am trying to measure the back of cases and need to see if that info is industry standard or it differs case to case specifically the pcie brackets on the back
as long as they are following ATX spec, they're all the same
though there are 2 types of pcie slots
normal, and low profile
I started getting this fault again today.
Running sfc in the Windows command line shows no integrity violations. I haven’t had any system crashes either.
This particular error occurs on shutdown and only stays on screen for a few seconds before continuing the shut down as normal
seems suspicious, prob do dism and maybe chkdsk and an antivirus scan
Is the dism command "dism /scannow"?
It's dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Will running the terminal commands while the widows defender scan runs mess with anything?
Looks like everything came back clean
Still got this on shut down. Everything seems to be functioning normally otherwise though.
I'm concerned, but I also don't know what to do or if I should even worry
is the x870e am5 atx the best mobo for am5 right now? like absolute highest end?
Are you going to use USB 4 at all?
@golden pike pinging just in case this gets buried
no
i dont think so
whats that
is it way more powerful than 3
regardless ill prob just stick with using C for fast
i wouldn't worry about it unless you have a use case.
Also a X870E board is useless in most cases unless you have a use for the extra PCIe lanes and such.
What CPU are you looking at getting or have?
bro im so sorry
im here
9950x3d
will be my cpu when that comes out
and i will need new mobo and ram
Are you gonna be playing games only?
You plan to use this for Video or Music production I assume on top of gaming?
yes
I took a peek at your bio. Hope you didn't mind.
some turbo genius in this chat that i trust said the new 3d ones are better designed and will be only better, and no longer a trade off from the non 3d counterparts
just might need a slight overclock
ofc bro! all public info. i run a production company !
If you care, $450 7950x3d
Oh nvm
Its oos
There is a $350 7950x tho
https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16819113771T
The difference between the 7950x3D and upcoming 9950x3D are rather minor unless you are into overclocking.
The main difference being that the X3D side of the CPU on the 9950x3D can actually be cooled properly allowing for much better overclocking capabillities.
other than that it's all minor improvements.
Also - i ask you about the mobo, bc im out of the loop, and will need a new am5 mobo - and there doesnt seem to be and equivalent of my current one which is a very powerful mobo (crosshair viii extreme)
am4 ofc
And well
ive been trying to get an astral, and i just got this deal IRL today that i can buy some dude's bundle
Unless you plan to spend 2-3 weeks overclocking that chip properly, I suggest you just get the 7950x3D at $450.
It went oos
Could come back tho
Its the third time I've seen it pop up
came back twice since I checked
so I am sure it will be back soon enough
i specifically love this chrosshair bc of the dimm slot for m.2s
Please elaborate more.
Most I'd bother spending, and that's twice what I normally suggest lol
my current mobo has a dimm slot that holds 2 extra m.2s without sacrificing bandwidth
Performance wise outside of overclocking is not noticable between a B850 and X870E and even then it is minor
That should be the case with any mobo as far as nvmes not taking gpu bandwidth
Any of the X870E motherboards within $350 are more than capable of what you want and shouldn't have this problem.
Honestly get a Threadripper at that point lmao
Anyways,
Our combined suggestion @golden pike is purchase a 7950x3D for $450 when it's back in stock along with the X870E Nova board.
take it from someone who owns a 7950x3D and wants to get a 9950x3D. the only actual benefit to my knowledge is overclocking.
i took a peek at your bio. hope you mind.
ironically ive seen a lot of races and ethnicities in peoples bios, but the one ive never seen is white LMAO
are specs out?
