Of course
This title says it best
Pretty much the same story with OpenWRT
I'm really thinking trying to flash merlin
Asus routers use the same SoC
His symptoms are similar to what I had and cake fixed it
There's a logic thread there, just, no one's done it

It could really mess up the router
It's the only one with support for the chipset but it's not supported at all
This would be a huge gamble
If it wasn't such an expensive router I'd be more willing to yolo it
Actually some of this is bs
SoC is the same but I think the other hardware differs
So there really is no guarantee
It uses an atheros WiFi chipset from my research
@supple vine was this on your page
Yes and I set my PC up for every game I had
Before we tinkered with stuff last night I actually turned it off for some reason because I wasn't sure if it was doing anything
Hmm
Let's go over everything you need to know about DumaOS QOS settings.
Music:
Courtesy of Riot Games - https://www.leagueoflegends.com/en-us/news/community/riot-music-creator-safe-guidelines/
Tried this?
So we tinkered with the settings a ton last night
And sometimes it would look better just to eventually be worse again
Was super fickle and Inconsistent
All my results of changing the congestion control and qos I sent last night and never got more than a B on buffer bloat
I mean the main issue remaining looked to be just the download bloat
And then maybe unloaded ping
Which for some reason we couldn't fix
I'm still reading all sorts of stuff
I'm curious if a DNS change would help. Maybe the ISP DNS is too slow.
We did that
@supple vine tried this?https://forum.netduma.com/topic/50971-qos-upload-not-working-xr1000/#comment-369238
@supple vine I've had a really good idea
Is the XR1000 the only router in your uh
Apartment?
House?
Burrow?
...
Shoebox?
Hobbit hole?
Hm
Yeah it's the only router I have
I was thinking about going to Walmart and grabbing a cheap one to test with and return
Oh dear
Well I'm on that same page rn
Read this
Couple this with the router handling isp settings and apparently you may have a bug with this router
And specifically (omg)
This router
It's the last one in the netgear stack not fully patched
If I could make a suggestion
Find yourself a cheap Asus Wifi 6 router
You can mesh this nighthawk to it, let the asus handle it all
Or even yeah, put a nice QoS/SQM little ethernet switch in the middle to handle it all itself
Walmart only has tp link and netgear
It's becoming very apparent to me you have the same issue I only recently had, but I was able to patch my SoC due to supported firmware, meanwhile yours is lost to the sands of time
Curses
Yeah go find an Asus
A nice RT
Or a gaming one
Or go looking for an SQM switch
Wifi 6+
Reason I say that is Wifi 6 genuinely has it's advantages coming from a router
I think, after reading what feels like
60...? percent
Of all the XR1000 posts
So many complaints, so many statements about "Duma 3.3 will fix it" and it's been years
Right
I'm starting to think you can improve with a different device
That's what I was saying last night that they are saying fixes are coming and haven't for years
That said, if what we had from last night isn't too bad and kinda works despite the ping not really shifting
That's also an option too
If it generally fixes things, good
But if not, I'd go find an Asus RT/TUF/Strix
Wifi 6
Flash merlin
Enjoy the beauty of cake
Nowadays you can do something called mesh
Basically they tie themselves together and act as one
Only do it if you can expand your reach of your wifi
And need to
that was why i was so surprised when fal said that it wasnt supported
Ikr
Like literally every other router
I live in an apartment currently so I don't need crazy reach currently
Then it should be no worries
I knew I was gonna need another router
I would go look at an Asus personally, cos they have merlin officially supported
Hey it was worth a shot
For sure
If you didn't have the single most unsupported router in existence we'd be progressing

I need a new router so badly, actually just a new wifi plan in general 😭
Verizon 5g internet
Dont even have a LAN cable with it
Well yeah
5G isn't lan

Just insane to me that a router is so bugged it literally comes with a 20ms slowdown as a feature

I wouldn't call it a bug except I've seen 3 people with the issue now unable to fix it
And the download bloat matches my own issue with poor SQM stock firmware

This fire deal?
I believe this is merlin compatible
Expensive tbh
Try looking lower end
Put it this way I have better performance on my own net and I bought a $100 one

