Bruh when they break and get treated like crap yes

#

Find a WELL TREATED VW

#

It'll be nice back

#

No end to the problems on my E36 until I sold it

#

I neglected that thing and it came back to bite me hard

remote salmon
#

Nope it’s basically the same maintenance as BMW but a bit cheaper

balmy egret
#

I guess I'd be learning about my car more at that point

remote salmon
#

Just change your oil more often than the manual tells you to and then the regular service intervals

#

And if something breaks take it to a German car mechanic

#

Your normal mechanic will destroy it like they did my X5

Yikes okay

@trim nacelle If you were to tell somebody to get a Mk7 GTI, what's the highest mileage you'd tell them to get?

trim nacelle
balmy egret
#

Gotcha. Makes sense

trim nacelle
#

I mean, what else would you expect

#

Lower mileage = less operational cycles = longer mechanical life

balmy egret
#

Yeah but I was wondering if it was something like "the car takes a dump at X amount of miles" (like my Focus)

trim nacelle
#

Oh

#

@balmy egret sorry back

#

Well typical things I said to look for are electrics

#

I haven't done a huge amount of study on these cars but for a gti I'd look at several things in particular

#

The quality of the dsg

#

Does it feel normal?

#

The tires

#

Brakes

#

At 80-100K belts

#

Nothing else really comes to mind atm

#

If the car was abused though then any number of things

#

If I'm not mistaken, inside the compression chamber you can get a lot of build up around the edges due to mistreatment of the engine

balmy egret
trim nacelle
#

It's fixable but NOT cheap

#

They have to take the top off the compression chamber

balmy egret
#

yikes okay

trim nacelle
#

So yeah, the better and gentler it looks like it's been treated, it gets exponentially better

#

That doesn't mean you can't thrash it, but you gotta treat it well for the treatment you give

trim nacelle
#

So somewhere about like, 60-70K miles

balmy egret
#

I mean yeah. These are German cars. They're gonna want to be driven hard

trim nacelle
#

As I said, don't know a whole lot about the 4 cylinder, I just don't treat mine like trash kekw

balmy egret
#

My alternative is a Volvo S60 lol. Just hoping I don't have to result to that

trim nacelle
#

Depends on the year

#

Some of those turn FOREVER

balmy egret
#

Thinking about facelifted second gen at the oldest

#

The seats fold down, so that would be great for when I go mountain biking (at least until I get a tow hitch setup for it lol)

#

A Mk3 would be nice though. They look good if you asked me

trim nacelle
balmy egret
#

I know barely anything about them tbh. I just saw that they're a thing and I'm like "yo I feel like I'd look good stepping out of that"

#

Wait wtf I just noticed (in that photo at least) that the gas cap is on the front driver side

balmy egret

#

Dieselgate just revealed how shockingly bad they were at the time

trim nacelle
#

No they are

quick eagle
#

And all the gizmos needed to make them pass regs make them break down all the time (oft catastrophically)

trim nacelle
#

Dieselgate revealed that VW was lying

south yew
#

There was another manu as well

#

Ford?

#

Dodge? Much more recently

quick eagle
#

I hope you're chill with having your diesel constantly sit at the mechanic because it broke again

trim nacelle
#

Diesel is in fact quite economical for fuel thus can be better due to low rev range torque

quick eagle
#

Cheap
Reliable
Economically friendly

You have have 2 with a diesel

trim nacelle
#

There's a whole industry that relies on diesel

#

It's called logistics

#

It's the most efficient for the type of work it is needed for

#

But dieselgate ruined the notion of diesel as a whole

#

Cos VW were falsifying their numbers with manipulative engineering

quick eagle
#

Even before dieselgate
Diesel cars only really took off in Europe because of heavy subsidies

quick eagle
trim nacelle
#

It is

quick eagle
#

Like you can have all the fancy stuff that make a diesel pass emissions

trim nacelle
#

A diesel engine has far more torque at low bands than a petrol one

quick eagle
#

But you WILL have a maintenance nightmare

south yew
#

I mean my Diesel truck gets 32+ MPG, very econimical half ton full size truck

I also sell semi trucks for a living

quick eagle

trim nacelle

There's a whole reason Australia refuses to let toyota stop selling the Land cruiser

south yew
#

Nah

trim nacelle
#

Specifically the v8

#

It's just unbeatable for one's needs here

south yew
#

There's a lot of smack talk about modern emissions systems but most are pretty reliable now

quick eagle
#

Again

trim nacelle
#

They will pay 200K+ for a v8 LC

south yew
#

Older ones, not so much

trim nacelle
#

More for a diesel

quick eagle
#

Economical =/= environment friendly

trim nacelle
south yew
#

The exhaust coming out of a modern diesel with proper emissions systems is extremely clean

quick eagle
#

I don't argue they're not economical

trim nacelle
#

Less fuel used = more environmentally friendly in a relative sense

south yew
#

Like, the trucks come to us with 3000 miles on them and the exhaust stack is still shiny metal