Hmm I could update mine to this and it'd be true:
- Part White
- Part Black
- Part Yellow
ty
Hmmm
i am seeing
not enough slots for m.2
A few leeked benchmarks and such nothing on white paper from AMD yet. but what we do know is that the 9950x3D is just the 7950x3D with the updated thermal layout and minor improvements seen in Zen5.
add-in card.
ive just never seen
I like gaming
(random person) ❤️
white
a riser works
but also not tryna rob it from bandwidth
i could be that person
I'd be cautious with the 5090.
yes i heard it mightburn my house down
i already melted my 4090
and use it still
gg
..... good luck to you mate
nvidia moment
what happened to 1080 ti value man
Anyways most X870E boards should be enough. if you are that worried you should look into add in cards and a riser for it for nvme slots.
high end consumer cards costing 500 buckaroos
using the second pcieslot still takes bandwidth from gpu on these new boards right>
?
depends on the board.
that you will need to read up on.
yes oki oki
Most high end X870E boards it should not be a problem.
how many do you need??
I am curious, do you actually use all 5 slots?
4tb drives?
I suggest making the move to 4TB or 8TB ssds.
the x870e nova has 5-6 nvmes
yeah 5 m.2 2280 and 1 m.2 2230
the only motherboards with 6 m.2 2280 slots are non am5
@burnt spear I have the perfect suggestion for him ||not being serious|| MSI X870E G0DLIKE
i will admit it does look good tbh
but horribly priced
@burnt spear this gives me a headache... cost aside if you spend that much on a board get some freaking custom cables and MANAGE THEM
Ew
I wish Kingpin boards were still being made
those looked cool and actually had benefits for overclocking
@burnt spear are you aware of any manufacturs that make boards like those?
for AM5.
wondering because I am getting sick and tired of my MSI board.
While I found a bandaid my board still gets stuck in training if I leave my pc powered off for to long.
i have an a620i, lets swapsies fr fr
Wasn't there some overclocking record set on a midrange ASRock b650 hdv/m.2 board?
You want to spend 4-5 hours power cycling your pc to get it to boot on the chance that it doesn't get stuck in Training?
lets not swapsies fr fr
I have a feeling that's more related to you tweaking your cpu and memory so much
happens at stock
RMA?
I need my pc to work so that isn't a option
i wish i could do the bios swap to 650 like felix said i could do on this board lol, after i bought the board he basically did a "i know a guy who knows a guy" and the guy who could teach me how to do it just, has never gotten back to him or me lmfao
im rocking the asrock itx
It happened around the time I moved. I think it has to do with the new bios version if I had to guess.
Buy another mobo from Amazon, RMA Msi board, return amazon mobo when msi gets you a new one?
I plan to do a CPU upgrade at some point so if I did this, I'd RMA the board and keep the new one as my main
I want to reuse my 7950x3D as a server once I am settled somewhere.
@dull flint has that guy ever gotten back to you lmao
honestly a tempting option.
also after this experience I think going forward I will only be getting boards with error codes to simplify debugging in the future..
How many more generations is AM5 supposed to last?
up to amd to decide
though probably at least 3 (total), maybe more
3 more years from now?
am4 supported 4 generations of cpus
AMD releases a gneration a year right?
wondering because if I do decide to get another board I don't wanna spend a lot on it if it's only going to be used for 1 cpu.
wait, excavator(+) was also am4? technically 5 generations on am4 then
assuming that am5 (and this is a big "assuming" since amd's prior sockets didn't last as long as am4 either) lasts as long as am4 did, am5 may be used till 2028
gotcha.
Because the way I value how much I spend on a board goes smth like this
If I am only using it for 1 CPU then I max out at about $200
if I use it for 2-3 cpus then I max out at $350ish
am4 has lasted longer than the last 3 sockets amd has used combined
probably because their socket was inadequate for what they were doing?
FM1 - k10 (2011)
FM2 - piledriver (2012, 2013)
FM2+ - steamroller (2014, 2015)
FM2+ and AM4 - bulldozer (2015)
AM4 - bulldozer+, zen, zen+, zen 2, zen 3 (2016-2021)
N/A - zen 3+ (was BGA only, 2022)
AM5- zen 4 (2022, 2023), zen 5 (2024, present)
gotcha
ugh I am getting a headache from work.
