Updating between major OS versions needs to be done through OCLP, instead of the system Software Update

Are you installing OCLP to your local drive, or a USB drive

I am using my solid-state drive on USB

Whatever drive you use to make the OCLP installer will be completely erased

#

Recommended to use a USB drive greater than 16 GB

Use OCLP to download the installer to your /Applications folder

Then you can use it to build and copy the installer to your blank USB drive

Selecting the third button will give you the option to "Download macOS Installer"