#

Better than cars :/

trim nacelle
#

They were beating petrol cars back in their peak

#

For mileage

#

VW had a whole diesel.program with audi at the time in Le Mans about it

quick eagle
#

Then if they are so perfect

Why are they falling off even to this day

trim nacelle
#

They were going far longer on the same tank of fuel cos it was diesel

quick eagle
#

Like dieselgate has been so long ago nobody cares anymore

trim nacelle
#

These were audi r10's

south yew
#

Because diesel is smelly and more expensive in the US

quick eagle

#

#

trim nacelle
south yew
#

Tesla is over rated but at the same time also the largest due to subsidies

trim nacelle
#

It's smelly, it sticks all over the pumps

quick eagle
#

BEVs in general kinda feel like a scam to me

south yew
#

I don't mind diesel but I also kinda live with it every day lol

trim nacelle
#

It gets on your hands

quick eagle
#

PHEVs are really amazing tho

south yew
#

BEV's are a stepping stone to hydrogen IMO, which is the way we should go

trim nacelle
#

Diesel is really grotty compared to petrol

south yew
#

But scarce resource with no infrastructure

#

I also sell electric equipment

#

It's impressive but also a bit impractical currently

trim nacelle

Ya

#

That's my main issue with all electric rn

#

It's just not long term thinking

quick eagle
#

I really, really wish Nissan didn't go full cringe and make the GT-R name dead on arrival by making it a BEV

trim nacelle
#

It's great for small deployment

#

Like say, a city car

quick eagle

But they did so

trim nacelle
#

Home power

#

Like fantastic

#

But those who say it can replace everything are crazy

south yew
#

Power grid cannot sustain full electric

trim nacelle
#

You'd have truck drivers pulling over every 4 hours for half a day recharging

#

Cars filling ev queues and paying more per refill than fuel

#

The grid having to be several magnitudes more dense

south yew
#

Kenworth Toyota Hydrogen semi is impressive

trim nacelle
#

I love the idea, I hate the lipstick on it

trim nacelle
south yew
#

The power requirements to charge the packs on semi's are ridiculous

#

You need industrial power, 480VAC 3 phase 100 amps or more for a decent charge time

#

Even our sweeper at that rate takes 2 hours to charge

trim nacelle
#

Absolutely insane

south yew
trim nacelle
#

Yes

south yew
#

Which takes massive electricity

#

So round and round we go

trim nacelle
#

They've mostly fixed the hydrogen storage issue though

#

Thank god

south yew
#

carbon fiber tanks

trim nacelle
#

Hydrogen ice's could've been great

south yew
#

what do you mean could've

#

They're coming on strong right now

#

at least in the heavy vehicle segment

#

Cummins is making one, others are following

trim nacelle
#

Taken them only 20 years

#

Zero emissions tho

south yew
#

Hydrogen storage was the issue along with efficiency

trim nacelle
#

Yes

#

But make it widespread, and everyone switches

south yew
#

Modern DI tech is making it possible

trim nacelle
#

The interesting thing about this is it may add a lot of benefit to other industries too

#

Hydrogen powered rather than electric

#

Less strain on the grid for heavy industry

south yew
#

but more strain to create hydrogen

#

That's the next hurdle

trim nacelle
#

Ye

south yew
#

Water is also becoming a precious resource with all the droughts etc. Lots of pushback for cracking it for fuel

trim nacelle
#

Well as long as governments don't turn this into fanfare it's fine

south yew
#

Can use seawater but then you get contaminants in it

trim nacelle
south yew
#

Now we recycle our waste for water in most cities.

trim nacelle
#

So what do we use? Wood? Oh no deforesting

#

💀💀

#

Like

#

You gotta pick something

south yew
#

Osmosis desalination with nuclear for electricity for cracking. Unpopular tho

trim nacelle
#

Yeah cos people are afraid after chernobyl

#

Funny that

#

Like dieselgate

south yew
#

Fusion is coming along quite quickly as well

trim nacelle
#

We could go on and on honestly

#

People just don't have the capacity to understand you will never have a perfect choice

south yew
#

No, you wil not

trim nacelle
#

Water however is probably going to be the closest we'll ever get

#

We need water to survive, so it's perfectly symbiotic to our needs

south yew
#

REcently a tokamak reactor created more power than it took to start the reaction. Big progress there

#

60 second run time I think?

