Kodak might be going out of business, so if you've been interested in film photography, do it now before film goes up even more

A slr + cost of film pretty much kills it for me

So I could probably snag a body

OOOOOOOOO

winged raptor

Yoooo that's not too bad (I think?)

I wonder what DSLR prices are like, now that people are going for mirrorless cameras

Should I get a SLR and a roll of 35

Then you have to figure out how to develop the film lol

That's the expensive part

Wow yeah those Nike D7000s are actually pretty cheap used

I already have a Canon EOS Rebel T3 (I think that's the model)

The good thing about nikon is the lens platform

There's a lotta Nikon F lenses out there

To get the camera and a roll of cheap film just to test it out

Obviously Kodak, but they're going out of business. So who else could develop it? Local places

I'm not a camera guy (yet) so I wouldn't know lol

ocean depot
#

Oh

#

These cameras don't include batteries

winged raptor
#

Oh gotcha

#

I bet you can still get your Kodak camera's film developed there too

ocean depot
#

God damn

#

The cost of a slr + film + battery & charger is going to mount up to the cost of a dslr

#

Yeah no this is not cheap 💀

I don't do these kinds of pics very often but I would say it probably has to do with clipping. untold spindle
#

The Canon r10 is great

winged raptor

#

untold spindle

winged raptor
#

Seems like it lol

green condor
#

not really, cameras are very robust and you pretty much get what you pay for from the major brands. although some like leica or hasselblad might have you thinking that.. paying over 5k for a point and shoot

untold spindle
#

Mmhhmm

#

Idk about Nokia and Sony, but this is a really good mirrorless that you can grow into. This is a good deal imo.

ocean depot
#

Yes

#

My decade old Nikon D7000 still takes decent photos (absolutely destroys a phone)

#

Think it was like $350 total with lenses

#

Mirrorless are great because they take good video as well

#

If you just want to get into photography, an older DSLR would be a decent starting point

#

I wouldn't go too old tho

slate frost
#

Not sure if I'd consider 16MP absolutely destroying a phone

green condor
#

depends on the body and lens. it's not too far off from standard 24MP

slate frost
#

I mean it's 2/3 the pixels (yes resolution isn't everything but it plays a factor)

#

iirc the iPhone cameras these days are 48MP and then use pixel binning. I assume other brands are similar

green condor
#

yeah but im no scientist but tbh pretty much all phones I've seen at 48MP have significantly less detail than a professional 24MP camera. tbh the megapixels don't mean a whole lot.

#

Few months back I was shooting with a iPhone 16 Pro and a Nikon Z6ii on a trip and the difference was very apparent

slate frost
#

Yeah I’m not saying MP is a direct comparison

#

But I doubt a 10 15 year old 12MP dslr is “destroying” a phone shooting 48mp and binning to 24mp or whatever

crude umbra
green condor
#

Mostly to the colors. Actually I found that the default raw modes on iphone often came out quite soft

tall berry
#

How’s the new iPhone camera?

untold spindle
#

Nowhere as good a real modern camera

winged raptor
#

Still gonna use my 16 Pro Max camera for media creation for work lol

cedar dragon
#

Probably not a good example because Fuji filters, but here's iPhone 13 pro max vs Fuji x-t4

slate frost
#

Lowlight it likely will, cause sensor size matters a lot for that

ocean depot
#

Modern phone cameras are still constrained by sensor size

#

Videos, however

#

Absolutely not

ocean depot
#

The problem isn't because phone cameras are bad or anything

#

They're just constrained

slate frost
#

I'm sure it's comparable but I'm mostly being pedantic about the "destroys"

ocean depot
#

I'd argue it still stands

#

If you compare the details and colour accuracy

#

And the amount of control you get

slate frost
#

Control is a big bonus yeah

ocean depot
#

A lot of problems I have when taking pictures on phones are the lack of control

#

That's what I mean when I say it would still destroy a smartphone

#

The larger sensor allows for finer details to be captured even despite the lower resolution

#

And you have greater control over how those details are captured

#

Now, if we're comparing a phone to a point and shoot then it wouldn't matter because... Just use a phone lol (The sensor size usually aren't that much bigger than a modern smartphone sensor, maybe you get some zoom but that's it)

#

Which is its intended market anyways and it's great at that

green condor
#

this isn't one to one but here was a side by side I had near edge of frame. slightly different angle but both are at 100% zoom, both are raw images one from a iPhone 16 Pro and one from a Nikon Z6ii

cedar dragon
#

Are you on iOS 26? I feel like my pictures look blurrier on the new update.

slate frost
#

Aww it didn't work

#

Blurry 48MP Photos After Update

Several users with the iPhone 14 Pro or the new version have been reporting "iOS 26 photo blurry fix" issue, missing from the library, or are over-processed.

