every ram is different on the silicon lottery

#

if not just turn on xmp and roll with it

#

You should check buildzoid videos about ram ocing, he is like the god of memory ocing

you need to survive his endless ranting tho

Setting like vdd, vddq, vddq2 and dram voltage i guess everything below 1.5 is pretty much safe

#

But im not sure...

sterile flower
#

Safe doesnt necessarily mean stable, however people have been running 1.4-1.55 vdd2 for daily with no issue on H16M, generally though just use what you need to run your freq/timings stably

Someone at Trustpilot doesn't seem to like Newegg. Been writing articles for them for 4 years, and wrote a good one for Newegg. Seems to have ruffled feathers over in Denmark, as they yanked the article first, then today all 4 years of my work. They offered to put some back if I paid them. O_o

#

I didn't even know they were outside the USA till today. No biggy, least the Important sites keep my work.

#

I'm waiting for my ram, then off to build. I'll have to use GameMax until I get my EVGA sadly.

hard leaf
#

dont

#

wait for the evga psu

#

if you waited this far, then wait a lil further

#

dont take any more risk with those terrible gamemax psu. everyone here already advised you on that

dull flint
#

especially with all these stories of fried stuff like, not even my gigabyte bomb P-GM did that DogKek

compact zenith
#

Don't start showing .me drawer full collections of CPU please. I'm still absorbing the fact people collect ram still. I got to test the MB and CPU, and PSU I'm using to test hasn't had any issues in two years. If I wait for EVGA, it's past the 30 days. My hands are tied

Unless

it's an unreleased cpu

in 10 days i guess

september 27th so so

compact zenith
#

I thought AMD already had a 16 core CPU?

#

My bday is 21st so I hope Newegg ships my psu today. Canceled first order and change it to next day after Affirm botched up. Left them to fix what they did and used another form. Just hope it goes out today.

dull flint
#

they do

#

this is the new one

#

7950x

compact zenith
#

If I were to buy AMD, and that's a very big IF, I'd get the 32 core. Can only imagine the heat that one must generate.

#

Only reason I went with I9, this time around, I just didn't find any AMD socket motherboards that appealed to me.

dull flint
#

32 core is threadripper

#

i mean honestly threadripper you'd be fine for a while but that's big money

#

7950X is supposedly huge multicore gains tho so don't take it lightly even if it is 16 cores

compact zenith
#

Wow, didn't even realize they jumped to $3900. Last time I looked, they were at $2500

#

Guess AMD finally realized they had some good CPUs they didn't have to sell cheaper than Intel.

thinking on ditching your 12900 for a 13900 felix?

dull flint
#

shhhh

maybe

depends on how good Zen 4/13th gen are

and not ditch

I will move it to secondary system

im just worried about buying an aio and a contact frame for my 13700k... the modafoka will try to pull as much juice as possible with that much cooling and my 850 wont be able to feed him along with 4080 😛

dull flint
#

13th gen is much easier to cool

#

it won't be an issue like with 12th gen

I used to work for a chip manufacturer that did outsource work for Intel. Never seen someone get fired so fast. In an hour or hire, they handled like 2k Intel chips with their bare hands, no gloves, no tweezers, and wow did that cause one hell of a mess.

send it to luke and have him review it

maybe he will review the roasted remains

good question

I mean, for science, it'll be fun

will he roast it or will it be roasted

but seriously these stories about fried hard drives, that psu is dodgy man lol

I consider myself lucky then. All 4 systems in my home run off them, and the worst that's happened is hard drives PCB's dying

dull flint

that's what I'm saying

losing hard drives sounds sketch

I mean, it'd actually be interesting to have someone who know what they're doing to take it apart and take a look

yup, send your gamemax unit to luke

I actually never suspected it could be the PSU.

Luke only seems to have one (edit: found more reviews) PSU review with no testing, so idk if he actually has any PSU testing equipment. That said Luke could prolly get it into the hands of someone who could test it

hollow thorn
#

Yea, I think Luke can only open it up and take a look at components used

#

someone like Aris can do the actual testing

dull flint
#

I mean I'd still trust luke tho

#

all he needs is one look inside and he knows most of the time

hard leaf
#

he is part of the team, he can forward the psu to the next in line for a complete breakdown anyway

did you see MLID's response

compact zenith
#

Your comment just saved you from one of my walls of text lol. Ok, what is a 7950x, and I swear, none of that OMG, you don't KNOW???!!!