trim nacelle
#

That's fascinating

#

Genuinely wonder what the long term effects could be out of that though

#

Is fusion always safe 💀

Good for making warp drive material 😂

trim nacelle

That's a weird one

#

My first thought was fuses

#

But maybe something else like transmission

balmy egret
#

Maybe check for corrosion on the battery terminals. More corrosion = less contact with the battery

trim nacelle
#

Yeah that's a good one

balmy egret
#

The engine is reliant on the battery in cars, so I'd kind of imagine that

trim nacelle
#

It kinda sounds power related

amber rock
#

It only happens when I stop breaking though, which makes me think it's something else

trim nacelle
#

Does the whole car switch off or just the engine

amber rock
#

It just won't gas, the car stays on

trim nacelle
#

Won't be battery then, maybe a short

amber rock
#

I'll take my foot off the break and hit the gas, it rolls back for a sec then jolts forwards

trim nacelle
#

It's not done this before right

amber rock
#

And its not every time, now that we're not in bumper to bumper traffic it's stopped

#

Nope

#

And were driving from jersey to CT, which is a 5 hr drive with 2hrs left

amber rock

Did you have the AC on a lot

balmy egret
#

I’m reading the fuel delivery is a common issue on that year/model

amber rock
#

Yes

trim nacelle
#

Hmm yeah

#

Fuel pump could go

amber rock
balmy egret
#

Doubt it

trim nacelle
#

I'm still wondering if it's maybe the clutch or in a rare case the flywheel is slipping

balmy egret
#

Doubt it because I would've had that issue with my car by now lolll

amber rock
#

Flywheel?

#

I really don't know much abt cars

trim nacelle
#

I'm not really a mechanic per se so I'm probably not the best to ask for this lol

#

I know a lot about how a car works, worked on one? No

balmy egret
# amber rock Flywheel?

The clutch (on the transmission) engages into the engine's flywheel to make the car move. The clutch disengages to shift gears or when you come to a stop

amber rock
#

I can change my oil if I have to and my spark plugs

amber rock
#

But would it be a consistent issue?

balmy egret
#

It would probably be the clutch more than it would be the flywheel (at least I'd imagine)

trim nacelle
#

A lot of google is saying similar things but neither I or google are mechanics

balmy egret
#

Yeah I'd take it to someone you trust soon, when/if you can

trim nacelle
#

Maybe drop it into a mechanic for a quick stopover

#

Yeah

#

I would tell them what it sounds like

amber rock
#

Yeah we're going to when we get home I wanted to make sure it was OK to keep going

#

My dads friend runs a shop so we'll bring it to him

trim nacelle
#

Idk how bad it seems

amber rock
#

It hasn't stalled in a hot minute

trim nacelle
#

But if it's fuel it could break down on the road

amber rock
#

Been at least an hour without issue, and it was consistently happening while we were in slow moving traffic and idling a lot

trim nacelle
#

Only slow moving traffic huh

balmy egret
#

Oh you know hold on

#

Clutch could be getting hot tbh

amber rock
#

Ye aside from that it hasn't happened

balmy egret
#

It's engaging and disengaging constantly

amber rock
#

That makes a lot of sense

balmy egret
#

(Idk for sure though. My car would be prone to this but it hasn't happened yet)

amber rock
#

No lights are on on the dashboard btw

trim nacelle
#

Does it have any difficulty turning on

amber rock
#

Nah

#

Alternator/ignition are both fine imo

trim nacelle
#

Have you tried turning all the interior stuff off in traffic

amber rock
#

I turned the ac off for a few minutes but it didn't make a difference, I was sweating too much to wait longer lol

#

Side note, new York and jersey drivers to not give a single F about cars with their hazards on

trim nacelle
#

Oooo ok

#

Air flow maybe

#

This seems a bit more plausible given it

#

it's specifically traffic

#

When you're on the highway, the car will intake a lot more

#

@amber rock does it feel rough when it's happening

#

Or just slipping and stalling

#

like the engine making a weird noise

amber rock
#

Uhh

#

No noise

#

When the gas would kick in there mightve been a noise?

#

Like a sudden jolt

trim nacelle
#

Maybe

#

Few answers here but a lot are pointing to the same common choices

amber rock
#

Gas consumption seems low honestly

trim nacelle
#

Also

amber rock
#

Not high

trim nacelle
#

You're using the correct fuel right

amber rock
#

Yeah

trim nacelle
#

Not mixing low grade or anything

amber rock
#

Only regular unleaded, I was worried they put the wrong gas in when we stopped in jersey (they pump for you) but they didn't

#

We checked the receipt to be sure, that was my first thought tho

trim nacelle
amber rock
#

It seems really low but it could be. The car isn't mine, I've only driven it a handful of times

trim nacelle
#

What's your average

#

Does it have a readout

amber rock
#

Sadly no

trim nacelle
#

MMmmm hard to say then

#

Cos if it was REALLY low compared to the known average, and since you said it's quite warm

#

Would be sus of fuel pump

#

Esp. since motor says it's a common issue

amber rock
#

We gassed up like at least two and a half hours ago and were just now getting to 3/4 a tank

#

And it can't do better than 18mpg or so

trim nacelle
#

That doesn't sound unusual tbh

#

Had to think for a minute

amber rock
#

Oh nah it was four hours ago

#

I just checked the recipt

trim nacelle
#

That does sound low

#

Lol

#

Take it to a mechanic and have them check the fuel pump lol

amber rock
#

Alr

#

Ty

#

So fuel pump, oxygen sensors, clutch, and maybe fuel delivery?