This issue is likely to have occurred due to the unfinished ProRAW optimization in the iOS 26. To avoid facing the ''iPhone 48MP photos missing'' issue, you may update to the new iOS after a week when the new update comes.

green condor
#

I have also been trying out Project Indigo as an alternative camera app

ocean depot
#

To compare digital zoom with optical zoom

#

Because in that case you can zoom in even further with the Nikon

#

If you don't mind losing some details

green condor
#

No no, they were both shot on a native focal length, that is just the image blown up to 100% for both. On phones I never zoom because of the digital crop

Checking your images at 100% help you accurately see the level of detail captured and give you an idea of what to expect in print

#

I also don’t show full image cuz my cousin is in it lol

#

Nice

cedar dragon

molten garnet
#

you know, it took me a while to realize that you can just keep editing the photo instead of leaving it "good enough"

green condor
#

the editing never ends

molten garnet
#

it can always be better. For some reason in lightroom my photos look fine, but as soon as I export them they look really dark

green condor
#

could be a color management thing. programs like lightroom are color managed so they use the proper srgb/adobergb/etc color spaces. opening a photo in a non color managed program can render the image incorrectly.
With many modern displays this results in oversaturated colors

molten garnet
#

for me the colors look pretty similar, it's just the brightness of it that is bad

#

almost everyone I show my photos to agree that they are too dark

green condor
#

the last one is still pretty bright I would say but the foreground is dark. mostly that is just because of the lack of natural light on the foreground. for similar composition I would probably do a multiexposure hdr photo. the idea is multiple photos at opposite extremes so you can retail more details in the highlights and shadows resulting in a more consistent photo. it's also a popular technique for real estate photography

r6 is a great all around camera, in the world of nikon the competitor would be the z6iii which has very similar resolution specs, great color, slightly better rear display. the r6 has a digital hotshoe I believe which is nice if you plan on getting accessories for that. AF on both canon and sony is a bit better but the AF in the nikon z6iii, z8, z9 are much better than their previous mirrorless bodies.
imo sony color is more ideal to work with in post specifically for video, nikon has the best out of box color for photo but is building out some great video cameras with the z6iii and zr, canon has a nice blend of both worlds

#

I would really recommend also looking at the lenses on the systems. you might find something you like for specific system.
also worth mentioning:

#

r6mkii uses dual SD
z6iii uses CFExpress B & SD
a7iv uses CFExpress A & SD

CF cards are really fast but type A is a hell of a lot more expensive than type B

molten garnet
#

My main concern is low light, af, good ibis,n and the ability to take both good video and photo. Afaik these 3 all have very similar specs and such, but I can't come to a definite conclusion

@green condor or anyone, anyway or recommendations, on how to use or what to use for using a phone as a monitor for a camera, everything im seeing is hdmi cable to capture card to hdmi to usbc out cables unless thats really the only way to do it ssadge

#

potentially using a canon rebel t6i

#

idk yet if imma bring the rebel t6i or the eos m on my trip

green condor
#

yeah there isn't a super easy way to do that. I remember using a 3rd party ios app at some point with a weird usb adapter that kind of worked in some ways. There are some slightly more robust options like the phone processor/adapter thing by atomos for video monitoring and recording but I am told it is expensive and finicky. I would also look to see if the first party apps have anything available. In what way were you planning on using a monitor?

leaden canopy
#

seems canon camera connect is something that can be used but the reviews on it that ive seen, granted are old, but they arent great or super positive on the app but looking at it on the store page it looks ok from a ui standpoint, installing it right now to test it.

main reason for using it is just so i can see better. eos m is just a screen that cant be moved in any way and since its old its not accurate to the picture im taking.

the rebel t6i, screen is better than the eos m, but still hard for me to see cause bad eye sight and my glasses make it hard/awkward to actually look through the eyepiece

green condor
#

I feel the struggle of using viewfinders as a glasses user. yeah I would give some of the apps a try but typically they can be pretty laggy or low framerate when going over usb

leaden canopy
#

biggest problem of all this is im going to have to use my kit lens that came with the rebel t6i as my main lens on my trip to japan PepeRealizes

ill just bring the kit lens and 24mm lens for food pics 🗿

#

i also have another lens i plan on bringing for landscapes just to test out since i bought it a while back, holga hl-c 60mm f/8, suppose to be like vintage kinda look

green condor
#

24mm is also pretty nice for landscape. just watch the edge to edge clarity of a kit lens at wider focal lengths

#

oh neat. I wanted to pick up a vintage lens for fun at some point

leaden canopy
#

Now I just need the cables and capture card assuming canon connection doesn’t work

