The best way to make a ton of bells in this game is to get involved with the turnip market. Daisy Mae sells them Sunday mornings and then you can resell them any other day of the week. Nook's will buy them for one price before noon and another price after noon. Pay attention to the trend and sell them for a higher price than you purchased them for. But you must sell them before the next Sunday comes or they will spoil and be worthless!