I have been reading about different companies for 7 hours now.
lmao
damn rtings hasnt found a monitor with a 10/10 text clarity lmfao
How is the text clarity on OLED?
I still have a valid coupon for a QHD WOLED monitor.
$350 for it.
Self-lit OLED display for immersive visualsQHD 240Hz with ultra-high contrastWOLED wide gamut technology with DCI-P3 98.5 percentUltra-fast response time and QHD resolution Ultra-wide color gamut with DCI-P3 98.5 percentSelf-lit OLED pixels for deep blacks and vibrant colors6-axis color control for RBGCMY adju...
this one
oh it's oled
I thought it was WOLED.
oled's subpixel layout is generally worse for text clarity iirc?
also WOLED is still oled
forget what the w stands for though
white?
Any downsides to woled?
My current plan is to get some cash flow going again then purchase that monitor if there aren't any negatives about it since I can get it for $350 + $50 for shipping.
the apple studio display is somehow ranked number 1 in text clarity 🧐
those are like 180 PPI right?
wow
that is honestly the most clear text i've seen tested LMFAO
their ratings dont lie ong
218 PPI
Sounds like a nightmare for website designers.
lmao
speaking from experience on that one lmao
Honestly with how much reading I do, the idea of 4K at 27" is becoming very appealing.
Jsyk the cooler master oled is the worst oled
in terms of cheaper monitors that are more reasonably priced, this is the m27q (rev2)
Any QHD or UHD oleds within $500?
High PPI would be my preference for work. I read multiple paragraphs of text about 10 hours a day.
Probably the aoc qd oled atm
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/7LzXsY/aoc-agon-pro-ag276qzd2-267-2560-x-1440-240-hz-monitor-ag276qzd2
There was a $450 msi oled on woot but its oos
not tested yet
For $80 more theres a samsung 360hz oled
for the samsung
not bad but not great
some other site, seems like a similar story with the AOC
though both are qd oled so im not surprised
rtings probably would also rate this around a 7
Are there any oled panels with good text clarity that don't cost a kidney?
IPS (according to rtings testing at least) is usually the highest text clarity, with VA being in second place
if you had unlimited budget though
I guess I should also recognize at the end of the day that any oled monitor will probably have better text clarity then this FHD 24" monitor I got from Pixio a while back when I was on a very tight budget
it probably will be lol
those numbers hurt my soul to see
rtings rates their ratings of (i believe 5 and lower?) red to be a bad experience, yellow as ok/good and you wont be disappointed, and green as good-exceptional and you will expect a great experience with that feature specifically
green starts at 7.1
well my plan is to upgrade my GPU first then I guess I gotta start saving like a mad man afterwards for a good monitor
at some point I'd like to upgrade my ram to 2x48GB
I have hit the limit of 64GB a few times lately
man I have a sudden craving for french toast soaked in maple syrup now...
I was just reading about a food company and they had a image of what looked like french toast to me
lmao
why do I have freaking Beasty Boys and BBNO songs stuck in my head now.
What 1440p OLED has the best text clarity?
I'm guessing it's one of the WOLEDs
all just qd-oled panels
text clarity seems to mostly be caused by the resolution plus subpixel layout, with IPS being generally the most clear (the apple studio display is IPS with a really high res, which gives it the highest text clarity rtings has tested) and VA being a close second
and all the oleds with a higher rating than 7 are 4k
How is 1440p?
Would something like Discord be usable?
Or like YouTube
Tbf I'd mostly have Discord on my second monitor anyway so it doesn't matter all that much
orange is useable, green is good or excellent
red is unusable
Well that AOC has the same Samsung panel as pretty much all of them
So I think it should be good
ehhh
yeah i should but i alreadyt have these ones
really i just need to edit videos and delete th footage
been sittin for years
few films
haha
sorry i disappeared
So heres the thing i was speicfically looking for the highest end boards just cuz
The Nova board Bacca sent earlier is about as good as you can get. anything beyond that you are paying for brand name and bragging rights.
i pay for brand name
sadly
also
its bc im getting a deal on a bundle irl in about a few hours
from now
Okay, spend $1,099 for the MSI X870E G0DLIKE then.
