You should join the server.
I should be able to this afternoon
@feral eagle @glass moat post driver reinstall
I don't get it
I have tried everything I can think of
My dad's computer gets 400 mb/s up and down
So why is mine lopsided
It's not a mobo issue, I replaced it. It's not a driver issue, I reinstalled them. It's not a cable issue, I tried a different one. It's not a router issue, it works fine for everyone else.
weird
Extremely
honestly I've seen so many windows users complain about the exact same thing over the years and I still have no definitive answer lol
That's annoying
First thing I do when my folks give the ok for not needing parental controls, I am getting linux
Just saying though, maybe linux wouldn't solve the issue still. Internet is a weird thing to work with in some cases
Whats a repeater
It's a small device that picks up the signal from the main router then repeats the signals in the area. Often daisy chained to give a house full coverage.
Unless you're using a Ethernet that's directly plugged into the main router that could likely be the cause as I had the same issue.
@crisp shadow also have you checked if your PC has bandwidth limits set?
It's a windows setting.
Outside the US, Unlimited Home Internet plans are not always the norm so Windows has a feature to limit the data consumption.
Hm
I tried changing it and nothing happened
Has anybody tried Netbird? How has it been? (I'm a current Tailscale user but I'm curious about it)
normal sata hdds
if you make a nas with a SAS compatible motherboard then use SAS drives theyre cheaper
this is all me guessing also
bet
this is me guessing idk about it
@feral eagle do you know anything bout this ?
CMR drives are typically more desirable, you probably just want SATA drives, this kind of thing is more of a per model basis but I usually just buy refurbished enterprise drives. those usually end up being HGST or Toshiba branded
sometimes I'll also look at failure rates for specific models to see about how much life I might expect
what are CMR drives
and are there a list of them ?
Sometimes they will just have it listed on retail site or you can look up the model
Possible random. I’m having issues with my internet. I went to an Orbi mesh system 8-9 months ago never had an issue with it lately have been having the issue where some devices are connected with no internet and some are connected with internet this is happening with wired and wireless devices. I’ve tried rebooting everything to see if it was a simple little glitch but that did not work. Any thoughts comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Hey guys dk if this is the place to ask but I'm moving into a new apartment that's a bit larger and I'm looking to get a new router
I'm out of the loop on the current tech. I'm looking for something around 150USD. Home speed is 300mbps, just need it for my PC and wifi for about 10 devices. The only IoT device I have will be a smart lock and some Philips Hue bulbs
glinet flint 1 should be fine for your use
$100
this type of issue could be of several things, whether it's your ISP, DNS, or router/cable feeding into the router failing/getting interference
there's not really enough information to be able to diagnose what type of issue you're getting, and would require troubleshooting
how often are the devices losing internet connection? what type of devices? are the meshed routers getting a good signal from the main router? it could be one of the mesh routers have a poor connection to the main router, and when your device switches to connecting with that mesh router, it is "connected" but not able to send/recieve data from the internet
are the wired devices connected to the main router and still losing internet connection while still having the connected status? if so, then maybe try changing the cable feeding into the router to a different cable, in case there's an internal break or something causing packet loss. Maybe if the router supports running a speedtest directly on it, try seeing if that has any issues running
maybe check out the status page or social media around your isp, maybe they're having some issues with their infrastructure?
check for any firmware updates on the mesh system, maybe try factory resetting it to see if that fixes anything
Tv is wired. Has no internet. Laptop wireless same. Xbox wired has internet
Desktop wired has internet another tv wireless has internet . iPad connected no internet all wired devices are connected to main router
I’ve tried resetting the router. Can’t find where to check for updates. I’ll have to look more when I’m home. Connection loss has been constant for the same devices
https://www.netgear.com/support/home/category?name=Orbi+WiFi+Systems here would be the firmware page
Hey thanks man. Is the TP Link AX55 still a good pick?
Where I'm from (South East Asia) glinet stuff aren't readily available. I should have mentioned that but I wasn't aware of glinet as a brand!
