@runic anchor RAM is cheap. Get some. 8gb is enough for 'just gaming', but 16gb is best. I wouldn't recommend going past 8gb on such an old system though.

Normally I am a source of information, but I do have a quick question. PLEASE REPLY IF YOU KNOW WHAT'S DOING THIS.
Where is the setting to change how much system memory is reserved by my RTX 2070 Super 8gb of card. It's reserving 16gb of system RAM for some stupid reason, and I happen to forget where that setting is (it's not a BIOS setting, it's something in the driver, and it's not in Nvidia Control Panel).
Stupid Windows 10 buries every setting I used to edit readily. It's holding up my workflow here. I don't fancy seeing 'Can't run Nvidia Normal Map process due to not having enough system memory (RAM) available'.

There's often RAM cheap for sale, used, but still working (RAM sticks don't often break unless something on the motherboard or power supply breaks critically). 3GB is murder these days, especially if gaming. I had to bump up the email PC in the front room (ancient athlon II x2 240 / 2gb ddr2 / Geforce 8100 series video - circa 2008) about a half-dozen years ago from 2gb to 4gb (read: raided the junk drawer) so that Windows 8.1 (at the time) would run properly and feed it a 120gb SSD. Still in use today on otherwise all-original parts. It refuses to die. It made a fool of me wanting to upgrade it. Runs okay with 4gb but it's obviously a pokey slow old thing. It was the last from the XP era machines - but if you're a bit strapped for cash like any college folks would tend to be - slow computer is a million times better than NO computer.

Sit here and wait 10~15 seconds while my system boots only to be made a fool of when the Athlon II x2 2.9ghz PC in the front room used for 'grandma's email' boots Windows 10 in FOUR seconds from BIOS hand-off.

@runic anchor yeah i set up my old Haswell system (Z97 4790k delidded with liquid metal / air cooled / Raid 0 256gb Q-pro SSD's (MLC) / 32gb 2400mhz cl-11 memory / Radeon 7850 2gb / Sound blaster sound card) so my little 11 year old niece could play Mine Craft on it with mods. She loves it, and I'm just glad to dust it off and not waste it. It's still a good machine, and I used it for a week or two when I blew up my ASRock motherboard by doing nothing other than running a 3950x on it for two months. Asus for the win folks!

@viral agate yeah I wouldn't go from a 1080Ti 11gb card to anything with less VRAM. Games will start needing that extra few GB of VRAM soon anyway (some already need it).

Buying an 8gb card new and paying MSRP for it right now is a fools errand. You're buying something that will not max out texture details on next year's titles.

I got an 8gb card in 2016 and it used half the VRAM right off the bat. Fast forward to sometime around 2019 and it was using most of the 8gb. Now, things will start to more commonly go over 8gb of VRAM since there's more cards coming out that have over 8gb VS just the 1080Ti / Titans / 2080Ti and Radeon VII

I think dismissing radeon for anything other than 1080p gaming just because that's one of their strongest points compared to Nvidia right now is short sighted. After all if you're after for solid 1080p gaming, the last thing you should be looking at is at $600+ graphics cards

i didnt realise thats what people were doing so i got to where i am now with my 1060 and a 650w gold PSU that are about to be replaced and sold on ebay for hopefully £150 which i can use on some new storage drives or a new MOBO