Asrock is brand name...?
excellent way to gain "I got deep pockets" bragging rights lmao.
Their $110 b650m holds the world record oc for am5
What is in the bundle and how much?
honestly I have grown tired of Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte's board bs, I am considering trying Asrock next.
I don't even want to ask how much
Seriously?
You do you
I don't like ROG personally but a 5090 at MSRP isn't horrid.
It's like modern day Apple. Bad product, and all you pay for is the name.
I understand where ur coming from, but i like them and never had an issue with any product ive purchased over the last 10 years!
Theyre decent products at 1.5x-2x the price they should be
decent at best.
but yes they damn well better last for nearly twice the money.
anyways, @golden pike the RTX 5090 at msrp is pretty reasonable just comes down to your own pockets but I personally am not going to recommend blowing $500 on a ROG board.
whenever im asking for advice in servers price is never a factor
but i super appreciate the genuine advice
cuz ur right
I get that, it's performance in this case.
The Hero to my knowledge performs no better than any other X870E board for a outrageous increase in cost
the last time a brand board actually made a genuine difference to my knowledge were the Kingpin motherboards which unfortunately are no longer being made.
may they rest in peace those beautiful hunks of metal
MSI G0DLIKE.
Most overkill board on the market
I have a 5700G and 10700F just sitting around.
thoughts on what I can do with them?
I got a board and ram for them just no case, cooler, psu, or storage.
good point.
i will have basically entire extra build once i upgrade
I won't be reusing them as a server because they lack the processing power for game servers
will need exactly these haha
do you have a place u frequent
?
i have a place in poconos with my parents ill prob park a second build there
but i live in jersey
oh shoot wait i forgot this is newegg server and not my local microcenter discord
LOL
I work remote and live a nomadic life
basically got my main home and a small vacation cabin in the mountains of PA
yooooo thats dope
hoping to settle down here in Alaska as my main base of operations for the forseeable future
Yes.
Good scenery, honest kind and hard working people, lots of outdoor activities.
I have been through Canada, most major states in the US, and multiple parts of Mexico and I am from China originally.
woahhhh dude that is incredible
i love that
sounds like such an exciting and adventerous life
ive been trying to do similar
I have come to find that Alaska is amongst the few places where people on a general level keep certain amount of gratitude for what they have and are nice to each other
just explored the entire outer ring of iceland last october
Oh awesome.
always the people connected to nature!!!
always!!!
indeed
probably because they are less attached to what brain rot social media offers most people.
yes i think so
lol
less connected to tech in general
presented with intense beauty everyday
gotta be thankful for that
Looking to add another 16 GB to my system, I currently have is g.skill trident Z 3600MHz DDR4, and I want to add corsair vengeance LPX 3600MHz DDR4. Would I have any issues since they are different brands?
Yes
Id stay away from Corsair ram, known to have a lot of issues
And yeah best to match kits as closely as possible
You're much better off buying a 2x16 kit
And reselling the stick you have
Even if you bought the same brand, with the same speed and timings it could still be a different ram die
https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-32gb-ddr4-3600/p/N82E16820232920 gonna pick this up then
This is the same spec if you're fine with no rgb
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/6QTzK8/patriot-viper-steel-32-gb-2-x-16-gb-ddr4-3600-cl18-memory-pvs432g360c8k
Or could do 3600c16 for $60
So my friend has a 16gb 5600c46 jedec hynix A die stick
I set it to 6000c30
When they add a second stick, they'd obviously have to clear the current speed/timings. If they got a hynix die (6000c30) stick, there's a way to use the expo from that stick right?
