So, I am making this narrative-driven game that is meant to be a sort of stream of consciousness while the player crosses and explores different environments. Each level is self-contained, and regularly displays texts and prompts the player to do a few things.
The closest genre I can find to describe it would be psychological horror with visual novel elements.
For this particular level, the player is locked in an apartment while being harassed by their phone, the fridge, and intrusive thoughts. You start in a room with a portrait of Napoleon, and the door is blocked by a chair.
Level design wise, I’d like to suggest something really ain’t right but also not to shove it right in the player’s face with blood or dirt. The horror aspect of what has happened in this otherwise quiet room and apartment is only sometimes perceptible, and supposed to be reinforced through gameplay events.
Oh and yes, it is in black and white. Kind of a neo-noir, expressionist mood.
For now I am working on the level blockout, layout and filling the first room with its elements. I did start the project in Unity at first, but am seriously considering switching to Unreal because lightmapping in Unity is a pain. The previews here are from Blender.
I’ll post advancements here until it’s finished 🙂
Lemme know what you think!
