So what these photos all have are built up cliffs to look like buildings
Using tall items to look like walls and putting them next to each other on different levels
Usually with a vertical path so you can see all of it well
Items that work well are stalls, simple panels, servers, neon diner signs, and utility poles
but its best to get creative and find whatever items fit your theme and style

Well @thick goblet I usually go for terraforming first before I move homes that way I'm not moving homes just to have to move them again. I like lumpier shapes for a more natural feel

I like to keep i mind that villagers will be walking in certain parts more than others so you can do both. Just keep in mind the main areas you go to like the stores and stuff will need to be more roomy

Hello! I'm just starting out. This is how my island looks right now. I feel pretty lost in figuring out how to get started. My RS is kinda close to the entrance and I don't plan to start over. I have a vague idea of what kind of areas I want to create, but feel overwhelmed in terms of how to teraform and create a nice flow.

My advice to you is to take it one area at a time
if you're just decorating the area around your plaza, focus on that
You should still try to plan ahead about where you want it to connect to everything else, but don't worry about it too much or you could overwhelm yourself
I can't really say much for terraforming, as that kinda depends on what you want to do, but for some general advice, try to have some cliffs/elevation difference in most of your areas

With that much space, I made a list of ideas/area I wanted like dog park, orchard, farm, etc. Then decided the general area I wanted them in like orchard top left, museum behind RS, etc. Then I made a draft of the elevation shape I wanted for my island once I have an idea of where I wanted things. You don't need to know where everything will go just the big stuff. I ended up drawing out some shapes and labeling it in a square to get the gist.
I ended up not terraforming for a while until I have a badly sketched out draft of the elevation shape I wanted then I worked a little at a time

And again, when you're planning you want to look at your entire island, but when you're building you should try to take it 1 area at a time. I tried to terraform my entire island and focused on several different parts of my island at once. The result was me getting burned out and not playing the game for 1 month.

They usually put them against a cliff side to get that multilevel look.

well it depends on the look you are going for. Some people will use furniture and turn it around like the wedding organ. Elevation is involved which will also let them give the illusion of a roof such as a barn having a roof (the roof would be solar panels) Do you have a inspo picture you had in mind. Might be more helpful if we point out what the inspo picture did

Looks like the closest building is using 1 level of elevation with simple panels in front. Then at the edge of the cliff they are using stalls then simple panels behind those stalls.
The further building is still simple panels then look like more elevation in the distance with solar panels on top

thank you for the advice! Having so much space to work with makes it kind of overwhelming. Mostly what I've done is just removing trees/plants to make a clean slate. I'm still not sure if I'm in love with my layout but I'll try to tackle one area at a time

I don't think it's clutters. You could try making the path a little more windy. For instance show more green near the well so the washtub isn't getting played down by the path. I like the placement of everything though

You could create a large plaza. There are multiple ways you can go with this, though. It could be just a large central area with a fountain, some clocks, and other decorations whose main feature is being a point of your city from which all paths lead. You could also create a shopping area there. Another idea is to create a sort of buffer area between your airport and your town hall. Maybe like an area for tourists or smthn like that. These are just my ideas.

First ideas that came to mind was either the silo or maybe trying to mimic a pole with the panels. But panels arent super high and are rather wide. Silos are taller, but wider...
Palm trees are quite tall, sadly you can't just cut the top half off. But maybe it or something similar could still work with a pirate theme

I haven't moved anything yet... It's embarrassing how bad my island looks. I watch such awesome inspirational videos, but I'm scared to commit to moving stuff... spending time and bells on something I'd hate. I'm looking to build a hiking trail/ camping area that is toward the back of the island and I'd like to move all my villagers to one area. I'm thinking I want a multi-level residential area. Any tips on planning yard size? Do you use a certain piece of furniture or how do you account for the spacing?

@earnest bronze Personally, my villagers yards are all relatively the same size without me having purposely gone to the effort of making sure that they 100% are, if that makes sense. Also, in regards to furniture for their yards, I've placed items that match their personality/favourite colour/favourite style/hobby. Villagers also sometimes mention random things that they like. Merry, for example, sometimes talks about how much she loves space...so I've placed a telescope in her yard so that she can look at the stars 🙂

If you have a very specific design in mind that involves the placement of the RS, then I say its worthwhile to reset. If not, there are plenty of ways to get creative and make a close RS work

and spread them out. Lumberyard, Farm, City, Zen Garden, Castle, Beach House, etc.