Or would they have to manually set all of the timings and voltages again
i'll need someone else to confirm this, but you might not be able to be stable at 6000c30 if you add another stick which is rated for that, because it wouldnt likely be a matched kit
my experience (with ddr4) is that even with a stick that can handle like 4000c i forget, trying to add a much lower kit (3200c16) was not stable at that lower clock, and i had to run it even slower for it to be stable (though this depends on your luck)
I believe with ddr5 it's a little different. Mixing dies isn't good still, but 6000c30 is gauranteed to be hynix
(I should clarify that I mean that xmp may not be stable at 6000c30 without additional tuning)
That's more of a M die bin, did you look at the chips themselves?
You can try loading the xmp profile but no guarantee it works. At least 6000 is a good target for even bad bin Hynix.
Yeah it is
One sec I'll get the link
Hmm ok so they claim A die in the listing
Its possible it's M die but its also running essentially a silicon power 6000c30 expo with some minor improvements
Looking at the reviews it's quite likely that it's M die because of the review that shows them not being stable at 6800, failing the windows memory test of all things
Hm alright
Klevv claims to only use hynix dies at least
It could be bottom of the barrel A die maybe
If that was the case they would also need a garbage tier pcb like good old corsair ddr4
Even bad A die can do 7200
could it be bc it doesn't have a heat spreader?
eh either way
hopefully the result will be the same
chat my cpu is overheating and subsequently shutting down i changed the voltage and it helped a bit other than repasting (bought thermal paste arrives tmrw) what else could i possibly do?
i have a ryzen 5 5600x, i buypower aio cooler
shi like 4 years
naur
yeah that sounds like paste is dry then
or the aio pump could also be dead, is it loud?
nope
is it audible at all
touched the tubes doesnt feel like its clogged
just vibrating
shh
ok then it's safe to assume it's still running fine
i feeeeell it
i hope so
should the tubes be warm
4 years for paste to dry out is normal, so you're most likely going to be fine with just a repaste
they can be warm under load?
they weren’t warm whatsoever
but since they're made of plastic, which is a fairly good insulator, it might not feel quite as warm to the hand
i searched directions but to clairfy i just gotta remove the aio wipe the paste off the cpu and cooler and then reapply and stick that mf back on right
also it might just not be hot because of bad thermal contact between the cooler and the cpu (because of the aforementioned dry paste)
yeah
ah
just some paper towel should be good
okay bet ill fo that tmrw when it arrives
also be careful if it's a ryzen cpu
oh okay i thought u had to use a coffee filter or smthin
elaborate
since they use a PGA cpu, the thermal paste may stick it to the cooler, and when you remove it, the cpu may remain attached to the cooler
oh wait yeah you have a ryzen 5000 so it would be PGA indeed
so what precautions should i take
well, not really much you can do
to remove the cpu from the cooler, you have to twist it to get it off
also it doesn't happen 100% of the time, just sometimes
ah okay
but this is how pins get bent if you accidentally panic and drop the cpu or such
you might be able to prevent it from sticking on the cooler and coming off by pushing down on the cooler while twisting (though this also has some risk of shearing pins off, though this is a bit more rare from what i've seen at least)
ah
though some cooler attachment methods don't allow you to twist the cooler
i’ll probably ask for more help tmrw morning when i do the repasting
Run a cpu intense program like cinebench to heat up the paste
oh yeah warm cpu also helps
ah
my cpu was already running at like 95c
idle
Wow
That's probably not just a paste issue but worth a shot I suppose
what else could it be fr
was running fine till like 3 days ago
Yeah paste doesn't give out that suddenly
Dead pump maybe?
any way to check?
its not sounding out of normal
quiet as it always has been
Not sure other than noise
yeah none of that
But if it's fully dead it would be pretty quiet lol
It could potentially be the mount got messed somehow but idk how that would happen without a lot of physical movement
yeah that hasnt happened
do i need to unscrew the aio to repaste
or is just like a yank that mf off kinda thing
Likely yes. Could be clips maybe? But probably screws I think
ah okay
I put that in the wrong channel. whoops
Got a replacement motherboard. It won't post nor display.
Everything is connected all parts are fine.