Upgrade to the next generation of networking and WiFi with the RT-AX3000 WiFi 6 router, capable of delivering speeds up to 2. 5x faster than the previous WiFi generation. Was actively looking at that one lol
Just checking it's supported hold on
Yep it is
That is a good router imo, try it
From the router to device i mean
Good for gigabit, has merlin, built-in security software
Regardless, its garbage lol
Oh you have a router that does 5g wtf
I thought this was your phone bruv
Yeah
Wtf
Its a white box you plug into the wall
Alien magic
Some KFC store use 4g internet and it sucks
How soon does that AX3000 deliver Act
Says Saturday
My parents bought it because its 25 a month, but theres a reason its 25 a month
Cant even watch stuff in 1440p
Alternative firmware for Asus wireless routers
Despite 100mb
Gotcha
Asus warrants this as long as you successfully update to it
So only 3 minutes of sketchy time
After that you're cruising
It should be fine tho
I had to stop playing smash ultimate because of it
And i cant even play street fighter 6
Its painful
I bet you hate stick drift
I have a japan import gamecube controller
No issues here
✨
I use a gc adaptor
I do lol but not enough to get drift on them
If i want to play anything else i just use my ultimate 2c
Ong ong
Le epic
Makin fun of me for no reason, your own brethren 🥹
A bestbuy 33 minutes minutes away says it has it in store
How much
105 still
Solid if you're willing
Sorry 109.99
I can get canes if I go
Felix noooooo
I'm always guilty until proven innocent
?
Also speaking of 8bitdo
Canes is chicken food place lol
I wanna get this thing and swap out the switches
I thought so lol
You need to get canes on day

One day*
Best we got here are cane stores
Canes is mid
Specifically with their canes sauce
Its not bad
Put boba u4 blacks in
But its just chicken
I thought the same thing until I tried the sauce
Definitely mid without the sauce
Sheesh those things are pricey
Oh wait no amazon is just a rip off
I have not tried the sauce, got me there
I only first tried it a couple months ago. Didn't really like canes before that at all
I dont ever eat out so ive not had many chances
I have an odd idea. If I buy a router and forward the ports I need for some game servers would I be able to just plug the router in anywhere I go and the servers will work?
I think your IP address would change if you changed modems if I'm not mistaken
But I'm not anything near an expert at this stuff so definitely wait for another opinion
well ye if you are switching out network gateways and especially if you change location the public ip will change and you would have to send friends new address or change the addresses to any domains you might have setup (I didn't read whole log pardon if I misinterpret).
the internal addresses should be same on the systems connected to the router though
hmm
if you set up a ddns you might be able to not need to change the address people are connecting to
though you'll either need to buy or find a free domain name
You could use a proxy
Like I used tcp shield for Minecraft servers and bought a cheap domain name
Tailscale I think could handle this
Hmm so it's not as plug and play as I hoped.
I will look into TCP Shield and Tailscale.
I plan to host a public Minecraft server off my home network after I arrive in Alaska in a couple weeks.
For security is there anything I can do to secure my home network without making the ping horrible for the players?
Tcp shield is ddos mitigation as well
Completely free if youre not doing anything crazy
What do you mean by crazy? Like user count or?
Yeah like a ton of people with a bunch of mods or something
Typically around 100-200 Forge mods (most are performance and libraries) and for users it's around 10-50 people.
For hardware I plan to use 2-4 cores from 7950x3D's Frequency CCD and around 20GB of ram.
Hmmm
youll probably be fine with tcp shield free honestly
worst comes to worst you can get the paid version for 25 a month
gotcha
it worked really well for me once i got it all set up
any security concerns I should have? I have hosted multiple servers before with paid hosts but not from home yet
Me personally i had no security concerns
i recommend looking into it a bunch beforehand if you are worried
I am not really worried. Just the cautious type that likes to know if there is something I missed if you understand what I mean. I understand that DDOS attacks are network attacks using bots to overload and crash a server which seems to be the most common thing for Minecraft and that the vast majority of minecraft gamers are typically incapable of hacking (actual hacking).
Gotcha, yeah tcp shield shoud be able to help with the ddosing if that were to ever occur
@junior mulch on the new router without messing with anything
unloaded is a lot better and speeds are beautiful
Some Routers come with built in protection if I recall right?
I think Netgear had it? Like where if it detects suspicious traffic it will prevent it from gaining access until otherwise specified.
beautiful speeds
for ddos i am honestly not sure but on my netgear router in the logs it did warn of dos attacks
they werent actually dos attacks but it was showing something
I used to have a really old Netgear router that my father bought so he can setup a vpn network on it in China.
the reason im in this channel is because my expensive netgear router sucked lol
just bought an asus one lol
Oh okay.
i personally will not be going back to netgear unless they change things up
Asus makes A grade or Sus grade routers?
im not sure the rating but online ive seen lots of good things. in here as well
Gotcha.
this is the one i just got
Wow that's way less than I would of thought.
right
The Netgear we had from like 10 years ago was around $350 before import.
the netgear one was more expensive and was not getting me my speeds
if you scroll up i sent a ton of screenshots
Did it's job well but I doubt it's still working lmfao. the thing's been sitting in a car in the snow for a year now
im in my new routers settings and there is ddos protection
Do you think it's worth buying a good router not just for speed but for the sake of having a good UI?
Oh neat.
because the past year or so I have been in mexico and in 3 separate homes the Router has had a complete piece of s--- UI and by the time I had every thing forwarded I found it the community had something that blocks all incoming connections making port-forwarding a waste of time.
How is the UI? User Friendly or no?
im not a genius or anything and the ui is fine for me honestly
pretty straight forward and organized
that is way better than the sh-- I have had to look at lately.
Disorganized and looks like a 90s computer terminal
Felix i changed the dns to cloudflare and turned on the gaming QOS preset.
that really sucks
I assume it supports port-forwarding?
oh yeah
perfect. Would you say it's been worth the $100 you spent on it?
I was about to buy this but got the cheaper version
the 1800
I can vouch for the one i got so far
Yeah it seems to be good
Thank you. I think I will probably purchase it once I am settled in Alaska then.
Mexico to alaska is quite the move lol
Just put it in the cart
Nice.
Gonna put openwrt on it
sheesh
I did not know alpha was in mexico
Thats crazy
said it here lol
Moving halfway across the world
hot to cold
I have been here for about a year in a half now. Was in Alaska, MX, Alaska, Canada, California previously.
Oh true