#

I build my PCs every few years, and go into hybernation. I'm not a teenager that knows it all, not anymore at least.

vast meadow
#

7950x is amd's new ryzen 9 flagship that will be coming out in like a week, 5950x being the last one but this one is on am5(new platform) and will be ddr5 only. It will also obviously be better even though they are both 16 cores

#

I believe it has more cache and will have higher clocks

#

But most users cannot even take use of 16 performance cores

#

And most users rely on single core performance, gaming etc, that 32 cores would be worse because lower clocks (and in this case older generation too)

compact zenith
#

I can, but not often. Reozma was supposed to take advantage using 6 cores, but that title is in abandinware now

#

Reozma was a Terraria/Starbound clone. Crashed and burned sadly.

#

Always the ones that show promise.

#

How can the 7950 kick a 32 cores butt? Not physically, it's just I stayed clear of AMD for years, and picturing a 16 core vs a 32 core paints a picture of a small kid, and huge bully.

#

Trying to wrap my head around the idea lol

#

$850 in China. Why wait for US and just import? Or the motherboards made to reject grey market CPUs?

hard leaf
#

different architecture

#

whole another level

vast meadow
#

Obviously in multi core workloads the Threadripper 32 cores will win

#

But no regular user can really use 32

#

16 is even pushing it

#

I would be impressed

hollow thorn
#

in multicore

dull flint
#

each generation you get improvements from anything such as node shrinking so the architecture (the building blocks of a CPU) can be better to the cache (the fastest level of memory access and paging) to the platform itself or how it communicates to other parts of the system etc

compact zenith
#

Only two MMORPG games I can think of, make use of multiple cores. Don't Starve together, and rAythena, the Ragnarok emulator that uses 5 separate servers to run a world

dull flint
#

ipc or microcode is also another example of improvements

#

IPC is a generalised one though

#

implying instructions per clock or essentially how many things each cycle a cpu can do

#

a cycle implying 1Hz

#

of lets say 5GHz

#

improving IPC means more instructions or calculations are possible at any given speed

#

so therefore it runs faster

compact zenith
#

Can't say anything about Windows 11 yet, haven't had time to look at it, but with 10, had issues with aspects of the OS, not allowing use of other cores.

dull flint
#

L1, L2 and L3 cache also help a lot where it counts

#

providing more of each per core can help a lot especially with things like games where there's a lot of cached data

#

think of L cache like RAM, but it's much smaller and inside the cpu

#

but these little changes they do every generation is why the new ryzen chips take the older chips with more cores and threads to the cleaners

#

they're much more optimised, better design or architecture, lots of little changes here and there that make the newer releases have some benefit

#

unless skylake

compact zenith
#

My Z390, using more ram caused more bottlenecking with constant writing. Software developer just rewrote the games core to get around that.

dull flint
#

yeah but this is why ram only helps to a point

#

it's basically swap space

compact zenith
#

Can't for the life of me recall what the old system is called, that turns drive space into memory. I didn't even know windows 10 had it, till an update forced down my throat, turned it on, despite having 64gb of ram.

#

Brb, it's irking me lol. Looking it up.

#

Pagefile!!!!

#

My first NVME OS system, with 14 spindle drives, out of the blue started slowing down, a lot. Discovered pagefile got turned on and not sure why, other than an update, and it was stealing chunks of space off of several drives till I disabled it.

compact zenith
#

Happened right after the build 1903 update, though don't hold me to that, need to look at my logs. May have the build wrong. In mean time, I'll not use the GameMax and wait to get my platinum EVGA tomorrow.

#

5:45 this morning, while my kids were getting ready for school, my doorbell went off. Ever notice how ones doorbell sounds much louder in the AM, before having your Coffee? I answered it and it's a politician trying to hand me flyers. I tell the guy for gods sake, it's 5:45 am. His reply was most human beings are up now. I said up maybe, awake, sure as hell not. He then tells me he doesn't feel safe with me not wearing a mask. I told him, this will make you feel much safer, and closed my door on him, locking door and unplugging my doorbell. Oh, and grabbing the first cup of coffee before my kids drained the 12 cup pot for school.

#

I really need to adopt a rottweiler. My neighbor has 2 and politicians never bother him 5:45 am.

#

Ravel, that looks more like a chimpanzee. Speaking of which, always wondered why BJ and the Bear was one of the series most hard to find. Didn't realize there was more than one incident, where people lost their faces to them when they got older. Didn't even realize they got much bigger due to TV.