Just a Green led on an ASUS tuf b550m-plus
I assume a debug led?
Which one is lit up
Boot led is lit up green
Also worth mentioning i have tried some fourm stuff of, removing gpu power cables, and removing cmos battery
Not sure what else could be done this point
So i bought a bad motherboard then?
Boot led usually means that it passed POST and just doesn't detect a boot media though I'm pretty sure
Maybe try a different output port or cable or monitor
@pliant siren
this looks interesting
What in the motherboard
That's actually a grandmotherboard
Then this must be a great grandmotherboard
thats a dinosaur homie
😭
That's a daughterboard so today it would be a great aunt board
Waiting for fatherboard
"It actually works like bees. Once the fatherboard has docked with the motherboard, the father-bits tear off and stay behind to keep the motherboard happily mothering. The fatherboard goes off and dies. This all happens in large manufacturing plants in China. Computers can't be manufactured outside of Asia because fatherboards are native to that region, and don't survive in more capitalist climates, which is also why most people never see any fatherboards.
Motherboards sometimes die early because the broken-off father bits weren't large enough to keep them going."
Thanks internet
Lmfao I love that lore dump
father bits is crazy ngl
Hi, So I know a lot of people have their own opinions on this but I am looking into getting a gaming pc at some point but not sure what cpu to go with. I've heard different things on AMD and Intel. What would you reccomend and why?
It depends on your usage.
I want to mainly run most AAA games. I want to roughly aim for mid tier
It'll depend heavily on the specifics of local pricing, right now 9800x3d is the best you can get for gaming, but for the mid end, there are currently a lot of good bundles for 7600x and co, especially at microcenter
But if you can get something like a 13600k for cheaper, that'd end up the better option, it's all about the price
Alright, I was leaning more towards AMD cpu's but was told to go with Intel but not entirely sure why they reccomened it to me
Nothing on anything
Okay, i got bios up again. But after setup it doesn't wanna boot.
I gotta change vga to be csm(compatibility support mode) on this asus motherboard. So how can i do that?
Got it! Got em!
I have switched from gigabyte to asus though ao the ui is a bit off for me
What do you guys think a I7-10700F and a R7-5700G is worth used?
How can i stabilize my ram on this asus motherboard?
I'd thought forcing the ram speed to the target was okay but it seems like it isnt. Enabling XMP profile on gigabyte was much simpler though
Or does csm effect it as well?
might have to adjust some timings manually
The ram is rated for 3600mhz but it doesn't do well. Goin to base default 2144hrz is stable. So i think im missing more things on this asus tuf bios
3900x
Its running off stock atm.
Dunno how else to do asus stuff. Feels like another planet compared to gigabyte
Usually when i say stuff, it gets jinxed... but maybe... maybe its coolio now?
You can try upping soc voltage to 1.05 or 1.1v if not
Although you might just be unlucky with the imc and it may be unable to do 1800mhz on the infinity fabric, you can try lowering the ram freq to like 3533 and see if that works
whats a good cheap am4 cpu and motherboard to pair with a 12gb rtx3060?
mostly modded minecraft and maybe some light blender
using parts i already have for it, 32gigs ddr4 ram and 750w psu
do you alr have the gpu?
if it's anywhere over $250 it's a hard pass, and even 225-250 is a bit much imo
and i'd take a 12600kfhttps://pcpartpicker.com/list/99rDYN
Part List - Intel Core i5-12600KF
yah
Ye, i jinxed it and now it doesn't post.
So what can i do to get back into bios and stabalize ram for preformance?
are there any good places to get used stuff? since what i already have is old parts from my pc
its either going to be a travel/fun pc that i might take to some boyscout troop events or ill be leasing it to a freind who doesn't have a desktop to use for blender and such
A 5600/5700 off aliexpress is good
You can definitely find cheaper on the used market tho
Part List - AMD Ryzen 7 5700
$69.30 after the $5 coupon
5700x is $95 w the coupon
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007798647609.html
As for mobo, that's a lil harder
VDDCR SOC voltage override?
ok
yea setting it to override and 1.05v
it has crashed on 1.05, tryin 1.1 before lowerin ram speed
Nope, crashed still. Lowered ram speed
No, its not wanting to hold up at all
And again, the RAM is fine for the 8th tests we've ran on it here.
