I have a Mac Studio M1 Max - What I want to do is make a complete Startup Disk backup of the drive so I can save that to an external drive or straight to my NAS. Im wondering the safe way to do this? I have done some research and found that I can do this in Disk Utility by making a Disk Image and saving this to my External Drive which then I could also save to my NAS and online storage.

Im wondering also about the format of the external? Will this be MacOS Journaled or something else? I have read that it may have to be the above as its a MacOS Monterey Backup.

If possible could I be given step-by-step of how to do all this in the safe way? Also if I can save the Disk Image straight to my NAS that would be great

Many thanks in advance for any help given on this

I have tried to use Drill Disk byte to byte and it says that is may not be recoverable due to encrypted with Apples M1/T2 Security Chip

CCC can do this, kind of. Cloned drives have broken SSV unless you manually reinstall macOS

stiff knot
#

But will this make a complete copy of whats on my Mac Studio today

hollow pine
#

Yes

stiff knot
#

I was looking at Disk Utility but wud have to boot into Recovery mode to do it if I want to copy complete Startup Disk

hollow pine
#

Yes, Apple excludes System files from backups due to SSV

stiff knot
#

OK so CCC is the way forward - Also the External drive wat format do I need? I was going to partition the 1Tb Ex drive as my Mac Studio is only 500Gb.

#

Am I able to save the CCC straight to my NAS?

Backup should be APFS, same as source, in order to be bootable, but there are caveats

stiff knot
#

Sud I use APFS or do Mac Extended Journaled just incasae

hollow pine
#

If you use HFS+ journaled the backup won't be bootable

stiff knot
#

So I will have to use APFS is that correct

#

I’m not using Ventura at the moment I’m still happy with Monterey so I sud b ok as it’s saying it wud effect MacOS Ventura

#

So wud it not b safe to make a byte by byte disk image using Disk Utility instead?

hollow pine
#

If you don't need it to be bootable, Disk Utility is fine

stiff knot
#

Wudnt the Disk Utility copy be a complete copy so sud be bootable from the videos and stuff Ive read - wat Ive gathered is that u have to make sure the same format has to b used as the Startup disk is

hollow pine
#

Due to Signed System Volume, it won't be bootable until you manually install macOS to that drive

stiff knot
#

So I can make the copy and then back that up elsewhere as it’s just an image. Then it will only be bootable wen I have installed it on a system that has the same MacOS on? Is that correct? Sry to sound stupid but trying to understand this before I perform it. Don’t want to lose anything

hollow pine
#

You won't loose anything if you backup the whole disk, but you don't need to backup the macOS system files, since they will need to be reinstalled anyways to make it bootable

#

Also a caveat with the Mac Studio, if the internal SSD dies, it won't boot off an external disk

stiff knot
#

So best way use CCC to make a clone of my Startup. This can be also copied to my NAS & cloud if I wish and deleted and updated periodically.

#

I’m reading byte to byte is best that’s why I was going to do it using Disk Utility

hollow pine
#

Yes, CCC or TM is better for incremental, Disk Utility is better for a one-time disk image

stiff knot
#

CCC will then if there is a failure b able to then be installed on a new device/Max Studio if SSD fails

hollow pine
#

Yes, but. It won't be able to overwrite the system files on a new device

#

So you'll be doing a selective restore from backup

stiff knot
#

But all my apps and data will b the same?

hollow pine
#

They should be, yes

#

Best practice is to use multiple backup methods

stiff knot
#

Just settings for my Mac Studio won’t is that correct

hollow pine
#

Yes

stiff knot
#

So fresh install with my stuff added from the backup - I’m getting it now 😂

hollow pine
#

If you buy enough iCloud storage you can keep all your local files in that, including the applications you use

stiff knot
#

See I have unlimited Gdrive can I use that?

#

I have my NAS backed up to it

hollow pine
#

In theory sure. I have an /Applications folder in my cloud drive where all the third-party apps go

#

So they sync between my macs

#

And I symlink most application data into a /Library cloud folder as well

stiff knot
#

Am I making more work for myself? As I’m not to gd with these things. Wud the best method for me be to CCC and have that on an external and in the Gdrive

hollow pine
#

It depends on your workflow

stiff knot
#

Or do u have a link to how I wud set something link u said up

#

I just want a copy of my Mac elsewhere so I don’t lose what I have

hollow pine
#

That's ideal yes

stiff knot
#

I’m also now thinking to make a backup of my OMV OS on my NAS so if that goes I’m ok 😂

hollow pine
#

Most cloud providers like Google and Dropbox can't backup your entire drive tho, so local backup is going to be more robust

stiff knot
#

Once a month make a new copy. With the copies being added to the Gdrive

hollow pine
#

If you have the space, back up in Time Machine daily as well

stiff knot
#

My Mac Studio is 500gb. I have a couple of external drives, the NAS and Gdrive

hollow pine
#

They can get saved to NAS gracefully

stiff knot
#

Again how wud I set this up and do it correctly

hollow pine
#

Time Machine, direct to NAS

stiff knot
#

Oh I can do TM to NAS daily then a CCC monthly

hollow pine
#

Yep

stiff knot
#

Now that will work

hollow pine
#

A last generation AirPort Extreme is perfect for that, and cheap

stiff knot
#

So they are the ones which have storage inside as well as a router right

hollow pine
#

The one I have doesn't have internal storage, just a drive plugged into it

stiff knot
#

So why is AirPort Extreme needed

#

If I TM and CCC and copy those files to NAS and Gdrive do I need anything else?

hollow pine
#

It's just an easy to setup NAS device, others will work

#

Double redundancy ought to be enough, no?

stiff knot
#

If I have a NAS already I’m just trying to workout y I need an AirPort Extreme

hollow pine
#

Oh you don't, I was just giving it as an example

stiff knot
#

Ok thought I needed one

#

I will check the links and look to run TM daily to folder on my NAS and also do a CCC to external drive and also copy that to the NAS and Gdrive

#

Once that’s done onto OMV forum to find out how to bkup the OS disk for the NAS 😂
