Once I get them I want to put my house and their houses near each other, but I'm not good at designing stuff. Anyone have inspiration for a Chinese themed area around a player and two villager homes?

my suggestion is to use in game pathing to plot out the spaces to decide where you want them to go. I do that and then decorate around that square to make sure the house will be placed right so I'm not spending too many bells

Personally I find that having them spaced out is nicer since you have more options but it depends on your island vibe/theme/preference

the way i look at the buildings like houses and shops in the game, they help fill up space. my advice would be to decorate the island as you wish, and when you don't have an idea or something to fill up some space, the buildings are perfect to throw down and decorate around. if you want to make a neighborhood or shopping district then that's a good way to use up a big area on the island, otherwise use the buildings wherever you need space filled up ^^

Im not sure about hiding it, however an idea could be manipulating it so that it looks more or less normal. Both of these are my entries with left being my current and the right being my older one. My airport is a few spaces away from my RS, but if you manipulate to where it's like this I think it could work out for you! By manipulate I mean make a path that distracts from the fact that it isnt perfect.

Does anyone have any tips for making rivers look natural?

General advice would be to give them bends, avoie symmetrical terraforming on each side, do a decent amount if rounded edges to avoid straight lines (but some 90 angles are fine, esp with a flower or bush on them), smaller rivers lead to larger ones lead to lakes or the ocean, etc.

Its less about having the water be 'realistic' per se (like maybe your layout demands that it gets smaller instead of larger in one part, or maybe you have some crazy waterfalls) as that it looks like it's not created with the rigid grid that it actually is. So do what you can to mix it up and avoid patterns