Just chased my Karen of a neighbor off my property. Delivery just came, and while we were checking in my Orders, Ms Karen who didn't feel like waiting, came over here and got into the poor guys face. He stepped back, to avoid her swinging finger, and we both heard crunch, as he stepped on a non padded envelope, holding my new RGB GIM fans. I really need a rottweiler lol. Something doesn't want me building my new system 😦

#

I'm just glad it wasn't my new ram going crunch 🤣

#

Last year, she ordered a pizza hut pizza, which made me want to order one too. I got mine in 38 minutes, while no one brought hers, not even 2 hours later. Asked the driver next time we had him why. My order was $50 with $20 tip. Hers was $240, no tip, and insane instructions.

compact zenith
#

New ram came today, power supply tomorrow. I can finally build. Might have an issue though. Just wrote service. When replacement came, invoice lost it's order # and turned into a return as well. Ram looks to be smarlock, which is like gift cards, where they don't work until scanned by register. Stops theft in it's tracks, but same time let's keep fingers crossed this ram is activated.

#

Amazon shipping me five new fans for the ones stepped on earlier. Won't interfear with my build as they were just backups to use in my daughter's case when I'm done with mine.

hard leaf
#

first time i hear such ram type exists

compact zenith
#

Well, said power supply was shipped but waiting for carrier pickup. That means Wednesday delivery. I get to build my system on my bday 🥳🥳 baraing any further chaos, like GameMax buying out EVGA with my luck

hard leaf
#

how can they activate if you cant boot the pc? o.O

#

seems like a paradox

compact zenith
#

Ravel, this type of security been out a few years now. I been wondering about that myself with the ram

hard leaf
#

well, the more you know

#

a new thing to research

compact zenith
#

News 7 did an article on it last year.

#

Phones, tablets, laptops, software, won't work unless scanned by the register.

hard leaf
#

cant find anything related to that tech

#

so, it came unlocked from the seller? or do you have to do something additional to unlock it?

#

pretty sure every module of ram sold today is plug and play, really weird to hear about this type of smartlock ram thing which need some kind of verification to unlock

compact zenith
#

Many software and electronic items, usually the expensive ones, unlock when scanned like gift cards. If you let's say got a CPU or motherboard that came DOA, most likely the security device didn't disable. As for my ram, it has a scan barcode that is exactly the same as phones and gift cards. My only worry is this replacement is now marked as a return, so no clue if it's unlocked or not. When I get my power supply and hook it all up Wednesday, well know

cursive epoch
#

That's not how it works? pepehmmm

#

Not for cpus and mobos, or any pc hardware ever

#

I only see something like that in retail stores and stuff, and they put some alarm device on the boxes

#

If it's been forcefully removed, it'll sound the alarm. But it couldn't lock the device or hardware inside that box since it's just a simple alarm

#

If there were such locks in place, we would've had info about it

Such things so far only exists for softwares

Hm, that's odd

#

Well, still.. why going ddr5? Any reasons behind it?

compact zenith
#

I wanted the latest version of Aorus Master, Z690 for the I9 CPU, and it only rates it for DDR5 memory

cursive epoch
#

But then you're leaving performance at the table for much higher price tag

compact zenith
#

Im sure better ram will be out next year. The timings arent that great at the moment, from all manufacturers.

cursive epoch
#

Well, if you insist on spending more money later. Then it'll be fine as a placeholder

compact zenith
#

At least you convinced me to send that used pack back.

#

Newegg shipped me a used set, then shipped me out a new so I don't risk voiding my $100 Windows pro builders license. Wouldn't matter if I added used ram after initial boot up with the new motherboard, CPU, and Ram. But if whoever sent it back to Newegg, booted up their system with it, Microsoft would see it's used, and possibly fail the new key.

#

I was also told last week, that the timings when it comes to DDR5 are a lot faster as the numbers are supposed to be divided if comparing to ddr4?

might be too late to ask but I just remembered lol

Stronger than double stick tape. Anyways, off to bed. Can't sleep. Like Xmas, waiting for that last part.

If you have an open PCI express slot, don't let the small size fool you. People think the card will only fit the small slot ones, but it fits all large ones too. Just don't plug it in next to an NVME. They conflict on older motherboards.

I can get this on Amazon?

You can get it on Amazon as well. I was using this model on my kids Asus Z90 pro gamer systems for two years now, until I did their rebuilds last week that came with wifi and Bluetooth built in with better rates. If your using a router, let's say over two years old, then the WiFi card I posted is for you. If you just got a good router this year, there is better.

compact zenith
#

Strangest thing. I'll have to look into it in the morning. About to go to bed, and as I passed my son's PC I built last week, noticed it glowing and at first thought he left it on. Taking a look, saw it was completely powered off, but the ram sticks fully illuminated and part of the RGB CPU fan blade, despite system being off. Turned power off for now.