#

Looks funny

#

whelp, hdmi cable might have to be the move PepeRealizes

#

cmf phone doesnt support for nfc but my iphone does but i dont want to use my iphone since i have to use it for everything else ssadge

#

Yea no, just gonna get cables and a capture card. This is cooked

#

theres also like a 1-2 second delay depending on how fast stuff is moving in front of the camera and will just freeze sometimes

green condor
#

yup

#

some cameras do still have a delay on their hdmi output but shouldn't be nearly as bad. I think my nikon z6ii was near the worse end of the spectrum in that regard having like a half a second delay or something

leaden canopy
#

$60 for a capture card and hdmi cable that wont get here till 5 days before i leave because i dont have amazon prime forwardfacingpepe

might just tough it out and hope i can take pictures in focus using the built in monitor on my camera

if you can zoom in on the preview from the monitor that always helps

leaden canopy
#

just realized, im locked into bringing the rebel t6i cause i only have 1 battery for the eos m. i have 2 for the t6i forwardfacingpepe

leaden canopy

leaden canopy

it takes time i know, but the current build for magiclatern for the t6i is super super basic, just more of a "hey, we managed to get it on the camera" kind of build

#

i dont have all the features as i do on my eos m build

#

mainly like focus peak and magic zoom feature on the eos m build

green condor
#

Yeah focus peaking can be really nice to have

leaden canopy

focus peak has been really helpful on the eos m since as i said, the screen i cant move and its lower res so its harder to see without a monitor but focus peak tells me what is in focus or not

Usually large number means bigger. But in Aperture, large number means smaller

green condor
#

yes

untold spindle
#

Yes

wise moss
#

Aperture affects the amount of light a censor gets. I think it indirectly affects focus. But what affects what's in focus or not?

slate frost
#

It affects depth of field

wise moss
#

On iPhone, all I did was tap to focus right. And didn't change aperture at all

#

What makes it so oj kirkland box is in focus vs the blue downy bottle being in focus?

slate frost
#

Aperture/depth of field is how "deep" the focus area is. Changing the focus point moves the center of that depth

wise moss
#

How do you change the focus point? On auto focus, it's by clicking on the screen. What about manually?

#

Is it just called focus distance?

green condor
#

Yeah the iphones exaggerate this affect with post processing. but with cameras you always have a focus plane. objects that lie on the focus plane are where they will be sharpest, as you move further in either direction from the focus plane the image gets softer. You adjust the focus plane by turning a focus ring but many phone apps simplify this to simply tapping on an area of the image. if you lower the aperture (make it wider) the focus fall off is much quicker from the focus plane and a narrow aperture has a much wider fall off so more objects will appear in focus

wise moss
#

what are some general pros and cons of dslr vs mirrorless cameras

#

Quick Summary:

DSLR: Bigger, optical viewfinder, legacy lens support, longer battery.

Mirrorless: Smaller, EVF, faster live autofocus, modern video features, camera controls electronic aperture.

#

does that seem right

slate frost
#

Yes except mirrorless is also way more expensive

#

Unless they've come down in price, haven't checked in a while actually

green condor
# wise moss does that seem right

Lots of good deals on dslrs, but repairs can be more difficult to source. Mirrorless has some advantages with the flange distance being smaller, lenses are often lighter weight, they also have more robust video recording options.

The evf vs optical can be a big deal to some but they are so different im not sure i can clearly say one is better than the other

The electronic aperture is going to be important for older lenses. Some much older dslr lenses might have difficulty adapting to mirrorless bodies due to this or older af systems

slate frost
#

Looks like canon r100 gets you into mirrorless for sub $600. Only 380 shots on a charge though, oof

#

Using optical on my SL3 I can get something like 1500

Sigma releasing that 135/1.4 has me sorta depressed I went for Nikon’s Z mount. I felt compelled to order an a7r then canceled it for a z6ii. I’ve heard good and bad things about the megadap etz adapter.

#

My current goal’s finding an affordable z mc 105/2.8 macro, a laowa 8-15 fisheye and a decent longer, maybe Tamron 150-500 for track days around Waterford Hills speedway and annual cruises and car events. Probably favoring the 24-120/4 for the wider telephoto to minimize swapping and exposing the sensor to dust during rally events with Jankowski Motorsports; Snodrift, namely... Michigan rally.

TIL that a higher aperture number increases the sharpness of a photo

slate frost
winged raptor
#

That makes total sense. I might try again later but with focusing on different areas of my PC

slate frost

From the first photo, you can see the focus area pretty well on the top fans. Notice how the rear of the case is out of focus, then the middle of the fan is in focus, then the front of the fan is out of focus

winged raptor
slate frost
#

yeah you can see that the gpu heatsink fans are nice and sharp

So I guess a higher aperture basically just puts more things in focus, thus sharper
