Hmm, i would suggest making really small cliffs with some medium sized items on top or using some tall items, like simple panels, pagodas, wedding pipe organs, etc, to break the areas up by dividing the zonese

Free furniture, flowers, trees bushes. Thats what I did day 1, it helped develope my island fast

@woven drift ^ yes, try and make height scaling not akward, like have a bunch of short items next to eachother, and also dont put alot of the same colors mear eachother, and even if u do use flowers to spread the colors, if u have abunch of brown stuff next to eachother, just put some white flowers in the background

@visual totem If it helps, I have my nooks and ables with a natural theme. Nooks is more eastern with Bamboo trees and a zen bridge, while Ables is just mountain themed with pine trees, bushes, and rope fencing

@storm tartan I visited your island with the dream address and it looks so good! The only advice I have would be to try and fill the empty spaces around the map (I filled all mine up by placing down custom designs like petals and paths, and furniture like butterfly models from Flick)