#

Oh, fans were not spinning. Only ram and fan blade lit up.

compact zenith
#

Seems fastboot and sleep mode effect RGB, where new system shuts down, leaving ram on, and enough voltage on the CPU fan to light a few LEDs. Not sure why out of two builds, exactly same set up it happens with one, but not the other.

#

Not sure how much heat those lights generate, but would think both ram sticks lit up with zero fans running, can't be to healthy.

DDR5 might end up being a better option in the long run but some people will stick w/ the DDR4 boards simply bc it saves money being able to use DDR4 3200 you already own vs dropping more money to get the newest ram

Yep. DDR5 is finally starting to match high end DDR4 for not much more money but it is still a cost that can be avoided.

if i need them i need them.

# vast meadow Hmm, try install with only 1 ssd plugged in (generally good practice anyway)

I took half of your advice. I noticed in bios, the Sabrent Rocket was showing up as two NVME drives, and only one of the two Kingston Fury drives were showing up. I think the motherboard has some kind of issue. Remember, I built a total of 3 AORUS Master Z690 systems. Same exact hardware. Only difference was my kids got I7, and I got I9. Bootup behavior is also different. For example, if I leave the portable drive connected on my kids systems, it boots into the install and grabs the drivers off the portable. With my system, it boots back into Windows 11 install setup, so I have to disconnect the drive and reconnect it after system boots up. Something I don't have to do with the other Z690s.

#

I'm going to look at my kids bios and see if by any chance, settings are different. The Sabrent rocket loads fine on their system.

#

Oh, before I forget, until I removed the Sabrent rocket, when I booted into Windows 11 off my emergency boot up drive that has an image from my z390, the computer would disconnect the USB drive until I unplugged and reconnected it. This stopped after removing the internal Sabrent rocket.

compact zenith
#

I don't want to send this MB back, so checking a few more things. I can't see that an I9 compared to my kids I7s is related to the Sabrent Rocket showing up as two devices. Runs fine on my kids systems.

Sorry for bothering you but since you're x79/99 master i wanted to know if I need particular x79 motherboards for a 2011 socket E7-8880v3 (18core 36thr) I just found one for 20€ and I was thinking of buying it (it's basically the same as a R5 3600xt)

#

Do you recommend a lga2011 ddr3 or 4?

frosty depot
scenic solar
scenic solar
#

I saw a few for about 60-70€

amber canopy
#

As far as I know, the only way to get those E7's to actually work is with those LGA2011-1 oem boards in some servers. They're relatively uncommon and super overpriced. They don't work in normal LGA2011 boards

#

What do you wanna build a lga2011 system @scenic solar for 🤨

scenic solar
#

So no x79 2011 LGA motherboard?

scenic solar
amber canopy
#

If you wanna build a cheap system for server hosting I'd go with x99 to be honest

amber canopy
#

The chips are a better value than their older counterparts at this point. And finding a good deal on a board isn't hard

amber canopy
scenic solar
#

@amber canopy I checked on a website that shows CPU specs (more accurate than intel' ones) and socket is 2011-1 (R1)

amber canopy
#

Yea that's what I said

#

2011-1 is for those E7 xeons

scenic solar
#

Is 2011v1 socket same as 2011-1

amber canopy
#

2011 is the normal hedt/server socket for sandybridge and ivybridge i7s and xeons

amber canopy
#

2011-3 is the successor to lga2011

scenic solar
#

I have found a 2011 v3 motherboard (2 CPU) but I'm not sure if v3 stands for socket 2011-3 (if there's one) or for v3 CPUs compatibility

amber canopy
#

Yes the vendor probably means 2011-3

#

What board are you looking at

#

What country are you in

scenic solar
#

A x99 from AliExpress

scenic solar
#

ly

amber canopy
#

Oh okay

#

Yea I'm not sure what the 2nd hand market is like there for x99 boards. So maybe the Chinese boards would be a better option, idk

scenic solar
#

Let's say most tech products are like +30% the cost of US ones

#

So yes, Chinese motherboard would be better

amber canopy
#

So if the system would mainly be for server use, I'd get an x99 tf if it doesn't seem absurdly overpriced. Check aliexpress prices for the 2696v3, and 2678v3

scenic solar
amber canopy
#

What about it

scenic solar
#

What's 2011-3 for? E5?

mild jackal

scenic solar
#

Okk

amber canopy
#

How are current gen or couple gen old parts priced in Italy right now? 2nd hand or new

#

I'd only try going with x99 if you needed something absurdly cheap. And that's assuming the pricing where you are is even good

mild jackal
#

Far spreading the potato gospel blessrng

amber canopy
#

sus

mild jackal
amber canopy
#

True

amber canopy
scenic solar
#

Let me check for some x99

#

Are all x99 boards 2011-1?