#

Ofc pump goes with fuel delivery but you get it

trim nacelle
#

Fuel pump, oxygen sensors, EGR, clutch/transmission, spark plugs

amber rock
#

Ty

#

I can most likely rule the last one out

#

It went for an oil change a few weeks ago and they check the spark plugs at the same time

trim nacelle
#

Yeah I put the sparks at the end cos you never know

#

I'm not really thinking it is them

silent meteor
#

thats an interesting issue. I agree that it is likely a fuel pump issue. couldnt be flywheel because automatic cars dont have flywheels. but yeah id check all those things that Felix said to check.

south yew
#

@amber rock

#

It could also be the fuel pumps

#

That Volvo has two fuel tanks

#

One transfer pump that moves fuel from one side to the other, and a secondary pump that gives it to the engine

#

What happens is that the transfer pump weakens or stops and the secondary pump starves for fuel. If no check engine light, could be either one

#

Or not, that's a different model

#

I was thinking of the XC90. That's the one with twin tanks. I'll stick with loose battery terminals.

south yew
#

Battery is in the rear under the floor cover. Common issue with these is a leaky rear door seal and the compartment getting water inside with corrossion.....definitely worth a look.

amber rock
#

I think Felix was right abt the clutch overheating but we're going to bring it in to the mechanic tmrw

south yew
#

It's a manual?

amber rock
#

Def going to have the fuel pump checked

#

Nah

south yew
#

Auto's don't have clutches, well they do, but your symptoms don't really describe a clutch issue

amber rock
#

Hm alright, I don't think it was battery related however

#

The only thing that would fail was the gas/engine, nothing else was turning off

south yew
#

You'd let off the brake and it would stall?

amber rock
#

I'd have my foot on the gas and we'd start rolling back and then jolt forwards

south yew
#

If it doesn't do it again I wouldn't worry too much. Having the fuel pressure checked isn't a bad idea and shouldn't be too expensive. That will reveal a fuel pump or delivery issue

south yew
#

Could also possibly be a small leak in the brake vacuum booster since it only happens when you let off the brake. Might be worth checking that also to make sure it holds vacuum.

#

Each car is half a house

So it's 13000 homes roughly

#

Ok so we assume the grid in either of our countries are maxed out

#

You'd need half as much power generation again for every household *having an EV to comfortably handle the load on the grid

#

And that's ignoring all the lithium overhead, entry prices and allat

mighty gulch
#

turns out electric cars suck back a lot of battery

faint wadi
# mighty gulch and how is the energy being made?

In all fairness it is more efficient for a power plant to make the power than it is for your engine to make it on demand, assuming your utility company uses renewables in at least some of their power production

mighty gulch

this is fair

Still find it insane that a cybertruck costs $75 to charge for 1.5 hours at a supercharger and only gets 275 miles range

Yeah it’s only teslas that are like that

I actually enjoyed my KIA EV6 rental

mighty gulch
#

(i really doubt it's going to give a substantial boost)

faint wadi

Technically yes but then there's additional weight to push so it's less efficient. EVs are a balancing act.

mighty gulch
#

i mean, when the cybertruck is a 3000kg piece of metal

#

for the base model

#

what's like 10 more kilos

#

people aren't gonna be using the cybertruck to do truck things anyway

faint wadi

Only 10 kilos? That wouldn't be enough battery to make any difference at all

mighty gulch
#

well idk how much the battery boost thing is

#

it's not even out yet lol

#

well last i looked

#

it's not real yet

I assume it must be under 100kg if it's supposed to be attached by the consumer

faint wadi
#

The original cybertruck battery is 721kg

mighty gulch
#

oh holy god

#

the battery pack is real in fact

#

and it weighs like 273kg

#

because it's not supposed to be user replaceable or removeable

faint wadi
#

Oh cool so it probably extends range like 25%

mighty gulch
#

I musta forgot we were talking about tesla lol

#

120 miles extra range from advertisements

faint wadi
#

Let's not forget if you ever go through a car wash or heavy rain your warranty is void

mighty gulch

or if you charge anything in your cybertruck while it's stationary
