Idk, I dont really see AI being truly detrimental to games. Will see a wave be bad AI games, then no AI games, then couple decent AI games, then lots of decent AI games.

#

Pretty much like with anything that isnt really ready for major production use (unless the implementation uses the weird quirks, like a game designed around weak and barely usable AI).

hushed fern
#

games would mostly become Ai generated fetch quests is my worry

Whenever you search for something popular, like the launch date for a new game, and get an article titled something like "[game] launch date, system requirements" and the actual article says "no launch date has been announced" you can be sure that was written by a bot.

#

Even when it does have info often it's still written by a bot that scrubbed the data from somewhere else

hushed fern

it also happens with cpu and gpu comparisons

like comparing a 10600k and 5800x3d and just mentioning their specs and nothing else

Hardware never guaranteed you will do x frame rate at x resolution

hushed fern
#

Almost like it's a cpu thing dropping to even 360p wouldn't help kekw

autumn vessel
#

well, they wanted to have the most detail while maintaining a good framerate

#

if they made it 4K with a 60FPS cap the framerate would be inconsistent, so that's why there's a 30FPS cap

#

games can also feel smooth at 30FPS too; it's not the same as PC 30FPS where it's really damn slow

rugged pumice
#

CPU Bottleneck. Gotta rememember the game is building portions of the world as you explore with procgen.

My guess is that during testing with a 60FPS cap there were points it dropped to like 30-40FPS and they didn't want a repeat of Downtown Boston in Fallout 4 so they wanted it as stable as possible.

#

I play games at 30-45 FPS on my steam deck. never aim for 60fps. I'm fine with it that way. Helps battery life. So I'm more used to lower FPS I guess.

#

Also testing minspec PC at work ;-;

cyan hamlet
#

tbf you expect that on a steam deck, not so much on a console that weighs 6 times more

shut osprey
#

When it's a next gen gaming console

#

You kinda expect more of it

hushed fern
#

gaming is also doing way more

shut osprey
#

That's fair

sharp wing
#

45ish frames is kind of acceptable on console platforms since controller inputs are limited in motion which make it much less jarring than a mouse input. But I would say 45 should be the minimum for most types of games

rugged pumice
#

CPU bottlenecks are still a thing.

narrow ocean
cyan hamlet
#

That's because a lot of Xbox gamers do PC. Most Xbox exclusives are also on PC, but to play PS4/5/Switch exclusives you need the console.

sharp wing

Now that I think about it, I think it could also be that xbox is mostly just popular in the us. I don't know many people in europe and asia that own a xbox

I got some clarifications from Unity regarding their plan to charge developers per game install (after clearing thresholds)

  • If a player deletes a game and re-installs it, that's 2 installs, 2 charges
  • Same if they install on 2 devices
  • Charity games/bundles exempted from fees

cyan hamlet
#

Well at least they're not targeting lower profit indie studios with their fees. You need to make at least $200,000 in a year AND have at least 200,000 installs.
The installs structure is stupid though, anyone will hit it with that guideline. If you only have an average of 50k users but you update the game 4 times, requiring full downloads (because indie game), is that 200k installs?

#

How are they planning on tracking your revenue? There's lots of questions I and others have that need to be answered still.

tawny aspen
#

they should count a user having a copy of the game as one install smh

cyan hamlet
#

I can understand having a game on multiple devices counting as multiple installations, but really? If I uninstall a game, and reinstall it later because it got an update or a friend wanted to play with me, that counts?

tawny aspen
#

one person could knock out those 200k installs by just cranking a reinstall ad infinitum

cyan hamlet
#

If someone was vindictive enough yeah they could easily abuse that system.

#

And how are they even tracking installs? Do you have to have DRM that connects to the Unity servers or something? So many questions.

#

I'm feeling like this will lead to the slow death of unity as the go to engine and dev kit if it's as bad as I'm thinking. The age of UE5 is upon us.

tawny aspen
#

run them dry so they have to make huge concessions to offer the bare minimum again

cyan hamlet
#

wtf even is this fee structure (emerging markets are places like India)

#

So if you get lucky as an indie studio using the free unity personal plan, and you have a breakout hit like among us that makes a ton of money, you have to pay 20 cents per INSTALL. Never mind if you're only charging $5 for the game. Someone could just reinstall the game 20 times and Unity gets to steal all your money.

vivid kelp
cyan hamlet
#

Great so it basically is online DRM. Lovely. This is totally the route to go.

vivid kelp
#

Also even if you have a proper updater that only reinstalls part of game, I get the feeling it'll still count as complete reinstall. So will moving a game prolly. Mostly basing this off of their reinstall policy and how they'll likely be tracking installs (above point is likely).