i like glinet since they use openwrt out of the box (reskinned but still openwrt under the hood so you get all the features of openwrt)
the ax55 should be fine too though
though ax55 isnt supported by openwrt so youll be using tplink's firmware
I’m currently looking to get a modem and router for my WiFi and security cameras also for gaming
2,855 square foot home
Technically 2 floors because of loft
Any help and or suggestions please and thank you
I’ve been out of the loop with technology my Internet is xfinity 1 gig
I’m planning on upgrading to 2 gigs so preferably something comparable
Eufy cameras
About 8 cameras
unless you need to do a bunch of data transfer for work or such, there isn't really much point in going to 2 gig speeds for a home network
i'm personally not the biggest fan of eufy's security cameras, especially with a past controversy of them recording the cctv footage onto the cloud despite claiming it was all local
for security cameras, i could recommend either going with ubiquiti's nvr ecosystem, which has one of the easiest installation (though in wall wiring would be ideal for that, and they're POE powered)
a cheaper diy approach would be using frigate, and they recommend using dahua cameras with that, but you can mix and match if you need to (also poe powered but requires a little more setup)
they recommend dahua, hikvision, amcrest cameras in that order
https://docs.frigate.video/frigate/hardware/ more information on the hardware needed/recommended for frigate
Cameras
assuming you do end up upgrading to 2 gigabit service and it's fiber, your ISP would provide you with a fiber ONT, and then i would recommend something like the gl-inet flint 2 (wifi6, only 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands, but fast) or flint 3 (wifi 7 triband, more expensive but also pretty fast)
there are other options you could go for, but i'd recommend finding a router that works with openwrt as you can have the better qos for gaming (asus routers that support asus merlin is also good)
Comprehensive list of devices compatible with OpenWrt firmware. Find the perfect hardware for your open-source networking project.
The security brain in me is agreeing with the eufy thing. Ideally you need a router that can support vlans and completely cut off the cameras from accessing the internet, using some kind of nvr system that is local only
My cousin has eufy and they’re pretty good but I’m not sure what router and modem to get?
I was looking at the asus rapture gt-be 19000ai but what would pair good with that one
It's mainly issues with trust with the brand and how they treat security concerns (but this was several years ago)
Are you getting coaxial internet service or fiber?
Coax I don’t think fiber is available where I live
Hello,
I have a question regarding mesh nodes and best possible way to set them up
My co workers have 1 starlink device and they decided to connect meshes to each person’s room
The set up is smth like this
Starlink modem >> mesh 1 >> mesh 2 … etc
Extended main network rather than new access point
All connected through Ethernet cable
However there is a lot of desync/disconnects and the speed from the main router isnt transmitted properly, barely get 10% of the actual speed in some nodes
When i searched about it apparently 7 nodes is too much for starlink main router to handle or smth
I know it is an unusual case, living in an oil rig can be tough
Does anyone have a better solution for this situation aside from getting another starlink device ?
FYI, we still havent tried using ethernet switch
I'm a bit too tired to write much, but aside from the router not being able to handle the traffic (which is somewhat unlikely depending on how many devices you have) the other possibilities are that
- The mesh nodes are too far apart/signal is too weak for it to have a stable backhaul to the main router
- There could be too much interference causing the network to be unstable (could be caused by having too many mesh nodes too close together, or other RF emitting devices, whether intentional radiators or unintentional radiators
Mesh routers could be easier to setup but a cable connection would always be more reliable in giving good connections
What model mesh points are you using currently
Usually mesh systems will have some kind of controller to manage roaming devices between points. If there are deadzones in the coverage it can cause drop outs or unstable device roaming. If this is a large area or outdoors you might want to look into longer range outdoor antennas
LET'S GOOOOO MORE SHIT TO DEAL WITH
(Photo from CrystalDiskInfo. CRC Errors on a very important hard drive: 7 🫠)
I'm about to start a farm and live off the land ffs
Watching Clarkson's Farm isn't helping with that too lol
Sick of this bruh
Bro stuck his hand in the screen
Me reaching into the screenshot
Do it its peak
I'm using AdGuard Home right now because I have a lifetime AdGuard membership & didn't feel like installing Linux to do the Pi-Hole mission. Ostensibly, it works just as well as Pi-hole did when I had it like, eh, maybe a year or so ago. Is there any compelling reason to use Pi-hole instead? I'm running Adguard Home on a 5900x/1080ti computer I don't really have another use for presently if that factors in at all
If you have adguard home, there's not really much point in using pihole
Ye, i just like how easy pihole is to deploy and the customization options. That and using it for local dns for services
I feel like AdGuard Home doesn't report everything instantly. Super annoying when I'm trying to unblock something
AdGuard Home users. If you're looking who owns a specific URL, copy the domain name and the TLD (e.g. google.com) and paste it into GoDaddy's WHOIS database search. It'll find who owns the domain, when it was registered, when it expires, etc. Use this when determining whether it's safe to unblock a domain/URL or not
https://www.godaddy.com/whois/results.aspx
anyone knows if it's better to use asus router's adguard or run a different service on a separate device, like pihole?
pihole gives you a bit more control but adguard works well enough
it's also easier for regular people to restart it if it runs into issues
(since it's hosted on the router, just restarting it should fix issues, compared to if you have a separate system that would need to be restarted seperately)
@karmic wedge @turbid canopy @noble berry @glass moat @crisp shadow if I recall you guys play Minecraft and I was hoping you could recommend me a list of performance mods Client and Server-Side for Forge on Minecraft 1.20.1. Please and thank you.
