I don't have the experience, but I was about to get into photography when I asked my friend (previous photographer) whether it would be a good idea to use this old Canon EOS Rebel that I have laying around

He said stuff like "yeah it's fine if you want to get into photography. Learning the settings and everything can get you experienced enough for a real camera"

Phones are obviously limited but I'd imagine they'd help with basic photography skills (maybe editing if needed as well)

Again, I'm not a photographer but I take on a lot of hobbies and I can tell you that having the right gear (especially with some beginner experience) would be a good idea. Just start with your phone for the super basic stuff and then save up for a decent DSLR

Phones these days can shoot in raw tbh

So you could get some pretty good looking pictures out of them

Especially if no zoom is involved