As a californian I second this
I was there during 2022, lived in Lake Tahoe. The fire sucked but I enjoyed the Fall, and Winter.
Lived around Truckee specifically.
Is there a site I can use to test my ping to a location so I can get an idea as to what someone's ping might be to a game server?
Like for example to test my ping from here to Alaska.
not perfect but I noticed they have Canada, Alaska is just a little north west of it.
53ms from here to Central Canada so not bad
I have a VPN and I can run a traceroute to find ping times between nodes
Which game are you wondering about @true venture
Minecraft. Most of the people who play are in the United States.
What server IP/address? You can DM it to me if it's private
I wanted to know how good or bad the connection would be for someone in the lower states like Florida or Texas if they tried to connect to a server in Alaska.
Currently running it off of the Essential Mod.
Ok so that's a self hosted server, therefore you don't have an IP yet. Got it.
Right so what I can do is VPN to Atlanta and traceroute a government server in alaska
I'd really appreciate that.
I would like to avoid paying $80/mo for a server that performs worse than my PC can as a server.
real
Yep that's why when my neighbor offered to sell me an old HP workstation with an E5-1650 I jumped on it. Offered him $100 and used some of my old storage I had lying around, and now it's my plex/dns/nas/steam cache.
~150ms
Hmm. Not ideal but playable for Minecraft.
By routing to atlanta before connecting to Alaska that increases latency correct?
vs a direct connection to Alaska from Atlanta.
I'm counting that, I subtracted the 50ms it takes from CA to GA
Oh.
That's why I did a traceroute, so I can see the times for each node hop
Well it is what it is I suppose.
gotcha!
Thank you guys for your help!
np
I gotta go now so I will be back later.
i tweaked some more
Well the latency is better but the speed sure isn't
Personally I prefer cli management lol
yeah im not sure why it did that i did not lower it that much
probably just isp being suck
oh god
i set upload and download backwards
sorry isp, for now