#

Or are there different sockets

mild jackal
#

Again, 2011-1 is for the e7 stuff

#

Actually maybe somewhere out there are some 2011-1 x79 - as that's just the chipset

#

But that's not what you're looking for

amber canopy
#

All x99 boards are gonna have the 2011-3 socket, but not all 2011-3 boards (like the Chinese ones on aliexpress) are gonna have the x99 chipset. Though it doesn't really matter

mild jackal
#

It's confusing - but 2011 and 2011-1 are different, 2011 is the one you want

scenic solar
#

Oh god I can't find 2011-1 motherboards, I guess I'll just go for different Xeon & 2011-3

mild jackal
#

You almost certainly do not want to buy anything with a 2011-1 motherboard

#

The cost effective play here is probably used am4 +5000 series ryzen or some cheap b series intel board +12400f or similar

scenic solar
#

2011-2? I guess that's not a thing...

scenic solar
#

You mean -1

mild jackal
#

yes

scenic solar
#

Maybe I should wait for this server/system with Xeon CPU... I should first check the "consumption" of the Minecraft server I want to host and see if it's worth going for that many cores

mild jackal
#

You'll have better performance on any 5000 series vermeer ryzen

amber canopy
#

Yea but then you can't brag about running the best platform

#

🤓

mild jackal
#

Gonna need wrx80 for that

amber canopy
#

Pfft

mild jackal
scenic solar
#

So basically lga 2011-1 is probably big ass motherboards with multiple CPU config? Something I may not even find on the market?

#

Probably the ones included with big servers

#

But what's the actual difference in the sockets, R1 & R2? Pinout? Because I guess they should both be 2011 pins

#

@amber canopy do you have a small list of xeons with many cores and good frequency? I did a Xeon list a long time ago but I didn't even know they used different sockets than standard ones

amber canopy
#

The 2011-3 xeons I'd check are the 2667v3, 2697v3, 2696v3, 2678v3. The last two support ddr3 which is why I recommended them with the x99 tf, since that board does too and ddr3 rdimms should be pretty cheap on aliexpress

scenic solar
#

Ok, but are 2011-1 sockets for big motherboards in servers like dəll's and IBM stuff you may find?

mild jackal
#

Yes - and to clarify 2011 and 2011-1 are different

scenic solar
#

Yes

#

Standard 2011 is 2011-0

#

While the other ones are for those "more powerful" processors like i7 & xeons

#

Ok got it

Hey guys I’m currently upgrading my 4pc. I have 4 slots for ram sticks. I have new 16x2 sticks should I remove my old 4x2 sticks or just add the new ones

I wish I could take a picture but I’m not a high enough level I guess

I remember I'd never buy a motherboard unless it had 6 slots. Now a days, trying to get a good one your lucky to find 4, which isn't a big issue since the sound system is built into the motherboards now, and Wi-Fi, so not to bad.

#

By the way, the Aorus Master z690, after updating the bios, broke the ability to shut off an NVME slot. After reboot, they all go back on again.

Not sure if your buying for gaming/Designing. If you like running your own servers and just playing, then I suggest Gigabyte AORUS Z690 with an I7 of 3.0 ghz+ and 32gb ram. If your into heavy graphic design, with multiplayer in mind, then go with 64gb ram (do not use all 4 ram slots, go with 32x2 ddr5 or 16x2 ddr5, but under any circumstances from what many say, use all 4 ram slots) oh, and I9 Processor if what you are doing can use the extra cores.

Decided to transfer my spindle drives to new system, to discover not only was the case used, the person who returned it, stole the 3.5 bay from it and trying to find the proper name so I can buy a replacement keeps showing me NAS systems.

I don't recommend ddr5 as of this time

cursive epoch

#

But I don't think anyone needs 64 gigs unless they're doing something crazy

#

Even game dev only really needs 32

compact zenith
#

I went with 64 because 32 came too damned close last year with one project and all the utilities I had to use.

#

The Thermaltake case, knew it was a return after finding the standoffs all stripped. Was simple to replace them. Wasn't till I went to put the drives from old system into new case, that I realized it can only hold 3, then looking it up, realized someone stole 1 of the 2 hard drive bays. I'd have taken the old rack from the older Thermaltake, but the rails don't match up with the glass case, and looking up drive bays seems to only give me NAS systems.
