1. use items that you can put items on, using both "household" and "miscellaneous" items to really fill the space and not leave things feeling empty.
2. use detailed items, many of the bigger expensive "end game" items are already very detailed and look impressive just on their own.

Because in Japan, when you go into a Shinto shrine or a Buddhist temple for that matter, they have a little water feature for you to perform a hand washing ritual before you go up to the alter to do your prayers.