Honestly even 150ms isn’t terrible, just as long as it is consistent
updating a game and the download speed went from 15 to 50 when i fixed it lol
Lmao
im so used to it being download then upload
but this router has upload before download
this buffer bloat is tripping man
setting the bandwith setting to automatic seems to be better
does this warrant flashing merlin on it?
Ask yourself if it's worth the risk, because that's uncharted territory.
Worst case scenario you need a new router.
what does merlin even do
It's a different firmware entirely, basically like switching from Mac to Windows
The different firmware will use the same hardware in an entirely different way
so theres a chance it will be better at handling bufferbloat?
Felix mentioned cake
what is that
Yes, and that would be a plugin for QoS https://github.com/ttgapers/cakeqos-merlin
The buffer is handled on the software side of things so unless it's a hardware or ISP level issue a better firmware will help a lot
i think the risk would be worth it
i mean the router and software has been out a while
should be on the safer side i would think
"Not recommended for connection up/down of 250Mbps or higher. Note: Users with higher up/down connections have reported lower peaks but better stability and user experience overall and continue to use Cake."
lol
They say this and then the screenshot of the status page shows 350
That's one I haven't used before so I'm not going to be much help there
watching a video currently
not sure how to install cake
used putty to ssh into the router and pasted the "installer" and it cant open a dir
maybe the merlin install failed or just need to reboot the router again
It might have a dual firmware backup system, and if that's the case you'd have to flash it twice
was just about to flash it again lol
Firmware upgrade unsuccessful. This may result from incorrect image or error transmission. Please check the version of firmware and try again.
lovely
that would explain why it didnt have cake lol
Yep that would explain it
It's probably looking for a signed image
Which you can spoof to trick it into flashing anyway but then the image needs to be written specifically for that device
but that would mean everyone doing this would have to do it
Only on devices that have that kind of lock
Other firmware does the same thing, where they'll have a specific basic image for a router that gets it to pass the signature check, and it's functional enough to flash the full version afterwards
shoot
routers not supported for merlin
lovely
v1 is but this is v2
found some forks that are made for v2 though
official merlin fork
its on the merlin website
Oh nice, I was about to suggest a different one that has support for it officially, DumaOS
Oh is that what it comes with? What I'm looking at must be a modified version of the stock OS then
NetDuma
thats what my old router had
DumaOS 3.0
the one with all the issues that the devs havent fixed for years depite saying fixes are coming
Yeah that sounds about right from the forums I looked at
They claimed to have "beta versions" with fixes but never released them
yeah
my internet speeds change so much throughout the day its impossible to set proper bandwith limits
earlier i was getting over 900
now im getting 200+
like what
turned off qos for the 5 most recent ones to see what speeds im getting
download would go to 800+ then drop to 500+
lovely
then only started getting 200+ randomly
having an isp tech come out here
got someone coming tomorrow morning cause this is insane
You're getting so much more upload than advertised lmao
Is this on wifi or ethernet
You enabled cake yeah?
Set cake to about, 70%-ish of your download, same for your upload (do 32-ish mbps)
Try test again see what it does
The settings for cake btw, you should be able to leave the settings either at 48 (default) or 42
This gives me hope tbh
Your unloaded dropped right down, so appropriate rule sets should fix that other bloat
Try setting your test device (wired) to be added to game boost
Insane to me that a nighthawk adds 10-15ms latency on it's own