What else am i missing?
are you only setting ram freq or are you setting the xmp profile?
ram won't do the xmp freq without the xmp voltage
i said setting up xpm, compared to gigabyte it's just 1 click, i don't know why asus is alot different for it
what exact ram are you trying to run rn?
can prob manually set the voltages to be safer

4x 8gb; 32gb total of ddr4 corsair dominator platinum rgb, at 3600mrz on a b550m tuf gaming plus
Asus does annoying stuff like *"Asus optimised XMP" which is stupid
They also call it docp
When no one else does
Can I get a quick recap on what the current situation is
Is it just the ram or have we still got psu/power issues
way back psu was having problems, then it was killed, then replacement psu killed motherboard which in turn killed the replacement psu, now i have bought a replacement motherboard in which its fine and running on a basic default level, though i can't get the full preformance of my ram without it being unstable and crashing after a good 5-10min of gameplay
Fascinating
Ok
Can you help me out here
Can you switch it off
Then take out all 4 sticks
Layout them out on a table
Stickers on the back showing
Send a picture
can you tell me what you're lookin for specifically and why corsair ram is such a bad thing then that we're doin this for the 9th time now?
Also I suspect there may have been some tangential death involved here between the og board and psu but we'll see
Because it's a highly common problem with corsair ddr4
Have you already done this?
Cos linking me to the pic if you have is easy enough
Corsair are infamous for failing even xmp out of the box on ddr4, and ddr5 they're not much better, locking pmics down unlike anyone else
Their 3200 bin is renowned for mixing and bad chips
Let alone 3600
i had bought a differnt psu from the list, we're on a 1200W thermaltake so i doubt it'd die already
With a 3900x I agree yes
Anyway if you a have a pic that would help a lot
Reason is they print version numbers
So I know where each ram chip comes from just by seeing that
Not posting with xmp has me immediately sus of ram
So yeah
server bias on ram has increased to 9 now, give me a second then
I mean if we work out the kit is all dandy as is by testing it we can very easily rule it out
But it's like, one of the most common troubleshooting I've given over the years
It just happens that much
Not outta nowhere or anything
We did test it... 8 times on heavy workloads on y-cruncher and other tools
None
Was that at 2133 or 3600
3600hrz. The gigabyte aorus b550m pro p handled it fine but this tuf motherboard doesn't
Gigglebit was very good with am4
Ok so changing motherboard and now it's got issues
I think a pic would still help just to verify everything
But we can assume the kit works
There may be something that we're missing
Here's your ram photo
8gbit rev b micron
Not bad considering
Ok I would suggest two things
First try the ram in a different order in the motherboard slots
And keep trying this until it works
Second
Set 3200 but also set xmp
So there's a dram frequency override just next to the xmp option in the advanced section
Lets you run xmp but force a lower frequency
So the difference between the tuf and aorus would be pcb shielding and signal integrity
done, twice, 2nd time just now
Also potentially the cpu mounting
There's like 16 different combos, not gonna tell ya to do that much but keep trying
unfortunately i don't have termal paste to do a cpu remount
Is fine
I would suspect it's one of these things tho
If it's stable until you enable xmp that's what I would be sus of
Perhaps a poor signalling slot or just bad pin contact (ram or cpu)
Double check all your psu cables are seated fully as well
I have already before today
Poor insertion can cause intermittent crashing (also wrong cables altogether too)
I didn't know that I'm just listing things in case not done lol
I read back and looked in here and there but I haven't been reading the whole chat sorry
This would be the first things I'd consider
Sometimes moving the m.2 to another slot also helps
Bad slot can do that
First good sign of all this is if you get a boot on 3600 working
