he pre-installed the additional 4-pin connector because he has pretty extensions for all his cables so he's going to plug them all in anyway

Imo the amd drivers/control panel are so much nicer than the Nvidia ones also if you wanr to play more cpu intensive games, amd gpus acc deliver higher frame rates compared to Nvidia, but think that only applies to 1080 and 1440p

That's a bit toasty. $20-$30 will get you a good cooling pad/stand. Remember larger fans tend to be quieter. Also when the laptop runs cooler, the internal fan doesn't have to work as hard so you might end up with even less noise.