The RT's are really good
Yeah they seem to be
Not the most amazing things but they review well
Got one coming monday
If you run into buffer issues have a look into merlin like above^
Cake is a good SQM custom feature
Fixed my ass spikey latency right up
yeah i have no clue why the router went crazy on the unloaded
but yes we are on merlin and cake
now
Keep messing with it lad it's already looking way better
The goal is you have most of your bandwidth and better latency
Remember to use game boost as well on the router
It also comes with endpoint security
dude when i was on the merlin website and it said V1 was supported and not v2 and i checked my guide and it said v2 i was crushed
until i found that other fork
Ye ur good lol
I'm also on the other fork btw
So, qos, cake, set up dns properly
Automatic ip wan
Cake should be pppoe vlan or default
So -48 or -42
Mtu and mru may also need adjusting
(go from 1492 and go down 10 at a time)
From this point onwards I'd be shotgunning it out basically
Game boost every device that you play games with including the test system
All this^ should be everything you need to do to get a good latency result
If you achieve that with not full bandwidth, hell, even half the full bandwidth, that's a victory
where is game boost lol
mines does not have that
Gear up
It's called gear up
Same thing different name
Oh wth it's not on the menu
yeah i got scammed or something
Ah it's not available on US models
Interesting
Ok have you changed any of the other settings on the qos
Ones we didn't talk about
thats when i got this
but
my bandwith was set higher
let me test rn
Ok
Hmmm
Can you screenshot the other qos tab
Oh I think I know what this is
Ok yeah send me that screenshot
You still there mate
@supple vine
sorry yeah working rn and was on a call my bad
- In windows on the pc
Go to settings app
Go to update
Click on
Pause for 1 week
Then go to advanced
Delivery optimisation
You're looking for "Allow downloads from other devices"
Turn that off as well for now
Then go to network and internet
Click on your ethernet connection
Set your profile type to "Public"
And set connection as metered
With these things done, close everything else down (That you can obviously)
Including discord
Like right down
Then run that test again
I'm willing to bet that +45 turns to +0
If I'm right then we cracked it finally
okie dokie
42
Try 48
Should I have mpu set at anything?
No
And mode normal?
Ye
So did this tab not give a list of different tasks you can prioritise?
The QoS
For "Gaming, media streaming" etc
It should be below the QoS tab you screenshotted
It did
Ok have you set those?
Until I changed it to cake
But
Try reconnection to the router
Oh yeah lol
Like my lan to PC right?
Ye
Also try swapping to the other DNS settings on the router as well if need be
You might find google or cloudflare is better, depends on your situation
I did switch to cloud flare
Google may be better for you, we won't know without testing
If you change dns tho you need to reconnect otherwise the test is skewed
Heres when I initially did that after just getting the router
Will try after this test
Ye
Oh man this is bad
Unloaded spike?
Ok swap back to -42
We're shotgunning settings so this'll happen
So 42 is the closest, we're just missing something still
Switching to 42 then testing
Retest
Then will switch to Google DNS and retest
Alr
Still terrible
I have a contact ping to Google running and it's ping is spiking and sometimes dropping while running the test
Ok do google dns
On 42
Reconnect to the router
I would do that under wan right?
You must reconnect after changing dns
Not under lan
Ye
Also under there, we will start changing mtu
So it should default 1492
After DNS change and reconnect, test 1492, down 10 every time
Where it says wan mtu?
Ye
Default should be 1492, fill that out
Then adjust accordingly down with every test
Sometimes MTU being too high is what causes the nasty jitter/bloat
Fascinating
Yeah set mtu try again
If that doesn't work, disconnect, reconnect to it
And reboot router as well
Still applying settings for some reason
Well I went to reload the page and now the page won't load lol
Still have Internet tho
Still not loading
Should I reboot router
Rebooting takes a long time
Like 4 minutes
It will disconnect in that time so you may need to refresh
The asusrouterm.com site can't be reached
Reboot it
Didn't load Asus router.com still
I had to put the default gateway in to get it to load
Odd
Applying wan mtu again
Actually worked this time
Private DNS stuff sometimes acts funky
I always just use the router's IP aka the gateway IP to configure
Actually, maybe the problem is because you're not using the router's DNS so it's bypassed
Well
Maybe you should've set up a private DNS server and pihole

Pain
Ok so google just slow? weird
I blame my ISP
Also why are you taking pictures instead of screenshots lol
He told me to close discord lol
Try what 343 said, do no DNS
Oh
So I'm on my phone
Amazing
Try automatic DNS like 343 said but also do MTU 1452
Default DNS you mean lmao
Which would be the ISP's dns
Autocorrect moment
Is this my punishment for the unending stream of ralicx jabs
Just like how he couldn't hold back
Poop
Asusrouter.com still doesn't work anymore for some reason
Fixed it
Was dns director causing it
Tbh
Asusrouter.com is such a long name that it probably would be faster to just type 192.168.1.1 or whatever the subnet it's on
I have it pinned anyways
Lmfaoooo
At least if you can use the numpad
What sorcery changed
Also ☠️
Dude I think it's the time of night or something
That's why I'm having a tech come in the morning to look at stuff
Because it should not be changing this much
Make settings like this
My old ISP got faster at night due to less people using it
Ok good
So something we've changed has made it go cuckoo
Hmmm
Ok recall
What's been changed so far
Anything you remember, it's important
Or we can take the easier road, just factory reset, start over