sharp wing
#

The days of torrenting shall rise again

Dashflow 360 XT from id-Cooling

#

tis a square pump block

sleek phoenix
manic horizon
#

with a fan on top

sleek phoenix
#

I got no idea about dashflow

manic horizon
sleek phoenix
#

Never seen it before

#

Maybe reviews will turn up

manic horizon
#

for reference

sleek phoenix
#

Got no idea

#

Have to find reviews

manic horizon
#

they do claim "three-phase motor"

sleek phoenix
#

That sounds familiar to me

#

Forget where

#

Anyway

manic horizon
#

comes with a 4th fan AND an 8-port PWM+ARGB hub

sleek phoenix
#

Meh

#

Love the idea of an included controller

#

But the price immediately ruins that

#

150+30 for controller basically

#

Seems ok performing otherwise

manic horizon
#

Do note that this is with 27% VAT and currency conversion crap

sleek phoenix
#

Meh

#

Need more favourable reviews

manic horizon
#

Yeah it's not exactly amazing, but it's not awful

sleek phoenix
#

Ehhh for the price it kinda is

#

Like ok, definitely a $150 class worthy aio

manic horizon
#

Ryujin II is worse for all that matters

sleek phoenix
#

But I can think of plenty of alternatives

#

And the controller isn't worth $30 extra

#

The fans are also just gonna be noisy cos ID cooling, like deepcool, have a great design with maximum noise

manic horizon
#

Honestly I can buy the controller for like 20 bucks and use anything I want

sleek phoenix
#

Mhm

manic horizon
#

the thought is nice, just costs too much

sleek phoenix
#

And don't get me wrong, I like id cooling and deepcool

#

Just that

#

8/10 times now there's a quieter equivalent for less/similar

manic horizon
#

competing with an LT720 on merit is nice tho

#

and it is cheaper than one

#

I might be grasping at straws since I want to like it

sleek phoenix
#

Yeah I don't really recc the LS/LT much anymore

manic horizon
#

fair

sleek phoenix
#

Good aio, but the FC fans are loud af

manic horizon
#

just saying that it does have at least some merits

sleek phoenix
#

Yes it does indeed

manic horizon
#

It's objectively speaking

Not garbage

#

more than Corsair manages lmao

sleek phoenix
#

No that's technically true

#

Lol

#

Here's something ironic

#

If you don't care for the corsair aesthetic but you want the icue ecosystem

#

Corsair rgb adapters are 30 cents each

manic horizon
#

Oh yeah PirateDogTech makes those

sleek phoenix
#

And it turns any 5v argb into corsair

#

So like

manic horizon
#

tbf I don't really care for iCUE

sleek phoenix
#

I don't either

manic horizon
#

it's neat but

Software is a resource hog

sleek phoenix
#

Mmm

manic horizon
#

that being said

#

the id-Cooling is one of those things that you have in the back of your mind like "But if it goes on sale..."

#

for 100 instead of 150?

#

I'd unironically buy it

#

and id-Cooling stuff goes on sale here with some regularity

Enormous news

#

Remember how we say never futureproof? Watch this rapidly become mainstream in the next 10 years

#

Absolutely incredible breakthrough, next to or bigger than the AI boom happening right now

#

Imagine all the games you're playing rn, streamable on Geforce now. No PC required, latency free

#

Mobile phones playing AAA using stream servers

#

16K, 32K, 64K TV

#

Maybe even see mainboards and chip technology adopt fiber over copper. The abilities are enormous if they can commercialise it

#

I might, skip tech for a few gens

#

It's difficult to describe something that which already exists, but to a point where the performance probably won't ever matter anymore

#

That's what this could entail

#

Side note, yes, capitalism will make this a slow change.

Amazing either way

cyan hamlet
#

Gigabit internet? Nah terabit is the new norm

manic horizon
#

TFW your fiber transceiver now needs to be the size of a current PC to be able to translate from literal light to binary

cyan hamlet
manic horizon
cyan hamlet
#

Imagine the equivalent amount of copper cables required for that speed. That's a whole server room right there, in one router.

sleek phoenix
#

Now imagine the same amount of copper used in your motherboard, replaced by one fiber trace

#

A huge number of data bottlenecks could disappear with this

cyan hamlet
#

They could adapt this tech for the next gen thunderbolt or USB and suddenly your type C devices push more bits than the CPU can handle

sleek phoenix
#

REAL

#

eGPU ANYTHING

tawny aspen
#

I just don't want to offload game stuff to the servers completely peepoSadSip

#

Games like war thunder are pretty much 98% of the way there but anything like minecraft and cities skylines with mods and creative property, would be nice to keep that local primarily

cyan hamlet
#

True, there's a lot of risk involved with moving to games-as-a-service models. Not for the big companies but for us and the little guys.

#

But what you can do is have your baller PC set up

#

And play it on your tablet on the go

#

Near zero latency

tawny aspen
#

Vroom

#

That would be uncomfortable though

#

There's a reason phones and tablets suck for playing games on

sleek phoenix
#

Counterpoint

cyan hamlet
#

The screens are nice at least on higher end stuff

sleek phoenix
#

Much less heat given off cos data is swapped by fiber not copper and silicon finfets/gafets

#

faster mobile devices as well as cold

manic horizon
#

Imagine you can plug a controller into the phone and play AAA at max graphics on the go

tawny aspen
#

If it's set up in like a hotel room or whatever where you can use kbm and controller that's fine, but it's not a use case I would invest in

cyan hamlet
#

Well yeah I always use a controller when I'm streaming a game on my phone

#

Or playing retro games, it's great for that

sleek phoenix
#

I like parsec for this

#

But

#

I also loathe parsec

tawny aspen
#

I just play mobile games on my phone lol