It's lowkey been forever since I modded a server sorry
Oh for clientside you want sodium/lithium/phosphor. I think they've been ported to forge
There's not many server performance mods that don't modify the way Minecraft works
The main enemy of server performance are stuff like hoppers and entities
The mods that solve those issues will cause stuff like vanilla sorting systems to not function
Or weird mob pathing, or causing items to despawn quicker
None for server. The best "mod" is allocating enough RAM and having a good CPU. Network performance is also what you'll need
That's fine.
Currently running a heavily modded pack and I would like to improve the performance.
I don't know much about server side stuff
Lithium is go-to tho
I believe there are some server side mods that change the rendering or entity handling but that’s about it
Hmm seems I will need to do some digging
Honestly
The only way to optimize server side for a modded server is for the mod developers to make their mods more optimized
The server isn't really rendering anything, it's just handling the world and some mods
On a vanilla or mostly vanilla server, your performance issues are typically of hoppers, block updates, and entities
For modded servers, it's those plus whatever badly coded or just heavy amount of simulation mods you have in the pack
You could optimize it a bit by using the optimal JVM flags but sometimes your best solution is to just use better hardware
Or set a world border
Pregenerate the whole world
(very complicated) You could also try sharding the server
Very complicated as in I highly doubt you could make it work with modded Minecraft and would likely require quite a bit of custom code
oh yeah by rendering I meant moreso the worldgen I guess would be the right term
I ended up installing a bunch of optimization mods for optimizing the code both server and client side and setting the server to use more threads for loading/rendering.
I have 4c8t from my 9950x3D and 24GB of my ram dedicated to the server now as well.
I recently noticed that my windows 10 pcs on my network are not reachable anymore and I cannot ping them from other devices. doesn't matter if they're on wifi or ethernet, the pings time out. a lan scan from my phone also doesn't show the windows devices. at first I blamed my router since I had just changed it but it's not, old router same issue.
I first noticed this like two weeks ago after my Alexa started saying it couldn't reach my pcs for wol
other devices like phones and iot can be reached so I guess this is a windows 10 problem. any suggestions?
I tried disabling the network firewall but that apparently didn't help
also I am able to ping other devices from those problematic windows pcs
That really does sound like a firewall issue
Is the network type set to private or public
private
I tried disabling it but that didn't fix the issue... perhaps something else firewall related is still blocking some incoming traffic
What kind of service is this? Like a smb share or a webapp?
Firewalls can be on the PC and router simultaneously
And in fact they are, the router mainly protects against threats outside the lan though and usually gives free reign in the lan
For home routers specifically
i dont think it has to do with the router's firewall since i've tried both new and old router
i mean i could try a third router but i doubt that'd change a thing
You don’t have like an iot network setup or something right?
i'm just setting it up by separating ssids and having iot on 2.4ghz, but I had a very typical home network setup before
it's disabled, Imean i tried all the recommended solutions but it likely has nothing to do with wifi
communication is also broken for windows devices connected via ethernet
they can connect to the internet though right? and just not in the lan? that's kinda weird
only windows pcs though? (that are having this issue?)
they do have internet connection, the router sees them on the connected devices list, but i cannot ping/reach those -windows- pcs from other devices on the network (ping also fails from router builtin tool)
yet the windows pcs can ping other non windows devices fine
so it's likely just the inbound traffic for those
I'll figure it out, i should probably test a few other non windows 10 devices too
this is peak wifi
Got a rude awakening 3am today. ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 PRO, started a light show that I didnt even know it can do. Different colors at once. I shut it down and turned on a backup till I can take a look at it.
so my family recently got AT&T fiber and its gigabit i connect via wifi and a few weeks ago i was getting 400-500mbps when id download on steam or ran a speed test and now im getting 200mbps how would i go about troubleshooting the speed on linux? my distro is nobara also ive tried running a speed test with a vpn on and am still getting 200mbps
i could use ethernet but for some reason my speed was actually better over wifi and the ethernet is through a mesh router which also should have support for gigabit
the backhaul for that mesh router probably isnt the best quality of connection
have you tried directly connecting ethernet to the main router
Can't live with parents and mom doesnt want to run a wire down to my room
I meant for testing
If direct is at the correct speed then the mesh unit is probably not getting a good connection