It was looking good at the start
I mean I don't think we've changing anything crazy
If turning off QoS improved it (assuming it wasn't just a freak coincidence) then it has to be one of the qos settings

Maybe the initial settings isn't correct
Maybe we are supposed to be using another option
We may need to test all these for WAN packet choice
Ok unloaded dropped like a stone
Good sign
So something else is at play
Set upload to 32mbps
download to 215mbps
Try that
Just for the test
If it still suffers, change mode to ATM
Try cake set to 22 overhead and mpu 64 (this is the recommended setting from OpenWRT using cake)
Mode ethernet I think?
Average networking troubleshooting
I may have forgotten but is this dsl?
It would help to know what his isp net type is
you never know
It can be vdsl2, ethernet vlan, or conservative default
Based on what I remember
Mode might be normal, atm, ptm
Not sure there
I have spectrum ISP if that helps any
Was that with the settings I said or something else
With this stuff
Testing this now
Just like ral-
Good question
Isn't one of the options ethernet vlan
Yes
We just got it back to 20
Try that first since it seems like that's the recommended option
This is Ethernet with vlan
Here's the chart if nobody looked at the link I sent earlier
Also I'm making the assumption that you're using DOCSIS because of your speeds
It can also be fibre
True
Gigabit can be fibre
Coaxial
Ok coaxial would be DOCSIS then
Hmmmmm
That's not atm btw
Ye
Try the fibre settings, ATM
See what it does
Ok just confirming, spectrum is automatic IP for WAN
We just did Ethernet with vlan but I'll change to atm
Yep 42 84 atm
Whipper snapper
Gonna try that again lol
WHAT
Didn't change anything
Waddahail
MPU 84 mode PTM
Un momento
Mode normal
Testing
Yeah just that
If it goes back to +40 +0 I'm convinced it's some setting
Meaning cake is either correct or mostly correct
And possibly also windows in the mix
Wait are we still using Chrome
That could be a factor yeah

I'm edging
Earlier my speakers randomly said something to me
Like bumblebee from transformers
Scared the hell out of me
Narrator off
They are hooked up to my record player
Which had nothing on it
Had to have been a ghost
If it asks for the cube, ignore it
Spirit box type jazz
Edging
Ffs
We live in a society
Go back into the router
Change MTU way down
Lets try 1392
Then Download bring up to 240
Test agin
a gin
LOL

"Just change to cloudflare DNS"
Me ignoring my own latency issues since I don't even play multiplayer games

Oooooo
Ok MTU back to 1452
I think you have something trying to vampire your net on windows
I get a b on bufferbloat and I'm like b for better than I need already
Make sure as much as you can on there is closed down
So just edging
Test once MTU is set back and you can confirm a bunch of programs are closed down
It can be literally anything
Even some rgb software
Cos then it'll shift you in the QOS queue
Download gets rerouted
God we're so close
That stupid download bloat

Testing mtu 1452
1452 should flip the upload back
It did but not to 0
Good enough
Ok yeah I suspect your pc rn
Something is open that is reprioritising your router
Flush all programs you can
Cos what I think is gonna happen here is you will get into a game, I bet the ping is now 20
20-25
But the waveform test ensures consistency
Earlier even when I had the good score before Merlin I opened valorant and the ping was horrible
Steam, discord, even printer software
Yep anything that isn't core useful
Ok it went down a little more
Interesting
Keep closing windows programs

Anything that isn't basic windows or edge
Autocorrect cooked me
Like no recourse
You are not gonna believe this
Maybe it was a bunk test
Plug it back in
Ok
anyone here happen to be good with traefik
We didn't change anything router side so that can't be a normal thing
Oh
Can you use your 4g/5g on phone
Yeah
You'd think so
I'm saying I think my ISP is trolling me or something
Bunk modem or my coaxial sucks or something
Reboot modem?
After lan reseat btw
well coax isn't the most consistent either
Lol
